Enhanced photodegradation performance and mechanism of MIL-101(Fe)@AgI@TPA/TPB photocatalyst with double Z-scheme heterojunction for oxytetracycline hydrochloride

Bolong Liang,Hongbin He,Xi Zhu,Shu-Xuan Liang

The residue of oxytetracycline hydrochloride (OTC) has emerged as a significant concern impacting both human health and the ecological environment. Photocatalysis has a good application prospect in the treatment of antibiotic pollution due to its advantages of lost cost, high efficiency and environmental friendliness, and the development of photocatalyst has become crucial for achieving effective photocatalytic degradation. The preparation of Z-scheme heterojunction is regarded as an effective strategy to enhance photocatalytic activity. Herein, double Z-scheme MIL-101(Fe)@AgI@TPA/TPB heterojunction materials were innovatively designed and successfully prepared. MIL-101(Fe)@AgI@TPA/TPB could achieve 95.09 % OTC removal efficiency under visible light irradiation in 70 min. The investigation of photoelectric properties and mechanisms revealed that MIL-101(Fe)@AgI@TPA/TPB had a broader range and enhanced ability for light absorption, along with a narrower band gap. It was determined that ·O 2 - and ·OH were the primary active species involved in the photocatalysis process. The mechanism of double Z-scheme heterojunction capable of facilitating efficient photocatalytic degradation was proposed, and the intermediate products and decomposition pathways of OTC in the photocatalytic degradation process were analyzed. This study provides innovative insights into practical application through the prepared double Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst aimed at remediating OTC contamination in water environments.

Photocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction on an ultrathin TPA-COF/UiO-66-NH₂ heterostructure with enhanced pollutant enrichment and interfacial charge separation

Guanghui Chen,Bolin Li,Zhiguang Xue,Hong Liu,Jiayao Chen,Lei Zhang,Xinguo Xi,Lanqin Tang,Yong Zhou

Constructing well-defined MOF/COF heterostructures that integrate pollutant enrichment with efficient interfacial charge separation remains challenging, as intimate interfacial contact may compromise framework integrity. Herein, an ultrathin TPA-COF/UiO-66-NH₂ heterostructure is fabricated via interfacial self-assembly of exfoliated TPA-COF nanosheets, forming a conformal COF coating while preserving the crystallinity and microporosity of UiO-66-NH₂. Microscopic, thermogravimetric, and nitrogen sorption analyses reveal a continuous ultrathin COF layer with a low yet quantifiable loading (~1.5 wt%) and a BET surface area comparable to that of the pristine MOF. Compared with the individual components and their physical mixture, the assembled heterostructure exhibits markedly enhanced photocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction, highlighting the importance of controlled interfacial integration. Comparative adsorption studies, kinetic modeling, and pH-dependent experiments indicate that Cr(VI) enrichment is closely associated with surface-charge-mediated interactions of the amine-functionalized framework. Suppressed photoluminescence, enhanced photocurrent response, and radical scavenging experiments are consistent with improved interfacial charge separation, with photogenerated electrons serving as the dominant reductive species. Band-edge analysis further suggests a staggered energy alignment that is energetically favorable for interfacial carrier transfer. These findings illustrate how combining functional-group-mediated enrichment with controlled interfacial assembly can cooperatively influence adsorption and charge-transfer processes in MOF/COF heterostructures.

Mild hydrolysis and upgrading utilization of waste PET: Preparation of regenerated TPA and MOF materials and study of their adsorption performance

Wei Lin,Meiling Zhang,Shun Zhang,Sheng Shi,Zeyu Wang,Chengyong Gao,Shuhua Wang,Enbin Zhu

Traditional alkaline hydrolysis is often used for recycling poly (ethylene terephthalate). However, its reliance on harsh conditions such as strong alkalis and high temperatures leads to equipment corrosion and environmental pollution. To address the limitations of harsh traditional hydrolysis, this study presents a mild and eco-friendly strategy using recyclable solid Li 2 CO 3 in an ethanol-water solvent. This method efficiently degrades waste PET into terephthalic acid (TPA) with >99% purity, minimizing equipment corrosion and pollution. Instead of repolymerization, the recovered TPA is upcycled to synthesize MIL-68(Al), a metal-organic framework (MOF) with superior adsorption properties. The resulting MilL-68(Al) demonstrates rapid and high-capacity adsorption for tetracycline (540.54 mg/g within 5 min), fitting Langmuir and pseudo-second-order models. Furthermore, it exhibits robust stability against environmental interference and excellent reusability, maintaining >95% efficiency after five cycles. This work offers a dual solution for plastic waste upgrading and antibiotic pollution control.

Catalytic reforming of cellulose pyrolysis volatiles over hierarchical HZSM-5: Mechanism of a protective effect of tetrapropylammonium (TPA+) during alkali treatment

Xin-Bo Pang,Jing-Pei Cao,Nai-Yu Yao,Jing-Ping Zhao,Tian-Long Liu,Shi-Jie Cai,Hong-Yan Wang,Yan-Cheng Hu,Xiao-Yan Zhao

A series of HZSM-5 with hierarchical pores was obtained by using a modified NaOH treatment method. This modification incorporated the use of tetrapropylammonium bromide. Furthermore, their catalytic performance for reforming of cellulose pyrolysis volatiles at 600 °C was investigated. TPAB-assisted alkali treatment increased the mesoporosity, relative crystallinity, and surface integrity of ZSM-5. Additionally, a significant portion of the acidic sites was preserved. The 0.1TPAB-0.2AT, treated with 0.1 M TPAB and 0.2 M NaOH, yielded the highest light aromatics at 156.9 mg/g. The coking resistance of the catalyst was also improved. Tetrapropylammonium (TPA + ) achieves surface protective desilication by selectively adsorbing Si(0Al) on the zeolite. Subsequently, the continuous adsorption of TPA + leads to mesopore formation within the zeolite. This continuous restriction on desilication limits the increase in mesopore volume, resulting in a relatively abundant and uniform distribution of smaller mesopores on ZSM-5. This mechanism holds promise for future synthesis of highly mesoporous ZSM-5.

Liensinine improves AngII-induced vascular remodeling via MAPK/TGF-β1/Smad2/3 signaling

Peizhi Jia,Daxin Chen,Ying Zhu,Meiling Wang,Jianwei Zeng,Ling Zhang,Qiaoyan Cai,Dawei Lian,Chunyu Zhao,Yaoyao Xu,Jianfeng Chu,Shan Lin,Jun Peng,Wei Lin

Ethnopharmacological relevance Liensinine(Lien, C 37 H 42 N 2 O 6 ) is an alkaloid compound from plumula nelumbinis that demonstrates an antihypertensive effect. The protective effects of Lien on target organs during hypertension are still unclear. Aim of the study : This study aimed to understand the mechanism of Lien during the treatment of hypertension, with emphasis on vascular protection. Materials and methods Lien was extracted and isolated from plumula nelumbinis for further study. In vivo model of Ang II-induced hypertension, non-invasive sphygmomanometer was used to detect the blood pressure in and out of the context of Lien intervention. Ultrasound was used to detect the abdominal aorta pulse wave and media thickness of hypertensive mice, and RNA sequencing was used to detect the differential genes and pathways of blood vessels. The intersection of Lien and MAPK protein molecules was detected by molecular interconnecting technique. The pathological conditions of abdominal aorta vessels of mice were observed by HE staining. The expression of PCNA, α-SMA, Collagen Type Ⅰ and Collagen Type Ⅲ proteins were detected by IHC. The collagen expression in the abdominal aorta was detected by Sirius red staining. The MAPK/TGF-β1/Smad2/3 signaling and the protein expression of PCNA and α-SMA was detected by Western blot. In vitro , MAPK/TGF-β1/Smad2/3 signaling and the protein expression of PCNA and α-SMA were detected by Western blot, and the expression of α-SMA was detected by immunofluorescence; ELISA was used to detect the effect of ERK/MAPK inhibitor PD98059 on Ang Ⅱ-induced TGF-β1secrete; and the detection TGF-β1and α-SMA protein expression by Western blot; Western blot was used to detect the effect of ERK/MAPK stimulant12-O-tetradecanoyl phorbol-13-acetate (TPA) on the protein expression of TGF-β1 and α-SMA. Results Lien displayed an antihypertensive effect on Ang Ⅱ-induced hypertension, reducing the pulse wave conduction velocity of the abdominal aorta and the thickness of the abdominal aorta vessel wall, ultimately improving the pathological state of blood vessels. RNA sequencing further indicated that the differential pathways expressed in the abdominal aorta of hypertensive mice were enriched in proliferation-related markers compared with the Control group. The profile of differentially expressed pathways was ultimately reversed by Lien. Particularly, MAPK protein demonstrated good binding with the Lien molecule. In vivo, Lien inhibited Ang Ⅱ-induced abdominal aorta wall thickening, reduced collagen deposition in the ventral aortic vessel, and prevented the occurrence of vascular remodeling by inhibiting MAPK/TGF-β1/Smad2/3 signaling activation. In addition, Lien inhibited the activation of Ang II-induced MAPK and TGF-β1/Smad2/3 signaling, attenuating the expression of PCNA and inhibiting the reduction of α-SMA, collectively playing a role in the inhibition of Ang Ⅱ-induced hypertensive vascular remodeling. PD98059 alone could inhibit Ang Ⅱ-induced elevation of TGF-β1 and the decrease of α-SMA expression. Further, PD98059 combined with Lien had no discrepancy with the inhibitors alone. Simultaneously TPA alone could significantly increase the expression of TGF-β1 and decrease the expression of α-SMA. Further, Lien could inhibit the effect of TPA. Conclusion This study helped clarify the protective mechanism of Lien during hypertension, elucidating its role as an inhibitor of vascular remodeling and providing an experimental basis for the research and development of novel antihypertensive therapies.

Essential oils of Zingiber officinale: Chemical composition, in vivo alleviation effects on TPA induced ear swelling in mice and in vitro bioactivities

Zhang Silu,Zhang Lijun,Yu Mengjie,Luo Donghui,Chen Shuai,Liu Weifeng,Zhang Yehui,Zhang Lanyue,Zhao Tiantian

Zingiber officinale (ZO) is a traditional food condiment. The essential oils of Z. officinale (ZOEOs) are known to have multiple bioactivities. In this study, gas chromatography mass spectrometer (GC-MS) analytical method was used to identify active ingredient present in ZOEOs. A total of 41 compounds were identified in ZOEOs. Major components in ZOEOs were zingiberene (19.71%), (+)-β-cedrene (12.85%), farnesene (12.17%), α-curcumene (10.18%) and β-elemene (3.54%). Experimental results of 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13 acetate (TPA) induced ear swelling validation mice model showed that ZOEOs treatment has better anti-inflammatory effect compared with ibuprofen (positive control) at high concentrations. Histological and immunohistochemical analysis showed that ZOEOs significantly decreased COX-2, IL-6 and NF-κB expression in a dose dependent manner. The mRNA levels of COX-2 and NF-κB were also down regulated by the application of ZOEOs. This indicated that ZOEOs exhibited positive effects in ear skin protection. Antibacterial experimental results showed that EOZOs had anti-bacterial effects on Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus. DPPH radical scavenging, A549 cell line and LNCaP cell line inhibition results indicated that ZOEOs exhibited potential antioxidant and anti-tumor properties. The findings of these study provide scientific basis on therapeutic use of ZO in food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries.

Yu Chen,Lejing Chi,Xiaoxin Liang,Yaohui Shi,Tongyun Wu,Mao Ye,Ping Han,Li Lin,Lanyue Zhang,Peng Xu,Zhiyun Du

Cedrus deodara is a cedar plant from the Pinaceae family. Because Cedrus is widely used in health care products, cosmetics, medicine, and insecticides, the essential oils of Cedrus deodara (CDEOs) are gaining increasing levels of attention. However, there have only been a few studies on the anti-inflammatory effects of CDEOs. This study aimed to systematically study the composition and biological effects of CDEOs, in line with this, the study assessed the chemical composition of CDEOs and evaluated their anti-inflammatory mechanisms in mice. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was used to determine and analyze a total of 41 compounds from CDEOs. It was found that the major components of CDEOs are thujopsene (28.23%), α-cedrene (17.01%), and cedrol (15.55%); moreover, our results showed that the active ingredients in CDEOs have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects and that the active ingredients in CDEOs can be used as an antioxidant, as an important biological resource in functional food, and as ingredients in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Taken together, these CDEOs serve as ideal additives for anti-inflammatory drugs.

Optimizing nonlinear absorption via modulating π-electron delocalization in multi-ring conjugated cores: from TPA at 515/650 nm to broad temporal response

Jidong Jia,Jia Liu,YinLin Lu,Hang Zuo,Xingzhi Wu,Yinglin Song

Nonlinear absorption across distinct temporal regimes is central to laser-relevant optical attenuation in organic media. Here we engineer branched anthracene chromophores by inverting the direction of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) between peripheral branches and a polycyclic conjugated core (branch→core versus core→branch), enabling mechanistic comparison within a unified molecular platform. Quantum-chemical calculations (DFT/TD-DFT) together with femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy corroborate the directional ICT characteristics and reveal the formation of a charge-transfer state (CTS) in both architectures. Open-aperture Z -scan measurements demonstrate two-photon absorption (TPA) at 515 nm and 650 nm under 190 fs excitation, with effective NLA coefficients of (1.2 ± 0.1) × 10 −2  cm/GW and (6.3 ± 0.4) × 10 −3  cm/GW for Molecule 2, respectively (negligible in the reference analogue). In addition, pronounced nanosecond excited-state absorption (ESA) at 532 nm under 4 ns excitation is observed for Molecules 2–4, whereas the reference analogue (Molecule 1) shows negligible response. Mechanistically, CTS formation enhances nanosecond ESA, whereas core→branch ICT markedly strengthens the femtosecond TPA by expanding π-electron delocalization, as supported by computed transition densities. These results establish a practical structure–property rule linking ICT direction, π-delocalization, and CTS-mediated pathways for tailoring broadband ESA and multi-timescale nonlinear absorption in solution-processable organic systems.

The preparation of TPA monomer through the pathway of waste PET steam pyrolysis using high H/C ratio gas as external hydrogen donors

Zhiwen Wang,Yi Li,Linwen Wang,Chunhong Chen,Qing Zhou,Dongxia Yan,Junli Xu,Jiayu Xin,Xingmei Lu

A novel Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) steam pyrolysis method is developed by introducing high H/C ratio gas to produce terephthalic acid (TPA) monomer. CH 4 , C 2 H 6 , C 2 H 4 , C 3 H 8 , and C 3 H 6 were used as external hydrogen donors to upgrade the waste PET steam pyrolysis process, which were proven to be effective. Under optimized conditions (H 2 O flow rate of 0.1 mL/min, C 3 H 8 flow rate of 2 mL/min, heating rate of 0.5 °C/min, and final pyrolysis temperature of 450 °C), the H 2 O/C 3 H 8 /N 2 system achieved a product yield increase from 32.69% to 93.15% and a TPA purity improvement from 26.57% to 90.73%, with complete elimination of coke residues. Isotope tracing experiments using D 2 O confirmed the dual roles of H 2 O in hydroxyl substitution and hydrogen transfer, with C 3 H 8 compensating for hydrogen deficiency from H 2 O and enhancing the hydrogen transfer pathway. Through DFT calculations, the pathways and mechanisms of PET steam pyrolysis using C 3 H 8 as an external hydrogen donor were proposed, demonstrating that H 2 O and C 3 H 8 synergistically mediate the oriented pyrolysis of PET toward TPA by supplying ·OH and ·H radicals. This method offers a new idea for directional pyrolysis to prepare monomers, which is of great significance for achieving the recycling of waste plastics.

Photothermal catalysis without solvent for fixing CO2 to cyclic carbonate

Luping Zhang,Xuewei Tu,Yutong Chen,Weihang Han,Liangchen Chen,Can Sun,Shouxin Zhu,Yanjiang Song,Hui Zheng

Photocatalytic cycloaddition of CO 2 with epoxides to produce cyclic carbonate is a hot research topic for achieving carbon neutrality. In this work, a catalyst (CoFe 2 O 4 @TPA) with bimetallic oxides doped with organic ligands was synthesized, which could efficiently fix CO 2 to synthesize cyclic carbonate in solvent-free and atmospheric environment by photothermal catalysis. Various characterization results suggest that the catalyst exhibited efficient photocatalytic performance upon the addition of organic ligands (TPA). This pathway of using photocatalytic catalytic reactions under simple conditions provides a new idea for the synthesis of valuable compounds from fixed CO 2 .

Near-infrared AIEgens for lipid droplets imaging in corpus adiposum or trachea of Locusta migratoria and its application in photodynamic therapy

Fei Zhang,Yaoming Liu,Binsheng Yang,Guangming Wen,Bin Liu

To recognize the lipid droplets (LDs) on the surface of trachea and realize the visualization of trachea, three TPA-based red/NIR fluorophores with high electron donor-acceptor (D-A) strength were designed and synthesized. These molecules showed donor-donor-π-acceptor (D 1 -D 2 -π-A) structure with the character of twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT). The photophysical experiment displayed that they had aggregation-induced emission (AIE) performance with red/NIR fluorescence. These AIEgens showed high sensitivity to LDs in living PC12 cells and excised corpus adiposum of Locusta migratoria . The visualization of the trachea is realized due to the large number of LDs distributed on the surface. Also, such compounds can effectively produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) with the irradiation of white light, demonstrating the potential photodynamic therapy (PDT) application on cancer cells. Moreover, the simulated experiment of ROS transferring from LDs simulator (trioctanoin) to cytoplasmic matrix (PBS) was carried out.

Aggregation-induced emission activity of sensor TBM-C1 hybrid of methoxy-triphenylamine (OMe-TPA) and dicyanovinyl for cyanide detection in aqueous THF: Mechanistic insights and potential applications

Tian Xie,Yuanyuan Li,Mengjie Zhang,Li Wang,Yingchu Hu,Kun Yin,Suhua Fan,Hai Wu

A series fluorescent probes (TBM-C x ( x  = 1, 4, 8)) were designed based on embedding various alkoxy chains on the electron donor of triphenylamine (TPA)-based dicyanovinyl (MT) compound with an electron-deficient benzothiadiazole (BTD) for sensitive, selective, and visualizing detection of cyanide in aqueous solution. Due to the nucleophilic addition of CN − , the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) of these probes was inhibited by the destroyed conjugated structure, exhibiting excellent “turn-on” fluorescence response toward cyanide anion (CN − ) in tetrahydrofuran (THF). However, the alkoxy chains with different lengths embedded in TPA not only enhance the sensitivity and solubility, but also regulate the emission behavior from ICT to aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics. The binding mechanism and AIE sensing performances between the probes and CN − have been investigated and compared in THF/water mixture by spectral tools and theoretical calculations. The results showed that the ICT-based TBM-C1 probe with methoxy chain showed significantly turn-on fluorescence response to CN − as low as 0.077 μM in THF/water solution at high water fraction (90 %). Due to the AIE sensing process, TBM-C1 was successfully employed to determine CN − in food and water samples, image CN − in living cells and BALB/c mice, and prepare test kits for visualizing cyanide.
