A novel polyamine-type starch/glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) copolymer with a high capacity for the adsorption of heavy metal ions was prepared via graft copolymerization of GMA and corn starch and a subsequent amination reaction between amino group of diethylenetriamine and epoxy group in GMA. The copolymers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, and adsorption properties on modified starch of Cu(II), Pb(II), Cd(II) and Cr(III) were studied. By analysing the relationship between adsorption capacity and pH, adsorption isotherms and adsorption kinetics, it is proved that the adsorption of the four metal ions is mainly based on the chemical adsorption of coordination. The maximum adsorption capacities of the copolymer were up to 2.33, 1.25, 0.83 and 0.56 mmol g−1 for Cu(II), Pb(II), Cd(II) and Cr(III), respectively. The adsorption of the four concerned metal ions was hardly affected by common coexisting ions such as Na(I), K(I), Ca(II) and Mg(II), whereas it was slightly decreased when Fe(II) and Zn(II) coexisted in the solution, which illustrates the selective adsorption of Cu(II), Pb(II), Cd(II) and Cr(III) from wastewater. After 10 cycles of adsorption–desorption experiments, there was no significant change in the adsorption capacity, indicating that the polyamine-type starch/GMA copolymer has high adsorption capacity and good reusability.

A novel xanthate-modified chitosan/poly( N -isopropylacrylamide) (X-CS/NIPAAm) composite hydrogel was fabricated by a facile two-step method for the selective adsorption of Cu(II), Pb(II) and Ni(II) metal ions from aqueous solutions. The equilibrium adsorption data fitted well to the Langmuir model and the adsorption kinetic data followed the pseudo-second-order model. The maximum equilibrium adsorption capacities of composite hydrogel to Cu(II), Pb(II) and Ni(II) at 293 K were about 115.1, 172.0 and 66.9 mg g −1 , respectively. The thermodynamics parameters showed that the adsorption processes to Cu(II), Pb(II) and Ni(II) were spontaneous and exothermic. The interactions between metal ions for multi-components systems were evaluated by the values of Q b /Q s and Q t /Q s . The adsorption mechanism was analyzed by XPS spectra and the Hard–Soft, Acids–Bases (HSAB) theory. The X-CS/NIPAAm composite hydrogel could be regenerated and repeatedly utilized at least five cycles without obvious adsorption capacity loss.

In this study, a novel adsorbent was synthesized through the entrapment of KMnO 4 modified biochar (MB) in poly(vinyl alcohol)/sodium alginate hydrogel bead (PSMB) and then tested to determine its capacity for removal of Cu(II) from aqueous solutions. The maximum Cu(II) adsorption capacity estimated with Langmuir isotherm modeling was 87.07 mg/g of PSMB, which was higher than that of previously reported adsorbents. PSMB had a good selectivity towards Cu(II) as well as high anti-interference ability. The main species for Cu(II) adsorption likely were the inner-sphere Cu-O complexes, as indicated by the results of spectral analyses. The PSMB was easily collected and exhibited a minimal loss of adsorption capacity after 10 adsorption/regeneration cycles. The effective removal of Cu(II) from environmental water samples with relative low treatment cost indicated a possibility for practical application.

A novel strategy for the preparation of infinite coordination polymer nanoparticles (ICPs) based nanomedicines was developed, with which hyaluronic acid modified AQ4N-Cu(II)-gossypol nanoparticles (HA@AQ4N-Cu(II)-gossypol NPs) were obtained. This is a highly efficient nanomedicine, in which gossypol serves as a chemotherapeutic agent and a self-carrier material; Cu(II) serves as the connecting point and anti-tumor enhancer; AQ4N not only serves as a chemotherapeutic agent and self-carrier material, but also as the self-monitor based on its inherent fluorescence. HA@AQ4N-Cu(II)-gossypol NPs possessed a spherical shape with a dynamic size of 88.7 ± 7.4 nm, and the total drug-loading content and drug encapsulation efficiency are 77.41% and 100%, respectively. This nanomedicine has a multiple tumor-targeting ability caused by HA-receptor mediation and pH-responsive drug release. A significantly low combination index (0.097) of AQ4N and gossypol is ascertained. In vivo experiments indicate that it accumulates and significantly releases drugs at the tumor region. With the use of only one-fiftieth of AQ4N and half of gossypol of the generally administered dose, they can achieve significantly high anti-tumor efficiency with negligible side effects. Importantly, the switching-type changed fluorescence of AQ4N can be used for in vivo real-time self-monitoring of the drug release and distribution, which allows us to adjust the administration dose and time for different tumor types and stages for individual therapy.

Copper pollution in global water resources is becoming increasingly severe, posing a serious threat to human health and aquatic ecosystems. In this paper, two chitosan (CS)–rhamnolipid (RL)–hydrotalcite-like compound (HTlc) composites, designated as CS@(RL-HTlc) and (RL-HTlc)/CS, were synthesized using two distinct methods: emulsion crosslinking–coprecipitation–ion exchange and coprecipitation–ion exchange–emulsion crosslinking, respectively, to investigate their adsorption properties for Cu(II) ions. Characterization revealed that the CS@(RL-HTlc) composite possessed a crosslinked CS core with an RL-HTlc shell structure, while the (RL-HTlc)/CS microsphere exhibited a porous structure with a rough surface. The adsorption properties of these composites for Cu(II) ions were thoroughly investigated and exhibited significantly enhanced adsorption performances due to the synergistic effect between CS and RL-HTlc. Specifically, the coordination of Cu(II) ions with N/O-containing functional groups and the isomorphous substitution of Mg(II) by Cu(II) ions within the HTlc layers. Additionally, the surface-induced precipitation of Cu(OH) 2 was identified as another adsorption mechanism for CS@(RL-HTlc). Interestingly, the (RL-HTlc)/CS composite, with a larger specific surface area and a lower isoelectric point, exhibited a higher adsorption capacity compared to CS@(RL-HTlc). Moreover, (RL-HTlc)/CS outperformed CS@(RL-HTlc) as a more suitable candidate for repeated use in wastewater treatment.

Mg Al layered double hydroxides (LDHs) intercalated by Mo 3 S 13 2− and MoS 4 2− (Mo 3 S 13 -LDHs/MoS 4 -LDHs) were prepared through the ion exchange method and compared their removing ability of Cu(II), Pb(II) from wastewater. When the batch experiment conducted at dosage 0.3 g/L, pH neutral, contact time 360 min, concentration 6 mmol/L and temperature 298 K, the adsorption capacity of Cu(II)/Pb(II) onto Mo 3 S 13 -LDHs and MoS 4 -LDHs was 2.76, 4.85 and 2.15, 4.66 mmol/g, Mo 3 S 13 -LDHs showed a higher adsorption capacity, which was because the larger amount of adsorption sites on Mo 3 S 13 2− . In mixed systems, Mo 3 S 13 -LDHs/MoS 4 -LDHs exhibited the preferential selectivity of Pb(II). When Mo 3 S 13 -LDHs/MoS 4 -LDHs adsorbed the low concentrations of Cu(II)/Pb(II), Mo 3 S 13 2− /MoS 4 2− first captured heavy metals and fixed into the interlayer. With the increase of concentration, Cu(II)/Pb(II) were still captured by the interlayered Mo 3 S 13 2− unlike MoS 4 -LDHs that hydroxyl groups onto LDHs began to capture Cu(II)/Pb(II). In the dynamic adsorption experiment, Mo 3 S 13 -LDHs could treat a larger volume of sewage than MoS 4 -LDHs. Mo 3 S 13 -LDHs exhibited better selectivity for Cu(II)/Pb(II) under the interference of organic and other metal ions in wastewater, and heavy metals after the treatment by Mo 3 S 13 -LDHs were more stable in the environment. Therefore, Mo 3 S 13 -LDHs could be considered as an environmentally stable adsorbent to remove heavy metals from wastewater compared to MoS 4 -LDHs.

Guided by efficient utilization of natural plant oil and sulfur as low-cost sorbents, it is desired to tailor the porosity and composition of polysulfides to achieve their optimal applications in the management of aquatic heavy metal pollution. In this study, polysulfides derived from soybean oil and sulfur (PSSs) with improved porosity (10.2–22.9 m 2 /g) and surface oxygen content (3.1–7.0 wt.%) were prepared with respect to reaction time of 60 min, reaction temperature of 170 °C, and mass ratios of sulfur/soybean oil/NaCl/sodium citrate of 1:1:3:2. The sorption behaviors of PSSs under various hydrochemical conditions such as contact time, pH, ionic strength, coexisting cations and anions, temperature were systematically investigated. PSSs presented a fast sorption kinetic (5.0 h) and obviously improved maximum sorption capacities for Pb(II) (180.5 mg/g), Cu(II) (49.4 mg/g), and Cr(III) (37.0 mg/g) at pH 5.0 and T 298 K, in comparison with polymers made without NaCl/sodium citrate. This study provided a valuable reference for the facile preparation of functional polysulfides as well as a meaningful option for the removal of aquatic heavy metals.

A series of new PMDA@CS/PVA composite membranes were fabricated by the crosslinking of pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) with chitosan (CS) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) in the presence of glutaraldehyde (GA) as a crosslinking agent. While, their adsorptions for Cu(II), Co(II), and Ni(II) in a single- and multiple mixed solutions were investigated. It was found that the incorporation of PMDA in the membranes can significantly enhance the adsorption capacity of membranes for these metals. The fitting of kinetic modeling s showed that the sorption manner of Cu(II), Co(II) and Ni(II) on the membranes obeyed the quasi-2nd kinetic modeling, indicating that it was dominated by chemisorption. The kinetic rate constants K 2 of membranes A-E for Cu(II), Co(II), and Ni(II) were in the region of 0.005–0.02, 0.026–0.082, and 0.002–0.053 [g/(h·mg)], respectively. The fitting of sorption isotherm modeling followed the Langmuir isotherm equation and the maximal Langmuir adsorption capacities for Cu(II), Co(II), and Ni(II) could reach 36.466, 32.119, and 30.916 mg/g, respectively. In addition, in the multi-component solutions, these membranes exhibited better selection for Cu(II) in Cu(II), Co(II), and Ni(II) mixed solutions. Moreover, it can be recycled five times when an EDTA was used as a de-sorbent. The exploration based on statistical physics principle confirmed that the adsorption of these membranes for Cu(II) is a mono-ion manner. These findings suggest that PMDA@CS/PVA composite membranes are promising sorbents for the removal of toxic metal ions from waste vehicle power batteries or metal-bearing wastewater.

In order to solve the problems of environmental pollution and energy crisis, it is of great significance to develop low-cost, high-efficiency and environmentally friendly multifunctional materials to deal with environmental and energy concerns. Herein, two multifunctional Cu(II) coordination complexes with the formula {[Cu(m-bix)(FDC)(H2O)]·H2O}n (1) and {[Cu2(DAP)4(NIP)2]·DMF}n (2) (m-bix = m-bis(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene; DAP = N-(4-pyridyl)dimethylamine; H2FDC = 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid; H2NIP = 5-nitroisophthalic acid) were successfully constructed by using mixed ligands via a solvothermal method. Structural analyses show that both complexes exhibit a 1D chain structure, extending into a 3D supramolecular network via abundant hydrogen bonding forces. Electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalytic studies reveal that 1 and 2 are efficient electrocatalysts for the OER. In particular, 2 has a lower overpotential of 360 mV at 1 mA cm−2 under alkaline conditions. Furthermore, both complexes exhibit excellent photocatalytic activity due to their narrow band gaps – 2.51 eV (494 nm) for 1 and 2.77 eV (448 nm) for 2. The oxidation system composed of the complex and H2O2 can degrade methyl orange azo dyes (40 mg L−1) to less than 10% in only 150 minutes under sunlight irradiation. This work demonstrates that employing mixed ligands is a promising approach to obtain multifunctional complexes. It also opens up a unique path for the development of high-efficiency, low-cost, and environmentally friendly multifunctional materials to address environmental and energy issues.

A colorimetric sensing method has been proposed for the detection of β-lactamase (β-Lac) activity and the screening of the inhibitors in this work. The method is based on the aggregation of AuNPs induced by 2-amino-3-mercapto-3-methylbutanoic acid (AMMBA) through the formation of Au-S bond and electrostatic interaction . Since AMMBA can form through β-Lac catalyzed hydrolysis and Cu(II)-mediated redox with penicillin as enzyme substrate, β-Lac activity is related to the extent of AuNPs aggregation. The enzyme activity can be determined at levels as low as 0.556 U/mL and over a linear detection range as wide as from 0 U/mL to 30 U/mL. Furthermore, the inhibitory effects of clavulanic acid and sulbactam on the activity of β-Lac have also been tested and given IC 50 values of 0.92 μM and 0.06 μM, respectively. The proposed method can be not only used for the detection of β-Lac activity but also the screening of the inhibitor.

Carbon nanodots modified with triethylenetetramine (referred to as TCDs) are shown to be viable fluorescent probes for relay recognition of Cu(II) ion and glutathione (GSH). The assay is based on an “on-off-on” mechanism where the “on-off” effect, i.e. quenching by Cu(II) by up to 67%, is exploited to quantify it in concentrations as low as 3.4 nM. The unique quenching of fluorescence (measured at excitation/emission wavelengths of 380/470 nm; quantum yield 16%) is attributed to the fairly selective capture of Cu(II) by the amino and amide groups on the surface of the TCDs. On addition of GSH to the quenched TCD/Cu(II) complex, fluorescence is restored. This effect enables GSH to be quantified in the 0.2 to 175 μM concentration range, with a 0.11 μM detection limit. The turn-on response to GSH is highly selective over other natural amino acids and common anions. Furthermore, the TCDs were successfully applied to image Cu(II) and GSH in living yeast cells.
Carbon nanodots modified with triethylenetetramine show strong blue fluorescence which is quenched by Cu(II) but restored on addition of glutathione. Both Cu(II) (down to 3.4 nM) and glutathione (down to 110 nM) can be detected via these effects.
