Comparative study of layered double hydroxides intercalated by MoS42− and Mo3S132− on removal of Cu(II) and Pb(II): Adsorption mechanism and environmental stability

Menglan Zhao,Yu Wang,Xiaoyu Liu,Jiyue Ding,Pingke Yan,Qian Zhang,Yujuan Gao,Zilin Meng

Mg Al layered double hydroxides (LDHs) intercalated by Mo 3 S 13 2− and MoS 4 2− (Mo 3 S 13 -LDHs/MoS 4 -LDHs) were prepared through the ion exchange method and compared their removing ability of Cu(II), Pb(II) from wastewater. When the batch experiment conducted at dosage 0.3 g/L, pH neutral, contact time 360 min, concentration 6 mmol/L and temperature 298 K, the adsorption capacity of Cu(II)/Pb(II) onto Mo 3 S 13 -LDHs and MoS 4 -LDHs was 2.76, 4.85 and 2.15, 4.66 mmol/g, Mo 3 S 13 -LDHs showed a higher adsorption capacity, which was because the larger amount of adsorption sites on Mo 3 S 13 2− . In mixed systems, Mo 3 S 13 -LDHs/MoS 4 -LDHs exhibited the preferential selectivity of Pb(II). When Mo 3 S 13 -LDHs/MoS 4 -LDHs adsorbed the low concentrations of Cu(II)/Pb(II), Mo 3 S 13 2− /MoS 4 2− first captured heavy metals and fixed into the interlayer. With the increase of concentration, Cu(II)/Pb(II) were still captured by the interlayered Mo 3 S 13 2− unlike MoS 4 -LDHs that hydroxyl groups onto LDHs began to capture Cu(II)/Pb(II). In the dynamic adsorption experiment, Mo 3 S 13 -LDHs could treat a larger volume of sewage than MoS 4 -LDHs. Mo 3 S 13 -LDHs exhibited better selectivity for Cu(II)/Pb(II) under the interference of organic and other metal ions in wastewater, and heavy metals after the treatment by Mo 3 S 13 -LDHs were more stable in the environment. Therefore, Mo 3 S 13 -LDHs could be considered as an environmentally stable adsorbent to remove heavy metals from wastewater compared to MoS 4 -LDHs.

A comparison of adsorption capacity of chitosan– rhamnolipid–hydrotalcite-like compound composites synthesized by two methods towards highly efficient removal of Cu(II) ions

Yan Li,Xiaoming Mao,Yaqin Liang,Mengzhao Li

Copper pollution in global water resources is becoming increasingly severe, posing a serious threat to human health and aquatic ecosystems. In this paper, two chitosan (CS)–rhamnolipid (RL)–hydrotalcite-like compound (HTlc) composites, designated as CS@(RL-HTlc) and (RL-HTlc)/CS, were synthesized using two distinct methods: emulsion crosslinking–coprecipitation–ion exchange and coprecipitation–ion exchange–emulsion crosslinking, respectively, to investigate their adsorption properties for Cu(II) ions. Characterization revealed that the CS@(RL-HTlc) composite possessed a crosslinked CS core with an RL-HTlc shell structure, while the (RL-HTlc)/CS microsphere exhibited a porous structure with a rough surface. The adsorption properties of these composites for Cu(II) ions were thoroughly investigated and exhibited significantly enhanced adsorption performances due to the synergistic effect between CS and RL-HTlc. Specifically, the coordination of Cu(II) ions with N/O-containing functional groups and the isomorphous substitution of Mg(II) by Cu(II) ions within the HTlc layers. Additionally, the surface-induced precipitation of Cu(OH) 2 was identified as another adsorption mechanism for CS@(RL-HTlc). Interestingly, the (RL-HTlc)/CS composite, with a larger specific surface area and a lower isoelectric point, exhibited a higher adsorption capacity compared to CS@(RL-HTlc). Moreover, (RL-HTlc)/CS outperformed CS@(RL-HTlc) as a more suitable candidate for repeated use in wastewater treatment.

Synthesis of surface-modified porous polysulfides from soybean oil by inverse vulcanization and its sorption behavior for Pb(II), Cu(II), and Cr(III)

Lyu Shiqi,Abidin Zurina Zainal,Yaw Thomas Choong Shean,Resul Mohamad Faiz Mukhtar Gunam

Guided by efficient utilization of natural plant oil and sulfur as low-cost sorbents, it is desired to tailor the porosity and composition of polysulfides to achieve their optimal applications in the management of aquatic heavy metal pollution. In this study, polysulfides derived from soybean oil and sulfur (PSSs) with improved porosity (10.2–22.9 m 2 /g) and surface oxygen content (3.1–7.0 wt.%) were prepared with respect to reaction time of 60 min, reaction temperature of 170 °C, and mass ratios of sulfur/soybean oil/NaCl/sodium citrate of 1:1:3:2. The sorption behaviors of PSSs under various hydrochemical conditions such as contact time, pH, ionic strength, coexisting cations and anions, temperature were systematically investigated. PSSs presented a fast sorption kinetic (5.0 h) and obviously improved maximum sorption capacities for Pb(II) (180.5 mg/g), Cu(II) (49.4 mg/g), and Cr(III) (37.0 mg/g) at pH 5.0 and T 298 K, in comparison with polymers made without NaCl/sodium citrate. This study provided a valuable reference for the facile preparation of functional polysulfides as well as a meaningful option for the removal of aquatic heavy metals.

Enhancement of Cu(II) in water adsorption on D113 resin modified with bi-ligand amino-triazole-thione compounds: Investigation on adsorption behavior and mechanism

Zhihui Cheng,Xingshi Li,Shuo Jiao,Dongyuan Miao,Xiaojie Yu,Hua Ni,Yuyue Geng,Ming Wang,Yaoguo Huang,Yali Zhang

A novel 3-lauramide propyl ester-4-amino-1,2,4-triazole-5-thione modified polyacrylic acid resin (LmPATT-reD113), comprising a bi-ligand amide-based triazole-thione moiety and a carboxylic acid moiety, was prepared and employed for the effective removal of Cu(II) from wastewater. The adsorption experiments demonstrated that the maximum adsorption capacity of LmPATT-reD113 for Cu (II) was 191.94 mg/g, which was 3.03 times higher than that of the polyacrylic acid resin (D113). LmPATT-reD113 and D113 had penetration times of 200 and 150 min, and equilibrium times of 1000 and 675 min, respectively. Column adsorption results showed LmPATT-reD113 outperformed D113. After four adsorption–desorption cycles, LmPATT-reD113 maintained superior performance with a desorption efficiency of 93.23 %. The adsorption kinetics and thermodynamics showed that LmPATT-reD113 to Cu(II) followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models, with Δ H , Δ S , and Δ G values of 24.836 kJ/mol, 102.187 J/(mol·K) and −3.092kJ/mol at 298.15 K, respectively. Moreover, the adsorption mechanism was investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density-functional theory (DFT), the results showed that the affinity of LmPATT-reD113 for Cu(II) mainly originated from the formation of five-membered rings by C=S and C–N complexed with Cu(II) and the formation of porous structure by O=C–NH molecules through intermolecular hydrogen bonding to promote the adsorption of copper.

Synthesis, structure and anticancer studies of Cu (II), Ni (II) and Co (II) complexes based on 2,3-dihydroxybenzaldehyde-2-(2-aminophenyl)benzimidazole Schiff base

Min Hou,Hou Cong Li,Ning An,Wen Ge Li,Jing Tong

Three metal complexes [Cu(HL)Cl](C 2 H 5 OH) 2 ] (complex 1), [Ni 4 L 2 (CH 3 COO) 4 (C 2 H 5 OH) 4 ] (complex 2) and [CoHL 2 ] (complex 3) based on 2,3-dihydroxybenzaldehyde-2-(2-aminophenyl)benzimidazole Schiff base (H 2 L) were synthesized by solvothermal reaction. The three complexes were characterized by FT-IR spectrometer, elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, and X-ray single-crystal diffraction. X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis confirmed that complex 1 belongs to monoclinic crystal system with P 2 1 /c space group, and complex 3 crystallizes in trigonal crystal system with R-3 space group. However, complex 2 crystallized in triclinic crystal system with P-1 space group and exhibits centrosymmetric tetranuclear crystallographic structure. Besides, MTT assay was studied antitumor activities against different tumor cells. The results show that the three complexes all have fine anticancer activities. Among them, complex 2 has significantly better anticancer properties against CNE-2Z cells than that of cisplatin. Finally, apoptosis and cell migration were studied to prove that complex 2 could inhibit tumor cells from proliferating in the manner of apoptosis and migration.

Controllable assembly of Cu(II) coordination compounds based on a flexible zwitterionic benzimidazole–dicarboxylate ligand: synthesis, structural diversity, reversible SCSC transformation and magnetic properties

Yan-Fang Feng,Qi Tang,Kai-Liang Luo,Ji-Qing Wu,Zhong Zhang,Yu-Ning Liang,Fu-Pei Liang

A systematic investigation on the assembly of a flexible zwitterionic ligand, 1,3-bis(2-carboxyethyl)benzimidazolium (HL), with various Cu(II) salts under different conditions afforded nine coordination compounds: [Cu2L2(NO3)2]·CH3CN (1), [Cu2L2(H2O)2](NO3)2·5H2O (2), {[CuL(H2O)](NO3)}n (3), [Cu4L4(OH)2(H2O)2](NO3)2·10H2O (4), [Cu2L2(H2O)2](ClO4)2 (5), [CuL(H2O)3]2SO4·7H2O (6), [Cu(HL)2Cl2] (7), [Cu2L2Cl2]·2H2O (8) and {[Cu2L2Cl2]·2H2O}n (9). Compounds 1 and 8 are neutral paddle-wheel shaped dinuclear clusters with either nitrate or chloride as the axial ligand, while 2 and 5 are composed of identical [Cu2L2(H2O)2]2+ cationic units displaying a paddle-wheel motif with an axially coordinated aqua ligand but different counter anions. Compound 3 exhibits a 1D linear structure, where two adjacent Cu(II) centers are triply bridged via two carboxylate groups plus one aqua ligand. Compound 4 is a tetranuclear cluster supported by two μ3-bridged OH− groups and four carboxylate bridges. Compounds 6 and 9 are mononuclear species constructed from the dicarboxylate ligand in two different coordination modes. Compound 9 assumes a 1D looped chain topology with paddle-wheel cluster nodes propagated by pairs of flexible linkers. A close examination revealed that the conformational freedom of the flexible dicarboxylate ligand as well as the labile binding modes of its two side arm carboxylates is sensitive to the reaction conditions, thus resulted in the different structural types of these coordination compounds. The solvent-induced reversible single crystal-to-single crystal (SCSC) transformation between 1 and 3 could be easily achieved via the shuttle movement of NO3− outward and inward of the Cu(II) coordination sphere accompanied by a visible color change. Upon dissolution–recrystallization, the irreversible or reversible structural transformations among 2, 3, 4 and 6 could be driven by subtly controlling some factors such as solvent, pH, temperature and counter anion. The magnetic measurements for compounds 2–4 demonstrated that their magnetic behaviors are governed by antiferromagnetic interactions despite the fact that dissimilar exchange coupling pathways between neighboring Cu(II) ions are available in these three compounds.

Preparation of PMDA@CS/PVA composite membranes and their sorption for Cu(II), Co(II), and Ni(II) in water: Experimental and statistical physics exploration

Jingyi Chen,Chunyu Ji,Junsheng Liu,Jie Zhang

A series of new PMDA@CS/PVA composite membranes were fabricated by the crosslinking of pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) with chitosan (CS) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) in the presence of glutaraldehyde (GA) as a crosslinking agent. While, their adsorptions for Cu(II), Co(II), and Ni(II) in a single- and multiple mixed solutions were investigated. It was found that the incorporation of PMDA in the membranes can significantly enhance the adsorption capacity of membranes for these metals. The fitting of kinetic modeling s showed that the sorption manner of Cu(II), Co(II) and Ni(II) on the membranes obeyed the quasi-2nd kinetic modeling, indicating that it was dominated by chemisorption. The kinetic rate constants K 2 of membranes A-E for Cu(II), Co(II), and Ni(II) were in the region of 0.005–0.02, 0.026–0.082, and 0.002–0.053 [g/(h·mg)], respectively. The fitting of sorption isotherm modeling followed the Langmuir isotherm equation and the maximal Langmuir adsorption capacities for Cu(II), Co(II), and Ni(II) could reach 36.466, 32.119, and 30.916 mg/g, respectively. In addition, in the multi-component solutions, these membranes exhibited better selection for Cu(II) in Cu(II), Co(II), and Ni(II) mixed solutions. Moreover, it can be recycled five times when an EDTA was used as a de-sorbent. The exploration based on statistical physics principle confirmed that the adsorption of these membranes for Cu(II) is a mono-ion manner. These findings suggest that PMDA@CS/PVA composite membranes are promising sorbents for the removal of toxic metal ions from waste vehicle power batteries or metal-bearing wastewater.

Colorimetric sensing strategy for β-lactamase inhibitor using generation of 2-amino-3-mercapto-3-methylbutanoic acid via enzyme catalysis and Cu(II)-mediated redox

Jun Lv,Chen Chen,Chao Qian,Wanyi Chen,Yang Xiang,Juan Zhang

A colorimetric sensing method has been proposed for the detection of β-lactamase (β-Lac) activity and the screening of the inhibitors in this work. The method is based on the aggregation of AuNPs induced by 2-amino-3-mercapto-3-methylbutanoic acid (AMMBA) through the formation of Au-S bond and electrostatic interaction . Since AMMBA can form through β-Lac catalyzed hydrolysis and Cu(II)-mediated redox with penicillin as enzyme substrate, β-Lac activity is related to the extent of AuNPs aggregation. The enzyme activity can be determined at levels as low as 0.556   U/mL and over a linear detection range as wide as from 0   U/mL to 30   U/mL. Furthermore, the inhibitory effects of clavulanic acid and sulbactam on the activity of β-Lac have also been tested and given IC 50 values of 0.92   μM and 0.06   μM, respectively. The proposed method can be not only used for the detection of β-Lac activity but also the screening of the inhibitor.

Synthesis, crystal structures and DNA-binding properties of Zn(II), Cd(II), Mn(II), Cu(II) complexes based on a thiazole derivative and carboxylic acids

Xiao-Tong Song,Ying Zhou,Gui-Bao Liu,Hui-Chao Guan,Shu-Mei Yue

By single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, five complexes, catena-[(µ-2,2-bis(4-carboxyphenyl)hexafluoropropane)-(2-(pyidin-2-yl)-1,3-benzothiazole)-aqua-zinc(II)] (1), catena-[(µ-2,2-bis(4-carboxyphenyl)hexafluoropropane)-(2-(pyidin-2-yl)1,3-benzothiazole)-aqua-cadmium(II)] (2), catena-[hepta(µ-2,2-bis(4carboxyphenyl)hexafluoropropane)-diaqua-bis(2-(pyidin-2-yl)-1,3-benzothiazole)-tri-manganes(II)] (3), catena-[(µ-benzene-1,2,4,5-tetracarboxylato)-(2-(pyidin-2-yl)-1,3benzothiazole)copper(II)] (4) and catena-[(µ-3-nitrobenzene-1,2-dicarboxylato)-(2-(pyidin-2-yl)1,3-benzothiazole)-aqua-zinc(II)] (5), were characterized in this research. In these five complexes, H2hfipbb = 2,2-bis(4-carboxyphenyl)hexafluoropropane, H4btec = 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid, H2NPTA = 3-nitrophthalic acid and bpt = 2-(pyridin-2-yl)benzo[d]thiazole). Complexes 1 and 2 occur in the monoclinic system with space group C2/c, 4 and 5 occur in the monoclinic system with space group P21/c, and 3 occurs in the triclinic system with space group P-1. The interaction between CT-DNA (calf thymus DNA) and those complexes was examined using UV spectroscopic analysis, fluorescent spectroscopic analysis, circular dichroism spectroscopy (CD) and viscosity analysis. This research reveals that those complexes have strong ability to interact with DNA, and they all bind to DNA in an intercalation mode, thus affecting the structure of DNA. This binding mode can arise from the interaction between the benzothiazole metal complexes and DNA. Hence, we hope to provide some scientific research bases for studying benzothiazole complexes and designing new thiazole anticancer drugs.

Construction of novel maple leaf-like MnO2–SiO2@PDA composites for highly efficient removal of Cu(II), Cd(II) and Ni(II) from aqueous solution

Zhiqiang Guo,Lei Sun,Hui Hou,Jian Zhou,Yuan Li,Liangliang Hu,Jinzhang Xu

The preparation of the maple leaf-like MnO 2 –SiO 2 @PDA biomimetic composites not only overcame the problem of easy agglomeration of nanoparticles, but also provided rich functional groups, large specific surface areas and good stability, achieving the efficient sorption of Cu(II), Cd(II) and Ni(II) from aqueous solution. The maximum sorption capacities of the MnO 2 –SiO 2 @PDA towards Cu(II), Cd(II) and Ni(II) attained from the Langmuir model were 218.788, 383.420 and 148.939 mg·g −1 , respectively. The sorption of Cu(II), Cd(II) and Ni(II) on the MnO 2 –SiO 2 @PDA were strongly affected by pH, but not by ionic strength, showing good resistance to salt interference. The main sorption mechanism of the MnO 2 –SiO 2 @PDA towards Cu(II), Cd(II) and Ni(II) was the strong surface complexation of the functional groups on the MnO 2 –SiO 2 @PDA with Cu(II), Cd(II) and Ni(II). Moreover, the radii of Cu(II), Cd(II) and Ni(II) ions and their complexation strength with the MnO 2 –SiO 2 @PDA jointly determined the order of the competitive sorption capacities as Cu(II) > Cd(II) > Ni(II). Given the above analyses, the maple leaf-like MnO 2 –SiO 2 @PDA biomimetic composites have excellent application prospects in practical wastewater treatment.

Simultaneous removal of Cu(II), Cd(II), Cr(VI), and rhodamine B in wastewater using TiO2 nanofibers membrane loaded on porous fly ash ceramic support

Jiayu Zhang,Mingwei Yan,Guangchao Sun,Kaiqi Liu

A novel and cost-effective TiO 2 nanofiber membrane on porous fly ash ceramic as support (TNM-PFACS), using fly ash, graphite, and industrial rutile as raw materials, was successfully obtained based on the semi-dry press and hydrothermal process. The phase composition and micro-morphology of TNM-PFACS were characterized and analyzed by XRD, EDS, SEM, and TEM. Furthermore, it was discussed about simultaneous removal of heavy metal ions (Cu(II), Cd(II), and Cr(VI)) and rhodamine B, involving the adsorption and photodegradation process. The results indicated that the removal rate (90.15%) and adsorption capacity (9.56 mg/g) of Cu(II) was maintained, while the adsorption of Cd (II) was inhibited. In the photodegradation process, rhodamine B promoted the reduction of highly toxic Cr(VI) to Cr(III), and the highest removal rate of Cr(VI) reached 97.09%. TNM-PFACS presented simultaneous removal of heavy metal ions and rhodamine B through synergism and antagonism in the adsorption and photodegradation process, which can be applied as a simpler and cost-effective material in industrial wastewater treatment.

Synthesis of large gold nanoparticles with deformation twinnings by one-step seeded growth with Cu(II)-mediated Ostwald ripening for determining nitrile and isonitrile groups

Chenshuo Wu,Hongpeng He,Yahui Song,Cuixia Bi,Lixiang Xing,Wei Du,Shenggang Li,Haibing Xia

In this work, uniform and large gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) including quasi-spherical (QS) Au NPs with average diameters of 70 to 196 nm and trisoctahedral (TOH) Au NPs with average diameters of 140 to 195 nm were successfully synthesized by controlling the concentration of Cu2+ ions and the particle number of 3 nm Au-NP seeds, respectively, using a one-step seeded growth method with Cu2+-mediated Ostwald ripening. It is found that because of the concentration-dependent under-potential deposition of Cu2+ ions (CuUPD), 3 nm Au-NP seeds are firstly changed into Au NPs with a controlled QS- or TOH shape at the initial growth stage, followed by the conformal growth of Au atoms onto the initially formed Au NPs due to Cu2+-mediated Ostwald ripening, in which the extra Au atoms come from the dissolution of in situ Au nuclei by the unavoidable self-nucleation. Moreover, the as-prepared QS Au NPs with a rough surface exhibit a better SERS performance for physically adsorbed probes (crystal violet, CV) than the TOH Au NPs with sharp tips and with a comparable size. Furthermore, the as-prepared QS Au NPs can be used to distinguish nitrile and isonitrile groups by surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) due to the presence of deformation twinnings. Thus, the as-prepared QS Au NPs with a rough surface and deformation twinnings can be further used as templates for the fabrication of bimetallic materials with multi-functionalities.
