Biodegradable composite films based on pullulan/carboxymethyl cellulose/nano-TiO 2 were prepared using a solution casting method. In this study, the composite films were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and their physical, mechanical and antimicrobial properties were investigated. FTIR and XRD results confirmed that the presence of nano-TiO 2 could enhance the interaction between the film matrix. SEM analysis revealed that the composite films had a homogeneous network structure, and good particle dispersion could be obtained when the nano-TiO 2 particle content was low. DSC results indicated that the composite films possessed good thermal stability. The incorporation of nano-TiO 2 increased the thickness and contact angle while significantly decreasing the water solubility ( p < 0.05). As the content of nano-TiO 2 increased, the water vapor and ultraviolet visible (UV–Vis) light barrier properties of composite films were significantly improved ( p < 0.05). Mechanical analysis demonstrated that the tensile strength of the composite films first increased and then decreased, whereas the elongation at break decreased significantly ( p < 0.05). In addition, the composite films exhibited excellent activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus mainly due to the inactivation of bacteria by nano-TiO 2 photocatalysis. Preservation experiments showed that the composite films could decrease the weight loss significantly and maintain the firmness, titratable acidity, vitamin c and skin color of strawberries, thereby improving the overall quality of strawberries and extending their shelf life. This finding suggested that pullulan/carboxymethyl cellulose/nano-TiO 2 composite films possessed excellent potential for application in food packaging.

To eliminate the negative impacts of waste stone powder that arises from stone processing, the waste was recycled into aerated bricks with a porous structure that exhibited exceptional properties when applied in buildings. However, the pores easily absorb rainwater and dust, causing performance degradation and mold growth inside. In this paper, we have developed through hydrothermal reactions an environmentally friendly aqueous suspension, containing homemade highly dispersive TiO2nanoparticles modified with super-hydrophobic groups on the surface. The suspension was coated onto the aerated bricks, creating a super-hydrophobic surface with a highly textured hierarchical structure. A large contact angle of 146° tested on the surface and negligible water absorption for 24 h immersion demonstrate the excellent water proofing performance, holding a great promise for large scale applications in construction and buildings. Keywords:aerated brick;waste recycling;hydrophobic;surface modification;TiO2nanoparticle;highly dispersive

Nanoscale titanium dioxide (nTiO2) is one of the most widely used metal oxide nanomaterials. Once released into the environment, nTiO2 may catalyze abiotic transformation of contaminants and consequently affect their fate and effects. Here, we show that the overall catalytic efficiency of nTiO2 for the dehydrochlorination reaction of 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane, a commonly used solvent, depends on the crystalline phase and exposed facets of nTiO2, which significantly affect the adsorption capacity and surface catalytic activity of nTiO2. Specifically, under all three pH conditions tested (7.0, 7.5 and 8.0), the overall catalytic efficiency of eight nTiO2 materials (as indicated by the surface-area-normalized reaction kinetic constants) followed the order of rutile > anatase > TiO2(B). For anatase and TiO2(B) materials, the overall catalytic efficiency increased with the increasing percentage of exposed {001} and {010} facets, respectively. Crystalline phase and exposed facets significantly affected adsorption affinities of nTiO2, likely by modulating surface hydrophobicity of nTiO2. Crystalline phase and exposed facets also determined the activity of surface catalytic sites on nTiO2 by dictating the concentration and strength of surface unsaturated Ti atoms, as the deprotonated hydroxyl groups chemisorbed to these reactive Ti atoms served as bases to catalyze the base-promoted reaction.

The purpose of this article is to investigate the effects of nano-tianium dioxide (nano-TiO 2 ) on the high-amylose starch/polyvingl alcohol (PVA) blend films prepared by a solution casting method. The results show that at the concentration of 0.6% of nano-TiO 2 , the film demonstrated the best tensile strength at 9.53 MPa, and the elongation at break was noted as 49.50%. The optical transmittance of the film was decreased and the water resistance was improved with further increase of the concentration of nano-TiO 2 . Using the techniques of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the molecular and the crystal structures of the films were characterized. The results indicate that the miscibility and compatibility between high-amylose starch and PVA were increased with the addition of nano-TiO 2 into the films due to the formation of hydrogen and C O Ti bonds. The antimicrobial activities of the blend films were also explored. The results show that there were inhibitory zones around the circular film disc, which is attributable to the addition of nano-TiO 2 . © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. A series of novel nano-composite polymer electrolytes (NCPEs) are prepared with the ionic liquid of N-methyl-N-methoxyethylpiperidiniumbis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (PP 12O1 TFSI) as plasticizer and nano-sized TiO 2 as additive. The effect of the ratio of TiO 2 to Poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) on the properties of the NCPEs are studied, such as the crystallinity and ionic conductivity . The results indicate that the nano-composite polymer electrolyte NCPE-2, that the ratio of TiO 2 to PVDF-HFP is 10%, exhibits the highest ionic conductivity of 2 × 10 − 3 S·cm − 1 with the lowest crystallinity. The LiFePO 4 /NCPE-2/Li coin-typed cell cycled at 0.5 C shows the 1st discharge capacity of 127.9 mAh g − 1 and remains 97.6% of the initial discharge capacity on the 50th cycle.

Commercial polyolefin separators often cause explosions and thermal runaways in lithium-ion batteries due to their poor thermal stability. Therefore, various polymer separators with high thermal stability have attracted the attention of researchers. In this paper, a kind of special nano-TiO2/Polyimide (TiO2@PI) composite separator was prepared by adding nano-TiO2 particles with certain content to the PAA solution before electrospinning. It is found that the added TiO2 ceramic particles greatly improve the flame retardant performance of the separator, and at the same time, they inhibit lithium dendrites and prevent the internal short circuit of the battery. As a result, the TiO2@PI nanofiber separator (5.0-TiO2@PI) prepared by a spinning solution with a TiO2 concentration of 5.0 wt % is formed by connecting spherical beads with a diameter of about 500 nm, which greatly inhibits lithium dendrites. It has better properties, such as electrolyte uptake (721%) and ionic conductivity (2.52 mS cm–1). The LiCoO2/Li battery based on 5.0-TiO2@PI nanofiber separator has a higher discharge capacity even at a current density of 4 C, which is better than that of PE separator. The use of this 5.0-TiO2@PI nanofiber separator has enlightening significance for the safety of high energy density batteries.

The bioinspired design and construction of enzyme@capsule microreactors with specific cell-like functionality has generated tremendous interest in recent years. Inspired by their fascinating complexity, scientists have endeavored to understand the essential aspects of a natural cell and create biomimicking microreactors so as to immobilize enzymes within the hierarchical structure of a microcapsule. In this study, simultaneous encapsulation of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) was achieved during the preparation of microcapsules by the Pickering emulsion method using amphiphilic modified TiO2nanoparticles (NPs) as building blocks for assembling the photocatalytic microcapsule membrane. The ADH@TiO2NP microreactors exhibited dual catalytic functions, i.e., spatially confined enzymatic catalysis and the membrane-associated photocatalytic oxidation under visible light. The sustainable cycling of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) coenzyme between NADH and NAD+was realized by enzymatic regeneration of NADH from NAD+reduction, and was provided in a form that enabled further photocatalytic oxidation to NAD+under visible light. This bioinspired ADH@TiO2NP microreactor allowed the linking of a semiconductor mineral-based inorganic photosystem to enzymatic reactions. This is a first step toward the realization of sustainable biological cycling of NAD+/NADH coenzyme in synthetic functional microsystems operating under visible light irradiation. Keywords:enzyme encapsulation;bioinspired microreactors;nicotinamide coenzymes cycling;alcohol dehydrogenase;TiO2nanoparticles

In recent years, ceramic fiber aerogel have been one of the most attractive insulating materials due to its low thermal conductivity, excellent mechanical properties and heat resistance. However, the high radiation heat transfer limits its practical application at high temperatures. In this study, a novel SiO 2 -ZrO 2 fiber aerogel/TiO 2 composite (SZTFAs) was successfully designed and prepared through an air-assisted electrospinning technique in conjunction with the hydrolysis of TiCl 4 . The SZTFAs exhibits anatase TiO 2 nanocoating on the fiber surface. The SZTFAs have low density (14 mg/cm 3 ), good mechanical properties (up to 80% compressive strain, 105.6 KPa), excellent high temperature stability (1200 °C) and fatigue resistance (after 1000 cycles, the maximum stress and Young’s modulus of the SZTFAs remain above 60%) and low thermal conductivity (0.0292 W/(m·K)). After 10 min of exposure to a butane flame, the backside temperature of the SZTFAs was 165 °C, which was approximately 40 °C lower than that of the samples without added TiO 2 . Due to the porous layered three-dimensional structure of SiO 2 -ZrO 2 fibers aerogel and TiO 2 nanolayer with shielding infrared radiation, the SZTFAs exhibit excellent heat resistance and thermal insulation properties. This study provides a method for developing ceramic fiber aerogels with excellent thermal insulation and mechanical properties at high temperatures.

Previous studies primarily considered TiO 2 as a nano-filler to accelerate cement hydration due to the nucleation site effect. However, hydroxyl free radicals (•OH), released from TiO 2 under UV irradiation, also exhibit great potential to accelerate cement hydration owing to their high nucleophilicity arising from unpaired electrons. This study is the first to reveal the accelerating mechanism of •OH generated by photoexcited nano-TiO 2 on cement hydration. Current experimental results indicated that 5.0 wt% addition of photoexcited nano-TiO 2 (under 6 h of UV irradiation during the early curing stage) improved the dissolution rate of tricalcium silicate (C 3 S) by 30 %, followed by a 35 % increase in the hydration degree of cement paste. More importantly, the polymerization degree and high-density content of C–S–H gels were also improved by 26 % and 13 %, accompanied by a 46 % reduction in porosity of the composites. All the aforementioned improvements were attributed to the presence of •OH generated by photoexcited nano-TiO 2 , which significantly accelerated cement hydration by accelerating C 3 S dissolution, facilitating faster nucleation and growth of C–S–H gels. In addition, the Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the accelerating effect of •OH on cement hydration may stem from the stronger interaction between •OH and the Ca ion on the C 3 S surface compared to the water molecule, and the increased surface nucleophilicity due to the dispersion of unpaired elections from •OH to all the O ions in the surface layer. These findings provide a high-efficiency approach to accelerate cement hydration by photoexcited nano-TiO 2 , thereby paving the way for the development of advanced and sustainable cement-based materials.

Fly ash, a by-product of coal combustion, is a pozzolanic solid waste with annual production of 1.63 billion tonnes, which has been widely used to replace cement clinker to develop sustainable concrete. However, the incorporation of high volumes of inert fly ash significantly reduces the early mechanical strength of concrete due to its low pozzolanic activity. This study presents an innovative strategy to effectively enhance the reactivity of fly ash by utilizing hydroxyl free radicals (•OH), highly reactive oxidative species generated by nano-TiO 2 under UV light excitation. Experimental results demonstrated that photoexcited nano-TiO 2 significantly promoted the depolymerization of inert glassy phases in fly ash, resulting in a 28 % increase in Ca(OH) 2 consumption within 72 h. Consequently, the compressive and flexural strengths of mortar at 28 days increased by 37 % and 16 %, respectively, with a strength activity index reaching 95.4 %. In addition, the water absorption and chloride ion diffusion coefficient were reduced by 15 % and 18 %, respectively, due to a more refined pore structure driven by enhanced pozzolanic reactivity. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations further revealed that •OH substantially lowered the energy barrier for Si-O-Al bonds cleavage (from 22.93 kcal/mol for OH − to 8.54 kcal/mol for •OH), confirming its superior catalytic efficiency and thermodynamic advantage. In conclusion, the findings confirm that photoexcited nano-TiO 2 can serve as an effective activator for enhancing the utilization efficiency of fly ash in sustainable concrete.

This study investigated the impact of natural sand supported nano-TiO 2 hydrosol (TiO 2 @Sand) on the mechanical and photocatalytic performance of cement mortar and the underlying mechanisms. The incorporation of TiO 2 @Sand in cement mortar (TiO 2 was 0.6 wt% of cement) improved 28-day compressive strength by 67% compared with the one without nano-TiO 2 . Various beneficial changes towards improved mechanical strength were also observed in TiO 2 @Sand cement mortar: reduced total porosity by 35%, densified interfacial transition zone (ITZ) microstructure, enhanced modulus of ITZ by 54%, reduced ITZ thickness by 40% and improved dispersion of TiO 2 . The degradation efficiency of Rhodamine B and NO by TiO 2 @Sand reinforced mortar was 40% and 25% higher than cement matrix with conventionally dispersed nano-TiO 2 powder, respectively. The significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity of the TiO 2 @Sand mortar was attributed to the expanded light absorption range, the reduced recombination of electron-hole pairs of TiO 2 @Sand, and the better dispersion of nano-TiO 2 in cement matrix. These results demonstrated the promising potential of using TiO 2 @Sand in cement mortar to deliver significant enhancement of both mechanical strength and photocatalytic activity.

A three-dimensional (3D) anode is essential for high-performance microbial fuel cells (MFCs). In this study, 3D porous carbon monoliths from a wax gourd (WGCM) were obtained by freeze-drying and carbonization. Nano-TiO2was further coated onto the surface of WGCM to obtain a nano-TiO2/WGCM anode. The WGCM anode enhanced the maximum power density of MFCs by 167.9% compared with the carbon felt anode, while nano-TiO2/WGCM anode additionally increased the value by 45.8% to achieve 1396.2 mW/m2. WGCM enhancement was due to the 3D porous structure, the good conductivity and the surface hydrophilicity, which enhanced electroactive biofilm formation and anodic electron transfer. In addition, nano-TiO2modification enhanced the enrichment ofAcinetobacter, an electricigen, by 31.0% on the anode to further improve the power production. The results demonstrated that the nano-TiO2/WGCM was an effective anode for power enhancement in MFCs.Keywords:microbial fuel cells;anode;carbon monolith;nano-TiO2;Acinetobacter
