In this work, the upconversion luminescence (UCL) and temperature-sensing properties of SrGd 2 O 4 phosphors doped with Er 3+ , Yb 3+ were investigated. The UCL performance was studied by adjusting the doping concentrations of Er 3+ , Yb 3+ . It can be found that the intensity of red UCL is effectively improved by doping Yb 3+ ions. The band structures of SrGd 2 O 4 , SrGd 2 O 4 :5 mol%Er 3+ , and SrGd 2 O 4 :5 mol%Er 3+ ,15 mol%Yb 3+ were calculated using the density functional theory (DFT) to verify the experimental results. The thermal sensitivity of SrGd 2 O 4 :5 mol%Er 3+ ,15 mol%Yb 3+ phosphors was studied using the novel fluorescence intensity ratio of non-thermally coupled energy levels (NTCL-FIR) technique based on the 2 H 11/2 and 4 F 9/2 energy levels. The analytical results reveal that the maximum values of S r are 1.69%/K (300 K), 1.18%/K (300 K) and 1.47%/K (300 K) respectively under 915, 980 and 1550 nm excitations. The S r values of novel NTCL-FIR are compared with that of thermal coupling of energy level (TCL) and other studies in the same field. The results show that the thermometry sensitivity of red-emitting UCL materials can be enhanced by using the novel NTCL-FIR technique. In addition, the intense red UCL of SrGd 2 O 4 :Er 3+ ,Yb 3+ phosphors have the advantage of deeply penetrating biological tissues. Therefore, the combination of novel NTCL-FIR and red-emitting SrGd 2 O 4 :Er 3+ ,Yb 3+ phosphors could be conducive to temperature monitoring in vivo .

Fluorescence/luminescence bioimaging, utilizing rare-earth doped nanocrystals (RENCs) within the NIR-IIb (1500–1700 nm) sub-window, has drawn interest for its deep penetration depth and superior resolution. Herein, Er 3+ /Yb 3+ couple is rationally designed in topologically arranged RENCs that facilitate a boosted 1530 nm emission of Er 3+ via premeditated Yb 3+ -mediated energy transfer processes under 808 nm excitation. To maximize this modulation effect for boosting 1530 nm emission, a regional active ions concentration and spatial regulation strategy is explored in the optimized concentration and core–shell–shell structure (NaErF 4 :20%Yb@NaYbF 4 :20%Er@NaYF 4 with a quantum yield of 16.46% in NIR-IIb region). Leveraging the superior emission and multi-wavelength excitation characteristics of the as-obtained nanocrystals, a NIR-IIb-based ratiometric fluorescence imaging measurement is achieved under 808 and 980 nm excitation, which cannot only show the 2D distribution of probes but also provide spatial depth information (range from 0 to 2.8 mm with a tissue depth resolution of 66 µm). The findings hold significant potential for advancing both vascular science and clinical medicine.

Glass forming regions of Al 2 O 3 -CaO-SrO (AlCaSr) system were systematically studied and clearly depicted by a combination of thermodynamic calculation method and traditional melt-quenching experiments. The glass forming region was first found with a composition range of Al 2 O 3 : 12–32 mol%, CaO: 43–68 mol%, and SrO: 20–36 mol%. Moreover, two representative glass compositions, 26.6Al 2 O 3 -49.4CaO-24SrO (AlCaSr-1) and 17.48Al 2 O 3 -58.52CaO-24SrO (AlCaSr-2), in central part of the experimental glass forming region and the corresponding glass doped with 1 mol% Er 2 O 3 , i.e., AlCaSr-1-Er and AlCaSr-2-Er, were selected and carefully prepared in our lab. Detailed investigations proved that the AlCaSr glasses had excellent comprehensive properties with high T g temperature (∼ 800 °C), wide transparency wavelength range (0.3–6 μm), and low maximum phonon energy (∼ 770 cm −1 ), and good 2.7 μm mid-infrared emitting properties via doping Er 3+ activators. These results highlight the potential application of AlCaSr glasses as infrared materials, and could benefit the development of high-performance infrared glasses.

To further enhance the photocatalytic performance of BiOCl, a facile hydrothermal reduction reaction was used to synthesize the reduced graphene oxide- (rGO-) modified ternary compound photocatalyst β-NaYF 4 :Yb 3+ , Er 3+ @BiOCl-rGO (NYF–Bi-rGO). rGO prepared using a hydrothermal method showed good conductivity . Furthermore, the specific surface area of NYF-Bi-rGO was 20-fold larger than that of NYF, which is a quality that could prove highly advantageous for use in pollutant adsorption. In addition, the ternary photocatalytic system produced by rGO increased the absorption intensity of NYF-Bi in the visible light region, and caused a red-shift of the entire absorption cross-section. In particular, analysis of carrier migration showed the introduction of rGO promoted the separation of the photoelectron-hole pairs of BiOCl, inhibited its recombination and improved the photocatalytic efficiency of the ternary photocatalyst NYF-Bi-rGO.

A novel composite double-layer film was developed using TiO 2 /La(OH) 3 :Yb 3+ /Er 3+ nanoparticles (P25/UC) and porous-hollow TiO 2 microspheres (PHTS) for highly efficient dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). P25/UC was used as the first layer and coated onto fluorine-doped tin oxide glass substrate to create a good contact and upconversion effect. The P25/UC layer can absorb and convert infrared light into visible red and green light, increasing light utilization. PHTS has a large size and a high specific surface area, was deposited onto the surface of the P25/UC film to improve the light scattering performance and dye adsorption of solar cells. The P25/UC composite double-layer film (P25/UC + PHTS) achieved the highest short-circuit current density of 20.33 mA/cm 2 and photoelectron conversion efficiency of 8.89% due to the synergistic effect of the upconversion layers and light-scattering layers, which increased by 51.26% and 38.04% compared with that of the pure P25 film photoelectrode.

Lead-free double perovskites (DPs) are emerging as sustainable luminescent materials owing to their low-cost synthesis, low toxicity, and superior stability. However, their practical applications are impeded by low luminescence efficiency and a single emission center. To overcome these challenges, we reported a structure-modulation strategy to develop Sb/Er: Cs 2 Na 0 . 95 Ag 0 . 05 YbCl 6 (Sb/Er: CNAYC) DPs by co-doping Cs 2 NaYbCl 6 with Sb 3+ /Er 3+ ions and substituting Na + with Ag + ions. The Sb 3+ /Er 3+ co-doping can introduce multiple emission centers from visible to near-infrared (NIR). Meanwhile, the Na + -Ag + alloying-induced lattice distortion not only enhances the photoluminescence efficiency by breaking the parity-forbidden transitions, but also enables the color of emission to be tuned to the white light range. The Sb/Er: CNAYC DPs simultaneously deliver efficient blue (460 nm@Sb 3+ ), green/red (552/667 nm@ Er 3+ ) and NIR (980/1540 nm@Yb 3+ /Er 3+ ) emissions, providing a promising luminescent material for single-component white/NIR LEDs. Furthermore, the Sb/Er: CNAYC DPs also display pronounced temperature-sensitive fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) and lifetime characteristics, enabling them well-suited for dual-mode temperature sensing. This study is expected to establish a universal lattice-modulation strategy that yields single-component luminescent materials exhibiting both high-efficiency white/NIR emission and accurate multimode thermometry for next-generation optoelectronic applications.

In this study, a highly sensitive fluorescence temperature sensing strategy accompanied by color change, based on thermal population and non-radiative transition, has been developed. To enhance the temperature sensitivity in high-temperature regions and to observe significant color changes with the naked eye, the fluorescence spectrum based on thermal population and non-radiative transition has been discussed and designed. The co-doped YVO 4 :Tm 3+ /Er 3+ luminescent material was prepared by the high-temperature solid-phase method. Utilizing the strong absorption of ultraviolet (UV) by the V-O charge transfer band, the material was excited with 310 nm UV light. A significant color change from blue to blue-green and finally to green was achieved in the luminescent material within the temperature range of 450 K. The two fluorescence intensity ratios ( FIR ) were analyzed. In the high-temperature region, the FIR from the non-thermal coupling levels 1 G 4 and 2 H 11/2 satisfy the Boltzmann distribution. The relative sensitivity ( S r ) reached its maximum at 593 K, with a maximum value of 1.74% K − 1 . Temperature uncertainty was analyzed, and CIE chromaticity coordinates were obtained for various temperatures. This strategy increased the sensitivity by 8.5 times at 593 K compared to the thermal coupling level temperature measurement strategy. A color transition recognizable by the naked eye was achieved within the 450 K range, demonstrating thermal anti-behavior, providing a reference for enhancing relative sensitivity in high-temperature regions.

Upconversion luminescent materials can convert near-infrared excitation into higher-energy emissions, showing great potential in applications such as temperature sensing and optical anti-counterfeiting. However, it remains challenging to simultaneously achieve high thermal stability, sensitive temperature response, and circularly polarized luminescence within a single system. In this work, chiral Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 : Yb 3+ /Er 3+ nanosheets were synthesized via a hydrothermal method combined with chiral modification and pH regulation, and their structural and luminescent properties were systematically investigated. The results indicate that pH regulation during precursor synthesis facilitates the optimization of the Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 morphology and improves its crystallinity, thereby promoting a more ordered crystal growth process. Subsequently, chiral induction introduces local lattice distortion while suppressing defect formation. The synergistic effect of both helps to significantly enhance upconversion luminescence performance. Under variable-temperature conditions, the 849 nm near-infrared emission ( 4 I 9/2 - 4 I 15/2 ) exhibits negligible thermal quenching over the temperature range of 293−533 K, in sharp contrast to the thermally quenched behavior of visible emissions. Based on this feature, a fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) thermometry strategy was established, achieving high sensitivity with an absolute sensitivity ( S a ) of 20.73%/K and a relative sensitivity ( S r ) of 3.45%/K. Furthermore, the material exhibits pronounced emission intensity differences under circularly polarized excitation and detection. This enables the construction of a polarization-color synergistically tunable luminescent anti-counterfeiting system. This work provides a new strategy for designing multifunctional upconversion materials that integrate optical thermometry and polarization-based anti-counterfeiting capabilities.

Constructing full spectrum photocatalyst is an effective strategy to improve the conversion efficiency of solar energy. In this work, BiOI:Yb 3+ ,Er 3+ /Bi 2 O 4 (BYE/BO) direct Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts were successfully synthesized by a fast and simple microwave-assisted hydrothermal method . XRD , XPS , FE-SEM, TEM , PL , DRS, and BET were used to investigate the physical and chemical properties of samples. Compared to pure BYE and BO, as-synthesized BYE/BO samples had significantly improved photocatalytic activity in the degradation of Ciprofloxacin and Rhodamine B when exposed to visible or near infrared light (NIR) light. Among them, 20% -BYE/BO has the best photocatalytic activity , and its NIR-light degradation ratio of Ciprofloxacin is as high as 66 and 103 times that of BO and BYE, respectively. The enhanced photoactivity of as-synthesized BYE/BO heterojunction is attributed to synergistic effects of the upconversion and the direct Z heterojunction . Moreover, capture experiment showed that the·O 2 - and h + were main active species, and the directive Z-scheme mechanism was proposed.

BACKGROUND The recovery and reuse of sonocatalysts are the pivotal issues in the sonocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants. The use of some natural minerals as the carrier is not only beneficial to recycling of sonocatalysts, but also reduces the treatment costs of organic pollutants. Two kinds of hydroxyapatite (HAP), Ox Bone (OB)-HAP and synthesized (Syn)-HAP combine with the Pt-TiO 2 /(Er 3+ :Y 3 Al 5 O 12 @Ta 2 O 5 ) (P-TET) composite, obtaining two Z-scheme sonocatalysts, P-TET/OB-HAP and P-TET/Syn-HAP, respectively. The sonocatalytic activities of the prepared samples are investigated via degradation of prometryn and disinfection of Escherichia coli . RESULTS A series of characterizations showed that the Z-scheme P-TET/(OB or Syn)-HAP sonocatalysts were prepared successfully. To evaluate their sonocatalytic activities, some influencing factors such as ultrasonic irradiation time, inorganic oxidants, used times and trapping agents on the sonocatalytic degradation prometryn were determined. The best degradation ratio (80.31% based on N computing and 85.07% based on S atom computing) of prometryn could be obtained for 10 mmol L −1 K 2 S 2 O 8 , 1.0 g L −1 P-TET/OB-HAP sonocatalyst and 150 min ultrasonic irradiation. The excellent sonocatalytic disinfection ratio (88.65%) of E. coli could also be obtained under 40 min ultrasound irradiation. Moreover, a possible mechanism on sonocatalytic degradation of prometryn was illustrated. CONCLUSION The treated bovine bone HAP was directly used as a carrier to combine with P-TET to construct a novel Z-scheme P-TET/OB-HAP sonocatalyst. The high degradation ratio of prometryn and disinfection ratio of E. coli showed that P-TET/OB-HAP could be a promising sonocatalyst for the degradation of organic pollutants and the disinfection of bacteria. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry

A series of Er3+- and Yb3+-doped K2LaNb5O15 (KLN:xEr3+/Yb3+) up-conversion (UC) submicro-particles have been synthesized for the first time by a simple and low-cost molten salt (MS) approach. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was performed to analyze the phase and structure, and the prepared KLN:xEr3+/Yb3+ samples exhibited a single phase tetragonal tungsten bronze (TTB) structure. The morphologies were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and submicro-rod-like particles were obtained for all samples. Under 980 nm excitation, KLN:xEr3+/Yb3+ emitted bright green and weak red emissions which arose from the intra-4f transitions of Er3+ ions. The UC emission intensities and RR/G (the intensity ratio between red and green emissions) were disclosed to be tightly dependent on the Yb3+ ion concentration, and the involved UC luminescence mechanism was studied. Meanwhile, the slope of log I–log P plots displayed an evident reduction with a Ts (sintering temperature) increase, which was ascribed to the saturation effect coming from the competition between UC processes and linear decay. Furthermore, temperature-dependent UC behavior and temperature sensing properties of KLN:xEr3+/Yb3+ were probed based on the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) technique of UC green emission. The maximum sensor sensitivity (S) of KLN:0.04Er3+/Yb3+ (Ts = 900 °C) and KLN:0.16Er3+/Yb3+ (Ts = 900 °C) was determined to be as high as 10.90 × 10−3 and 12.27 × 10−3 K−1, respectively. We also showed that the particle size has an evident influence on S, which can be qualitatively interpreted by J–O theory. Thermal-cycling measurements were conducted at different temperatures, and good reliability and repeatability were confirmed. In addition, an obvious optical heating effect was also realized and the variation of temperature induced with a laser was about 32 K. These results reveal that KLN:xEr3+/Yb3+ submicroparticles with high sensor sensitivity and an obvious laser-induced thermal effect are suitable for future optical thermometers and optical heaters.

Yb 3+ /Er 3+ co-doped YNbO 4 nanoparticles (NPs) with an average size of 35 nm were prepared via modified molten salt method for the first time. The phase purity, crystal structure, morphologies, and upconversion luminescence (UCL) properties as well as quantum yield and temperature sensing behavior of the as-prepared samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and upconversion luminescence (UCL) spectra, respectively. The XRD Rietveld refinements based on the XRD data were employed to reveal the phase purity and structure of the as-prepared samples. It was confirmed that the optimal doping concentration of Yb 3+ ions in YNbO 4 :Yb 3+ , Er 3+ NPs is around 10 mol%, which has a maximal quantum yield of 0.1%. The temperature sensing behavior of the as-prepared YNbO 4 :Yb 3+ , Er 3+ NPs was studied based on the fluorescent intensity ratio (FIR) technique from two thermal coupled 2 H 11/2 and 4 S 3/2 levels. It was found that the temperature sensitivity was sensitive to the doping concentration of Yb 3+ ions. In addition, the dependence of UCL colors on temperature was observed and the corresponding mechanism was proposed. Therefore, the as-prepared Yb 3+ /Er 3+ co-doped YNbO 4 NPs have double function of optical thermometer and safety sign for the high temperature environment.
