Superhydrophobic sponge-like chitosan/CNTs/silica composite for selective oil absorption and efficient separation of water-in-oil emulsion

Chu Xu,Huaqiang He,Yuan Wang,Yaoqi Huang,Tian C. Zhang,Shaojun Yuan

Developing state-of-the-art materials with durability, superhydrophobicity, and superoleophilicity is essential for effective cleanup of oil spills and the treatment of oily wastewater. In this study, a novel superhydrophobic/superoleophilic chitosan-based composite was created by incorporating carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into a chitosan (CS) matrix and depositing superhydrophobic SiO 2 nanoparticles, forming a sponge-like absorbent (SH-SiO 2 @3CNTs/CS) for selective oil absorption and efficient oil/water separation. The optimal CNTs incorporation was comprehensively investigated to enhance the structural stability and mechanical strength of the chitosan/CNTs/silica composite. The size and loading of in-situ-grown SiO 2 nanoparticles on the chitosan/CNTs composite surface were identified as crucial factors in achieving surface superhydrophobicity. The optimized SH-SiO 2 @3CNTs/CS, with its three-dimensional porous structure, exhibited not only superhydrophobicity and superoleophilicity, but also high chemical stability, excellent resistance to high temperature and friction. Notably, the SH-SiO 2 @3CNTs/CS composite effectively absorbed oil with a capacity of up to 18.24 times its own weight and selectively separated oil/water mixtures and water-in-oil emulsions, achieving a separation efficiency of exceeding 97 % under vacuum pump conditions. This study not only introduces a novel approach for developing superoleophilic chitosan-based sponge-like composite materials, but also presents a promising strategy for selective oil absorption and efficient separation of water-in-oil emulsions.

Multi-layered gradient-structured TPU/CNTs aerogel with ultra-wide pressure detection capabilities for machine learning–assisted fruit recognition

Zhang Minyue,Liu Si,Liu Shun,Jia Gaoen,Zhan Pengfei,Liu Chuntai,Shen Changyu,Liu Hu

In recent years, as wearable electronics continue to advance toward flexible, lightweight, and versatile designs, flexible pressure sensors with wide response ranges and high sensitivity have shown tremendous research value and application potential. In this study, we fabricated TPU-based flexible pressure sensors with a multistage gradient porous structure using layer-by-layer freezing and solvent templating techniques. Due to the layered differences in Young’s modulus from varying porosities, these sensors exhibit high pressure sensitivity ( S , S MAX  = 34.08 MPa −1 ) and can accurately distinguish stresses across a wide range (0–1.2 MPa). Additionally, they demonstrate rapid response and recovery times (140 ms), durability over 3000 compression cycles, and the ability to detect both subtle movements (facial expressions and swallowing) and larger actions (joint bends, walking, and running). Furthermore, we developed a smart glove using these gradient-structured pressure sensors combined with a K-nearest neighbor (KNN) algorithm, enabling accurate identification of various fruit types. Notably, the TPU sensors also exhibit excellent thermal insulation and Joule heating properties, making them effective for human thermal management even in extreme temperatures.

N-doped CNTs/CoNi nanochains-carbon hollow microspheres multi-level multi-scale heterogeneous interface structures and microwave absorption properties

Yanzhi Cai,Yalong Chai,Laifei Cheng,Siyu Guo,Yibing Yuan,Xue Huang,Zixuan Yu,Mingxing Chen,Shaoxiong Ren,Hudie Yuan

Constructing multi-level multi-scale heterogeneous interfaces in magnetic carbon-based composites remains a formidable challenge, requiring rational material combinations to effectively balance dielectric and magnetic losses for achieving high strength and wide frequency wave absorption. Electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbing materials consisted of cobalt-nickel (CoNi) magnetic nanochain, nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (NCNTs) and hollow carbon microspheres were prepared by hydrothermal method without external magnetic field . These composites possessed a unique multi-level multi-scale heterogeneous interface structure that is highly advantageous for efficient absorption of EMWs. The CoNi nanoparticles were self-assembled into uniformly distributed and randomly oriented magnetic nanochains, which were further reassembled with NCNTs and hollow carbon microspheres to form heterogeneous interface structures resembling a rose, chrysanthemum, hedgehog ball, and bauhinia tree. Due to the high-density interface enhancing the loss ability of interface polarization, as well as the higher saturation magnetization , coercivity , and wave absorption ability of the magnetic nanochains compared to the magnetic nanoparticles themselves, the minimum reflection loss achieved is −66.86 dB, and the effective absorption bandwidth achieved is 5.01 GHz, at a content as low as 11 wt%. This study provides a new idea for generating nanochains without magnetic fields and constructing multi-level and multi-scale heterogeneous interface structures to achieve strong absorption and wide effective absorption bandwidth (EAB).

Preparation of superhydrophobic photothermal coatings via sequentially grown mesoporous silica-coated CNTs for anti-icing applications on cement concrete

Shuai Li,Xinye Liu,Chao Xing,Yiqiu Tan,Andong Xiao,Yunhao Wei,Chong Li,Mingxin Dai

Delaying ice formation and reducing ice adhesion on concrete surfaces have broad application prospects in civil engineering. Superhydrophobic coatings can effectively delay freezing, which, however, are very likely to fail after multiple freeze-thaw cycles. This study proposed a simple method for preparing superhydrophobic photothermal coatings using carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Combining stencil and sol-gel methods, superhydrophobic mesoporous silica-coated CNTs (SMC) were fabricated by growing and modifying mesoporous silica on CNTs. The SMC particles were then mixed with epoxy resin and sprayed onto cement concrete surfaces. The optimal EP/C ratio of 1:4 yielded a coating with a contact angle of 158.5°, which exhibited excellent mechanical durability and stability. The coating exhibited dual functionality by significantly prolonging ice condensation time and enabling effective photothermal-induced melting of frozen droplets. Furthermore, the coating demonstrated exceptional performance in ice removal applications, substantially reducing the force required to detach ice formations from treated surfaces. Additionally, the EP/C-4 coating formed a protective layer on the surface of the concrete, reducing water absorption and improving the resistance to freeze-thaw cycles.

The structure and catalytic performance for oxygen reduction reaction of worm-like CNTs with Fe3P and Fe0.8Mn0.2 alloy encapsulated

Xuanhao Zhang,Shanshan Wang,Zhanyu Ding,Haizhou Zhang,Xiaochun Ma,Xiaoming Zhou,Yu Ma,Yanlu Mu,Jiemei Yu,Taizhong Huang

Developing transition metal-based catalysts is a feasible approach to decrease the cost of fuel cells. In this paper, we synthesized a worm-like carbon nanotubes (CNTs) encapsulated Fe 3 P and Fe 0.8 Mn 0.2 alloy based catalysts (FP/FM@CNTs) for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) by calcination method. The precursor for the calcination was prepared by hydrothermal method. The CNTs encapsulation structure was confirmed by SEM, HRTEM, XRD, XPS and EDS tests. The electrocatalytic performances for ORR of the catalyst were examined in 0.1 M KOH electrolyte by using CV, LSV, Tafel, EIS, RDE and RRDE tests. The obtained results presented that the half-wave potential(E 1/2 ) of FP/FM@CNTs catalyzed ORR was 0.892 V (vs. RHE), the maximum current intensity and the Tafel slope of FP/FM@CNTs catalyzed ORR were superior to that of the Pt/C catalyst. The density function theory calculation ascertained that the encapsulated Fe 3 P made the carbon atoms in surface layer CNT in negative electron state that could transfer electrons easily to oxygen molecular and promote the ORR happening. On the other hand, the CNTs encapsulation structure protected the Fe 0.8 Mn 0.2 alloy and Fe 3 P from the directly contact with electrolyte and other reactants, which assured the long-term operational stability of the catalysts. The content of this paper presents a novel approach for designing high-performance catalysts.

An enzyme-free flexible and wearable sensor based on PEDOT/CNTs/Au for continuous detection of glucose in sweat

Chong Chen,Yufei Liu,Kai Zhang,Qiao Fan,Tingting Luo,Shigui Peng,Lanlan Wei,Yucheng Yin,Min He,Jie Yu

Non-enzymatic electrochemical glucose sensors based on human sweat offer a new detection method that is non-invasive and suitable for continuous monitoring. They overcome limitations of traditional enzyme-based sensors, such as poor stability and strict storage requirements. This study developed a flexible electrochemical sensor using a composite of conductive polymer (P(EDOT-MeOH)), carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (COOH-MWCNTs), and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) for highly sensitive and selective detection of glucose in sweat. COOH-MWCNTs provide a conductive network with high specific surface area. AuNPs enhance the electrocatalytic oxidation of glucose. The P(EDOT-MeOH) matrix improves the stability of the nanocomposite and effectively suppresses interference from electroactive substances such as uric acid and ascorbic acid in sweat. The sensor was fabricated using an electrodeposition process to layer the composite material onto a flexible screen-printed carbon electrode. This design offers both mechanical durability and wearability. Electrochemical tests showed that the sensor has a wide linear detection range (0.01–1 mM), a low detection limit (4.5 μM), and high selectivity under neutral conditions. The sensor maintained stable performance over 30 days and after 400 bending cycles, demonstrating its potential for wearable applications. During real-time sweat glucose monitoring in exercise conditions, results showed a strong correlation with blood glucose levels (R² = 0.976), confirming clinical applicability. This study provides a new strategy for developing low-cost, highly stable flexible non-enzymatic glucose sensors and supports the advancement of a new generation of wearable health monitoring devices.

CoNi-MOF derived S-CN/NC/CNTs with tailored 3d network and active dispersion for quasi-solid-state supercapacitors

Zhiru Yang,Zi Yang,Wentao Hou,Hai Zhou,Hao He,Chao Jin

Three-dimensional S-CN/NC/CNTs network composites were synthesized via a combined hydrothermal and high-temperature treatment strategy. And their electrochemical behavior as supercapacitor electrodes was investigated. Compared with conventional synthesis routes, this method provides distinct advantages. Cobalt and nickel nanoparticles catalyze the directional growth of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) from melamine, forming a uniform coating structure that significantly enhances the electrical conductivity of the electrode. Concurrently, the sulfidation of cobalt and nickel nanoparticles dispersed within the nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) matrix and CNT network generates abundant redox-active sites, thereby improving the specific capacitance. Within this composite, Co-Ni-S functions as the electrochemically active phase, NC serves as the structural scaffold, and CNTs form an interconnected three-dimensional conductive framework that facilitates efficient electron transport. The synergistic interaction among these components endows the material with superior electrochemical performance. The optimized composite exhibits a high specific capacitance of 2104 F g⁻¹ at 0.5 A g⁻¹ in 6 M KOH electrolyte. Furthermore, a flexible quasi-solid-state supercapacitor assembled using this material as the positive electrode, activated carbon as the negative electrode, and a gel polymer electrolyte achieves an energy density of 40.3 Wh kg⁻¹ at a power density of 750 W kg⁻¹ , maintaining 87.6 % capacitance retention after 5000 cycles at 10 A g⁻¹ with excellent mechanical flexibility. This study presents an effective route for enhancing the electrochemical performance of three-dimensional composite electrodes through hierarchical conductive network design and controlled active-site dispersion, offering valuable insights for the development of high-performance energy storage materials.

Study on the synthesis and electrochemical performance of nitrogen-doped double carbon-coated Na4VMn1-xCrx(PO4)3/NC@CNTs

Xu Cheng,Liu Ke,Lu Yong,Xu Qi

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), as an emerging energy storage technology, have been recognized as one of the most promising alternatives to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Among various cathode materials, the NASICON-type Na 4 VMn(PO 4 ) 3 (NVMP) composite material has garnered considerable attention owing to its distinctive 3D framework structure, high redox potential, stable crystal structure, and rapid Na + diffusion rate. Nevertheless, the practical application of NVMP cathodes is constrained by several inherent limitations, including inherently low electronic conductivity, Mn 3+ Jahn–Teller distortion, and structural degradation mechanisms, which collectively contribute to compromised rate capability and limited cycling durability. To tackle this challenge, an N-doped dual nano-carbon coating was applied to the NVMP material to enhance the conductivity of the composite. Building upon this foundation, a series of Na 4 VMn 1- x Cr x (PO 4 ) 3 /NC@CNTs cathode materials (where x  = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1) were successfully prepared using the sol–gel method, enabling targeted regulation of Mn/Cr ratios for enhanced electrochemical performance. The N-doped dual nano-carbon coating is capable of forming carbon layer defects and active sites, as well as constructing a 3D conductive network structure, which can enhance the diffusion rate of Na + ions and shorten their transport path. The results indicate that the Na 4 VMn 0.5 Cr 0.5 (PO 4 ) 3 /NC@CNTs cathode material demonstrates the highest discharge capacity, achieving 132.1 mAh·g −1 when x  = 0.5. Notably, the capacity decreases rapidly at high rates, potentially attributed to the collapse of the crystal structure and excessive polarization, resulting in a deterioration of the material’s electrochemical performance. The optimized Na 4 VCr(PO 4 ) 3 /NC@CNTs (when x  = 1) demonstrates exceptional rate performance with 91.2% capacity retention at 1C, accompanied by significantly reduced charge transfer resistance (Rct = 331.9 Ω). This study establishes a design paradigm for NASICON-type cathode materials through dual-transition metal synergistic doping and demonstrates the efficacy of Cr/Mn co-substitution in balancing ionic/electronic conductivity for next-generation high-power sodium-ion batteries.

Synergistic engineering of porous P-doped CuS/CNTs composite as high-performance conversion anode for aqueous zinc-ion batteries

Chuanjin Lin,Guoquan Suo,Jiarong Li,Rongrong Mu,Laraib Habib,Xiaojiang Hou,Xiaohui Ye,Yanling Yang

The development of high-performance anode materials remains a critical challenge for advancing aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs). While conversion-type CuS anodes demonstrate superior capacity through multi-electron redox reactions, they are hindered by sluggish Zn 2+ kinetics and structural degradation. Herein, we propose a porous P-doped CuS/carbon nanotube composite (P-CuS/CNTs) engineered through a one-step hydrothermal strategy to address these limitations. The dual-functional design combines atomic-scale phosphorus doping with three-dimensional CNTs scaffolding, creating synergistic effects including: facilitating partial Zn 2+ desolvation via P C bond formation; establishing rapid ion/electron transport pathways and buffering volume changes through mechanical reinforcement of CNTs. The optimized P-CuS/CNTs anode delivers exceptional electrochemical performance, achieving a high specific capacity of 258 mAh g −1 at 1 A g −1 and retaining 128 mAh g −1 after 1000 cycles at 10 A g −1 with 98.2 % capacity retention. When paired with MnO 2 @CNTs cathodes, the full cell maintains 74 mAh g −1 after 170 cycles. This work provides fundamental insights into the desolvation-enhanced conversion mechanism while demonstrating a viable material design strategy for stable Zn-ion storage systems.

Synergistically enhanced NF/CNTs@ PDA/PEG composite phase change materials for high-efficiency solar-thermal energy storage and conversion

Youchong Hu,Yaoqi Huang,Xiaopeng Liu,Meng Fu,Shuai Luo,Yuanyuan Li,Xiaomin Cheng

In order to solve the low thermal conductivity and leakage challenges of phase change materials (PCMs), a high-performance composite phase change material (CPCM) by integrating nickel foam (NF), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and polydopamine (PDA) is developed. A three-dimensional (3D) porous NF/CNTs@PDA framework was constructed through oxidative self-polymerization of PDA on NF surfaces, followed by ultrasonic-assisted CNTs impregnation. CNTs-NF interfacial bonding was strengthened and interfacial thermal resistance was reduced by the PDA coating, as demonstrated in experimental results, leading to enhanced thermal conductivity. Light absorption and heat conduction were further optimized by CNTs. The optimized CPNF-9/PEG composite exhibited a thermal conductivity of 0.899 W m −1  K −1 , representing an 565.93 % enhancement over pure PEG (0.135 W m −1  K −1 ). The melting and crystallization enthalpies of the material were 121.13 J g −1 and 113.44 J g −1 respectively, and solar-thermal tests indicated a 95.37 % conversion efficiency. After 200 thermal cycles, the composite maintained stable phase change latent heat (loss rate <3 %) and structural integrity, indicating excellent cyclic durability. Furthermore, leakage resistance tests at 80 °C revealed minimal mass loss (2 % over 100 min), highlighting its suitability for high-temperature applications. The work provides a novel strategy for designing efficient solar-thermal energy storage systems, with potential applications in solar-thermal management and renewable energy conversion technologies.

Unlocking Mg2+ storage in imine-functionalized CNTs@COF hybrids: role of in situ coatings in enhancing magnesium battery performance

Xiangming Wang,Yang Zhao,Han Qin,Feng Yan,Tao An,Weimin Liu,Yu Su,Xianbo Yu

Magnesium batteries exhibit promising prospects owing to their high theoretical volumetric capacity, abundant natural reserves, and superior safety. However, their practical applications are hindered by the sluggish diffusion kinetics of Mg2+ in conventional cathode materials. This study innovatively proposes a strategy for the epitaxial growth of imine-linked covalent organic frameworks on the surface of carbon nanotubes (CNTs@COF), thereby effectively balancing electrode conductivity and the density of active sites through precise control of the COF layer thickness. This composite material not only facilitates the efficient diffusion of Mg2+ via axially aligned COF channels and continuous charge transport networks but also enhances electrical conductivity through the incorporation of CNTs, significantly improving the energy storage performance, cycling stability, and utilization efficiency of active sites in magnesium batteries. Furthermore, the Mg2+ storage mechanism in CNTs@COF is hypothesized to involve the storage of six electrons per CN bond within each COF unit. As a result, CNTs@COF exhibits superior discharge capacity, rate capabilities, and cycling performance (e.g., 191.7 mAh g−1 at 20 mA g−1 after 200 cycles and 107.6 mAh g−1 at 500 mA g−1 after 3000 cycles). The synthetic approach paves the way for constructing high-performance multivalent battery systems, bridging the gap from molecular design to macroscopic electrochemical performance.

Selective Liquid-Phase Oxidation of Toluene with Molecular Oxygen Catalyzed by Mn3O4 Nanoparticles Immobilized on CNTs under Solvent-Free Conditions

Yuwei Feng,Aiwu Zeng

The catalytic performance of Mn3O4supported on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in the liquid-phase oxidation of toluene to benzyl alcohol and benzaldehyde was studied. The supported catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), N2adsorption–desorption isotherms and ICP-MS. The results demonstrate that Mn3O4nanoparticles loaded on CNTs performed better compared with pristine Mn3O4or CNTs. The main reason for the increased catalytic activity is the dispersion and loading of Mn3O4in CNTs. By optimizing the reaction temperature, reaction time, catalyst quality, oxygen flow rate and initiator dosage, the optimum reaction conditions were obtained. Using tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) as the initiator and oxygen as the oxidant, the toluene conversion rate was as high as 24.63%, and benzyl alcohol and benzaldehyde selectivity was 90.49%. The good stability of the catalyst was confirmed by repeating the experiment for four cycles and observing no significant changes in its performance.
