In photocatalysis, the nature of reactive oxygen species plays a pivotal role in determining product selectivity. Yet, selective generation of singlet oxygen (1O2) is particularly desirable for achieving targeted photooxidations. Herein, two new nanosized titanium-oxide clusters (TOCs) doped with Ce, Ti14Ce2 and Ti4Ce2, were synthesized and explored in the selective photocatalytic oxidation of benzyl alcohols to benzaldehydes under mild conditions. Interestingly, the titanium-oxide core of Ti14Ce2 is recognized as a fragment of anatase TiO2, positioning Ti14Ce2 as a molecular model for Ce-doped TiO2 nanoparticles. Ce-doping effectively reduces the bandgap energy of the clusters, enabling visible-light absorption and enhancing their photocatalytic properties. Moreover, it promotes efficient energy transfer to O2 for 1O2 generation by increasing spin–orbit coupling. Both clusters exhibited high activity and selectivity in the oxidation of benzyl alcohols to benzaldehydes under visible-light irradiation. Our findings not only expand the TOC family with novel Ce-doped members but also offer insights into designing photocatalysts at the atomic level to enhance 1O2 generation for selective photo-oxidations.

It is important to design and develop catalysts with good water resistance to cope with the toxicity of water vapor on catalyst activity. In this study, we proposed a simple method to improve the water resistance of catalysts for toluene catalytic combustion by preparing a series of Co-Ce composite oxide catalysts via a citrate sol–gel method. Experimental results showed that Co 6 Ce 1 O x exhibited the best catalytic activity (T 50 = 236 ℃; T 90 = 251 ℃) and water resistance among all the catalysts. The crystal structure and surface chemistry of the catalysts were analyzed using a series of correlation characterizations, and the adsorption energies of toluene and water on the catalysts were calculated using density functional theory (DFT). The results showed that the doping of Ce in Co 3 O 4 had not only effectively changed the oxygen distribution state of Co 3 O 4 and increased its oxygen vacancy content, thus greatly enhancing the oxidizing ability of the catalyst, but also suppressed the adsorption of H 2 O on the surface of the catalyst, and significantly enhanced the water resistance of the catalyst. The present work provided a new idea and method for developing efficient and excellent water resistant catalysts for the catalytic oxidation of toluene.

With appropriate cerium (Ce) doping, the layered lithium ion-sieve precursor Li 1.37 Ce 0.001 Mn 1.22 O 3 was synthesized using hydrothermal and solid-phase calcination, which exhibited Li/Mn ratio exceeding 1, indicating a high theoretical adsorption capacity. The incorporation of Ce further stabilized the spatial configuration of the layered ion-sieve and controlled the dissolution loss ratio of manganese (Mn) to approximately 0.55%. At 25 °C, with pH of 9 and initial lithium-containing solution concentration of 100 mg/L, the adsorption capacity can reach around 33 mg/g. Despite the presence of interfering ions, it maintained selective adsorption of lithium (Li). The lithium adsorption process by layered lithium ion-sieve adhered to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model, while the kinetics of adsorption conformed to pseudo-second-order kinetics. This adsorption process was characterized as spontaneous and endothermic, with higher temperatures and concentrations of lithium solutions facilitating both the adsorption process and capacity. It was found that in simulation analysis, compared to the cubic ion-sieve precursor, Li in the layered structure occupied more spatial points, resulting in a more compact stacking and increased bond energy. It alleviated the dissolution loss of Mn during the pickling process. The proximity of Ce resulted in a reduction of the charge on Mn and Li. An appropriate amount of Ce doping will enhance the valence state of Mn; however, excessive Ce doping led to the depletion of electrons from nearby Mn and Li. During pickling process, the Li surrounding Ce in the precursor were preferentially replaced by hydrogen (H) due to their lower charge.

Advanced oxygen carrier plays a pivotal role in various chemical looping processes, such as CO 2 splitting. However, oxygen carriers have been restricted by deactivation and inferior oxygen transferability at low temperatures. Herein, we design an Fe–O v –Ce–triggered phase-reversible CeO 2− x ·Fe·CaO ↔ CeO 2 ·Ca 2 Fe 2 O 5 oxygen carrier with strong electron-donating ability, which activates CO 2 at low temperatures and promotes oxygen transformation. Results reveal that the maximum CO 2 conversion and CO yield obtained with 50 mol% CeO 2− x ·Fe·CaO are, respectively, 426% and 53.6 times higher than those of Fe·CaO at 700°C. This unique multiphase material also retains exceptional redox durability, with no obvious deactivation after 100 splitting cycles. The addition of Ce promotes the formation of the Fe–O v –Ce structure, which acts as an activator, triggers CO 2 splitting, and lowers the energy barrier of C═O dissociation. The metallic Fe plays a role in consuming O 2− lattice transformed from Fe–O v –Ce, whereas CaO acts as a structure promoter that enables phase-reversible Fe 0 ↔ Fe 3+ looping.

The detection of biomolecules using MOF-based nanozymes is a widely adopted strategy due to their abundant active sites and inherent enzymatic properties. In this study, we have synthesized three types of cerium metal-organic frameworks (Ce-MOFs) with oxidase (OXD)-like activity using a facile one-pot solvothermal method, simply by adjusting the concentrations of the raw ingredients, for the monitoring of biomolecules. The synthesized Ce-MOFs exhibit strong stability, a higher specific surface area, and more active sites, attributed to their MOF structure. These Ce-MOFs, with their excellent OXD-like activity, demonstrate satisfactory analytical performance in the quantitative determination of glutathione (GSH), showing a linear relationship within the range of 4.7 to 32.5 μM and detection limits as low as 42.76 nM. Furthermore, this colorimetric biosensor was successfully applied to monitor the content of GSH in the gingival crevicular fluid of patients with periodontitis. This paper extends the application of Ce-MOFs in bioassays and provides new insights into the application of OXD-like nanozymes in bioassays.

To solve the soot elimination and optimize catalyst diesel particulate filter (CDPF) regeneration strategies, a series of Mn-Ce catalysts with different Mn/(Mn+Ce) molar ratios are successfully synthetized by hydrothermal method and the complete catalytic oxidation of diesel engine soot are investigated. Compare to CeO 2 and MnO 2 , the catalytic promotion on soot combustion of Mn-Ce catalysts is more excellent by thermogravimetric experiments due to their better ability to activate oxygen species, which is consistent with results in characterization analysis. Among as-prepared catalysts, MC-0.40 has the best catalytic activity with the lowest starting temperature ( T s ), peak temperature ( T p ) and largest comprehensive combustion index ( S ) both in O 2 /N 2 and NO/O 2 /N 2 atmosphere. Influence factors on catalytic performance are studied. Weight ratios of soot/MC-0.40 catalyst are suitable at the range of 1:9–1:13, which makes soot combustion more easily. Ashes in the reaction process show adverse effects due to their ability to increase ignition point by inhibit heat and oxygen transfer. Mn-Ce catalysts are more sensitive and show better catalytic activity in NO atmosphere because of generations of abundant adsorbed species and NO adsorption/desorption. The three consecutive cycles of MC-0.40 catalyst are performed to study the catalytic stability, and thermogravimetric curves show that the potential reusability of MC-0.40 catalyst can be relatively accepted in soot combustion.

High-entropy pyrochlore oxide (Y,Dy,Ce,Nd,La) 2 Sn 2 O 7 has been synthesized by the co-precipitation method. EDS and XPS analysis demonstrated the high-entropy structure in M 2 Sn 2 O 7 (M = Y, Dy, Ce, Nd, La) ultrafine powders, which is developed as the active material in lithium anode. The effects of different binders on the cycling performance and rate capability were discussed. Benefiting from the synergistic effects of high-entropy system and the strong intermolecular force provided by the sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) system, the optimized M 2 Sn 2 O 7 /CMC (M = Y, Dy, Ce, Nd, La) delivers a high initial discharge capacity of about 766 mAh g −1 and exhibits excellent cycle stability. A reversible capacity of 396 mAh g −1 and superior delivering retention of ~ 100% can be obtained at 100 mA g −1 after 100 cycles. Meanwhile, the capacity retention rate of 54.5% can still be reached after the cycling at various current densities from 0.05 to 1 A g −1 , demonstrating potential application prospect of the M 2 Sn 2 O 7 /CMC.

Nanostructure engineering significantly influences the
simulated
enzyme catalysis and activity of nanozymes. Herein, using urea and
cerium(III) nitrate as precursors, nonstoichiometric cerium oxide
species were in situ deposited simultaneously with the growth of polymeric
carbon nitride by a one-step thermal polycondensation method, resulting
in cerium oxide/polymeric carbon nitride composite nanozymes with
excellent oxidase activity. The nitrogen-rich coordination configuration
of carbon nitride stabilizes cerium oxide species, and the matrix
of the polymer plays a role in isolating species. These effects create
the features of high dispersion and high exposure of cerium oxide
active species. More importantly, the enriched ammonia atmosphere
with strong reducing effect produced during urea polycondensation
fundamentally affects the ratio of Ce(IV) and Ce(III) shuttle pairs
in cerium oxide, leading to the dominant existence of Ce(III). As
a result, an extremely rich surface oxygen species emerged in the
oxygen vacancies associated with Ce(III). This unique architecture
endows the composite nanozyme with a strong capacity to store reactive
oxygen species, thereby conferring it a distinctive oxidase-like activity.
The corresponding Michaelis–Menten kinetic constant is as low
as 0.12 mmol L –1 , while the maximum reaction rate
can reach 8.26 × 10 –8 mol L –1 s –1 . Based on this composite nanozymes, an ascorbic
acid colorimetric detection system was constructed, achieving a detection
limit as low as 102 nmol L –1 . This study highlights
the great potential of polymeric carbon nitride loaded with cerium-based
active species as composite nanozymes, offering the insights into
the structure–activity relationships of highly active cerium
oxide nanozymes.

Efficient monitoring and controlling the fluoride content is of paramount significance for human health owing to the double-edged sword characteristic. Herein, a novel dual-functional Ce/Fe bimetallic MOF-derived mesoporous carbon (Ce/Fe@C) is engineered through competitive coordination polymerization and calcination for the selective detection and adsorption of fluoride. Attributed to unique oxygen vacancies, Ce/Fe@C could productively capture fluoride by forming specific Ce/Fe–F and C–F bonds, affording a high adsorption capacity of 146.57 mg g −1 . Harnessing the fluoride complex-mediated blocking of active sites promotes the deterioration of peroxidase-mimicking activity of Ce/Fe@C, facilitating the sensitive colorimetric detection of fluoride with a limit detection of 0.245 μmol L −1 . Most importantly, facile magnetic separation of Ce/Fe@C not only simplifies the operation for fluoride treatment but also improves the detection accuracy via background interference elimination, as well as excellent reusability. As functional nanozyme and adsorbent, Ce/Fe@C is successfully utilized for the specific detection and scavenging of fluoride in various complicated samples. This work furnishes a reliable “two in one” platform for alleviating fluoride contaminant stress and highlights the tremendous prospects of versatile bimetallic MOF-derived carbons for food analysis and environmental remediation.

Dual-mode anti-counterfeiting materials with photochromic and dynamic luminescent properties can improve the security of anti-counterfeiting and encryption. This study aimed to synthesize CaAl 12 O 19 :Eu, Ce phosphors with photochromic and dynamic photoluminescent properties. With the extension of 254-nm UV radiation time, the surface of the CaAl 12 O 19 :Eu, Ce phosphors changed in color from white to brownish yellow and was bleached by heating at 520 °C for 5 min, exhibiting excellent fatigue resistance and thermal stability. After co-doping Eu and Ce in CaAl 12 O 19 , the photochromic performance significantly improved, with the ΔR value increasing by 2.6- and 1.8-fold that of the CaAl 12 O 19 :1.0%Eu and CaAl 12 O 19 :1.0%Ce samples, respectively. After 254-nm UV irradiation, the CaAl 12 O 19 :Eu, Ce samples showed time-dependent dynamic luminescence characteristics, changing in color from orange-red to magenta. The mechanisms responsible for the photochromic and dynamic luminescence properties were further investigated. Overall, owing to their photochromism and dynamic photoluminescence, the CaAl 12 O 19 :Eu, Ce/polydimethylsiloxane composites could be applied in advanced anti-counterfeiting and information encryption with higher security in both the bright and dark fields.

Ce-doped Co 3 O 4 nanowire arrays with interfacial RuO 2 were constructed on Ti mesh. • The optimized 5-Ru-CoCe/Ti shows 198 ± 15 mV at 10 mA cm −2 for acidic OER. • The self-supported electrode delivers stable operation for over 200 h in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 . • Ce doping and RuO 2 coupling tune the electronic structure and accelerate OER kinetics. Co-based catalysts have emerged as highly promising electrocatalysts for the acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, their elevated surface energies lead to instability and inefficacy, particularly at high current densities, impeding their utility in large-scale application. Herein, we report a self-supported electrode composed of interfacial RuO 2 -decorated Ce-doped Co 3 O 4 nanowire arrays on Ti mesh, fabricated through hydrothermal growth, annealing, and cyclic impregnation-calcination. The optimized 5-Ru-CoCe/Ti catalyst delivers an overpotential of only 198 ± 15 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , a Tafel slope of 103.2 mV dec −1 , and stable operation for over 200 h in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 . Experimental characterizations and density functional theory calculations reveal that Ce doping and RuO 2 /Co 3 O 4 interfacial coupling modulate the local electronic structure and promote interfacial electron redistribution. This electronic modulation enhances –OH adsorption and accelerates OER kinetics, thus lowering the energy barrier for the *O to *OOH conversion. These findings demonstrate that interfacial electronic structure engineering is an effective strategy for designing low-noble-metal electrocatalysts with high activity and durability for acidic water oxidation.
