Visible-light photocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen evolution has attracted tremendous attention in past decades, but it still suffers from low solar-hydrogen conversion efficiency. In this paper, two-dimensional (2D) CdS was synthesized by the hydrothermal method , and 2D CoP nanosheets were synthesized by successive hydrothermal, oxidation and phosphodation process. Then 2D-2D CdS–CoP photocatalysts were formed by ultrasonically dispersing the mixed solution of CdS and CoP, and their heterostructure was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy , X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, fluorescence spectrometer and so on. CdS–CoP with 2% CoP loading amounts exhibits a maximum photocatalytic performance of 56.3 mmolg −1 h −1 under visible light irradiation , which is 11.3 times as high as bare CdS. The enhanced photocatalytic performance of CdS–CoP should be due to the following two points: (1) high catalytic activity of CoP; (2) highly efficient separation and transfer of electron-hole pairs photogenerated in CdS due to the synthesized 2D-2D heterostructure.

In the photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting for the hydrogen production, the fabrication of a stable and efficient photocatalyst semiconductor remains a challenge. CdS, which is one of most used chalcogenide materials, coupled with metal oxide semiconductor exhibit a generally low durability. TiO 2 nanorods arrays (TNR) sensitized with CdS were synthesized via hydrothermal method and denoted as TNR-CdS. CdS deposition on TNR surface was controlled by regulating the hydrothermal reaction time. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy , scanning electronmicroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and UV-visible absorption. A high PEC performance as well as a great CdS sensitized TNR photoanodes stability were exhibited. These results could be due to the intimate contact between CdS and TNR, favoring a fast separation of photogenerated charge carriers. The optimal PEC performance was achieved when CdS was deposited on TNR for 10 h. Under AM 1.5G illumination at applied potential of 0 V vs Ag/AgCl, TNR-CdS (10 h) is found to have a photocurrent density of 6.5 mA/cm 2 against 2.25 mA/cm 2 for TNR. Additionally, TNR-CdS (10 h) presented a photoconversion efficiency of 2.5% at −0.4 V vs Ag/AgCl, while that of TNR was 0.9% at-0.35 V vs Ag/AgCl. TNR-CdS showed great stability with and without sacrificial reagent. These results were confirmed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements, where the rapid transfer/transport and separation of photogenerated charge carriers were highlighted.

CdS/CuInS 2 /Au/TiO 2 nanotube arrays (NTAs) were fabricated by deposition and dipping technique as well as successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction method, where Au nanoparticles were used to improve the interfacial electron transfer and quantum dots (QDs) of CdS and CuInS 2 (4.1 nm) to stimulate the formation of an ideal stepwise band edge structure with TiO 2 . High and stable photocurrent responses were observed on the NTA electrode. A photoelectrochemical aptasensor toward cytochrome c (cyt c) was then fabricated by immobilization of HS-aptamer on the NTAs via Cd-S bond and Cu-S bond. Sensitive and selective detection of cyt c was achieved with a detection range of 5 pM to 100 nM.

Two-phase synthesis is an advantageous alternative to the traditional synthetic method, due to its less toxicity, controllable, mild synthetic conditions and easy large-scale synthesis. However, meeting novel synthesis, the conventional trial-and-error approach could not provide a clear understanding. We herein report synthesis and mechanism investigation of CdS quantum dots in octadecene/glycerol two-phase system. The effects of different reaction parameters and conditions including reaction temperature, reaction time, reactant concentrations, and synthesis routes (one-step and two-step approach) on both nucleation and particle growth were investigated. It was found that the synthesis course was a growth dominated process depending on both CdS(monomer) and CdS(nuclei), and controlled by the interface of ODE/glycerol. The present work provided a new and clear understanding about two-phase system synthesis on semiconductor quantum dots, noble metal nanocrystals and some alloy nanomaterials .

A novel photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptasensor based on cerium (Ce) doped CdS modified graphene (G)/BiYWO 6 was designed, which exhibits enhanced PEC intensity compared with pure BiYWO 6 , G/BiYWO 3 and BiYWO 6 /Ce:CdS. In this scenario, ascorbic acid (AA) was exploited as an efficient and non-poisonous electron donor for scavenging photogenerated holes. The doping of Ce in CdS promoted its visible light absorption range and facilitated the charge transfer rate as well as hindered the h + /e - recombination. Moreover, the combination of G further promoted the electron carrier separation and transfer process due to its excellent electron collection and shuttling characteristic. Thus, the G/BiYWO 6 /Ce:CdS heterostructure was successfully served as a matrix for the PEC detection of tetracycline (Tc) at 0 V (vs Hg/Hg 2 Cl 2 ). Under optimal conditions, the PEC aptasensor could offer a sensitive and specific detection limit (3 S/N) of Tc down to 0.01 ng/mL, as well as acceptable reproducibility, selectivity and storage stability, which opened up a promising pathway for the development of PEC biosensors.

Graphical Synergy in action . A novel polyoxometalate-decorated g-C 3 N 4 -wrapping snowflake-like CdS nanocrystal photocatalyst, by virtue of the synergistic effect stemming from the integration of the individual advantages of CdS, g-C 3 N 4 , polypyrrole, and the polyoxometalate Ni 4 (PW 9 ) 2 , displays high-performance hydrogen production activity and superior photocatalytic stability (see figure). Photocatalytic hydrogen evolution technology is recognized as a promising approach to relieving the growing energy crisis. Therefore, the development of a stable high-performance photocatalyst has long been the focus of research. In this work, quaternary composite materials involving a snowflake-like CdS nanocrystal wrapped by different amounts of polyoxometalate-decorated g-C 3 N 4 and polypyrrole (GPP@CdS) have been synthesized as photocatalysts for hydrogen production under visible-light irradiation. It has been revealed that the best composite (40 % GPP@CdS composite) exhibits hydrogen production activity of 1321 μmol, which exceeds that of CdS by a factor of more than two, and can be used in at least seven cycles with negligible loss of activity. The enhanced photocatalytic performance has been primarily attributed to the efficient synergy of CdS, g-C 3 N 4 , polypyrrole (PPy), and the polyoxometalate Ni 4 (PW 9 ) 2 . It should be noted that the introduction of PPy and g-C 3 N 4 into the title composite simultaneously promotes electron/hole pair separation and photocatalytic stability, whereas Ni 4 (PW 9 ) 2 serves as an efficient electron modulator and extra catalytic active site.

While rotational dynamics of anisotropic nanoobjects has often been limited in plasmonic and fluorescent nanomaterials, here we demonstrate the capability of a surface plasmon resonance microscopy (SPRM) to determine the orientation of all kinds of anisotropic nanomaterials. By taking CdS nanorods as an example, it was found that two-dimensional Fourier transform of the asymmetrical wave-like SPRM image resulted in a peak in its angular spectrum in k space. Consistency between the peak angle and the geometrical orientation of the nanorod was validated by both in situ scanning electron microscope characterizations and theoretical calculations. Real-time monitoring of the rotational dynamics of single CdS nanorods further revealed the accelerated rotation under appropriate reaction conditions for photocatalyzed hydrogen generation. The driving force was attributed to the asymmetric production of hydrogen molecules as a result of inhomogeneous distribution of reactive sites within the nanorod. The present work not only builds the experimental and theoretical connections between the orientation of anisotropic nanomaterials and its SPRM images; the general suitability of SPRM also sheds light on broad types of nonfluorescent and nonplasmonic anisotropic nanoobjects from semiconductors to bacteria and viruses.

-sensitized layers in photoelectrodes using a spin-assisted successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction method (spin-SILAR). Following careful adjustment of the molar ratio of Se 2− to S 2− , the number of spin-SILAR cycles, and the thickness of the CdS passivation layer used, the best-performing QDSC was shown to yield a short-circuit current density of 18.22 mA cm −2 , an open-circuit voltage of 0.520 V, a fill factor of 0.510, and a power conversion efficiency of 4.83%. This high performance is possible because the device is able to absorb a relatively broad range of wavelengths and because charge recombination is suppressed in the device.

The pathogenic bacteria induced foodborne disease has been detrimental to public health worldwide. Herein, the peroxidase (POD)-like Fe 3 O 4 /MWCNTs@Mo-CDs (FMMC) nanozyme was applied for the detection of Escherichia coli ( E. coli ). The E. coli aptamer was conjugated with the surface of the FMMC, which effectively enhanced the POD-like activity attributing to the higher affinity to the substrate, and then specific capture of E. coli in food matrices, leading to the reduction of POD-like activity. Therefore, a robust and facile colorimetric aptasensor was developed for detecting E. coli with a wide linear range of 10 1 –10 6 CFU/mL, low LOQ of 10 1 CFU/mL and LOD of 0.978 CFU/mL. The aptasensor demonstrated the satisfied selectivity for E. coli compared to the other strains. This method possessed the potential application for fast in situ screening of foodborne pathogens in food products.

ZnWO 4 -CdS heterostructure photocatalysts have been successfully synthesized by hydrothermal method with assembling CdS on the surface of ZnWO 4 . The obtained composite photocatalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, Raman, thermo-gravimetric analysis, UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, photoluminescence and photocurrent measurement. The results show that the interface between ZnWO 4 and CdS is well formed, and the CdS nanoparticles are uniformly distributed onto ZnWO 4 nanorods which could facilitate charge transfer and reduce recombination of photo-generated electrons and holes. Compared with pure ZnWO 4 and CdS, the as-prepared heterostructure photocatalysts exhibit excellent photostability and photodegradation ability of ciprofloxacin (CIP) under visible light irradiation.

CdSe/CdS quantum dots (QDs) functionalized by thiourea (TU) were synthesized and used as a fluorescent sensor for mercury ion detection. The TU-functionalized QDs were prepared by bonding TU via electrostatic interaction to the core/shell CdSe/CdS QDs after capping with thioglycolic acid (TGA). It was observed that the fluorescence of the functionalized QDs was quenched upon the addition of Hg 2+ . The quantitative detection of Hg 2+ with this fluorescent sensor could be conducted based on the linear relationship between the extent of quenching and the concentration of Hg 2+ added in the range of 1–300 μg L −1 . A detection limit of 0.56 μg L −1 was achieved. The sensor showed superior selectivity for Hg 2+ and was successfully applied to the determination of mercury in environmental samples with satisfactory results.

Photocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide can convert chemically inert carbon dioxide into useful chemical fuel in a mild manner. Herein, Ag-CdS nanocomposites were prepared by photodeposition method and examined for photocatalytic CO 2 reduction under visible light. Meanwhile, the nanocomposites were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS, DRS and PL in detail. The results show that, the deposition of Ag improves the photocatalytic performance of CdS, especially in the selectivity of CO 2 -to-CO. The highest photocatalytic activity is achieved over 1.0 wt.% Ag/CdS, with an increase by 3 times in comparison to CdS. In this reaction system, Ag can serve as electron trap as well as active site for CO 2 reduction, which is probably responsible for the enhanced activity and selectivity of CO 2 to CO over Ag/CdS. The possible mechanism of CO 2 photoreduction over Ag/CdS was proposed in view of the abovementioned analysis.
