Photothermal antibacterial bilayer films from konjac glucomannan/shellac: A Prussian blue-engineered strategy for preservation of fresh-cut Benincasa hispida

Xin Lei,Yueguang Wang,Xianrui Chen,Jing Zhang,Xuan Lin,Wenjun Guo,Xiuqing Guan,Chengrong Wen,Di Zhang,Lin Wang,Jie Pang

PB@MSN-CIN nanoparticles enabled CIN release with NIR-triggered photothermal conversion. • S/P-HK bilayer films combined PB@MSN-CIN-loaded P-HK inner layer with a hydrophobic SHL-QCT outer layer. • Regulating the SHL-QCT layer thickness improved moisture barrier, UV shielding, and photothermal retention of the bilayer films. • Under NIR treatment, the optimized S/P-HK film suppressed microbial growth, browning, and water loss of fresh-cut Benincasa hispida . Fresh-cut vegetables are highly susceptible to microbial growth, enzymatic browning, and moisture loss, creating a need for environmentally sustainable active packaging with effective barrier and antimicrobial functions. In this study, a multifunctional bio-based bilayer film (S/P-HK) was developed using the thickness of the hydrophobic outer layer as a key design variable. The inner active layer (P-HK) comprised a konjac glucomannan/hydroxyethyl cellulose matrix containing cinnamaldehyde (CIN)-loaded mesoporous silica nanoparticles coated with Prussian blue (PB@MSN-CIN), whereas the outer layer was composed of quercetin-containing shellac (SHL-QCT). SEM revealed a compact bilayer structure, while FT-IR, XRD, and TGA indicated intermolecular interactions and good thermal stability. Increasing the thickness of SHL-QCT layer enhanced moisture-barrier performance and heat retention under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation. Among which, the S20/P-HK film exhibited nearly complete UV shielding, strong antioxidant activity (DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging rates >80%), excellent antibacterial activity (antibacterial rates >99.99% against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus ), and controlled release of CIN. During preservation of fresh-cut Benincasa hispida , the S20/P-HK film with NIR irradiation significantly inhibited microbial growth, suppressed the browning index to 0.90 ΔOD₄₂₀·mL/g, and restricted weight loss to 0.26% over 10 days. These findings demonstrate a promising thickness-regulated bilayer design that integrates moisture-barrier protection, NIR-responsive CIN release, and photothermal antibacterial activity for active packaging. Future studies should validate the applicability of S/P-HK films to other perishable foods and evaluate their antifungal efficacy. An insect lac blanket-mimetic and degradable shellac hydrogel/chitosan packaging film with controllable gas permeation for fresh-cut vegetables preservation

Jinju Ma,Yupeng Liu,Juan Xu,Youqing Chen,Lanxiang Liu,Hong Zhang

Fresh-cut products are extremely perishable due to the processing operations, and the atmosphere environment, especially CO 2 , O 2 and H 2 O, could profoundly affect their shelf life. Herein, an insect “lac blanket”-mimetic and facile strategy was proposed for fresh-cut vegetables preservation, employing porous shellac hydrogel microparticles as gas “switches” in chitosan film to regulate CO 2 , O 2 and H 2 O vapor permeability. Thus, the shellac hydrogel/chitosan hybrid film presented the controllable and wide range of gas permeability, compared with the chitosan film. The shellac-COOH nanoscale vesicles aggregated to form shellac hydrogel network via hydrophobic binding. The shellac hydrogel microparticles played a certain lubricating effect on the hybrid film casting solution. The hydrogen bond network between shellac hydrogel and chitosan contributed to the excellent mechanical properties of the hybrid film. The hybrid film also exhibited remarkable water-resistant, antifogging properties, optical transparency and degradability. The hybrid packaging films prepared through this strategy could adjust the internal gas (CO 2 , O 2 , H 2 O and ethylene) contents within the packages, and further exhibited admirable preservation performance on three fresh-cut vegetables with different respiratory metabolisms. This gas permeation-controlled strategy has great potential in fresh food preservation and various other applications that need a modified atmosphere.

Co-assembly of quinoa protein isolate and shellac as nano-vehicles for naringenin: Characterization, formation mechanism, release behavior and cellular uptake

Ying-Ying Chen,Qiang-Ming Li,Li-Hua Pan,Jian-Ping Luo,Xue-Ying Li,Xue-Qiang Zha

Naringenin (Nar) is a natural flavonoid with diverse health-promoting benefits. However, the bioavailability of Nar is significantly restricted due to its poor water-solubility, instability under physiological conditions, and limited absorption profile. In this study, a shellac-quinoa protein isolate (QPI) binary nanocomplex (SQP) was fabricated using the pH-shifting method for effectively delivering Nar. Isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) and analysis of inner interactive forces revealed that the complexation between QPI and shellac was primarily driven by electrostatic and hydrophobic forces. Subsequently, Nar was successfully encapsulated within the stable and uniform SQP nanocomplex (Nar@SQP), achieving a high encapsulation capacity (94.52 % encapsulation efficiency and 14.68 % loading capacity). Meanwhile, the Nar@SQP nanoparticle exhibited excellent stability against pH, ionic strength, and long-term storage. Moreover, it also demonstrated sustained and slow-release characteristics during simulated gastrointestinal digestion. Compared to free Nar, the safe Nar@SQP nanoparticle effectively facilitated the cellular uptake of encapsulated Nar by Caco-2 cells, suggesting that Nar@SQP has a good potential to improve the bioavailability of Nar. Hence, these findings indicated that the developed Nar@SQP nanoparticle might hold significant promise as a nano-delivery system for hydrophobic bioactive nutrients, like Nar.

Quaternary ammonium chitosan-based film reinforced with antibacterial Pickering emulsion synergistically stabilised by shellac nanoparticles and ε-polylysine for fruit preservation

Lang Cai,Jiaqi Yang,Yanjia Wang,Fangsheng Hu,Binxin Liang,Wenting Qiu,Shixin Song,Lei Yu

This study aims to construct an antibacterial Pickering emulsion using the synergistic effect between shellac nanoparticles (SNPs) and ε-polylysine (ε-PL) to functionalise quaternary ammonium chitosan (QAC) films and apply them for fruit preservation. Results demonstrate that adjusting the ε-PL content can effectively modulate the stability, viscoelasticity and antibacterial properties of Pickering emulsions. Notably, the S-50 % ε-PL Pickering emulsion exhibits superior stability and viscoelasticity under acidic conditions and thereby effectively inhibits the growth of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus . Furthermore, the reversible transformation from demulsification to re-emulsification of an S-50 % ε-PL emulsion can be achieved by adjusting the pH. The re-emulsified Pickering emulsion exhibits physicochemical properties and demonstrates antibacterial performance similar to those of the original emulsion, indicating its excellent structural and functional recoverability. Notably, the incorporation of the S-100 % ε-PL emulsion addresses the QAC film’s limitations in terms of barrier property, thermal stability and antibacterial activity. When compared with untreated and pure QAC films, the Pickering emulsion–modified QAC films considerably inhibit microbial contamination of cherries and strawberries and delay their quality deterioration, as evidenced by key indicators, such as weight loss, pH, firmness, vitamin C, titratable acidity and total soluble solids. This study offers a novel strategy for designing antimicrobial Pickering emulsions and multifunctional biobased films.

Development and characterization of biodegradable water- and oil-resistant coatings based on derivatized cellulose, sodium alginate, and shellac for paper-based packaging

Haixin Chen,Ziyun Zhou,Bingde Zheng,Hongjie Yang,Yi Chen,Yayan Huang,Na Zhang,Xueqin Zhang,Meitian Xiao,Jing Ye,Yucheng Yang

As environmental awareness grows, developing non-toxic, environmentally friendly, and biodegradable water- and oil-resistant coating layers using bio-based materials for paper-based packaging has become a key field of research. In this work, sodium alginate (SA) and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) were used as the oil-resistant coating layer, while shellac (LAC) and ethyl cellulose (EC) formed the water-resistant coating layer, to produce a water- and oil-resistant coated paper. The effect of the mass ratio of these materials on performance was analyzed, demonstrating that the interaction between SA and CMC enhances the compactness of coating, thereby improving oil resistance. Similarly, the addition of LAC to EC increases coating compactness, which improves water resistance. The resulting coated paper has excellent water resistance (Cobb value: 3.42 g/m 2 ) and oil resistance (Kit rating: 12/12) and shows no leakage after holding hot water and hot oil for 30 min, indicating good resistance to both. Additionally, the coated paper demonstrates good mechanical properties, thermal stability, biodegradability and recyclability. The materials used are widely available and low-cost, and the preparation method is straightforward, making this research highly valuable for advancing paper-based packaging materials.

Fabrication and Characterization of Quercetagetin-Loaded Nanoparticles Based on Shellac and Quaternized Chitosan: Improvement of Encapsulation Efficiency and Acid and Storage Stabilities

Hui Zhang,Jiao Wang,Xinyu Sun,Yalan Zhang,Mengna Dong,Xin Wang,Lihua Li,Li Wang

Shellac can be used as an ideal delivery vehicle to deliver and protect the hydrophobic quercetagetin; the barriers such as low acid stability and encapsulation efficiency, however, heavily impede the application of shellac. The purpose of this work is to prepare quercetagetin-loaded shellac-quaternized chitosan nanoparticles (Que-Sh-QCS NPs) to overcome these challenges. Herein, quaternized chitosan, with 14% degree of substitution, was successfully synthesized via a quaternization modification. The concentration of quaternized chitosan over 0.05% can prevent the aggregation of shellac nanoparticles at the acid. The encapsulation efficiency of quercetagetin obviously increased from 37.92 to 65.48% with the concentration of QCS varying from 0 to 0.05%. Meanwhile, Que-Sh-QCS0.05 NPs possessed good storage stability, antioxidant property, biocompatibility, and controlled release. Therefore, quaternized chitosan can improve the encapsulation efficiency and acid and storage stabilities of nutraceutical-loaded shellac nanoparticles, providing a new insight into the application of shellac in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and food.
