Common hydrogels containing abundant water are insulating materials and lose stretchability easily below the freezing point of water, holding limited potential in emerging applications such as wearable soft devices. The introduction of compatible biomass-derived materials into hydrogel systems could be a potential solution that simultaneously enables anti-freezing ability, mechanical enhancement, and antibacterial properties . Based on such a hypothesis, here we report the facile development of biocompatible hydrogels that are capable of maintaining satisfying mechanical properties and electrical conductivity well below zero degrees centigrade. The strategy is to reinforce neat polyacrylamide (PAAm) hydrogels with biomass-derived cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) and phytic acid (PA), transforming the originally weak, insulating hydrogels into tough, highly conductive ones. Anti-freezing and antibacterial properties also emerge in the reinforced hydrogels, enabling them to work as efficient wearable sensors below zero degrees centigrade. Considering that numerous polymer hydrogel systems are compatible with CNC and PA, we believe that this simple biomass-based strategy can work universally to enhance and functionalize various weak and insulating hydrogels that are traditionally susceptible to frost and bacteria.

White pollution substantially impairs people's quality of life nowadays. Bio-based polymers that are environmentally friendly and biodegradable have garnered interest. Among them, polylactic acid (PLA) has attracted wide attention due to its excellent biodegradability, high transparency, and easy processing. However, its inherent flammability, low toughness, and poor compatibility with flame retardants severely limit its application scope. In this paper, a phytic acid-based flame retardant glycidyl methacrylate phytate (GPA) was prepared by epoxy ring-opening and phosphate transesterification. GPA was grafted onto PLA through free radical polymerization, and the introduction of GPA improved both the mechanical properties and flame retardancy of PLA. The LOI of PLA composite rose to 28% after adding a 6 wt% GPA. A reduction of 11.7% in the total heat release of the PLA-GPAX was observed in comparison to neat PLA, demonstrating that the prepared PLA composite exhibits high flame retardancy. Due to the improved dispersion and compatibility of GPA in the matrix after grafting onto PLA, the mechanical strength of PLA increased by 19.9%. This study provides a feasible method for improving the compatibility between flame retardants and bio-based polymers, achieving a mutually beneficial situation in flame retardancy and mechanical strength, and further expanding the application range of bio-based materials.

The efficient extraction of uranium from seawater plays an important role to guarantee a sustainable nuclear energy industry. Zr-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising uranium adsorbents due to their high stability, customizable functionality and adjustable topological structure. In this study, Zr based MOF-808 with tunable phytic acid (PA) functionalization (MOF-808-PA1 and MOF-808-PA2) were prepared. The modulation of PA modification significantly promoted the uranium extraction of MOF-808 with the saturated adsorption capacity reaching 423.89 mg/g and adsorption equilibrium achieved in 15 min in aqueous solution. Impressively, MOF-808-PA2 exhibited superior selectivity towards uranium with the distribution coefficient up to 9.2 × 10 5 mL/g, which overwhelms other competitive ions in simulated seawater. After adsorption in real seawater for 28 days, uranium capture capacity of MOF-808-PA2 reached 7.85 mg/g, 8 times higher than that of vanadium. DFT simulation indicated that the excellent seawater uranium extraction performance originated from the strong affinity between abundant P-O/P=O and uranyl ions. This work highlights the design of high-performance uranium adsorbents based on functional group modification in MOFs system.

Based on the synergistic effects among phosphorus, nitrogen, and boron elements, this study developed a novel and highly efficient flame-retardant system to enhance the fire safety of polypropylene (PP) during its application. An integrated intumescent flame retardant (IFR) was prepared via supramolecular self-assembly by surface-modifying piperazine phosphate (PAPP) with phytic acid (PA) and melamine (MEL), and was named PM@PAPP. Subsequently, it was combined with zinc borate (ZB) to prepare flame-retardant PP composites. The PM@PAPP/ZB/PP composite exhibited excellent flame retardancy and smoke suppression performance. Specifically, the limiting oxygen index (LOI) of PP5 reached 35.3%, and its vertical burning test (UL-94) rating was V-0 level. The peak heat release rate (pHRR) was 91% lower than that of pure PP. The peak smoke production rate (pSPR) of PP5 decreased from 0.097 m 2 /s for pure PP to 0.007 m 2 /s, representing a reduction of 93%. Furthermore, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Raman spectroscopy results confirmed that the synergistic effect of ZB and PM@PAPP promoted the formation of continuous and dense carbon layers. This study provides a new strategy for improving the flame-retardant properties of PP and expanding its application in fields with strict fire safety requirements.

ADP-P@Mn and ADP-P@Ni composites were prepared by the interfacial assembly of ammonium dihydrogen phosphate (ADP) with transition metal–phytic acid (PA) complexes. These composites were then mixed with cellulose fibers in an aqueous solution to produce flame-retardant paper. Morphological analysis revealed that the original ADP particles exhibited a smooth, cubic morphology; however, after functionalization with phytic acid, the particles became rougher. The presence of P–O–Mn and P–O–Ni bonds confirmed the bridging effect between phytic acid and ADP, which led to reduced crystallinity and promoted synergistic flame-retardant effects during combustion. Within all concentration ranges tested, both ADP-P@Mn and ADP-P@Ni exhibited significantly improved flame retardancy compared with pristine ADP and reduced the flame spread rate by up to 50%, showing remarkably enhanced flame-retardant efficiency. Notably, even at low concentrations, these two novel flame retardants endowed cellulose paper with self-extinguishing properties. Additionally, increased carbon and oxygen contents in residual char, along with cross-linking via P–C, P–O, and P═O bonds, indicated the formation of a dense carbonaceous layer. Consequently, ADP-P@Mn and ADP-P@Ni significantly enhanced the flame resistance of cellulose paper while maintaining its excellent writing performance, moisture resistance, and mechanical properties.

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), a class of renewable and biodegradable polymers, show significant potential for fire-sensitive applications but face limitations due to conventional flame-retardant approaches that depend on non-renewable additives and energy-intensive processes. Here, we present a sustainable flame-retardant system engineered via a one-pot synthesis of phytate derivatives (PA 1 PEA 6 and PA 1 PEA 12 ) from plant-derived phytic acid and phenethylamine. Incorporating 10 wt% PA 1 PEA 12 into PHA achieved exceptional fire safety performance while preserving material integrity, evidenced by a 51 % enhancement in limiting oxygen index (29.7 %), UL-94 V-0 certification, and 91.9 % retention of original impact strength. Advanced multiscale analyses (SEM-EDS, FTIR, TG-IR) revealed a condensed-phase dominant mechanism: polyphosphate derivatives catalyzed the formation of a coherent char barrier during combustion, effectively blocking oxygen permeation and heat propagation (18.6 % reduction in peak heat release rate). Concurrently, this system suppressed volatile organic emissions, reducing total smoke production by 22 %. The bio-based additive design not only aligns with circular economy principles but also establishes a scalable paradigm for balancing flame retardancy with mechanical and environmental performance in biodegradable polymers, significantly expanding PHA's applicability in eco-conscious material engineering.

To address the high flammability of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fabrics and impart multifunctionality, a phosphorus–nitrogen flame retardant was designed through molecular hybridization of phytic acid and cytosine. This biomolecular-derived strategy was employed to enhance both char formation and gas-phase inhibitory activity. A multifunctional coating was constructed on PET fabric using a stepwise droplet coating and solvent evaporation technique, sequentially applying the synthesized flame retardant, graphene oxide, and polydimethylsiloxane. The modified fabric exhibited remarkable flame retardancy improvements, exhibiting 54.1% and 11.3% reductions in peak heat release rate and total heat release, respectively. Moreover, the treated fabric displayed excellent hydrophobicity with water contact angle of 144.5°, as well as fast fire response (8 s alarm trigger) and sustained signal transmission (1328 s) due to rapid electrical resistance changes upon flame exposure. This study provides a feasible strategy for designing and preparing PET fabrics with flame retardancy, hydrophobicity, and fire alarm functionality.

To ensure bamboo-based composites can withstand harsh environments, it is important to develop superhydrophobic and mildew-resistant coatings for the surfaces of the product. Achieving these functions on bamboo surfaces remains a challenging research problem. We applied a phytic acid (PA)-based hybrid coating to bamboo surfaces using a layer-by-layer self-assembly technique, and superhydrophobicity was further enhanced through modification with low surface energy substances. Scanning electron microscopy-Energy disperse spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) mapping results initially confirmed the successful creation of a microscale structure with improved hierarchical roughness on the bamboo surface. Following modification with octadecylamine (OA), the polyethyleneimine (PEI)/PA-Fe 3 + /OA/Bamboo demonstrated outstanding superhydrophobic performance, with a water contact angle reaching 151° and remaining above 150° without significant change over 2 min. Despite undergoing abrasion, scratch and tape peel tests, the PEI/PA-Fe 3+ /OA/Bamboo maintained high hydrophobicity, with a water contact angle remaining above 140°. Finally, phytic acid-based hybrid metal coordination complexes created a dense protective coating on the bamboo surface. This coating both prevented Aspergillus niger from accessing internal nutrients and inhibited its adhesion to the bamboo surface. Thus, the successful application of the superhydrophobic coating enhanced the mildew resistance of bamboo.

The uranium extraction from seawater (UES) by adsorption is considered to be a promising method. However, current adsorbents suffer from insufficient exposure of active sites, limiting their accessibility for uranyl ion (UO₂ 2+ ) binding. In this work, a phytic acid-functionalized covalent organic framework (COF-PA) was successfully synthesized for highly efficient uranium extraction from seawater. COF-PA surfaces exhibited numerous rod-like protrusions, exposing additional active sites. Furthermore, the incorporation of phytic acid endowed the material with abundant phosphate groups, which exhibited strong coordination ability with uranyl ions, leading to a remarkable adsorption capacity (Q m = 645.6 mg g −1 ). The adsorption capacity achieved in natural seawater over a 15-day period was 2 mg g −1 . Additionally, the COF-PA demonstrated exceptional selectivity for UO 2 2+ over competing metal ions and maintained over 70 % of its initial adsorption capacity after four regeneration cycles, highlighting its robust reusability. Furthermore, mechanistic investigations, including X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations, revealed that the adsorption process is driven by chemisorption, where phosphate groups act as bidentate ligands to form stable equatorial coordination bonds with uranium. This work provides a novel strategy for designing functionalized COFs with natural, eco-friendly ligands for UES.

With the rapid development of science and technology, the discharge of industrial wastewater, especially dye wastewater, has caused great harm to the ecological environment. In response to the pollution caused by cationic organic dyes in industrial wastewater, this study employed free radical polymerization to prepare a new hydrogel adsorbent, PAA-PA-CMC, which exhibits both reusability and a large adsorption capacity. Phytic acid (PA) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) were introduced into the acrylic acid-based polymer network using N, N ‘-methylene-bisacrylamide (MBA) and glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) as cross-linking agents. Phytic acid serves as both a cross-linking agent and an active component in the adsorption of methylene blue cationic dyes. Methylene blue (MB) adsorption experiments demonstrated that PAA-PA-CMC possesses a porous structure and abundant functional groups, primarily utilizing hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions for efficient MB adsorption. The adsorption capacity of PAA-PA-CMC for MB can reach 1005.41 mg/g and has good reusability. After 5 cycles, its adsorption efficiency remains at about 85 %. The adsorption behavior of PAA-PA-CMC conforms to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm adsorption model, which is a monolayer chemical adsorption. In summary, the PAA-PA-CMC hydrogel prepared in this investigation shows great potential for treating MB dye wastewater.

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) tend to agglomerate and primarily exhibit a single condensed phase flame-retardant mechanism, limiting their application as flame retardants (FRs) for wood. In this paper, we prepared a composite FR by intercalating phytic acid (PA) into the LDH layers through anion exchange. Additionally, cellulose nanofibers (CNF) were incorporated to interact with the hydroxyl groups on the LDH surface, improving the dispersion and stability of LDH. LDH-PA-CNF exhibited excellent flame-retardant performance and good dispersibility, which was suitable for flame-retardant modification of wood. After impregnating the wood with LDH-PA-CNF, the total heat release (THR) and total smoke release (TSR) of Wood@LDH-PA-CNF decreased by 21.2 % and 56 %, respectively, compared with the untreated wood. The limited oxygen index (LOI) value of Wood@LDH-PA-CNF has been significantly improved from 21 % to 75.4 %. Based on the analysis of the composition and chemical structure of the residues and gases produced during the combustion of Wood@LDH-PA-CNF, the synergistic flame-retardant mechanism in both condensed and gas phases of LDH-PA-CNF was proposed. This study provides novel insights into the design of high-performance FRs and offers valuable clues for enhancing the homogeneous dispersion and synergistic effects of inorganic FRs.

Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) has restricted applications owing to flammability concerns, whereas conventional intumescent flame retardants predominantly utilize non-renewable feedstocks. In this work, bio-based TPU was synthesized through prepolymer methodology employing bio-based poly (trimethylene ether) glycol, pentamethylene diisocyanate, and 1,4-butanediol. Flame-retardant bio-TPU/PA composites were subsequently fabricated by incorporating bio-based phytic acid (bio-PA) as a modifying agent. Structural characterization and performance evaluation demonstrated that at 20 phr bio-PA loading, bio-TPU/PA composites exhibited decreased tensile strength (from 20.4 MPa to 9.5 MPa) and reduced elongation at break (from 502 % to 324 %). X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the crystalline structure of bio-TPU remained unaffected by bio-PA incorporation. Notably, the flame-retardant performance of the composites showed progressive enhancement as bio-PA content increased. Specifically, the peak heat release rate declined by 56.2 % (from 1216 kW/m 2 to 533 kW/m 2 ), and the average effective combustion heat exhibited a 24.4 % reduction (from 41 MJ/kg to 31 MJ/kg). This work establishes a sustainable strategy for developing flame-retardant bio-TPU composites, simultaneously addressing fire safety concerns and expanding the application potential of renewable polyurethane materials through environmentally benign modification approaches.
