Plantation poplar is one of the most commonly used fast-growing woods in China. However, it is susceptible to weathering due to climatic conditions such as sunlight irradiation, rain, temperature changes, and oxidation. Ultraviolet (UV)-induced discoloration is a noticeable problem of this wood during its outdoor use. In this study, titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) nanoparticles were deposited onto a wood surface via a bridge of 3-isocyanatopropyltriethoxysilane (IPTS). Accelerated weathering tests were conducted by exposing wood veneers to UV, water spraying, and condensation for 336 h to evaluate the treatment effect on their anti-weathering properties. During treatment, TiO 2 nanoparticles were bonded with IPTS and grafted onto the wood surface via the isocyanate group. The nanoparticles functioned as a UV filter and reduced photodegradation, while IPTS helped prevent the wood from collapsing. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed that the photodegradation of lignin during weathering was effectively inhibited after treatment. After artificial weathering for 192 h, the color difference (Δ E ) of both untreated and IPTS-treated woods increased up to 40 while that of IPTS-TiO 2 -treated wood increased only to 12. The results suggest that IPTS-TiO 2 modification is feasible for improving the anti-weathering properties of poplar wood and may provide an effective strategy for industrial wood modification.

Utilizing end-of-life poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) as a carbon source for the production of value-added chemicals has attracted increasing interest in recent years. In this report, an organocatalytic pyrolysis method was explored for chemical recycling of PHB into trans -crotonic acid (CA). Under relatively mild conditions and through the promotion of organic base catalysts, the CA was recovered with high efficiency and yield. The effect of reaction conditions on the depolymerization process, such as types of catalysts, solvent polarity, temperature, and molar equivalents of PHB to catalyst, was investigated in detail. This work is the first to achieve the pyrolysis of PHB using organic base catalysts, which provides a green and efficient option for plastic degradation and promotes the development of circular plastic economy.

Organic anion transporters (OATs in humans, Oats in rodents) play an important role in the distribution and excretion of numerous endogenous metabolic products and exogenous organic anions , including a host of widely prescribed drugs. Their ligand recognition is also important for drug therapy and development. In this study, the n -butanol and dichloromethane soluble fractions of Juniperus oblonga were found to inhibit OAT3 in vitro and three biflavonoids were found to be responsible for this activity. One of these compounds, amentoflavone exhibited stronger inhibition than probenecid, a known strong inhibitor of OAT3. Biological characterization of amentoflavone in vivo also showed inhibition of Oat3. Preliminary observations of structure-activity relationships suggest that the biflavonoids are more potent inhibitors of this transporter than their corresponding monomer, and that methylation of even a single hydroxyl group results in a substantial decrease in activity. This greater potency of the biflavonoids may indicate the need for a more in-depth investigation of the distribution of biflavonoids in plants used as foodstuffs and herbal medicines, due to their potential for causing interactions with OAT3 substrate drugs.

The graphene oxide (GO) was prepared by the Hummers method, and then functionalized by 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane. Functionalized graphene oxide (FGO) was characterized by using Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TG). The results show that 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane reacted with hydroxyl group of graphene oxide. The FGO have a sheet-like structure with wrinkles. The shifts of XRD peaks to low degree for FGO indicate the occurrence of intercalation of 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane and as well as increase in the thermal stability.

Novel nanocubic KTi2(PO4)3 was successfully fabricated via a facile hydrothermal method combined with a subsequent annealing treatment and further evaluated as an electrode material for potassium-ion batteries for the first time. For comparison, carbon-coated KTi2(PO4)3 obtained by a normal cane sugar-assisted method reveals improved electrochemical performances in potassium-ion batteries. This work may give a new insight into developing electrode materials for potassium-ion batteries.

Accurately reconstructing the intricate structure of natural organisms is the long-standing goal of 3-dimensional (3D) bioprinting. Projection-based 3D printing boasts the highest resolution-to-manufacturing time ratio among all 3D-printing technologies, rendering it a highly promising technique in this field. However, achieving standardized, high-fidelity, and high-resolution printing of composite structures using bioinks with diverse mechanical properties remains a marked challenge. The root of this challenge lies in the long-standing neglect of multi-material printability research. Multi-material printing is far from a simple physical assembly of different materials; rather, effective control of material interfaces is a crucial factor that governs print quality. The current research gap in this area substantively hinders the widespread application and rapid development of multi-material projection-based 3D bioprinting. To bridge this critical gap, we developed a multi-material projection-based 3D bioprinter capable of simultaneous printing with 6 materials. Building upon this, we established a fundamental framework for multi-material printability research, encompassing its core logic and essential process specifications. Furthermore, we clarified several critical issues, including the cross-linking behavior of multicomponent bioinks, mechanical mismatch and interface strength in soft–hard composite structures, the penetration behavior of viscous bioinks within hydrogel polymer networks, liquid entrapment and adsorption phenomena in porous heterogeneous structures, and error source analysis along with resolution evaluation in multi-material printing. This study offers a solid theoretical foundation and guidance for the quantitative assessment of multi-material projection-based 3D bioprinting, holding promise to advance the field toward higher precision and the reconstruction of more intricate biological structures.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a microvascular complication of diabetes mellitus, and its main clinical manifestation is retinal vascular dysfunction. DR causes blindness and is a problem with significant global health implications. However, treating DR is still challenging. In this study, we aimed to explore the role of polo-like kinase-3 (PLK-3) and the potential regulatory mechanism in DR. Sprague-Dawley rats were injected intraperitoneally with streptozotocin (STZ, 60 mg/kg) to induce a rat model of DR, and rat retinal microvascular endothelial cells (RRMECs) were treated with high glucose (HG, 25 mmol/L glucose) to develop a cell model of DR. We found that PLK-3 was significantly downregulated in the retinal tissues of STZ-induced diabetic rats and HG-induced RRMECs. Lentivirus-mediated PLK-3 overexpression alleviated the histological damages in DR rats. After HG stimulation, cell proliferation, migration, and angiogenesis in RRMECs were inhibited after PLK-3 upregulation. By using label-free proteomics, we identified 82 differentially expressed proteins downstream of PLK-3, including BRCA1-associated protein 1 (BAP1), which was significantly upregulated in PLK-3-overexpressed RRMECs compared to control cells under the HG condition. In vivo and in vitro assays indicated that the forced expression of PLK-3 increased the phosphorylation of BAP1 at serine 592 and caspase-8 expression. Detailed evidence showed that BAP1-shRNA-mediated knockdown restored the cell function in HG-treated RRMECs when PLK-3 was overexpressed. Collectively, this study shows that PLK-3 alleviates retinal vascular dysfunction in DR by inhibiting the phosphorylation of BAP1. Thus, PLK-3 may develop as a promising target for the therapy of DR.

Novel development of high-loading bamboo flour/PHBV biocomposites. • Synergistic treatment of bamboo flour via delignification and impregnation of coupling agents. • Surface roughness and chemical interactions benefitted interfacial adhesion. • Enhanced interfacial bonding contributed to mechanical and thermal property improvement. This paper presents a novel development of bamboo flour/poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) biocomposites with a particular focus on addressing the interfacial bonding through a synergistic treatment. The synergistic strategy involves the delignification of bamboo flour followed by impregnation of PHBV-based coupling agents synthesised in this work, including maleic anhydride (MA)-grafted PHBV (MA- g -PHBV), acrylic acid (AA) grafted-PHBV (AA- g -PHBV) and itaconic anhydride (IA) grafted-PHBV (IA- g -PHBV). Chemical structural analyses of bamboo flour suggested the removal of lignin and the possible interactions between surface hydroxyl groups and the introduced anhydride/carboxyl groups after the synergistic treatment. Microstructure analysis suggested the treated bamboo flour with increased surface roughness had better interfacial adhesion with PHBV matrix in the composites, which was further confirmed by their lower loss factor. The tensile strength and flexural strength of MA- g -PHBV modified delignified bamboo flour/PHBV composite were increased by 333.3% and 250.4% respectively, compared to those of the untreated counterpart. The improved interfacial bonding also resulted in the shift of composite failure mechanism from fibre pull-out to fibre breakage. The work provides a feasible and effective modification approach of lignocellulosic fibres for enhancing fibre-matrix interfacial bonding in biobased and biodegradable composites.

Polyethylene is among the most widely-used coating materials due to the excellent physical and mechanical properties . However, the chemical inertness and poor solubility limit the application of polyethylene in coating. In this study, hyperbranched polyethylene-based graft copolymers containing functional oxetane groups (HBPE- g -POXMA) were synthesized via chain walking polymerization (CWP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) in tandem. Macroinitiators were first synthesized via CWP of ethylene and trimethyl(undec-10-en-1-yloxy) silane following deprotection and esterification reaction. Subsequent ATRP of 3-ethyl-3-(methacryloyloxy) methyloxetane was performed to yield functional polyethylene with controlled molecular weight (MW), relatively narrow MW distribution, good solubility in organic solvents as well as pendant oxetane groups for photopolymerization . Finally, cationic photo-curing of HBPE- g -POXMA was conducted to build crosslinked polyethylene layers on polypropylene membrane surface. The composite membrane showed a narrow pore size distribution (0.03–0.63 μm) and an average pore size of merely 0.31 μm, which exhibited a retention ratio of over 90 % for different dyes. The strategy developed in this study could provide a synthetic route to hyperbranched polyethylene for functional coating via cationic photo-curing.

The desirability of acid-resistant nanofiltration (NF) membranes having superior acid stability with good separation performance for industrial acid wastewater treatment and reclamation is currently in high demand. Here, we presented a new sulfonated-based acid-resistant NF membrane prepared by the crosslinking and participation action of 3,3′-diaminodiphenyl sulfone (DDS) via the synthesis of branched polyethyleneimine (BPEI) and 1,3-benzenedisulfonyl chloride (BDSC). By optimizing the preparation conditions, the BP-DDS/BD membrane exhibited an improved pure water flux of 13.4 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 and a MgCl 2 rejection of 97.3% for 1000 ppm. It also shows desirable rejection (>90%) and adsorption capacities for selected heavy metals. In addition, an excellent pressure resistance at different operating bars was achieved. Benefiting from the strong and stable S O bond present in DDS, the optimized BP-DDS/BD membrane displayed an outstanding acid stability at different acid immersion conditions while also maintaining impressive long-term stability of 240 h after 30 days acid exposure period. The polysulfonamide (PSA)-based NF membrane presented in this work therefore demonstrated viable and promising usefulness in wastewater treatment containing acid and heavy metal ions removal.

Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a cardiac disorder, which affects around 12% diabetic patients, resulting in overt heart death. Our initial bioinformatic analysis identified the differentially expressed gene 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A synthase 2 (HMGCS2) in DCM, which may be activated by peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-alpha (PPARα) based on previous evidence. Therefore, the present study aims to explore the effect of PPARα on the development of DCM through regulating HMGCS2. The expression of PPARα and HMGCS2 was detected by reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction in cardiomyocytes and high-glucose-cultured cardiomyocytes. The proliferation and apoptosis of cardiomyocytes were examined by 5-ethynyl-2′-deoxyuridine assay and flow cytometry, separately. Mitoehondrial membrane potential (MMP) and intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels were determined. Then, the protein levels of B-cell lymphoma 2, Bcl-2-associated X protein, and cleaved Caspase-3 were detected by Western blot analysis. The myocardial apoptosis index, heart weight, and serum lipids of rats were examined. At last, the expressions of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), transforming growth factor β1 (TGFβ1), peroxisome proliferator activator receptor gamma coactivator-1 alpha (PGC1α), nuclear respiratory factor (NRF)-1, NRF-2, NAD(P)H oxidase 1, and superoxide dismutase-1 were examined. HMGCS2 was the most differentially expressed gene in DCM. The levels of HMGCS2 and PPARα were upregulated in patients with DCM. HMGCS2 silencing was shown to inhibit HMGCS2 expression to suppress the apoptosis of high-glucose-induced cardiomyocytes and the loss of MMP, reduce the accumulation of ROS, and promote cardiomyocyte proliferation. Silencing of HMGCS2 and PPARα alleviated myocardial injury, decreased blood glucose, and lipid in DCM rats, downregulated the expression of ANP, BNP, and TGFβ1 to reduce myocardial injury, and elevated PGC1α, NRF-1, and NRF-2 levels to enhance oxidative stress levels. Our results demonstrated that silencing of PPARα could alleviate cardiomyocyte injury and oxidative stress via a mechanism related to the downregulation of HMGCS2, which could provide a novel target for DCM treatment.
