Rhombic-like Al nanosupporter-based fluorescent immunochromatographic assay for the sensitive detection of tetracycline

Feier Bai,Tong Bu,Meng Zhang,Yongming Tian,Xinyu Sun,Pei Jia,Yalan Zhang,Rui Li,Shuang Zhao,Kunyi He,Li Wang

Fluorescence-based lateral flow immunoassay (FLFIA) is a prospective technology in detecting tetracycline (TET). However, the existing fluorescent materials (FMs) often require cross-linkers to bind with antibodies (Abs) to form FLFIA FM-Ab probe, which complicates the modification process and may affect the fluorescence intensity of FMs. Herein, the rhombic-like Al nanosupporter (RAlNS) was prepared via a one-step hydrothermal method and used for designing fluorescence nanosupporter for FLFIA to detect TET in real samples. The RAlNS not only possessed excellent water stability, strong fluorescence intensity and favorable thermal stability, but also could adsorb Abs to obtain FMs-Ab probe by simple centrifugation. Under optimal conditions, the limit of detection (LOD) of RAlNS-FLFIA was 0.0516 ng/mL ( n  = 3), which was 18 times lower than traditional colloidal gold-based LFIA. Meanwhile, the proposed sensor also exhibited high specificity for TET against other antibiotics. Furthermore, the RAlNS-FLFIA was successfully applied to the detection of TET in beef, chicken, milk and honey samples, separately, which demonstrated a significant recovery of 80.40–112.05%. The novel RAlNS-FLFIA provided great potential for the detection of various analytes in food analysis.

Artificial nucleation sites with stable SEI for Li metal anodes by aggressive Al pulverization

Feihong Ren,Zhendong Li,Yun Zhu,Patrice Huguet,Stefano Deabate,Deyu Wang,Zhe Peng

Uneven nucleation and fragile solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) restrict the practical application of lithium (Li) metal anode. A versatile strategy to simultaneously overcome these two drawbacks is critical for Li metal batteries (LMBs). Herein we propose an “aggressive aluminum (Al) pulverization” strategy to form abundant artificial nucleation sites and robust SEI films adjacently, leading to homogeneous Li deposition/stripping and high Li Coulombic efficiency. A core-shell structure with Al core and alumina-silica (Al 2 O 3 –SiO 2 ) shell, Al@Al 2 O 3 –SiO 2 (AAS), could be easily synthesized, by modulating the chemical diffusion of silicon (Si) element towards Si–Al alloy surface. The active SiO 2 sites not only contribute to form the robust SEI layer, but also facility the lithiation of the AAS, accelerating the conversion of reversible Li–Al alloy into inert Li 3 Al 2 phase. The as-generated AAS with Li 3 Al 2 and Li 12 Si 7 phases possess negligible Li nucleation over-potential (~0.7 mV), serving as an optimal structure for dendrite-free Li plating/stripping with a prolonged life-span of 6 times longer than that of the unprotected counterpart in carbonate electrolytes.

Combustion performance of composite propellants containing core-shell Al@M(IO3)x metastable composites

De-Yun Tang,Zhi-Min Fan,Guangcheng Yang,Yinglei Wang,Pei-Jin Liu,Qi-Long Yan

Aluminum (Al) has been widely used in solid composite propellants (SCPs) to increase the specific impulse. However, Al always subjects to coalescence , sintering to large agglomerations during combustion of SCPs resulting in larger two-phase flow losses. Herein, core-shell μ-Al@M(IO 3 ) x composites have designed and synthesized as a replacement for micron-sized Al (μ-Al) in the Al/AP/RDX/HTPB propellant with tunable combustion behavior. The results show the thermal reactivity and heat releases of SCP are largely enhanced by using these novel metal-based composites. With the inclusion of μ-Al@EGCG@Fe(IO 3 ) 3 (EGCG: Epigallocatechin gallate), the major exothermic peak is reduced by 29.1 °C compared to the reference propellant with a heat release increase up to 5475 J g −1 , exceeding that of the reference sample (86 J g −1 higher). The burn rates are increased with the inclusion of μ-Al@(MIO 3 ) x , while the pressure exponent is higher. The SCP-1 (0.3), SCP-2 (0.18) and SCP-4 (0.25) that have relatively low pressure exponent and high burn rates are good candidates for future applications. The major condensed combustion products (CCPs) of these SCPs are Al 2 O 3 , Al 2.81 O 3.56 N 0.44 , Al 4 C 3 , Al 2 OC, AlN and C 7 H 18 ClN. The agglomeration can be reduced with a minor inclusion of μ-Al@M(IO 3 ) x due to the enhanced interfacial reactions, and the average CCP sizes (0.5 μm for SCP-1 and SCP-4) are even smaller than that of initial μ-Al (1.2 μm).

Liquid Al assisted electrochemical extraction of lanthanum by formation of Al11La3 in chloride melts

De–Bin Ji,Pu Wang,De–Qiang Ji,Mi–Lin Zhang,Hong–Jun Wu

In this work, different electrochemical measurements were employed to investigate the electrochemical behavior of La(III) on W and liquid aluminum electrodes, respectively. In LiCl–KCl melts, the diffusion coefficients of La(III) on W electrode at different experimental temperatures were determined by chronopotentiometry. The cyclic voltammetry results obtained on liquid aluminum electrode revealed only one pair of redox signal corresponding to the formation of Al–La intermetallic compound in LiCl–KCl–LaCl 3 melts. The diffusion coefficient of La atom on the liquid Al–La alloy electrode was evaluated by anodic chronopotentiometry at 973 K. The electrochemical extraction of La was realized by galvanostatic electrolysis on a liquid aluminum electrode in LiCl–KCl–LaCl 3 melts at 973 K, and the phases of Al 11 La 3 and Al were identified by XRD . The SEM images disclosed needlelike precipitates in alloy, and the element La mainly distribute in the needlelike precipitates. After electrolysis, the extraction efficiency of element La was evaluated to be 99.4%, indicates that the electrochemical extraction of lanthanum with the help of liquid aluminum cathode is feasible in practice.

Ni–Mg–Al Catalysts Effectively Promote Depolymerization of Rice Husk Lignin to Bio-Oil

Du Boyu,Chen Changzhou,Sun Yang,Liu Bingyang,Yang Yingying,Gao Si,Zhang Zhenshu,Wang Xing,Zhou Jinghui

Abstract Catalytic depolymerization of lignin to produce bio-oil, liquid fuels, and aromatic chemicals in high yields is important for a biorefinery to remain competitive. In this study, undoped and Ni-doped catalysts for depolymerization of rice husk lignin (RHL) were developed and analyzed. The results showed that the catalysts had hydrotalcite-like structures with lamellar morphology. With suitable Ni-doping amount, the catalysts had high activity, thus better promoted the depolymerization of RHL. Among all catalysts, the Ni1/4MgAl catalyst could best promote the cleavage of the β-O-4 aryl ether bond in RHL molecule and thus could substantially increase the yields of bio-oil. The depolymerization catalyzed by this catalyst was also found to be temperature-, time-, and solvent-dependent. This study provides information that can be beneficial to the biorefinery industries and may help promote the valorization of lignin. Graphic Abstract

Liquid gallium as long cycle life and recyclable negative electrode for Al-ion batteries

Handong Jiao,Shuqiang Jiao,Shijie Li,Wei-Li Song,Haosen Chen,Jiguo Tu,Mingyong Wang,Donghua Tian,Daining Fang

Although rechargeable Al batteries attract interests due to their features of abundant Al source and high safety, the Al negative electrodes suffer from critical problems, including dendrite, corrosion, pulverization, non-recyclable Al wastes, etc. For addressing these challenges, here a novel liquid gallium is demonstrated for negative electrodes of Al batteries. The results show that the liquid gallium negative electrode enables the reversible alloying/dealloying between Al and Ga. Remarkably, the essential problems in the solid Al negative electrodes, including dendrite, corrosion and pulverization, would be well avoided attributed to the liquid state of the Ga electrode during cycling. In addition to the enhanced stable cycling performance, Ga negative electrode is also recyclable, allowing the cycled Ga for further presenting stable cycling in the re-assembled batteries, and which is helpful for its practical application. The results in the present work open a precedent way to develop the advanced negative electrode with dendrite-free, corrosion resistant and recyclable features and advantages for various types of rechargeable batteries.

Corrosion resistance and superhydrophobic properties of organic hybrid coating on cast Al–Si alloy

Xuelin Huang,Liang Yu,Yinsheng Dong

In this paper, a multiple hybrid coating (MHC) with good corrosion resistance and superhydrophobic property on the surface of cast Al–Si alloy was synthesized via a simple dip-coating method by using organosiloxane containing hydrophobic mullite-SiO 2 (M–S) particles as a precursor. The morphology, composition and water contact angle (WCA) of the coatings were investigated by SEM, FT-IR, XRD and OSA100, respectively. The results showed that the hydrophobic M–S particles was synthesized through modified Stöber method, which has a micro- and nano- scale structures. In addition, the morphology of the MHC presented that a dense and uniformly cover on the Al–Si alloy substrate formed a superhydrophobic surface with the WCA ∼153.4°. The corrosion protection of MHC was evaluated by using the Tafel polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The coating with M–S particles exhibited much better corrosion resistance property than that of the untreated substrate and pure organosiloxane coating (OSC). The E corr was obviously more positive than that of them. Moreover, the corrosion current density of MHC was remarkably decreased by 5 and 3 orders of magnitude compared with other two coatings, respectively. The corrosion resistance of the MHC decreased gradually with increasing immersing time. However, the R ct value of MHC was still 2.31 × 10 6  Ω cm 2 after 168 h immersion testing in 0.6 M NaCl solution, which was nearly 322-fold higher than that of untreated substrate. Owing to the excellent superhydrophobic, corrosion resistance and long-term stability, the MHC possesses potential application in corrosion resistance of cast Al–Si alloy.

Orientation Relationships and Interface Structure in MgAl2O4 and MgAlB4 Co-Reinforced Al Matrix Composites

Fucheng Wang,Jiajun Li,Chunsheng Shi,Enzuo Liu,Chunnian He,Naiqin Zhao

Ceramic phase reinforced aluminum matrix composites (CAMCs) are widely used in high-tech fields represented by aerospace industry due to their advantages of high specific strength, high specific modulus, high thermal stability, and light weight. Strong interface bonding is a prerequisite for high performance of multiphase materials. Herein, a novel CAMC in situ reinforced by MgAl2O4 particles and MgAlB4 nanorods was prepared by vacuum hot-pressing combined with hot-extrusion process. A high-resolution transmission electron microscope was used to characterize the orientation relationship and interface structure between the ceramic phases and the aluminum matrix. Two orientation relationships (OR1 and OR2) of MgAl2O4/Al and one (OR3) of MgAlB4/Al are determined: OR1-[011]p//[011]Al, (11̅1)p//(11̅1)Al; OR2-[211]p//[011]Al, (113̅)p//(022̅)Al; OR3-[101̅0]R//[001]Al, (0002)R//(2̅20)Al. The MgAl2O4 in OR1 forms a coherent interface with the aluminum matrix at (111) surface, while they form a 4 × 5 near coincidence site lattice (CSL) interface structure for OR2. In OR3, the MgAlB4 forms an approximate coherent interface with Al matrix at its (0002) surface and a 2 × 5 CSL interface structure at its (011̅0) surface. First-principles calculations suggest that MgAl2O4 combines to aluminum at (111) plane through covalent bonds, which means high interfacial bonding strength. The hot-extrusion process makes the ceramic phase evenly distributed in the matrix. The mechanical properties of the composites are greatly improved compared with pure aluminum.

Experimental and theoretical investigations into propane dehydrogenation over MIL-101(Cr/Al) derived catalysts

Rongzhao Li,Chengtao Zhang,Shuo Li,Yupeng Du

Propane dehydrogenation is commonly operated at temperatures exceeding 600 °C due to thermodynamic requirements. However, high temperature accelerates the deactivation of catalysts because of the coke deposition. Therefore, it is quite necessary to develop catalysts with high catalytic activity and improved anti-coking ability. To this end, an Al-doped Cr 2 O 3 catalyst derived from MIL-101(Cr/Al) is prepared in this work. The preparation conditions, including the carbonization temperature of MIL-101 and the proportion of Cr/Al, are optimized via experimental studies. Meanwhile, the adsorption and dehydrogenation behaviors of propane on the catalyst are investigated using Density Functional Theory (DFT) methods. Findings indicate that the optimum carbonization temperature and Cr/Al proportion are 900 °C and 6:4, respectively. Under the reaction condition of P = 0.1 MPa, T = 580 °C and GHSV = 800 h −1 , the propane conversion and propylene selectivity on the Cr 6 /Al 4 catalyst are 19.5% and 92.0%, respectively. The activity stability of the Al-doped Cr 2 O 3 is elongated significantly due to the lower desorption energy of propene and higher energy barrier for the coke formation on the catalyst. In sum, the present work completed via experiments and DFT calculations will lead to a better understanding of the Al-doped Cr 2 O 3 catalyst and guide the rational design of anti-coking catalysts for propane dehydrogenation.

Sulfonic acid functionalized Al-based MIL-101-NH2 modified separator for lithium-sulfur batteries

Shirui Pang,Yuxin Liu,Zhe Zhang,Yuxin Li,Chunguang Li,Zhan Shi,Shouhua Feng

The transmembrane diffusion of soluble lithium polysulfides (LiPS) is the main cause of capacity loss and negative electrode corrosion in lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. In order to suppress the shuttle effect of LiPS, a selective permeability membrane was constructed by introducing functional materials with negative charge groups. Herein, a functional separator with high ion conductivity is obtained by casting the environmentally friendly MOF material sulfonic acid functionalized amino-MIL-101 (S-MIL-101) onto the separator. It is found that the functionalized sulfonic acid group not only accelerates the conduction of the lithium-ion but also repels the polysulfide anion through electrostatic interactions . With this functionalized separator, the initial capacity of batteries is 1444.6 mAh·g −1 at 0.2C and remains 990.4 mAh·g −1 after 100 cycles. Meanwhile, the batteries still deliver a high initial discharge capacity of 895.7 mAh·g −1 even with the high-sulfur-loading cathode (4.7 mg cm −2 ) at 0.2C.

Enhancing the Ignition and Combustion Performances of Solid Propellants Incorporating Al Particles Inside Oxidizers

Ruixuan Xu,Minghui Yu,Zhihua Xue,Haorui Zhang,Qi-Long Yan

The combustion efficiency of Al plays a critical role in the combustion of high-energy aluminum-based solid propellants. For traditional formulations, the Al powders are dispersed in the binder matrix, leading to limited contact with the oxidizers and hence usually insufficient combustion and higher values of the pressure exponent. In this paper, various core–shell structural Al/oxidizer composites such as Al@HMX, Al@AP, and AP@Al have been prepared by a spray-drying technique based on which solid propellants with precise interfacial control between Al particles and oxidizers were realized. Compared to the control sample, the modified propellants have a greater heat of explosion of 5890 J g–1 (15% higher) and a reduced ignition delay time of 58 ms (65% decrease). Without changing the content of components, the burn rates of propellants can be easily modulated by tuning the interfacial contact of Al and oxidizers, where it varies in a wide range of 4.56–5.79 mm s–1 at the same pressure of 1 MPa. After introducing Al/oxidizer composites, the lowest pressure exponent of 0.19 within 1–15 MPa could be achieved by using Al@HMX and AP@Al composites. The agglomeration of Al was also inhibited by using Al/oxidizer composites, and the mechanism can be interpreted by using a classical “pocket” model. Moreover, the improved combustion efficiency of the solid propellants was verified by a noticeable reduction in the unreacted Al content.

Catalytic conversion of lignin into monoaromatic hydrocarbons over a Ni/Al hydrotalcite-derived catalyst

Deshi Yang,Jianpeng Huang,Zhipeng Hu,Yuanyuan Miao,Fengqiang Wang,Zhijun Zhang,Yanjun Xie,Shouxin Liu,Qingwen Wang,Charles U. Pittman

Lignin is the most abundant aromatic biopolymer. Thus, preparation of BTX (benzene, toluene and xylenes) by catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) of lignin is attractive. Ni-Al mixed metal oxide (MMO) catalysts, derived from pyrolyzing Ni-Al layered double hydroxides (LDH), were prepared for the catalytic fast pyrolysis of lignin. The effects of catalyst Ni/Al ratio, catalyst dosage and pyrolysis temperature on the liquid products were investigated by Py-GC/MS. The Ni 3 Al 3 -MMO produced the best liquid product distribution from lignin at 700 ℃. The selectivity of Ni 3 Al 3 -MMO for aliphatic hydrocarbons and monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (MAHs) was 18.0% and 78.2%, respectively. The selectivity to polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was 3.8%. No phenols and phenolic derivatives were produced. This is related to the mesoporous catalytic structure (pore size of 14.37 nm), large external surface area (134.74 m 2 /g) and strong acidity (4.92 mmol NH3 /g) of Ni 3 Al 3 -MMO. In addition, a mechanistic study was performed with the lignin model compound (guaiacol) showing that Ni 3 Al 3 -MMO exhibits strong deoxygenation activity for aromatic C–O bond cleavage of lignin.
