Cu vacancies enhanced photoelectrochemical activity of metal-organic gel-derived CuO for the detection of l-cysteine

Chang Ping Yang,Qing Wu,Zhong Wei Jiang,Xue Wang,Cheng Zhi Huang,Yuan Fang Li

Defect engineering in the photoelectrochemical (PEC) process of photoelectrodes has been extensively studied. But insufficient attention has been received about the impact of metal vacancies (V M ) in PEC process. Herein, the influence of Cu vacancies (V Cu ) on PEC performance of copper oxide (CuO) derived from Cu-based metal-organic gel (Cu-MOG) precursor was reported. It can be found that the presence of more V Cu can improve the PEC activity of CuO photocathode by facilitating the charge separation and transfer. Moreover, the as-prepared CuO was presented as a new PEC sensor to detect l -cysteine (L-Cys) on the basis of the excellent PEC performance, which showed high sensitivity and selectivity. Good linear response of L-Cys within the range of 0.1–6 μM was performed with a detection limit of 0.04 μM. This work not only provides insights into the role of V M in the PEC process of photocathodes, but also proved the high potential applicability of CuO as a PEC device for biomolecule detection.

Combustion/decomposition characteristics of 3D-printed Al/CuO, Al/Fe2O3, Al/Bi2O3 and Al/PTFE hollow filaments

Lin Zhong,Xu Zhou,Xinying Huang,Dawei Zheng,Yaofeng Mao,Ruihao Wang,Dunju Wang

In recent decades, the preparation of various metastable intermolecular composites (MICs) has been widely reported in pursuit of excellent reactivity and safety. However, there is still relatively little research on structural energetic materials (EMs) through 3D printing of MICs inks. In this work, the hollow filaments with different MICs formulas were prepared by 3D printing using a core-shell nozzle. The morphology, thermal decomposition and gas-generation performance of the filaments were characterized, and the different combustion stages of the filaments were analyzed. The results show that the hollow filaments exhibit shorter unsteady combustion time and significantly increased steady flame propagation rate compared with solid filaments. For the hollow filaments of Al/CuO/F2311 formula (15 wt % of F2311), the unsteady combustion time is as low as 0.65 ms, and the steady flame propagation rate reaches 206.936 g/s. Thermal analysis and constant-volume combustion tests show that Al/CuO/F2311 formula provides the lowest thermal decomposition onset temperature (288 °C) and the best gas-generation performance (peak pressure: 0.191 MPa, pressurization rate: 12.337 MPa/s) compared with other composites.

Hang Zhang,Guanhua Zhang,Zhiqin Li,Ke Qu,Lei Wang,Wei Zeng,Qingfeng Zhang,Huigao Duan

Developing advanced anode materials is crucial to further enhance the performance of lithium-ion batteries for electrochemical energy storage. Metal oxides embedded in a carbonaceous matrix are supposed to be promising candidates as anode materials due to their high specific capacity and excellent stability. Herein, we report a CuO/Cu-based carbonaceous nanocomposite system which was used as an anode material for high-performance lithium-ion batteries via an efficient synergistic effect. With an improved fabrication strategy, the CuO/Cu could be ultra-uniformly dispersed in nitrogen-doped carbon nanofibers. Benefiting from the in situ pyrolysis of Cu salts with improved structural stability and conductivity, the hybrid nanofiber electrode showed a specific capacity of 572.0 mA h g−1 and steady cycling performance over 500 cycles at a constant current density of 0.5 A g−1.

High-performance sapphire metallization using a novel ZnO-B2O3-SiO2-CuO glass-based silver thick film pastes

Peiyu Zeng,Renli Fu,Chaoyue Jia,Yifan Lv,Yitao Xue

Sapphire, with its superior optical and thermal properties, is an increasingly attractive high-performance substrate material for advanced LED packaging. However, its inherent surface characteristics-namely the absence of grain boundaries and strong chemical inertness-pose significant challenges for conventional metallization processes, severely limiting its broader application in electronic packaging. To address this critical issue, this study develops a novel silver conductive paste incorporating a custom-designed ZnO–B 2 O 3 –SiO 2 –CuO (ZBSC) glass frit as the inorganic binder. A robust silver thick film was successfully fabricated on a sapphire substrate via a thick-film metallization process. We systematically investigate the effect of sintering temperature on the film's microstructure and properties. The results demonstrate that the ZBSC glass exhibits excellent comprehensive performance and exceptional compatibility with the sapphire substrate. A key finding is the in-situ formation of a spinel CuAl 2 O 4 phase at the interface during sintering, resulting from a chemical reaction between the glass frit and the substrate. This interfacial reaction is crucial for achieving superior bonding. Optimized at a sintering temperature of 850 ℃, the silver film exhibits outstanding comprehensive performance: an ultra-low sheet resistance of 2.03 mΩ/□ and a high shear strength of 21.97 MPa. This performance is attributed to a dense, well-sintered silver microstructure with a continuous and complete conductive network, intimately bonded to the sapphire substrate. This work not only provides a high-performance solution for sapphire metallization but also offers new insights into the role of interfacial chemistry in thick-film technology. The proposed method represents a high-quality, reliable metallization technique with significant promise for advanced electronic packaging applications.

Octadecylamine-Modified CuO NPs Enabling Highly Selective In Vivo Ascorbic Acid Potentiometric Detection with Enhanced Sulfide Tolerance

Siliang Zhang,Yifei Xue,Wenjie Ma,Cong Pan,Ronghuan He,Jianhua Wang,Ping Yu,Lanqun Mao

Although currently reported in vivo ascorbic acid (AA) sensors based on galvanic redox potentiometry (GRP) feature good selectivity toward biological molecules, the interference from sulfides (e.g., H2S) is still a great challenge. Herein, we demonstrate a novel shielding strategy for highly selective AA assay without the interference from H2S. The electrode was constructed by confinement of octadecylamine (ODA)-modified CuO nanoparticles (NPs) on a carbon fiber electrode (CFE), in which CuO NPs rapidly convert H2S into CuS, minimizing its electrochemical redox contribution, while the ODA layer shields against potential fluctuations arising from electrical double-layer (EDL) changes. Using this sensor, we achieved synchronous tracking of neuronal activity and H2S interference-free AA release dynamics during cortical spreading depression (CSD) in the rat cortex. AA release was temporally coincident with neuronal suppression, and higher KCl concentrations prolonged both AA elevation and neuronal silencing. Repeated induction of CSD resulted in a cumulative effect, characterized by a progressive decrease in the induction threshold and gradual increases in both the magnitude of AA elevation and its recovery time. These findings suggest that AA can serve as a real-time marker of CSD, reflecting the degree of injury burden imposed by CSD events.

Non-invasive smartphone-based saliva glucose sensing system using CuO NPs/MWCNTs composite-modified screen-printed electrodes

Qiong-qiong Ren,Chong-yang Zhang,Hao-jie Li,Lin-yan Xie,Xu-ming Sun,Qing-jun Liu

To address the limitations of traditional invasive glucose monitoring, including pain, infection risk, and poor patient compliance, this study develops a non-invasive, smartphone-based electrochemical sensing system for saliva glucose detection using a CuO NPs/MWCNTs composite-modified screen-printed electrode. The CuO nanoparticles (CuO NPs) were derived from copper metal-organic frameworks (Cu-MOFs) via high-temperature calcination, yielding a material with a high specific surface area and abundant pore structures that provide numerous glucose-reactive sites. Given the low glucose concentration in saliva, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were further incorporated to enhance the electrochemical performance. The developed sensor exhibited excellent glucose response in 0.1 M NaOH, with a wide linear range of 0.05–3 mM, a sensitivity of 0.51 mA mM −1  cm −2 , and a low detection limit of 8.94 μM (S/N = 3). Furthermore, the sensor demonstrates outstanding repeatability, long-term stability, and good anti-interference capability. In practical saliva sample tests, the system successfully tracked dynamic changes in human saliva glucose after oral glucose intake, showing good consistency with blood glucose trends. These results highlight the feasibility and preliminary potential of this platform for non-invasive glucose trend monitoring, with clinical validation in diabetic populations reserved for future work.

Enhanced visible-light photoelectrocatalysis over TiO2 NTs/Cu2O-CuO: Mechanistic insights into charge separation and pollutant degradation

Xinyi Shan,Weiyi Ju,Qingyao Wang,Qian Zhu,Jiarui Chen,Na Liu,Chenchen Jia,Ran Geng,Junjie Qi,Shengwen Liao

Addressing the escalating contamination of aquatic ecosystems by industrial dyes and heavy metals such as Cr(VI), this study presents a novel TiO 2 NTs/Cu 2 O-CuO hybrid photoelectrocatalytic system. By integrating anodic oxidation with a controlled hydrothermal process, Cu 2 O-CuO dual-phase heterojunctions were successfully anchored onto TiO 2 nanotube arrays, establishing a cascade-like band alignment for efficient charge carrier separation. The characterization confirms that the energy band structure-comprising TiO 2 NTs (3.08 eV), Cu 2 O (2.11 eV), and CuO (1.77 eV)-significantly extends visible-light absorption and suppresses the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Under combined visible-light irradiation and external bias, the system exhibits superior photoelectrocatalytic performance, achieving removal efficiencies of 96.92% for Congo red (CR), 74.87% for methylene blue (MB), and 93.64% for Cr(VI). Mechanistic insights reveal that the mineralization of pollutants is dominated by a synergistic pathway involving direct hole (h + ) oxidation and superoxide radicals (•O 2 − ) derived from O 2 reduction. Furthermore, an ecological toxicity assessment using Vigna angularis seedlings demonstrates that this photoelectrocatalytic process effectively detoxifies treated wastewater, promoting plant growth and restoring ecological safety. This work provides both a robust design principle for high-performance heterojunction photoanodes and a critical framework for evaluating the real-world environmental safety of water purification technologies.

Chirality-driven interface engineering of CuO hierarchical architectures for augmented peroxidase-like activity and interfacial antibacterial application

Xingxin Pan,Xize Chen,Yuwen Liu,Min Wang,Yujia Liu,Hongyu Zhang,Liang Feng

The engineering of the nanozyme interface is crucial for manipulating their catalytic efficacy, yet achieving this through chirality modulation still remains a significant challenge. In this work, a chirality-driven interface engineering strategy by constructing chiral L/D‑copper oxide hierarchical architectures (L/D-CuO) via a facile one-step wet-chemistry method using enantiomeric cysteine ligands. The resulting hierarchical architectures feature flower-like architectures, and more importantly exhibit intense and chiroptical activity, unambiguously confirming the successful creation of a tailored chiral interface. Steady-state kinetic analyses revealed that the engineered chiral interface significantly augmented the peroxidase-like (POD-like) activity. The L-CuO demonstrated a lower Michaelis-Menten constant (Km = 1.003 mM) and a higher maximal reaction rate (Vm = 0.0252 μM·s −1 ) compared to achiral CuO (Km = 1.38 mM, Vm = 0.0185 μM·s −1 ), indicating enhanced substrate affinity and catalytic efficiency at the interface. This augmented interfacial catalysis was effectively translated into potent antibacterial action. The L-CuO achieved a bacterial inhibition rate reaching 90.2% against E. coli and 93.1% against S. aureus , compared with only 59.3% for E. coli and 66.9% for S. aureus antibacterial efficacy for achiral CuO. In practical fruit preservation, the chiral hierarchical architectures effectively functioned as an interfacial antimicrobial coating, significantly preserving fruit quality by inhibiting surface microbial spoilage. This work highlights the profound impact of chirality-driven interface engineering on nanozyme functionality and provides a foundational strategy for designing advanced interfacial catalysts for antibacterial and other biomedical applications.

Synergistic nitrogen vacancies boost S-scheme charge separation in CuO/carbon nitride for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production

Jiani Qin,Yongqi Zhang,Minna Duan,Ruochen Hua,Chuanyi Wang,Bao Pan

Carbon nitride (CN)-based S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts are a research hotspot for photocatalytic water splitting due to their efficient charge separation capability. This study successfully constructed a CuO/CN S-scheme heterojunction via a two-step calcination method and systematically investigated the effects of CuO content and calcination temperature on the material properties. Characterization results revealed that CuO nanoparticles were uniformly loaded onto CN nanosheets. 0.28 %CuO/CN exhibited the largest specific surface area and the narrowest bandgap. Synergistic nitrogen vacancies significantly enhanced charge carrier separation efficiency. Under 100 W LED light irradiation, the photocatalytic performance showed that 0.28 %CuO/CN calcined at 550 °C under air atmosphere achieved an H 2 evolution rate of 10.4 mmol h −1  g −1 and an apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 11.5 %, which is 9.0 times higher than that of pure CN. Furthermore, the activity decreased by only 3.4 % after 4 cycles. Mechanistic studies confirmed by in-situ EPR and band structure analysis, demonstrated that the built-in electric field drives electrons to follow an S-scheme migration path. This work provides a new strategy for designing highly efficient and stable defect-engineered S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts.

Interface Engineering of NiO/CuO Heterojunction Enabling Built-In Electric Field for Efficient Electrocatalytic Ammonia Oxidation Reaction

Qichen Wang,Jun Li,Qiuying Wang,Haotian Tan,Yunrui Tian,Chao Wang,Wenping Si,Yangsen Xu,Xiao Yan,Ji Liang

Electrocatalytic ammonia oxidation reaction (AOR), as a promising energy conversion technology, also offers ideas for the synthesis of high-value nitrogenous compounds such as nitrites and nitrates. However, the sluggish kinetics of AOR at the anode leads to high overpotential and elevated energy consumption, necessitating advanced catalysts. Here, we engineer a NiO/CuO heterojunction on a copper mesh (NiO/CuO@Cu), which generates a robust internal electric field at the NiO–CuO interface. The built-in electric field facilitates interface electron redistribution and surface electronic state modulation, significantly enhancing the charge transfer and AOR kinetics. The NiO/CuO@Cu catalyst exhibits a low onset potential of 1.38 V vs RHE, along with 95.8% ammonia conversion efficiency and 90.6% nitrite selectivity during 8-h operation at 1.6 V vs RHE. Notably, the catalyst shows excellent operation stability for over 56 h. This work presents interface engineering through heterojunction design as an effective strategy for AOR enhancement, providing valuable insights for developing high-performance electrocatalysts in energy conversion technologies.

Rational design of CuO/SiO2 nanocatalyst with anchor structure and hydrophilic surface for efficient hydrogenation of nitrophenol

Longlong Geng,Gang Li,Xiuling Zhang,Xiangmei Wang,Chunhui Li,Zhongmin Liu,Da-Shuai Zhang,Yong-Zheng Zhang,Guangyin Wang,Haixiang Han

Morphology and surface property are critical property-defining factors for metal oxide catalysts, therefore, the rational engineering on these aspects is considered as the effective means to enhance their overall catalytic activities. In this work, a silicon oxide (SiO 2 ) with hierarchical structure was successfully prepared and applied as carrier for the design of SiO 2 -supported copper oxide catalysts (CuO/SiO 2 -x, x represents treating temperature of SiO 2 during preparation). The morphology and composition of thus-obtained catalysts were characterized by XRD , SEM, HRTEM , XPS , FTIR , contact angle and N 2 adsorption. Interestingly, even with relatively large CuO particles , excellent activity was also achieved in hydrogenation of nitrophenol under relatively mild conditions (25 °C and 1 atm). Over the optimal CuO/SiO 2 -800 catalyst, the 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) conversion reached 99% in 60 s and its hydrogenation rate was about 9.2 times that of bare CuO catalyst. Additionally, it could also be reused for at least eight times without obvious fading in efficiency. The excellent catalytic performance can be attributed to the synergy between surface-anchored structure in which more active sites can be exposed, and hydrophilic surface to promote the adsorption and diffusion of substrate molecules during hydrogenation process.

Flexible CuO Nanosheets/Reduced-Graphene Oxide Composite Paper: Binder-Free Anode for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries

Yu Liu,Wei Wang,Lin Gu,Yewu Wang,Yulong Ying,Yiyin Mao,Luwei Sun,Xinsheng Peng

Flexible free-standing CuO nanosheets (NSs)/reduced graphene oxide (r-GO) hybrid lamellar paper was fabricated through vacuum filtration and hydrothermal reduction processes. A unique three-dimensional nanoporous network was achieved with CuO NSs homogeneously embedded within the r-GO layers. This hybrid lamellar composite paper was examined as a binder-free anode for lithium ion batteries, and demonstrated excellent cyclic retention with the specific capacity of 736.8 mA h g–1 after 50 cycles. This is much higher than 219.1 mA h g–1 of the pristine CuO NSs and 60.2 mA h g–1 of r-GO film at the same current density of 67 mA g–1. The high capacitance and excellent cycling performance were generated from the integrated nanoporous structure compose of CuO NSs spaced r-GO layers, which offered an efficient electrically conducting channels, favored electrolyte penetration, and buffered to the volume variations during the lithiation and delithiation process. These outstanding electrochemical capabilities of CuO NSs/r-GO paper holds great promise for flexible binder-free anode for lithium ion batteries.
