Novel poly(anhydride-ester)-b-poly(ethylene glycol) copolymers (PAE-b-PEGs) were synthesized by esterization of methyl poly(ethylene glycol) and poly(anhydride-ester), which were obtained by the melt polycondensation of α, ω- acetic anhydride-terminated poly(L-lactic
acid), and characterized by 1H-NMR and gel permeation chromatography. The two poly(anhydride-ester)-b-poly(ethylene glycols) (denoted as PAE-b-PEG2k and PAE-b-PEG5k) thus obtained can selfassemble in water to form micelles with hydrodynamic
diameters of 92.5 and 97.5 nm above their critical micelle concentrations of 3.78 and 2.36 μg/mL, respectively. The curcumin-loaded PAE-b-PEG2k and PAE-b-PEG5k micelles were prepared by the solid dispersion method, and they could encapsulate approximately
7% (w/w) curcumin. The diameters of the micelles were stable for 5 days. Curcumin is released faster from the micelles at pH 5.0 than at pH 7.4. Curcumin is released from the micelles at a fast rate during the initial 12 h, followed by a zero-order release during the subsequent 200 h, both
at pH 5.0 and 7.4. The IC50 values of the curcumin-loaded PAE-b-PEG2k and PAE-b-PEG5k micelles against HeLa cells are 12.41 and 15.31 μg/mL, respectively, which is lower than that of free curcumin (25.90 μg/mL). The PAE-bPEG2k
micelles are taken up faster than the PAE-b-PEG5k micelles by HeLa cells. Curcumin-loaded micelles can induce G2/M phase cell cycle arrest and apoptosis of HeLa cells.

Based on the abnormally increased expression of CD44 receptors on renal tubule epithelial cells during ischemia/reperfusion-induced acute kidney injury (AKI), we developed a hyaluronic acid-curcumin (HA-CUR) polymeric prodrug targeting to epithelial cells and then relieving oxidative stress damages. The water solubility of HA-CUR was significantly enhanced and approximately 27-fold higher than that of CUR. Cellular uptake test showed HA-CUR was preferably internalized by H 2 O 2 -pretreated tubular epithelial (HK-2) cells compared with free CUR benefiting from the specific binding between HA and CD44 receptors. Biodistribution results further demonstrated the increased accumulation of HA-CUR in kidneys with 13.9-fold higher than that of free CUR. Pharmacodynamic studies indicated HA-CUR effectively ameliorated AKI, and the exact mechanism was that HA-CUR protected renal tubule epithelial cells from oxidative stress damage via inhibiting PtdIns3K-AKT-mTOR signaling pathway. Taken together, this study provides a new therapeutic strategy for the treatment of AKI based on the pathogenesis of the disease.

The treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) remains difficult because of the insufficient drug accumulation at lesion sites and the difficulty in regulating the complex reactive oxygen species (ROS) and hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) microenvironment. Metal nanozymes, which have catalytic abilities similar to those of natural enzymes, provide a promising method for targeted drug delivery and therapeutic regulation. Therefore, in this research, a new oral nanoparticle drug delivery system was constructed. This system achieved targeted delivery and modulated ROS and H 2 S levels. In this system, curcumin (Cur) and magnesium (Mg) coordination driven nanozymes (C-M) were constructed, followed by encapsulation with chitosan, chondroitin sulfate, and alginate to create a C-M-encapsulated nanoparticle (C-M@aNP). C-M@aNP exhibited uniform particle size, strong stability in acidic environments, and pH-responsive characteristics, enabling effective scavenging of ROS and H 2 S. This nanosystem demonstrated excellent biocompatibility and facilitated CD44 receptor targeting, thereby promoting cellular uptake and endocytosis, which enhanced its anti-inflammatory functions. In a colitis mouse model, the C-M@aNP not only effectively regulated excessive levels of ROS and H 2 S in the inflamed colon but also reduced the expression of proinflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β) and increased the expression of anti-inflammatory cytokines (TGF-β) while inhibiting the activity of proinflammatory enzymes (COX-2 and iNOS). In conclusion, C-M@aNP exhibits biological safety and significant therapeutic potential for IBD, suggesting its potential as a promising clinical treatment strategy. Unlike conventional preservation methods that passively store food, active packaging materials proactively prevent microbial contamination and, when combined with polyphenols, can also serve as intelligent systems for freshness monitoring. In this study, polypropylene (PP)-based membranes incorporating curcumin (Cur) and quercetin (Quer) were developed and characterized to evaluate their potential use in food packaging applications. The membranes exhibited low water vapor permeability, indicating strong barrier properties. Among the formulations, the PP-Cur-A2 (Cur-loaded PP-A2, where A2 refers to chlorinated polypropylene (PP-Cl) obtained from Sigma-Aldrich) membrane showed superior mechanical performance (tensile strength: 24.10 ± 1.06 MPa; elongation at break: 378%) and achieved complete curcumin release within 20 days. Importantly, the membranes displayed distinct color transitions under different pH conditions, confirming their functionality as pH-responsive indicators. In addition, when tested both with fresh shrimp in Petri dishes and in aqueous ammonia environments, the membranes exhibited visible and progressive color changes in response to spoilage-related volatile compounds. Overall, the developed membranes demonstrated efficient bioactive release, excellent barrier characteristics, and reliable colorimetric indicator functionality, underscoring their promise for sustainable and intelligent food packaging applications.

Spirulina platensis is a nutrient-rich cyanobacterium with immune-enhancing, anti-aging, and cholesterol-lowering properties. However, fresh Spirulina is highly susceptible to spoilage during storage. This study developed a preservation strategy based on curcumin encapsulated in hydroxypropyl- β -cyclodextrin (HBC-Cur) to improve the storage stability of fresh Spirulina . During storage, treatment of fresh Spirulina with 2 mg/mL HBC-Cur exhibited protective effects by synergistically inhibiting microbial growth and mitigating oxidative reactions. Chlorophyll content was retained at 74.39% of the initial level. In terms of lipid and protein oxidation, malondialdehyde (MDA) content decreased by 45.73%, and protein carbonyl formation was reduced by 19.69%, indicating effective alleviation of oxidative deterioration. In addition, biogenic amines remained at consistently low levels, with putrescine content reduced by 76.53% relative to the control after 8 days. During the late storage phase, oxidative rancidity and spoilage-related VOCs, including hexanal, heptanal, nonenal, propionic acid, and nitrogen- and sulfur-containing volatiles, significantly increased in the control, whereas the VOCs of HBC-Cur-treated Spirulina remained relatively stable. This approach may offer a potential strategy for preserving bioactive components and suppressing the formation of spoilage-related compounds in Spirulina with implications for the development of sustainable food storage technologies. Bio-based bismaleimide (BMI) resins can reduce environmental impact and impart intrinsic flame retardancy, but achieving a high glass transition temperature (Tg) remains challenging. Here, we replace the conventional petrochemical co-monomer O,O′-diallyl bisphenol A (DABPA) with a synthesized tri-allyl derivative of curcumin (AEC) in 4,4′-bismaleimidodiphenylmethane (BDM)-based resins. The AEC monomer, synthesized via exhaustive O- and C-alkylation of curcumin, acts as a trifunctional crosslinker. By systematically varying the imide:allyl molar ratio, we optimized the network properties. We optimize the network’s thermal and fire-safety properties. The optimized formulation (BDM: AEC = 1:0.87, denoted BA-0.87) yields 43.06% char at 800 °C and reduces the peak heat release rate (PHRR) by 13.2% compared to the conventional BDM/DABPA control (BD-0.87). Meanwhile, BA-0.87 passes UL-94 V-0 with no dripping and attains aTg above 400 °C—nearly 100 °C higher than BD-0.87. These enhancements arise from curcumin’s rigid conjugated structure, which increases crosslink density and promotes char formation during decomposition. Our work demonstrates a viable, bio-derived pathway to engineer BMI resins that simultaneously improve thermal stability and intrinsic flame retardancy. Such resins are promising for demanding aerospace and high-temperature electronic applications that require both fire safety and stability.

Uterine pain associated with labor, dysmenorrhea, or endometriosis is often driven by inflammation, which enhances nociceptive signaling and contributes to hyperalgesia. Although nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and glucocorticoids are commonly prescribed, their clinical application is limited by side effects, and a subset of patients exhibit inadequate or no response to NSAID therapy. Curcumin, a natural polyphenol extracted from Curcuma longa , exhibits well-documented anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. In this study, we investigated the analgesic efficacy and underlying mechanisms of curcumin in a mouse model of uterine pain. Both intraperitoneal and intrathecal administration of curcumin significantly reduced writhing responses and improved locomotor performance in open-field tests. Molecular analyses revealed that estrogen and oxytocin treatment induced activation of glial cells in the dorsal root ganglia (DRG) and spinal cord. Intrathecal curcumin attenuated the activation of satellite glial cells and macrophages in the DRG, suppressed MAPK signaling (ERK, JNK, and p38), and decreased the expression of proinflammatory mediators, including IL-6, TNF-α, IL-1β, CCL2, and CXCL1. Similarly, in the spinal cord, curcumin reduced astrocyte and microglia activation, MAPK phosphorylation, and inflammatory cytokine and chemokine levels. Moreover, curcumin diminished p-ERK expression in DRG neurons and reduced c-Fos expression in the spinal dorsal horn. Collectively, these findings demonstrate that curcumin alleviates uterine pain by suppressing glial activation, MAPK signaling, and inflammatory mediators' production, ultimately reduces markers of neuronal activation and plasticity in the DRG and spinal cord. This provides mechanistic support for curcumin's potential in managing uterine pain.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a frequent complication of sepsis. It has been reported that curcumin can alleviate sepsis-associated AKI (SA-AKI). This study aims to elucidate the regulatory effects and mechanisms of curcumin on ferroptosis in the context of SA-AKI. In this study, septic mice and lipopolysaccharide-stimulated HK-2 cells were employed to simulate the pathological conditions of SA-AKI. The status of renal injury and ferroptosis-related indicators was determined to assess the regulatory effect of curcumin on ferroptosis in SA-AKI. Furthermore, the expression of α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (α7nAChR) was intervened to investigate the specific protective mechanism of curcumin in SA-AKI. Finally, the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2) inhibitor ML385 was incorporated to further elucidate the potential pathway through which α7nAChR regulates ferroptosis. The results demonstrated that curcumin exerted a significant protective effect on SA-AKI cells and animal models, markedly reducing cellular damage and renal injury in mice, attenuating the inflammatory response, and effectively inhibiting ferroptosis in renal cells and tissues. Furthermore, curcumin treatment upregulated the expression of α7nAChR in both SA-AKI cells and animal models. Nevertheless, the inhibition of α7nAChR expression partially counteracted the ameliorative effects of curcumin on injury and ferroptosis in SA-AKI cells and animal models. The overexpression of α7nAChR attenuated LPS-induced ferroptosis in HK-2 cells, whereas ML385 reversed the inhibitory impact of α7nAChR upregulation on cellular ferroptosis. In conclusion, these findings indicate that curcumin suppresses ferroptosis by upregulating α7nAChR to activate the antioxidant capacity of NRF2, thereby providing a protective effect against SA-AKI.

Curcumin is extensively existed in plants and is commonly used as food additives. However, excessive intake of curcumin may lead to side effects like nausea and vomiting. Traditional techniques such as high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS) are constrained by cumbersome operations and low efficiency. Herein, a triple-emission surface molecularly imprinted fluorescence sensor (TPP&RhB-SMIPs) was fabricated via precipitation polymerization on halloysite nanotubes (HNTs), using aggregation-induced emission luminogen (AIEgen) TPP-M and allyl rhodamine B as fluorophores. This sensor exhibits distinct fluorescence color transitions (purple-fuchsia-carnation-yellow-chartreuse) with increasing curcumin concentrations, coupled with a linear range of 0.1–4.0 μmol L −1 and a low detection limit of 44 nmol L −1 . It demonstrates excellent selectivity and achieves satisfactory recoveries in ginger and beverage samples. A smartphone-integrated portable device was further developed for on-site visual detection of curcumin. This work provides a reliable, rapid, and cost-effective strategy for curcumin analysis, holding great promise for food safety monitoring.

Conventional plastic packaging faces significant challenges due to its non-biodegradable nature and lack of active preservation functionality, leading to environmental pollution and food waste. To address these issues, this study developed a curcumin-zein composite film as a multifunctional active packaging material based on natural polymers. Systematic characterization confirmed that curcumin was incorporated into the zein matrix through intermolecular interactions. Functional evaluations demonstrated that the composite film exhibits excellent UV-shielding performance, remarkable antioxidant and antibacterial activities, as well as favorable biodegradability and biosafety. In preservation tests on cherry tomatoes and black grapes, the 5% Cur-Zein composite film effectively delayed fruit quality deterioration, reducing weight loss, color changes, and nutrient consumption. This study demonstrates that the Cur-Zein composite film represents a green and high-performance active packaging material with good potential for reducing food loss and extending the shelf life of fruits.

A bio-based nanocellulose hydrogel is engineered via dual dynamic crosslinking of DACNF, CMCS, and PVA. • pH-responsive curcumin release is regulated by imine bond cleavage and ionization-induced swelling. • Synergistic interactions of CMCS, TA, and curcumin achieve > 99% antibacterial activity and enhanced antioxidant capacity. • The hydrogel accelerates wound healing in vivo by reducing inflammation and promoting collagen deposition. Researchers are increasingly interested in valorizing cellulose from industrial crops to create multifunctional materials for sustainable and value-added applications. In this study, a bio-based pH-responsive nanocellulose hydrogel was fabricated using dialdehyde cellulose nanofibers (DACNF) as the structural backbone, along with carboxymethyl chitosan and two representative polyphenols (tannic acid and curcumin) derived from industrial crops. The formation involved synergistic physical interactions and dynamic covalent crosslinking. The resulting hydrogel exhibited a robust three-dimensional network, high water absorption capacity, and reversible bonding characteristics, enabling pH-regulated release of curcumin. At pH 5.5, protonation of the Schiff base linkages decreases their stability, resulting in partial network relaxation and the initial release of curcumin. As the process progresses, gradual cleavage of imine bonds, together with the persistence of borate ester crosslinking, leads to a sustained and delayed release behavior. In contrast, a higher cumulative curcumin release was observed under weakly alkaline conditions (pH 7.4). The hydrogel showed excellent antibacterial activity (>99% inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli) and strong antioxidant capacity (89.57%). A feasibility assessment in vivo evaluation demonstrated enhanced wound healing, characterized by reduced inflammation and improved collagen deposition. This work highlights an effective strategy for transforming cellulose-based industrial crops into functional bioactive hydrogels with promising application potential. The increasing burden of Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) significantly
impacts human health. Approximately 70% of septic patients develop
AKI, which markedly increases the risk of in-hospital mortality. However,
current treatment for Sepsis-Associated Acute Kidney Injury (SA-AKI)
is mainly supportive, and no specific therapy is available. siRNA
therapy is an emerging approach that inhibits mRNA of specific targets
to exert therapeutic effects. Based on the gene silencing principle
of siRNA, we developed a targeted bifunctional coloaded nanoparticle,
PDA@Cur–PEI-PEG-FA/siRela (PCPPFS), using folic acid (FA) as
a targeting moiety. In this system, curcumin acts as a therapeutic
agent and synergizes with siRela to exert anti-inflammatory and antioxidative
stress effects, thereby reducing apoptosis and pyroptosis of renal
tubular epithelial cells. This nanosystem demonstrated good targeting
and therapeutic effects in both in vitro and in vivo experiments,
providing a new approach for SA-AKI therapy.
