Long-Life Regenerated LiFePO4 from Spent Cathode by Elevating the d-Band Center of Fe

Kai Jia,Jun Ma,Junxiong Wang,Zheng Liang,Guanjun Ji,Zhihong Piao,Runhua Gao,Yanfei Zhu,Zhaofeng Zhuang,Guangmin Zhou,Hui-Ming Cheng

A large amount of spent LiFePO 4 (LFP) has been produced in recent years because it is one of the most widely used cathode materials for electric vehicles. The traditional hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical recycling methods are doubted because of the economic and environmental benefits; the direct regeneration method is considered a promising way to recycle spent LFP. However, the performance of regenerated LFP by direct recycling is not ideal due to the migration of Fe ions during cycling and irreversible phase transition caused by sluggish Li + diffusion. The key to addressing the challenge is to immobilize Fe atoms in the lattice and improve the Li + migration capability during cycling. In this work, spent LFP is regenerated by using environmentally friendly ethanol, and its cycling stability is promoted by elevating the d-band center of Fe atoms via construction of a heterogeneous interface between LFP and nitrogen-doped carbon. The Fe  O bonding is strengthened and the migration of Fe ions during cycling is suppressed due to the elevated d-band center. The Li + diffusion kinetics in the regenerated LFP are improved, leading to an excellent reversibility of the phase transition. Therefore,  the regenerated LFP exhibits an ultrastable cycling performance at a high rate of 10 C with ≈80% capacity retention after 1000 cycles.

D-Cysteine Functionalized Superhydrophobic Nanocomposite Coating with Multiple-Action Antibacterial Property and Enhanced Mechanical Durability

Hongchang Qian,Wenlong Liu,Weiwei Chang,Xiangping Hao,Dawei Zhang

In this study, a durable superhydrophobic antibacterial coating was developed by a facile spraying method. A mixture of bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (BADGE) and hydrophobic SiO2nanoparticles was sprayed on carbon steel to provide a superhydrophobic substrate. D-cysteine (D-cys) functionalized SiO2/dopamine/silver nanoparticles with multilayer core-shell structure were then sprayed on superhydrophobic substrate to enhance antibacterial performance. The results of morphology observation and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicated the successful preparation of antibacterial nanoparticles and presented the hierarchical micro/nanostructures of coating surface. The as-prepared coating exhibited superhydrophobicity, with the water contact angle of ~153°. The coating was endowed with good mechanical durability, which maintained the water contact angle of ~150° after 180 cycles in tape-peel tests. The results of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy showed satisfactory corrosion resistance of this coating during 3 days of immersion in 3.5% NaCl solution. Furthermore, the coating showed excellent antibacterial performances againstEscherichia coliandPseudomonas aeruginosa, which benefited from the synergistic actions of low wettability of superhydrophobic surface, bactericidal behavior of Ag nanoparticles, and biofilm inhibition effect of D-cys.Keywords:superhydrophobic coatings;antibacterial;D-cysteine;silver nanoparticles

Immobilization of d-allulose 3-epimerase into magnetic metal–organic framework nanoparticles for efficient biocatalysis

Xue Kai,Liu Chun-Li,Yang Yankun,Liu Xiuxia,Zhan Jinling,Bai Zhonghu

d -allulose is a rare low-calorie sugar that has many fundamental biological functions. d -allulose 3-epimerase from Agrobacterium tumefaciens (AT-DAEase) catalyzes the conversion of d -fructose to d -allulose. The enzyme has attracted considerable attention because of its mild catalytic properties. However, the bioconversion efficiency and reusability of AT-DAEase limit its industrial application. Magnetic metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have uniform pore sizes and large surface areas and can facilitate mass transport and enhance the capacity for enzyme immobilization. Here, we successfully encapsulated cobalt-type AT-DAEase into the cobalt-based magnetic MOF ZIF-67@Fe 3 O 4 using a self-assembly strategy. We confirmed the immobilization of enzyme AT-DAEase and characterized the enzymatic properties of the MOF-immobilized AT-DAEase@ZIF-67@Fe 3 O 4 . The AT-DAEase@ZIF-67@Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles had higher catalytic activity (65.1 U mg −1 ) and bioconversion ratio (38.1%) than the free AT-DAEase. The optimal conditions for maximum enzyme activity of the AT-DAEase@ZIF-67@Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles were 55 °C and pH 8.0, which were significantly higher than those of the free AT-DAEase (50 °C and pH 7.5). The AT-DAEase@ZIF-67@Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles displayed significantly improved thermal stability and excellent recycling performance, with 80% retention of enzyme activity at a temperature range of 45–70 °C and > 45% of its initial activity after eight cycles of enzyme use. The AT-DAEase@ZIF-67@Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles have great potential for large-scale industrial preparation of d -allulose by immobilizing cobalt-type AT-DAEase into magnetic MOF ZIF-67@Fe 3 O 4 .

Confined Ultrafine Pt in Porous Carbon Fibers and Their N-Enhanced Heavy d-π Effect

Yu-Xuan Xiao,Jie Ying,Jiang-Bo Chen,Yuan Dong,Xiong Yang,Ge Tian,Jinsong Wu,Christoph Janiak,Kenneth I. Ozoemena,Xiao-Yu Yang

The heavy d-π effect is an important theoretical model for strong Pt–C interaction, and its enhancement is critical to the high-performance design of Pt/C electrocatalysts. Common chemical N-doping to the carbon support can provide possibilities for enhanced electrocatalysis but most often leads to random interaction with Pt nanoparticles (Pt-NPs) and uncontrollable tuning of the heavy d-π effect. Directional confinement of Pt-NPs within N-doped carbon to directly enhance the heavy d-π effect is therefore mostly preferred but rarely reported. Herein, confined ultrafine Pt-NPs in N-doped porous carbon fibers (Pt@NDPCF) were obtained by a combination method involving electrospinning, carbonization, and directional replacement. Such a synthetic strategy leads to highly dispersed, ultrafine Pt-NPs in hierarchically porous carbon fibers and a strong directional interaction of Pt with pyridinic N, which significantly enhances the heavy d-π effect, greatly facilitating electron transfer and optimizing Pt 5d orbitals. Based on these advances, Pt@NDPCF exhibited outstanding activity and superior durability in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), with 24 mV lower overpotential at 10 mA cm–2 and a much smaller activity loss after 10,000 cycles of durability tests in comparison with a commercial Pt/C catalyst. This work sheds new lights on the design of high-performance Pt-based nanomaterials toward HER or other practical applications.

An Enzymatic Biosensor for the Detection of D-2-Hydroxyglutaric Acid in Serum and Urine

Bo Wu,Zehua Li,Zepeng Kang,Chunling Ma,Haiyan Song,Fuping Lu,Zhiguang Zhu

D-2-hydroxyglutaric acid (D2HG) is overproduced as a result of the D-2-hydroxyglutaric aciduria and relevant cancers, caused by gene mutation. Accurate analysis of D2HG could help rapid diagnosis of these diseases and allow for timely treatment. In this work, a D-2-hydroxyglutarate dehydrogenase fromRalstonia solanacearum(RsD2HGDH) is cloned and recombinantly expressed. This enzyme features the direct electron transfer to chemical electron mediators (such as methylene blue (MB)) in the absence of additional coenzymes. Therefore, NAD+, a natural electron acceptor for the commercial D2HGDH and usually known for being unstable and difficult for immobilization can be avoided in the preparation of biosensors. TheRsD2HGDH and MB are co-immobilized on a two-dimensional material, Ti3C2MXene, followed by drop-coating on the gold screen-printed electrode (AuSPE) to construct a compact and portable biosensor. The D2HG in samples can be catalyzed byRsD2HGDH, where the current change is measured by chronoamperometry at −0.23 V. The biosensor shows a D2HG detection range of 0.5 to 120 µM (R2= 0.9974) with a sensitivity of 22.26 μA mM−1cm−2and a detection limit of 0.1 µM (S/N = 3). The biosensor retains 72.52% performance of its incipient state after 30 days of storage. The samples of D2HG-containing fetal bovine serum and artificial urine were analyzed with the recovery of 99.56% to 106.83% and 97.30% to 102.47% further indicating the great application potential of our portable D2HG biosensor.Keywords:D-2-hydroxyglutaric acid;MXene;biosensor;screen-printed electrode;D-2-hydroxyglutarate dehydrogenase

Synergistic D-Amino Acids Based Antimicrobial Cocktails Formulated via High-Throughput Screening and Machine Learning

Jingzhi Yang,Yami Ran,Shaopeng Liu,Chenhao Ren,Yuntian Lou,Pengfei Ju,Guoliang Li,Xiaogang Li,Dawei Zhang

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) from pathogenic bacterial biofilms has become a global health issue while developing novel antimicrobials is inefficient and costly. Combining existing multiple drugs with enhanced efficacy and/or reduced toxicity may be a promising approach to treat AMR. D-amino acids mixtures coupled with antibiotics can provide new therapies for drug-resistance infection with reduced toxicity by lower drug dosage requirements. However, iterative trial-and-error experiments are not tenable to prioritize credible drug formulations, owing to the extremely large number of possible combinations. Herein, a new avenue is provide to accelerate the exploration of desirable antimicrobial formulations via high-throughput screening and machine learning optimization. Such an intelligent method can navigate the large search space and rapidly identify the D-amino acid mixtures with the highest anti-biofilm efficiency and also the synergisms between D-amino acid mixtures and antibiotics. The optimized drug cocktails exhibit high antimicrobial efficacy while remaining non-toxic, which is demonstrated not only from in vitro assessments but also the first in vivo study using a lung infection mouse model.

Synergistic d-p hybridized Co/W5N4 heterostructure catalyst for industrial alkaline water/seawater hydrogen evolution

Shipeng Geng,Liming Chen,Lianmei Kang,Ruchun Li,Haixin Chen,Luo Cheng,Dandan Cai,Yi Wang,Shuqin Song

Developing efficient and durable non-precious metal electrocatalysts with industrial current density is urgent for hydrogen evolution reaction from alkaline water/seawater but remains challenging. Here, a heterostructured Co/W 5 N 4 catalyst with porous structure is innovatively constructed. The theoretical calculations confirm the strong d-p hybridization between Co and N at the interface of Co/W 5 N 4 with the modulation of d‐band center of Co sites. The synergistic effect between Co and W 5 N 4 is disclosed that H 2 O can rapidly dissociate on the W sites to generate H* adsorbed at the Co sites for favorable H 2 production. Consequently, the Co/W 5 N 4 catalyst affords low overpotentials of 113 and 118 mV to drive current density of 100 mA cm −2 in alkaline water/seawater electrolytes, respectively, which are even superior to those of commercial Pt/C. More importantly, it can also present outstanding HER stability at large current density of 500 mA cm −2 for over two weeks (350 h) in alkaline water/seawater electrocatalysis.

Exploration of D-limonene as a sex pheromone for males of Bactrocera minax (Diptera: Tephritidae)

Xiaoqin Cheng,Qiang Wen,Yunna Li,Shanshan Wang,Gang Fan,Zhaocheng Ma,Yuancheng Guo,Xiaoxue Li,Hongyu Zhang

BACKGROUND Bactrocera minax is a devastating pest of citrus fruits. However, there have been no effective control measures before. Few reports on the sex pheromones of B. minax are available. RESULTS In this study, nine of the volatile compounds in adult females were identified using headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) in combination with gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). Among them, d-limonene, caprolactam, 2-Nitro-1H-imidazole, and creatinine could evoke antennal responses in males. Field bioassays showed that only d-limonene could lure male flies, with a relative lure rate of 78.18% in all tested samples, which was significantly higher than that of paraffin oil control, while all volatile compounds did not have any lure effective to female flies. Moreover, d-limonene was diluted with paraffin oil into differential concentrations, the lure effect on males was better at 100, 500, and 800 μL d-limonene mL −1 than pure d-limonene (1000 μL mL −1 ). The relative male lure rate of d-limonene at 100 μL mL −1 was 85.88%, which was significantly higher than that of food−baits (14.12%) on day 3. However, d-limonene was unattractive to female and male Bactrocera dorsalis and Zeugodacus tau . Further kinetic analysis showed that female adults released d-limonene around 15-day post eclosion. Electroantennography 1 results showed that 500 μL mL −1 d-limonene evoked the strongest responses to antennae of 10- to 25-day-old male flies. CONCLUSION Our results indicated that d-limonene could be a sex pheromone from female flies of B. minax , and it could be used as a male-specific sex attractant for B. minax. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Chemobiocatalytic transformation of biomass-derived D-xylose into furfuryl alcohol in a sustainable reaction system

Linsong Yang,Yuting Liu,Yu Peng,Yu-Cai He,Cuiluan Ma

The feasibility of chemobiocatalytic production of furfuryl alcohol from biomass-derived D -xylose was investigated using a tandem catalysis with deep eutectic solvent betaine:benzenesulfonic acid (DES BE:BA) and recombinant Escherichia coli DCF cell. The DES BE:BA (2.5 wt%) was applied to catalyze D -xylose under 170 °C for 0.5 h, resulting in a furfural yield of 51.1%. Consequently, recombinant Escherichia coli DCF fully transformed D -xylose-derived furfural to furfuryl alcohol in DES BE:BA-water under pH 7.5 and 40 °C using HCOONa as cosubstrate. This eco-friendly chemobiocatalytic strategy was successfully applied for transforming D -xylose to furfuryl alcohol in DES BE:BA-water.

π-d conjugation regulates the cathode/electrolyte interface in all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries

Surong Zheng,Shiwei Yu,Zaka Ullah,Lei Liu,Ledi Chen,Houliang Sun,Mingliang Chen,Liwei Liu,Qi Li

All-solid-state lithium-ion batteries have great scope in the development of advanced secondary batteries owing to their high energy density and nonflammability. However, high contact resistance at the solid/solid (electrode/electrolyte) interface and the possible existence of side reactions limit their large-scale applications. In this study, a π-d conjugated coordination structure was established between a cathode and electrolyte: 2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone (DHBQ) was the cathode and polyvinylidene fluoride-based Li0.33La0.557TiO3 (PVDF-LLTO) polymer was the solid-state electrolyte. First-principle calculations and performed experiments showed that CO and O–H groups in DHBQ can be coordinated with La3+ in LLTO, and this π-d conjugate coordination structure strengthens the contact interface between the electrode material and solid electrolyte, which further increases the cycling life and durability of all-solid-state batteries.

Wheat embryo globulin nutrients ameliorate d-galactose and aluminum chloride-induced cognitive impairment in rats

Shuai-Nan Zheng,Long Pan,Ai-Mei Liao,Yin-Chen Hou,Guang-Hai Yu,Xiao-Xiao Li,Yong-Jian Yuan,Yu-Qi Dong,Zi-Shan Zhang,Cui-Zhu Tian,Zeng-Liang Liu,Wen-Jin Lin,Ming Hui,Jian Cao,Ji-Hong Huang

Wheat embryo globulin nutrient (WEGN), with wheat embryo globulin (WEG) as the main functional component, is a nutritional combination that specifically targets memory impairment. In this study, we explored the protective role of WEGN on Alzheimer's disease (AD)-triggered cognitive impairment, neuronal injury, oxidative stress, and acetylcholine system disorder. Specifically, we established an AD model via administration of d -galactose ( d -gal) and Aluminum chloride (AlCl 3 ) for 70 days, then on the 36th day, administered animals in the donepezil and WEGN (300, 600, and 900 mg/kg) groups with drugs by gavage for 35 days. Learning and memory ability of the treated rats was tested using the Morris water maze (MWM) and novel object recognition (NOR) test, while pathological changes and neuronal death in their hippocampus CA1 were detected via HE staining and Nissl staining. Moreover, we determined antioxidant enzymes by measuring levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) in serum, cortex, and hippocampus, whereas changes in the acetylcholine system were determined by evaluating choline acetyltransferase (ChAT), and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activities, as well as choline acetylcholine (Ach) content. Results revealed that rats in the WEGN group exhibited significantly lower escape latency, as well as a significantly higher number of targeted crossings and longer residence times in the target quadrant, relative to those in the model group. Notably, rats in the WEGN group spent more time exploring new objects and exhibited lower damage to their hippocampus neuron, had improved learning and memory activity, as well as reversed histological alterations, relative to those in the model group. Meanwhile, biochemical examinations revealed that rats in the WEGN group had significantly lower MDA levels and AChE activities, but significantly higher GSH, SOD, and ChAT activities, as well as Ach content, relative to those in the model group. Overall, these findings indicate that WEGN exerts protective effects on cognitive impairment, neuronal damage, oxidative stress, and choline function in AD rats treated by d -gal/AlCl 3 .
