BiVO4 nanoparticles and Ag nanoparticles co-decorated with tubular carbon nitride: A ternary heterostructure photocatalyst for degradation of organic pollutants in water

Lin Gao,Chunjian Ai,Liang Liang,Xiuying Li,Xue Lin,Junyou Shi

Photocatalytic technology represents an effective and cost-efficient approach to the degradation of organic pollutants. This paper presents an investigation into the degradation ability of ms -BVO/TCN/Ag composite for organic pollutants at different ratios. The 7.5% ms -BVO/TCN/Ag sample was observed to exhibit the most effective degradation performance under visible light irradiation, with degradation rates of 83.12% and 84.45% for TC and DEP in 120 min. This is attribute to the distinctive tubular configuration of TCN, which enhances the number of reactive sites. The addition of Ag nanoparticles to TCN expands the light absorption spectrum of TCN through the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect. Furthermore, the construction of Z-scheme heterojunctions between TCN/Ag and ms -BVO preserves the robust redox capabilities of these components while mitigating the rapid complexation of photogenerated electron pairs. This paper presents a novel strategy and approach for the further construction of heterojunctions, based on the morphological control of carbon nitride.

Photoelectrochemical sewage treatment by sulfite activation over an optimized BiVO4 photoanode to simultaneously promote PPCPs degradation, H2 evolution and E. coli disinfection

Zexiao Zheng,Juhua He,Chencheng Dong,Irene M.C. Lo

A new photoelectrochemical (PEC) system by means of adding sodium sulfite (Na 2 SO 3 ) was developed to treat sewage. The PEC system simultaneously promoted pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) degradation, H 2 evolution and E. coli disinfection using an optimized, visible–light driven BiVO 4 photoanode. The PEC reactions were first carried out in 1.5 mM Na 2 SO 3 electrolyte. 92.3% of 2 ppm benzophenone-3 (BZP) was degraded, and 115.36 μmol of H 2 was produced in 90 min at 1.0 V vs. Ag/AgCl, which was a significant improvement over cases where the electrolyte was either Na 2 SO 4 or NaCl. The sulfite ions were first activated by holes and then converted into sulfate radicals, which played a dominant role in the degradation of BZP. As the holes were caught by the sulfite, charge separation was also enhanced, increasing H 2 evolution. The PEC reactions were also used to treat real sewage, in which case an 82% improvement in the rate constant of BZP degradation, 60% increase of H 2 evolution, and 0.78 log enhancement of E. coli disinfection were achieved by adding 1.5 mM Na 2 SO 3. The system was also feasible to degrade various PPCPs, and showed excellent reusability and stability, proving its great potential in sewage treatment.

Magnetic field weakening carrier secondary recombination in/on amorphous Co0.07Fe0.93Ox co-catalysts to boost BiVO4/Co0.07Fe0.93Ox film photoanodes for solar water splitting

Yujie Huang,Jinyan Du,Xianchun Jin,Jiahe Li,Lingling Liao,Tao Han,Gaili Ke,Huichao He

Amorphous and magnetic Co 0.07 Fe 0.93 O x nanoparticles were coupled on BiVO 4 film to form BVO/CFO photoanode. • Higher water oxidation activity was achieved on BVO/CFO photoanode than BVO photoanode. • Under magnetic field the activity of BVO/CFO photoanode was improved by 29.83% that was 10 times to the improvment on BVO photoanode. • Magnetic field reduces carrier secondary recombination in/on CFO co-catalysts but not change water oxidation kinetics. Amorphous co-catalysts/BiVO 4 photoanodes could achieve high-activity solar water oxidation, but the amorphous co-catalysts usually lack selectivity for electrons/holes extraction from BiVO 4 and exist carrier secondary recombination accordingly. Herein, amorphous Co 0.07 Fe 0.93 O x nanoparticles with magnetic property were coupled on BiVO 4 film to form BiVO 4 /Co 0.07 Fe 0.93 O x (BVO/CFO) film photoanode for solar water oxidation under magnetic field. In magnetic field-free condition, the BVO/CFO film photoanode had higher solar water oxidation activity (2.380 mA/cm 2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE) than BVO film photoanode (1.205 mA/cm 2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE), due to the presence of CFO co-catalysis. Under an external magnetic field of 8 mT, the solar water oxidation activity of BVO film photoanode was increased by 2.98% through magnetic field weakening the nonradiative recombination of carrier, relative to it in magnetic field-free condition. By comparison, the activity of BVO/CFO film photoanode for solar water oxidation under same magnetic field was improved by 29.83% (2.380 mA/cm 2 to 3.090 mA/cm 2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE), which was 10 times to the improvment on BVO film photoanode. In addition, the BVO/CFO film photoanode had more stable activity during continuous solar water oxidation than BVO film photoanode under magnetic field. Mechanism investigations revealed that magnetic field can significantly reduce the carrier secondary recombination in/on amorphous magnetic CFO co-catalysts to boost BVO/CFO film photoanode for solar water oxidation, but not change the reaction kinetics obviously. A new explanation of the different photocurrents of BiVO4 photoanode under front and back illumination: Surface hole transfer effected by illumination directions

Xi Chen,Jian'an Chen,Yi Li,Miao Wang,Hanna Potapenko

Using solar energy for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting is a popular way to store sustainable energy and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Bismuth vanadate (BiVO 4 ) is a promising photoanode material for solar water splitting. In previous studies, it was found that different light directions of the BiVO 4 photoanode produced different photocurrents. It was generally accepted that the carrier transport of BiVO 4 was the reason that causes different photocurrents under different light directions. However, in addition to carrier transport, surface hole transfer may also be an important factor leading to different photocurrents under different light directions, but it has been ignored. In this work, the surface hole transfer efficiency of the BiVO 4 photoanode under front- and back-side illumination was calculated, and the fractional occupancy of surface states was analyzed by photoelectrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results show that the hole transfer efficiency under front irradiation is about 1.56 times that under back irradiation at 0.1 sun illumination and about 1.2 times that under back irradiation at 1 sun illumination. Under front illumination, the surface of the BiVO 4 photoanode can directly absorb light, which leads to a decrease in the fractional occupancy of surface states, thereby reducing the probability of electron-hole recombination and improving the efficiency of hole transfer. These findings provide a new explanation for the different photocurrents of the BiVO 4 photoanode under different light directions and demonstrate the effectiveness of photoelectrochemical impedance spectroscopy under different light directions for analyzing the surface states of photoelectrodes.

An optimization strategy for photo-Fenton-like catalysts: Based on crystal plane engineering of BiVO4 and electron transfer properties of 0D CQDs

Xueying Zhang,Yonggang Liu,Yunpu Zhai,Yonghao Yu,Yaxin Guo,Shiduo Hao

Herein, we report a novel Cu 2 (OH) 3  F/CQDs-BiVO 4 composite photo-Fenton-like system, which used BiVO 4 and Cu 2 (OH) 3 F as electron donor and acceptor, respectively, and achieved efficient electron transfer between them through the electron bridging effect of Carbon quantum dots (CQDs). The material exhibited excellent ciprofloxacin (CIP) removal efficiency in the photo-Fenton-like coupled system. Cu 2 (OH) 3  F/CQDs-BiVO 4 had an incredibly fast response rate, eliminating 98.1% of CIP from the solution in just 1 h, according to the reaction kinetics. Exploratory tests proved that the catalyst kept up a sufficient level of activity across a wide pH range of 3–11 and in the presence of various anions. The activity, morphology, and crystal structure of the samples did not appreciably alter after five recycles. Finally, a possible reaction mechanism was also proposed based on the band structure, position and reaction species.

Preparation and characterization of Bi2SiO5/BiVO4 n–n isotype heterojunction composites as a visible-light-induced photocatalyst for tetracycline and levofloxacin degradation

Wang Ze-Hong,Jia Yun-Ning,Wu Xiang-Feng,Song Meng-Chen,Ma Xiao-Ye,Wang Hui,Zhang Xue-Feng

Semiconductor photocatalysis is a promising method to solve the problem of antibiotic pollution in water. A series of Bi 2 SiO 5 /BiVO 4 composite photocatalysts for tetracycline and levofloxacin degradation are prepared by a two-step hydrothermal method. Analysis results show that the as-prepared Bi 2 SiO 5 /BiVO 4 (2:3) hybrid exhibits better photocatalytic activity than pure samples under visible light illumination. The photocatalytic degradation efficiency of the as-prepared composite shows the maximum of 72.2% within 120 min for tetracycline, which is higher than 43.5% of pure Bi 2 SiO 5 and 67.2% of pure BiVO 4 , respectively. Furthermore, it is 80.3% within 120 min for levofloxacin, which is higher than 7.6% of pure Bi 2 SiO 5 and 69.7% of pure BiVO 4 , respectively. The formation of n–n isotype heterojunction at the interface of Bi 2 SiO 5 and BiVO 4 in the as-prepared composites causes to the improvement of the transport rate and separation efficiency of the photogenerated electron and hole pairs. In addition, the holes play a dominant role in the photocatalytic degradation process. This work will provide a reference for the study of visible light driven photocatalysts to solve antibiotics pollution in water.

Hierarchically Z-scheme photocatalyst of {0 1 0}BiVO4/Ag/CdS with enhanced performance in synergistic adsorption-photodegradation of fluoroquinolones in water

Boqiang Gao,Yu Pan,Qianqian Chang,Zhonghua Xi,Hu Yang

In this work, the sheet-like BiVO 4 with a higher exposure ratio of {0   1   0} facets was synthesized by the addition of TiCl 3 , and the ratio of (0   4   0)/(0   1   1) on {0   1   0}BiVO 4 was 2.85 times higher than that of normal decahedral BiVO 4 . Accordingly, the {0   1   0}BiVO 4 /Ag/CdS all-solid-state Z-scheme heterojunction was further constructed by photoreduction of Ag and chemical deposition of CdS on the well prepared {0   1   0}BiVO 4 successively. The performance and mechanism of {0   1   0}BiVO 4 /Ag/CdS in synergistic adsorption-photodegradation of fluoroquinolones (FQs) from water were investigated in detail. The adsorption-photodegradation could be divided into three processes: adsorption, surface degradation, and solution degradation, with the rate constants of 0.118, 0.029, and 0.012 min −1 , respectively. Accordingly, the adsorption was a rapid process due to the combined CdS in this composited photocatalyst had a high affinity to FQs to achieve an adsorption equilibrium on the surfaces<30.0 min. Besides, {0   1   0}BiVO 4 /Ag/CdS had a better separation efficiency of photogenerated electron-hole pairs than BiVO 4 /Ag/CdS, because the enriched {0   1   0} facets of {0   1   0}BiVO 4 caused more BiVO 4 /Ag/CdS ternary structure formed, and>90% photodegradation efficiency for five FQs ( C 0  = 0.062 mmol/L) was thus obtained within 60.0 min. The radical trapping and EPR results showed that holes and superoxide radicals were the main active species for FQs photodegradation. In summary, {0   1   0}BiVO4/Ag/CdS achieved an enhanced performance in synergistic adsorption and photodegradation of organic contaminants from water, and a talented photocatalyst was thus provided in water and wastewater treatment.

Synergy Effect of the Enhanced Local Electric Field and Built-In Electric Field of CoS/Mo-Doped BiVO4 for Photoelectrochemical Water Oxidation

Yuan Guan,Xinyi Gu,Qiankun Deng,Shaomang Wang,Zhongyu Li,Shicheng Yan,Zhigang Zou

Bismuth vanadate is a promising material for photoelectrochemical water oxidation. However, it suffers from a low quantum efficiency, poor stability, and slow water oxidation kinetics. Here, we developed a novel photoanode of CoS/Mo-BiVO4 with excellent photoelectrochemical water oxidation performance. It achieved a photocurrent density of 4.5 mA cm–2 at 1.23 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode, ∼4 times that of BiVO4. The CoS/Mo-BiVO4 photoanode also exhibited good stability, and the photocurrent density generated by the CoS/Mo-BiVO4 photoanode did not significantly decrease after light irradiation for 2 h. Upon replacement of part of the V with Mo doping in BiVO4, the local electric field around the Mo–O bond was enhanced, thus promoting carrier separation in BiVO4. The CoS was deposited on the surface of Mo-BiVO4, forming a built-in electric field at the interface. Under the action of the bias electric field and the built-in electric field, the carriers of CoS/Mo-BiVO4 were efficiently separated in the direction of the inverse type II heterojunction. In addition, CoS improved the light absorption and charge injection efficiency of the CoS/Mo-BiVO4 photoanode.

PEC/Colorimetric Dual-Mode Lab-on-Paper Device via BiVO4/FeOOH Nanocomposite In Situ Modification on Paper Fibers for Sensitive CEA Detection

Xu Li,Jiali Huang,Jiayu Ding,Mingzhen Xiu,Kang Huang,Kang Cui,Jing Zhang,Shiji Hao,Yan Zhang,Jinghua Yu,Yizhong Huang

A dual-mode lab-on-paper device based on BiVO4/FeOOH nanocomposites as an efficient generating photoelectrochemical (PEC)/colorimetric signal reporter has been successfully constructed by integration of the lab-on-paper sensing platform and PEC/colorimetric detection technologies for sensitive detection of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). Concretely, the BiVO4/FeOOH nanocomposites were in situ synthesized onto the paper-working electrode (PWE) through hydrothermal synthesis of the BiVO4layer on cellulose fibers (paper-based BiVO4) which were initially modified by Au nanoparticles for improving the conductivity of three dimensional PWE, and then the photo-electrodeposition of FeOOH onto the paper-based BiVO4to construct the paper-based BiVO4/FeOOH for the portable dual-mode lab-on-paper device. The obtained nanocomposites with an FeOOH needle-like structure deposited on the BiVO4layer exhibits enhanced PEC response activity due to its effective separation of the electron–hole pair which could further accelerate the PEC conversion efficiency during the sensing process. With the introduction of CEA targets onto the surface of nanocomposite-modified PWE assisted by the interaction with the CEA antibody from a specific recognition property, a signal-off PEC signal state with a remarkable photocurrent response decreasing trend can be achieved, realizing the quantitative detection of CEA with the PEC signal readout mode. By means of a smart origami paper folding, the colorimetric signal readout is achieved by catalyzing 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to generate blue oxidized TMB in the presence of H2O2due to the satisfied enzyme-like catalytic activity of the needle-like structure, FeOOH, thereby achieving the dual-mode signal readout system for the proposed lab-on-paper device. Under the optimal conditions, the PEC and colorimetric signals measurement were effectively carried out, and the corresponding linear ranges were 0.001–200 ng·mL−1and 0.5–100 ng·mL−1separately, with the limit of detection of 0.0008 and 0.013 ng·mL−1for each dual-mode. The prepared lab-on-paper device also presented a successful application in serum samples for the detection of CEA, providing a potential pathway for the sensitive detection of target biomarkers in clinical application.Keywords:PEC;colorimetric;lab-on-paper device;BiVO4/FeOOH;CEA

Microwave-assisted in situ synthesis of reduced graphene oxide-BiVO4 composite photocatalysts and their enhanced photocatalytic performance for the degradation of ciprofloxacin

Yan Yan,Shaofang Sun,Yang Song,Xu Yan,Weisheng Guan,Xinlin Liu,Weidong Shi

To improve the photodegradation efficiency for ciprofloxacin (CIP), a new-type microwave-assisted in situ growth method is developed for the preparation of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) -BiVO 4 composite photocatalysts. The as-produced RGO-BiVO 4 composite photocatalysts show extremely high enhancement of CIP degradation ratio over the pure BiVO 4 photocatalyst under visible light. Specially, the 2   wt% RGO-BiVO 4 composite photocatalyst exhibits the highest CIP degradation ratio (68.2%) in 60   min, which is over 3 times than that (22.7%) of the pure BiVO 4 particles. The enhancement of photocatalytic activities of RGO-BiVO 4 photocatalysts can be attributed to the effective separation of electron–hole pairs rather than the improvement of light absorption .

In situ synthesis of dual-functional photocatalyst xBi0/BiVO4 for the selective oxidation of cinnamaldehyde to benzaldehyde under visible light using oxygen

Jianghua Zhang,Zuzeng Qin,Xuan Luo,Tongming Su,Xinling Xie,Hongbing Ji

The demand for natural benzaldehyde in fragrances and pharmaceuticals exceeds its supply because of consumer habits and stringent regulations. Sustainable development necessitates using eco-friendly methods for synthesizing organic compounds. This study investigates the selective photocatalytic oxidation of cinnamaldehyde to benzaldehyde using oxygen. Dual-functional xBi0/BiVO4 photocatalysts were prepared in situ by tuning the Bi/V molar ratio. xBi0/BiVO4 retained the photosensitizer properties of BiVO4, while Bi deposition on BiVO4 enhanced the generation of photogenerated electrons and the adsorption capacity for oxygen and cinnamaldehyde. The catalysts rapidly converted adsorbed oxygen into singlet oxygen, which contributed to the selective oxidation of cinnamaldehyde, achieving a benzaldehyde selectivity of 47–59%. Photogenerated electrons facilitated the formation of superoxide radicals, improving benzaldehyde selectivity and counteracting deactivation for sustained xBi0/BiVO4 activity. In this study, we synthesized an efficient and durable photocatalyst for oxidizing CC bonds in α,β-unsaturated aldehydes, addressing limitations of existing photocatalytic processes.

Regulating free radical species towards selective photocatalytic acetic acid synthesis from polylactic acid plastic over sulfur-doped BiVO4/In2S3 S-scheme heterojunction

Yongqian Cui,Xinxin Liang,Qibing Dong,Ximing Li,Yuqing Chen,Jingyi Wang,Ewa Kowalska,Antonio Otavio T. Patrocinio,Chuanyi Wang

Photocatalytic conversion of polylactic acid (PLA) plastic waste into value-added chemicals offers a promising approach for sustainable development. However, achieving high selectivity toward a desired product in the conversion remains challenging due to uncontrolled formation of oxygenated intermediates. Herein, we demonstrate a highly selective strategy for converting lactic acid (LA) derived from PLA hydrolysis into acetic acid, which is achieved by precisely regulating radical generation using a sulfur-doped BiVO 4 /In 2 S 3 (S-BiVO 4 /In 2 S 3 ) S-scheme heterojunction. DFT theoretical calculations and in-situ electron paramagnetic resonance results reveal that sulfur doping reduces the formation energy of V 4+ from V 5+ in BiVO 4 , facilitating electron transfer and O 2 dissociation. This promotes •OH radical generation via a proton-coupled electron transfer process by supplying protons to lower the •OH formation barrier. Consequently, •COCH 3 intermediates selectively interact with •OH radicals to form acetic acid. The optimized S-BiVO 4 /In 2 S 3 catalyst achieves an acetic acid generation rate of 3.97 mmol g −1 h −1 with an apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 1.42 % at 360 nm. Moreover, the acetic acid selectivity at S-BiVO 4 /In 2 S 3 reaches 84.3 %, which is significantly higher than that of its counterpart, pristine BiVO 4 (27.3 %). The present work opens a new avenue for designing efficient photocatalysts to selectively convert waste plastics into value-added products.
