Preparation of TiO2/Black Talc Composite Photocatalyst and the Research on Its Adsorption-Degradation Coupling Effects

Huan Shuai,Yuxin Wang,Jiao Wang,Gaoxiang Du,Daimei Chen,Yu Liang

In this paper, a TiO2/black talc composite photocatalyst was prepared by the sol-gel method using TBOT as titanium source and black talc as carrier. Rhodamine B was used as the targeted pollutant to study the adsorption role of carbon in black talc. The results showed that with the adsorption-degradation cycles, the illumination time can be reduced by 40%. The adsorption rate and degradation rate of the composite photocatalyst was also increased. The degradation rate of Rhodamine B reached more than 95%, which fully shows the synergistic effect between TiO2nanoparticles and black talc. In this way, the adsorption-degradation coupling of the photocatalyst could be realized.Keywords:nano-TiO2particles;black talc;characteristic adsorption;photodegradation;synergistic effect

Heterostructured ZIF-8/lamellar talc composites incorporated polydimethylsiloxane membrane with enhanced separation performance for butanol recovery

Xu Zhang,Fangzhi Liu,Lusheng Xu,Zehai Xu,Chong Shen,Guoliang Zhang,Qin Meng,Congjie Gao

In this study, heterostructured MOF/lamellar talc composites was successfully synthesized by in-situ growth of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanoparticles on acidified black talc (ABT) and introduced into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix to prepare high-performance mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) via spin coating and thermal cross-linking. The submicron-size natural lamellar black talc (BT) was first explored as stable carrier to synthesize laminated composite with continuous MOF phase. Owing to its silica-oxygen tetrahedral structure, the resultant laminated composite presented good compatibility with PDMS matrix, avoiding the formation of interfacial defect between polymer and nanoparticles. Moreover, well-dispersed and continuous ZIF-8 nanoparticles on lamellar nanosheets had preferential adsorption effect for alcohol, enhancing the selectivity of membranes. The coupling effects of graphene-like lamellar structure from talc and sequential transport channels from ZIF-8 attributed to greatly enhance permeation flux. Various techniques such as FESEM, TEM, FTIR, XRD and EDS were applied to investigate the morphology and structure of composites and membranes, and pervaporation experiments were applied to probe the behavior of polymer-based composite membranes . High performance defect-free ZIF-8@ABT/PDMS MMMs exhibited excellent total permeate flux of 1711 g m −2  h −1 with very competitive separation factor of 41 for low concentration n-butanol recovery.

The application of KMnO4 in reverse flotation separation of chalcopyrite and talc and its selective depression mechanism

Yu Xie,Xiaoqi Ban,Wanzhong Yin,Ningbo Song,Jin Yao

Talc exhibits excellent floatability and, as a major silicate gangue mineral associated with chalcopyrite, significantly obstructs the purification and smelting of chalcopyrite. This study investigates the reverse flotation separation of chalcopyrite and talc using KMnO 4 as a depressant and DDA (dodecylamine) as a collector within a reverse flotation system. Single mineral flotation experiments show that after adding KMnO 4 , the recovery of chalcopyrite in 38–74 μm is only 6.86 %, whereas the recovery of talc in 45–106 μm and 25–45 μm are 93.47 % and 89.25 %, respectively. Further experiments with artificially mixed ores demonstrate that KMnO 4 effectively achieves the separation of chalcopyrite and talc. The depression mechanism of KMnO 4 on chalcopyrite and talc was analyzed using Zeta potential, contact angle measurement, AFM (atomic force microscopy), FTIR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy), XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy), and DFT (density functional theory) calculations. Mechanistic analysis indicates that in an alkaline environment, chalcopyrite can undergo a redox reaction with KMnO 4 , forming hydrophilic hydroxide species (Cu(OH) 2 , Fe(OH) 3 ) on the chalcopyrite surface, which depresses chalcopyrite flotation. In contrast, the surface properties of talc are relatively stable and difficult to react with KMnO 4 , which cannot depress the flotation of talc. Therefore, KMnO 4 can be used as an efficient and selective depressant for the reverse flotation separation of chalcopyrite and talc.

Efficient selective flotation separation of talc and molybdenite with a novel molybdenite depressant: Remarkable performance and mechanism

Mengyao Qi,Zhenkai Luo,Weijun Peng,Wei Wang,Yijun Cao,Longyu Zhang,Yukun Huang

The separation of talc and molybdenite is a challenging and research hotspot in mineral processing. In the work, a nitrous acid ester depressant (M−DEP) was first synthesized and used as a molybdenite depressant for the separation of talc and molybdenite via reverse flotation. Flotation tests of single-mineral and multi-mineral samples were carried out to evaluate the effect of M−DEP on the flotation behavior of molybdenite and talc. Zeta potential, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy were used to analyze the selective depression mechanism of M−DEP on molybdenite and talc. Furthermore, the adsorption behavior of M−DEP on specific crystallographic planes of minerals has been studied by contact angle, atomic force microscope, and DFT calculation. Flotation experiment results indicated that M−DEP had excellent selective depression on molybdenite in the pH range of 5 to 10. The results of mechanism analysis showed that M−DEP could be adsorbed on molybdenite “basal” surface by hydrophobic interaction, and on molybdenite “edge” surface by chemical interaction, while could not be adsorbed on the surface of talc due to electrostatic repulsion. M−DEP enlarged the surface floatability difference between talc and molybdenite and promoted the efficient separation of talc and molybdenite via reverse flotation.

A general strategy for vertically aligned heterostructures: Liquid metal-dominated thermal conduction enabled by talc nanosheet encapsulation

Xiaoyang Feng,Sijin Yan,Jie Zhang,Yunqiang Guo,Zenghui Qu,Ye Sheng,Tongshun Wu,Guangjun Nan,Luyi Zou

One-step chlorosulfuric acid-H 2 O 2 intercalation for talc exfoliation & hydroxylation. • A strategy of “surface modification − solution-phase self-assembly − oriented compression”. • LTC exhibits an out-of-plane thermal conductivity of 14.356 W·m −1 ·K −1 . • Expands the application of low-cost talc in TIMs. The miniaturization and high integration of microelectronic devices demand thermal interface materials (TIMs) with both high thermal conductivity and electrical insulation. Although abundant and low-cost, talc exhibits intrinsically low thermal conductivity (∼2.5  W·m −1 ·K −1 ), limiting its thermal management applications. Here we propose a tailored design strategy: using exfoliated talc nanosheets (TNS) as a 2D encapsulating scaffold for liquid metal (LM) to construct vertically oriented LM-dominated thermal pathways. Hydroxylated TNS were first prepared via a one-step chlorosulfonic acid/H 2 O 2 method. Thiomalic acid was used as a bifunctional molecular bridge to uniformly anchor LM droplets onto TNS. Subsequent pressure-induced alignment preferentially orients TNS along the vertical direction, resulting in preferentially vertically aligned liquid metal networks. Despite talc’s low intrinsic conductivity, the resulting LM/TNS@CR (LTC) composite achieves an out-of-plane thermal conductivity of 14.356 ± 0.147  W·m −1 ·K −1 while maintaining excellent electrical insulation. This work not only utilizes low‑cost talc for the fabrication of thermal management materials, but also establishes a viable design framework: using vertically oriented liquid metal networks as the primary heat‑transport channels and employing exfoliable layered mineral hosts as encapsulating scaffolds, thereby achieving high thermal conductivity, electrical safety, and leakage suppression. The influence of viscoelasticity of elastomer on flow marks in injection molding of polypropylene/polyolefin elastomer/talc composites

Yiwei Zhang,Jiewei Hu,Wenbo Song,Fasheng Zou,Jie Zhang

Polypropylene/elastomer/filler composites are one of the most commonly used materials for spray-free automotive parts to meet the requirements of lightweight. However, its application is serious affected by the flow marks on the surface. Therefore, the reduction or elimination of flow marks defect is important to improve surface quality. In this work, polyolefin elastomer was slightly crosslinked to study its effect on flow marks. The results show that the slightly crosslinking significantly increases the elasticity of elastomer, which makes the melt flow more stable. Meanwhile, the enhanced elasticity is beneficial not only to resist shear deformation of elastomer, but also to recover from deformation during injection molding. As a result, the difference of dispersed phase morphology and surface gloss is reduced, and the flow marks defect is improved. The slightly crosslinked elastomer has little effect on the processability and tensile properties of composites, while the impact properties increase marginally.

Fabrication of a novel hydrophobic zinc borate/polydopamine/talc nanocomposite with sandwich-like structure for enhanced tribological properties

Wenqin Lu,Danni Hu,Huang juan Li,Zhenfei Feng,Huayu Hu,Yanjuan Zhang,Tao Gan,Zuqiang Huang

Two-dimensional layered materials (2DLMs) as lubricant additives have received increasing attention due to their low interlaminar shear stress, outstanding chemical stability and lubrication effects, but the extreme pressure properties, dispersion and dispersion stability in base oils are poor. Herein, a hydrophobic zinc borate/polydopamine/talc (OA-ZB/PDA/TA) nanocomposite with sandwich-like structure is prepared by hydrothermal-assisted intercalation combined with mechanical activation process using natural talc 2DLMs as substrate and oleic acid (OA) as a surface hydrophobic modifier and peeling aid. No obvious sedimentation of OA-ZB/PDA/TA occurs in the rapeseed oil after 15 d, while pure TA is significantly deposited after 12 h, showing superior dispersion and dispersion stability. The OA-ZB/PDA/TA used as a lubricant additive in rapeseed oil exhibits excellent tribological performances under the loads from 147 to 784 N, particularly, wear scar diameter and coefficient of friction reduce by 51.4 and 33.7 % under 392 N, respectively, and the maximum nonseizure load ( P B ) increases by 27.0 % relative to pure TA. The TA-ZB-TA "sandwich-like" structure gives full play to the synergistic lubrication between ZB NPs and TA, resulting in the sliding and rolling effects under low load, friction film and rolling effect under medium load, and friction film under high load. Our work provides a new avenue for the enhanced extreme pressure properties and dispersion stability of 2DLMs in base oil.

Efficient Molybdenite-Talc flotation separation Mediated by the Synergistic chelation and hydrophobic effect of a novel heterocyclic inhibitor

Wei Chen,Yuhan Long,Qiqiao Liu,Yuhang Che,Ying Wang,Qing Sun,Hao Chen

Separating talc from molybdenite is notoriously difficult in practice, mainly because both minerals share a strong natural hydrophobicity and readily undergo hetero-coagulation. To overcome the shortcomings of conventional depressants, such as poor selectivity and molecular entanglement, this study developed a novel heterocyclic depressant, (Z)-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-1,2,3-oxy-sulfur-azacyclic octanedione (TOD). TOD combines a carbon chain backbone with sulfonate groups, which allows it to selectively depress talc through a dual mechanism: hydrophobic engagement and specific chelation of magnesium ions. Density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics simulation (MDS) results reveal that TOD adsorbs on the basal plane of talc via hydrophobic attraction and concurrently chelates Mg sites along the edges. In situ optical microscopy and Extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (EDLVO) theory further support that TOD disrupts hydrophobic attraction between molybdenite and talc particles, markedly reducing their tendency to adhere. Contact angle, zeta potential, Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), and adsorption measurements consistently demonstrate that TOD adsorbs preferentially onto the talc basal plane. This adsorption significantly reduces talc’s hydrophobicity and drops its surface potential below –35  mV, shifting the talc–molybdenite system from aggregation toward dispersion. In micro-flotation tests with sodium isobutyl xanthate as collector, TOD created a 39.26% recovery gap between talc and molybdenite, demonstrating strong selective depression and promising potential for industrial application.

Fabrication of talc reinforced transparent fire-retardant coating towards excellent fire protection, antibacterial, mechanical and anti-ageing properties

Long Yan,Xinyu Tang,Zhisheng Xu,Xiaojiang Xie

To enhance the fire safety of historic buildings, developing fire-retardant coatings with integrated decoration, fire protection, ageing resistance and antibacterial performances is imperative. Here, a novel multifunctional transparent fire-retardant coating with fire protection, smoke suppression, antibacterial and anti-ageing functions was successfully fabricated using talc as a multifunctional synergist. Mechanical tests show that the multifunctional coating containing talc shows an improvement in pencil hardness and adhesion classification while keeping a high transparency. Moreover, adding talc is conductive to fabricate a physical barrier with super compactness and intumescence, which endows the coatings with excellent fire protection and smoke suppression functions. Especially, when the mass ratio of PPB to talc is 95:5, the obtained MTPPB3 coating retains a high-level transparency of 85.8%, accompanying with a 72.6% reduction in flame spread rating and a 57.0% reduction in smoke density rating compared to MTPPB0 without talc. TG analysis shows that the multifunctional coatings containing talc exhibit sharp enhancements in thermal stability and char yield, and MTPPB3 retains 32.7% residue at 800 °C. Meanwhile, the addition of talc results in high antibacterial rate against E. coli bacteria and durable flame-retardant and smoke suppression effects, and MTPPB3 shows an antibacterial rate of 99.0% against E. coli bacteria. This work provides a promising way to fabricate multifunctional transparent fire-retarded coatings with outstanding functions of decoration and fire protection.

Synthesis of Schiff base polymer/black talc nanocomposites based on m-phenylendiamine with enhanced separation performance for lead adsorption

Xiaohui Li,Zehai Xu,Qin Meng,Yu Chen,Lushen Xu,Guoliang Zhang

In this study, we have developed a facile in -situ hydrothermal oxidative polymerization method to synthesize poly N,N(1,3-phenylene)dimethanimine/KH550-black talc (PNPD/KH550-BT) nanocomposites for efficient removal of lead (II) (Pb 2+ ) in wastewater. This method employed eco-friendly solvent, offered a simple and cost-effective preparation procedure and resulted in a nanocomposite complex that displayed exceptional resistance to dissolve in various organic solvents, simplifying the separation process. Through the hydrothermal oxidative polymerization process, polymerization was promoted to generate spherical flower-like structures, effectively improving the dispersion of polymers on black talc nanosheets. Substantial concentration of sturdy lead-complexing groups was created, including N–H, –C N, and –NH 2 , which heightened the attraction to Pb 2+ ions and maximized the effective utilization of lead binding sites. Compared with KH550-BT and PNPD, the adsorption performance of PNPD/KH550-BT composites on Pb 2+ was significantly enhanced, and the largest adsorption capacity of lead (II) on PNPD/KH550-BT nanocomposites reached 867.1 mg/g. Moreover, the prepared nanocomposites had satisfactory adsorption potential after undergoing 10 cycles, showing good stability during adsorption. This work not only provides a new strategy to control the microstructure of polymer-based composite adsorbent but also presents various promising functionalized nanocomposites based on different polymers and minerals for application in vast fields.

Novel synergistic mechanism of oxalic acid -CMC at the solid-liquid interface: For selective depression of talc from chalcopyrite

Hulin Gao,Jian Liu,Jiamei Hao,Xu Bai,Runpeng Liao

Flotation separation of chalcopyrite and talc is challenging due to their surface hydrophobicity, requiring a selective depressant for talc to achieve high-quality copper concentrate. This study is the first to use oxalic acid (OA) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as combined depressants for talc, and investigated the depression mechanism through flotation tests and various analysis techniques. Mixed minerals-flotation results showed that with 60+60 mg/L OA+CMC, talc was strongly depressed (10.16% recovery) with slight chalcopyrite (86.54% recovery) impact. The selective depression effect of OA+CMC was further verified through actual ore flotation experiments. Contact angle and zeta potential test indicated that OA+CMC significantly increased the hydrophobicity difference between talc and chalcopyrite surfaces. Adsorption capacity and atomic force microscope(AFM) results further confirmed that OA promotes CMC adsorption on talc surface, forming a dense CMC layer, whereas CMC adsorption on chalcopyrite was relatively low. Scanning electron microscope energy spectrum spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR), and molecular dynamics (MD) results indicate that the synergistic depression mechanism of OA and CMC involves the formation of multiple adsorption layers at the solid-liquid interface, leading to an increased presence of hydrophilic groups on the talc surface, which results in its depression.

Flotation separation of chalcopyrite from talc using carboxylated chitosan as a depressant and insight into its selective adsorption mechanism

Xianwen Zhu,Runqing Liu,Bo Feng,Wenchao Dong,Qilin Zhai,Wei Sun

A novel depressant, CCS, has been developed for the selective inhibition of talc minerals. • Efficient flotation separation of chalcopyrite from talc can be achieved under natural pH conditions. • The adsorption of CCS onto the talc surface is predominantly physical in nature. • This work offers a green and efficient strategy for the comprehensive recovery of copper from talc-bearing ores. In the flotation of sulfide ores, easily floatable gangue minerals such as talc can adversely affect flotation efficiency. Therefore, effective depressants are commonly employed to selectively inhibit talc flotation. This study investigates the application of carboxylated chitosan (CCS), an environmentally friendly and non-toxic talc depressant, in the flotation separation of chalcopyrite and talc. The flotation test results show that under neutral pH conditions, with CCS as a depressant and butyl xanthate as a collector, efficient separation of chalcopyrite and talc can be achieved. Adsorption capacity measurements, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy analyses indicated that CCS preferentially adsorbs onto the talc surface rather than onto the chalcopyrite surface. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis revealed that the interaction between CCS and the talc surface is primarily physical adsorption. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further confirmed that CCS exhibits weaker adsorption affinity for the chalcopyrite surface, thereby facilitating the subsequent adsorption of butyl xanthate (BX) onto chalcopyrite and enabling its flotation separation from talc. Collectively, this study provides theoretical guidance for the use of CCS as an effective talc depressant in the flotation separation of chalcopyrite and talc.
