Photochromism and dynamic photoluminescence in CaAl12O19:Eu, Ce phosphor for dual-mode anti-counterfeiting and encryption applications

Xiaoping Jiang,Yifan Shen,Yiren Wu,Jinpeng Ding,Zhiyu Qu,Pengde Han,Lixi Wang,Qitu Zhang

Dual-mode anti-counterfeiting materials with photochromic and dynamic luminescent properties can improve the security of anti-counterfeiting and encryption. This study aimed to synthesize CaAl 12 O 19 :Eu, Ce phosphors with photochromic and dynamic photoluminescent properties. With the extension of 254-nm UV radiation time, the surface of the CaAl 12 O 19 :Eu, Ce phosphors changed in color from white to brownish yellow and was bleached by heating at 520 °C for 5 min, exhibiting excellent fatigue resistance and thermal stability. After co-doping Eu and Ce in CaAl 12 O 19 , the photochromic performance significantly improved, with the ΔR value increasing by 2.6- and 1.8-fold that of the CaAl 12 O 19 :1.0%Eu and CaAl 12 O 19 :1.0%Ce sample‌s, respectively. After 254-nm UV irradiation, the CaAl 12 O 19 :Eu, Ce samples showed time-dependent dynamic luminescence characteristics, changing in color from orange-red to magenta. The mechanisms responsible for the photochromic and dynamic luminescence properties were further investigated. Overall, owing to their photochromism and dynamic photoluminescence, the CaAl 12 O 19 :Eu, Ce/polydimethylsiloxane composites could be applied in advanced anti-counterfeiting and information encryption with higher security in both the bright and dark fields.

Electronic structure modulation of Ce-doped Co3O4 nanowires by interfacial RuO2 species for durable acidic water oxidation

Xinyu Liu,Yimeng Wang,Jinqi Wu,Donggang Li,Mingyu Yao,Jindou Huang,Bowen Ren

Ce-doped Co 3 O 4 nanowire arrays with interfacial RuO 2 were constructed on Ti mesh. • The optimized 5-Ru-CoCe/Ti shows 198 ± 15 mV at 10 mA cm −2 for acidic OER. • The self-supported electrode delivers stable operation for over 200 h in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 . • Ce doping and RuO 2 coupling tune the electronic structure and accelerate OER kinetics. Co-based catalysts have emerged as highly promising electrocatalysts for the acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, their elevated surface energies lead to instability and inefficacy, particularly at high current densities, impeding their utility in large-scale application. Herein, we report a self-supported electrode composed of interfacial RuO 2 -decorated Ce-doped Co 3 O 4 nanowire arrays on Ti mesh, fabricated through hydrothermal growth, annealing, and cyclic impregnation-calcination. The optimized 5-Ru-CoCe/Ti catalyst delivers an overpotential of only 198 ± 15 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , a Tafel slope of 103.2 mV dec −1 , and stable operation for over 200 h in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 . Experimental characterizations and density functional theory calculations reveal that Ce doping and RuO 2 /Co 3 O 4 interfacial coupling modulate the local electronic structure and promote interfacial electron redistribution. This electronic modulation enhances –OH adsorption and accelerates OER kinetics, thus lowering the energy barrier for the *O to *OOH conversion. These findings demonstrate that interfacial electronic structure engineering is an effective strategy for designing low-noble-metal electrocatalysts with high activity and durability for acidic water oxidation. A new perspective on the significant enhancement mechanism of luminescence properties by the Ce ion valence states

Jiawen Li,Xu Wang,Chaoyong Deng,Min Zhang,Liang Yang

This paper reveals a two-step reduction method for obtaining NaSr 4 (BO 3 ) 3 (NSBO):Ce series phosphors with better performance. XPS analysis confirms that the two-step reduction method achieves a higher proportion of trivalent Ce ions (in Ce 3 + /Ce 4 + ) with 54.38%, resulting in better photoluminescence and thermoluminescence properties compared to the one-step reduction method (41.21% and 28.11%). The sample exhibits better thermal stability, with a thermal quenching activation energy of 0.19595 eV. Ce 3 + doping creates deeper traps, thus enhancing photoluminescence intensity and generating more and deeper traps, which may be attributed to oxygen vacancies ( V O ) and strontium vacancies ( V Sr ). The NSBO: 0.07Ce 3 + sample exhibits better thermal stability 52% at 473K, with a thermal quenching activation energy of 0.19595 eV. The sample displays a lower correlated color temperature ( CCT ) of 1778 K and a higher color purity ( CP ) of 98.64%. The concentration quenching ( CQ ) mechanism is dipole-quadrupole (

A Flexible Electrochemical Sensor Based on Fe/Ce Dual Single-Atom Nanozyme for Detection of Hydrogen Peroxide

Sifan Sun,Jiawei Li,Qianzuo Liu,Binqi He,Haoran Yang,Xinyue Xiang,Ying Hao,Xuehua Yan,Ting Zhang,Tie Li

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is an indispensable mediator in cellular signaling pathways, playing a multifaceted role in biological systems. The development of advanced catalysts derived from flexible sensors for the real-time monitoring of dynamic H2O2 in vivo remains an important research issue. Recently, dual single-atom catalyst-based nanozymes exhibit synergistically enhanced catalytic performance, displaying excellent potential for H2O2 detection. Nevertheless, rationally regulating the geometric structures and electron transfer between the two metals still pose significant challenges. Hence, in this study, an advanced Fe/Ce dual single-atom catalyst (Fe/Ce–C)-based nanozyme was constructed, which proposes a Ce single-atom doping strategy to alter the electronic structure of Fe single-atom sites, endowing it with a high adsorption energy for hydroxyl groups to reduce the energy barrier of H2O2 in the reaction. This Fe/Ce–C achieves a linear sensing behavior in the range of 0.5–10,000 μM with a response speed of 1.4 s, a detection limit of 0.223 μM, and a sensitivity of 213 μA/mM·cm2. Furthermore, the nanozyme-derived flexible electrochemical sensor was assembled for real-time monitoring of H2O2 concentration changes in the brains of living rats, exhibiting long-term detection capability and excellent in vivo biocompatibility. Such an Fe/Ce dual single-atom nanozyme-based electrochemical sensor can serve as a promising tool for monitoring diseases like Parkinson’s.

Analytical methods for plutonium speciation using CE-ICP-MS: Migration behavior, method validation, and uranium matrix effects

Shuang Qin,Di Wu,Chu-Ting Yang,Feng-Cheng Wu,Ning Wang

Accurately identifying plutonium (Pu) valence states is critical to the safety and efficiency of nuclear fuel reprocessing. In this study, an analytical method for Pu valence state speciation was developed based on capillary electrophoresis hyphenated to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (CE-ICP-MS), enabling effective separation and quantification of Pu(III), Pu(IV), and Pu(VI). Optimal separation conditions were established using surrogate elements with stable oxidation states and 2-hydroxyisobutyric acid (α-HIBA) as the background electrolyte (BGE). Under optimized conditions, the migration order of Pu valence states was determined as Pu(III) > Pu(VI) > Pu(IV), with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of migration time < 1.5%, indicating excellent analytical repeatability. The method was successfully applied to monitor the reduction of Pu(VI) by zero-valent iron (Fe 0 ), elucidating the valence state transformation kinetics (Pu(VI) → unstable Pu(IV) intermediate → Pu(III)). Notably, the method exhibited robust anti-interference capability in high uranium (U) matrices, maintaining baseline separation of Pu valence states even at a U/Pu ratio of 100. This study provides a novel, reliable approach for Pu speciation analysis in complex nuclear matrices, with significant implications for process control and Pu recovery in nuclear fuel reprocessing.

Efficient Ce–Ti/coal gangue catalysts via microwave synthesis for NH3-SCR: enhanced activity and mechanistic insights

Haozhou Wang,Ming Zhao,Fu Zhao,Weixiang Shang,Hongxia Li,Ran Zhao,Peiliang Guo,Jinxiao Bao

This study successfully synthesized a series of 15Ce–xTi/CG catalysts with different TiO2 loading levels by integrating hydrothermal synthesis, impregnation techniques, and subsequent microwave sintering. To comprehensively evaluate the catalytic activity, microstructure, surface properties, and reaction mechanisms of the catalysts, a range of advanced techniques was employed, including NH3-SCR testing, XRD, XPS, SEM, BET, NH3-TPD, H2-TPR, and in situ DRIFTs. The experimental findings revealed that the incorporation of TiO2 significantly enhanced both the structural integrity and functional performance of the catalysts. Specifically, TiO2 facilitated stronger interactions between Ce and Ti, increased the Ce3+/(Ce3+ + Ce4+) ratio, enriched the surface acidic sites, and boosted the concentration of chemically adsorbed oxygen species. Among all the catalysts, 15Ce–6Ti/CG demonstrated superior NO conversion efficiency (exceeding 92% at 300 °C) and maintained high activity across an extensive temperature range of 250–400 °C, while exhibiting remarkable resistance to SO2 and H2O poisoning. In situ DRIFTs experiments further corroborated the coexistence of both Eley–Rideal and Langmuir–Hinshelwood mechanisms, indicating that the catalytic process can proceed via multiple pathways. These results highlight the synergistic effects between Ce and Ti species, as well as the structural advantages of coal gangue as a sustainable support material, providing critical insights for the development of high-performance, environmentally friendly NH3-SCR catalysts.

Composition-Tuned Ni–Ce Mixed Oxides with Inverse CeO2/Ni Structure for Enhanced Low-Temperature CO2 Methanation

Yuan Fang,Jundi Liu,Chengxi Zhang,Kande Liu,Ziying Ju,Xuan Meng,Naiwang Liu,Li Shi

This work systematically investigates the effect of Ni/Ce molar ratios (0.3–2.9) on the structure–activity relationship of Ni/Ce mixed oxides for low-temperature CO2 methanation. As the Ni/Ce ratio increased, the rate of CO2 conversion gradually increased. At a GHSV of 12,000 mL·g–1h–1, all catalysts exhibited 100% CH4 selectivity. The best-performing NiCe-2.1 catalyst not only achieved 37.2% CO2 conversion at 200 °C but also maintained above 85% CO2 conversion during the stability test at 250 °C. Characterization (XRD, BET, TEM, H2-TPR/TPD, CO2-TPD, XPS) results revealed that when Ni/Ce <2.1, the catalyst exhibited a conventional Ni/CeO2 structure. The specific surface area gradually decreased with an increasing Ni content. The activity enhancement of Ni/CeO2 structure primarily resulted from the absolute increase in the number of Ni–O–Ce interface sites. When Ni/Ce = 2.1, the catalyst formed an inverse CeO2/Ni structure, which re-exposed the CeO2 surface and significantly restored the specific surface area. TOF analysis confirmed that the interfacial sites in the inverse structure had higher intrinsic activity, thereby further improving the low-temperature activity. When Ni/Ce >2.1, excessive independent NiO phases caused severe nickel agglomeration, inhibiting the formation of additional Ni–O–Ce interfaces. Finally, in situ DRIFTS results revealed that the CO2 methanation on NiCe-2.1 mainly followed the formate pathway (CO2* → HCO3* → HCOO* → CH4).

Site-specific Ce occupation in a perovskite enables defect engineering and Ni stabilization for efficient ammonia decomposition

Yue Chen,Chen Liao,Yinhua Yao,Huan Liu,Weizhen Zhang,Yuping Qiu,Huihuang Fang,Chongqi Chen,Yu Luo,Lilong Jiang

Ammonia decomposition is an attractive route for carbon-free hydrogen production, yet Ni-based catalysts are limited by insufficient activity and severe sintering at high temperatures. Herein, Ni supported on Ce-induced perovskites were employed in ammonia decomposition. Notably, we found that site-specific Ce occupation in the support governs the defect chemistry, Ni stabilization, and catalytic performance by constructing LaAlO 3 –Ce-based supports with distinct Ce locations. When Ce is present as a separate CeO 2 phase, a LaAlO 3 -CeO 2 composite is formed, in which interfacial CeO 2 domains moderately improve Ni dispersion and suppress sintering via moderate anchoring. In contrast, A-site incorporation of Ce into the LaAlO 3 lattice induces pronounced lattice distortion and abundant oxygen vacancies, significantly enhancing support basicity and interfacial electron donation. These defect-rich environments stabilize electron-enriched Ni species, strengthen metal-support interactions, and facilitate the recombination and desorption of surface N species, thereby accelerating N* recombination during ammonia decomposition. Consequently, the Ni/LaCeAlO 3 achieves over 90% NH 3 conversion at 600 ℃ with a hydrogen production rate of 524 mmol‧g Ni −1 ‧min −1 , outperforming Ni/LaAlO 3 and Ni/LaAlO 3 -CeO 2 while maintaining excellent stability over 60 h. Kinetic analysis, together with NH 3 -TPSR and in situ DRIFTS, suggests a stepwise dehydrogenation pathway with facilitated H removal and accelerated N 2 formation, directly associated with Ce-induced oxygen vacancies and defect-mediated electronic modulation. This work demonstrates that A-site-specific Ce incorporation in perovskite oxides offers a decisive advantage over conventional composite supports, providing an effective strategy for defect engineering and the development of active and durable non-noble metal catalysts for ammonia-to-hydrogen conversion.

Constructing PVDF-based composite polymer electrolytes with polymorphic Ce-MOFs for quasi-solid-state Li/LMFP batteries

Yue Aobo,Meng Xianhe,Ruan Zikang,Ren Huixin,Sun Qiang,Hu Xiaoyu,Tang Anchun,Yu Nengjun,Kang Qiaoling,Yan Lijing

The PVDF-based polymer electrolyte has the disadvantages of low ionic conductivity and low Li + migration number at room temperature, which hinders its application in lithium-ion batteries. Herein, polymer composite electrolytes were constructed utilizing three polymorphic Ce-MOFs as functional fillers to enhance its performance. The homogeneously dispersed Ce-MOF fillers restricted the reorganization of PVDF-HFP chains, thereby led to the change in crystallization and aggregation state of the polymer. Moreover, their porous structure and active sites also promoted the Lewis acid–base interactions with the polymer and TFSI − , promoting ion dissociation. Temperature-induced phase variation produced distinct porous crystalline structures formed the tetragonal-phase MOF-76-Ce exhibiting excellent properties with a room-temperature ionic conductivity of 7.89×10⁻ 4  S cm⁻ 1 and a Li + transference number of 0.79. The full cell assembled with this electrolyte and high-energy-density polyanionic LiMn 0.6 Fe 0.4 PO 4 cathodes demonstrated good cycling stability. It could reach discharge capacity of 147 mAh g⁻ 1 at 0.2 C and a capacity retention of 91% after 200 cycles at 0.5 C under a high cutoff voltage of 4.5 V. This work offers an effective filler strategy for developing high-performance quasi-solid-state polymer electrolytes and highlights the crucial role of metal–organic framework topology in advancing safe and durable lithium metal batteries. Mn-Ce interface engineering boosts low-temperature catalytic oxidation of chlorobenzene: Optimized oxygen vacancies and acid sites

Jian Wang,Kejia Lu,Wei Wang,Jianjun Yu,Yaqi Peng,Guanghua Xia,Guanjie Wang

Atomic defects in catalysts (such as vacancies, substituted atoms, or interstitial atoms) are the decisive factors in initiating low-temperature catalytic reactions. The study achieved the selective exposure of Mn-doped CeO 2 (111) crystal planes and facilitated the migration of oxygen species at the interface through the regulation of Mn and Ce precursors, thereby enhancing the low-temperature catalytic performance for chlorobenzene (CB). The Mn: Ce precursor ratio strongly influences activity; Mn 1 Ce 1 shows optimal performance with T 50 ≈ 142 ℃ and T 90 ≈ 192 ℃. Structural analyses confirm Mn incorporation into the CeO 2 lattice across multiple facets, optimizing Mn-O v -Ce interfacial sites, increasing surface acidity, and elevating oxygen‑vacancy (O v ) concentration (3.6 ×10 13 spins/g). CB was nearly completely mineralized to CO 2 at 240 ℃, while chlorine was mainly removed as HCl. Oxygen is crucial for the dynamic generation and cycling of O v , effectively replenishing the consumed adsorbed oxygen (O ads ) during catalysis, whereas the presence of water vapor causes competitive adsorption, reducing catalytic activity. In-situ DRIFTS, in-situ EPR, and DFT calculations demonstrated that surface O ads are the primary active oxygen species. CB trapped by O v is sequentially converted into intermediates (e.g., phenol and benzoquinone) and ring-opening products (e.g., maleic anhydride and formic acid) under the action of O ads , ultimately mineralizing into CO 2 . The Mn-doped CeO 2 (111) crystal facet exhibited the lowest CB adsorption energy (-2.4 eV), O v formation energy (1.1 eV), and HCl formation energy (-1.3 eV). Furthermore, Mn serves as a dechlorination site, effectively promoting C-Cl bond cleavage and inhibiting chlorine poisoning at CeO 2 interface.

Ce-doped NiOOH coupled with Ni nanocrystals endowing high-current-density water oxidation on iron-free catalysts

Mingzhe Li,Yunlong Wang,Xin Zhang,Lei Zhou,Fengchun Zheng,Kepi Chen,Nian Ran,Yuzhen Lv,Wei Zhou

Developing iron-free transition-metal based catalysts to overcome ion-leaching degradation is still a critical challenge due to their inherent low activity and poor electron transfer characteristics for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, an iron-free catalytic material integrating amorphous Ce-doped NiOOH with Ni nanocrystals was synthesized via a one-step electrodeposition method, achieving scalable fabrication of a uniform anode over 600 cm 2 . It shows remarkably low overpotentials of 190 mV and 332 mV to achieve 10 and 1000 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH, respectively. Moreover, it maintains 98.7 % activity retention after 1000 h of continuous operation at 1000 mA cm −2 . XPS, XANES, in-situ Raman spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that Ni nanocrystals significantly enhance the interfacial and bulk charge transport in NiOOH, while Ce doping substantially promotes both the pre-oxidation process and OER kinetics. This work provides insights for designing iron-free catalytic materials with high alkaline OER performance.

Thermal insulation properties of Ce-Zr oxide ceramic fiber aerogels prepared via solution blow spinning and pyrolysis

Yumin An,Mingyao Song,Jiabao Xu,Yongshuai Xie

In this paper, Ce-Zr oxide ceramic fiber aerogels (CZOf) with effective thermal insulation properties were successfully prepared by a simple two-step method of solution blow spinning and pyrolysis. In the spinnable precursor cerium-zirconium carboxylate, the organic carboxylic acid ligands and metal inorganic salts enhanced its structural stability through coordination interactions. The effect of thermal treatment temperature and Ce doping amounts on the crystal structure of CZOf were analyzed based on XRD. At the same time, the microstructures of the CZOf heat treated at different temperatures were analyzed by SEM in detail. In addition, CZOf exhibited a compressive stress of 24.9 kPa under 80 % compressive strain, and still showed a compressive stress of 20.2 kPa after 20 compression cycles. The room-temperature thermal conductivity of CZOf was in the range of 31.4–38.3 mW m −1  K −1 . The CZOf with a thickness of 10 mm could reduce the hot surface temperature from 1200 °C to about 210.5 °C after 10min, demonstrating excellent thermal insulation performance.
