In this study, ionic liquid (IL) supported magnetic dispersive solid-phase microextraction was developed and a systematic investigation was conducted on imidazolium ILs for their extraction performance. This nano-based pretreatment procedure was then applied for the determination of acaricides in fruit juice samples for the first time. A feature of this technique is that the commonly laborious chemical modification of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) was skillfully circumvented. Because of the combination of ILs, dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction, and dispersive MNP solid-phase microextraction, the extraction efficiency can be significantly improved using commercial MNPs. Parameters of the extraction method were investigated by one-factor-at-a-time approach. The optimal experimental conditions were as follows: emulsification for 2 min by sonication with the addition of 50 μL [C 6 MIM][NTf 2 ] in the dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction step and vortexing for 90 s after adding 40 mg spherical barium ferrite nanoparticles (20 nm). The desorption time was 2 min. Good linearity (0.5–500 ng/mL) and detection limits within the range of 0.05–0.53 ng/mL were achieved. The application of the proposed method was demonstrated by the analysis of real fruit juice samples, in which recoveries between 85.1 and 99.6% were obtained.

The fruit of Lycium ruthenicum Murray has been widely used as a precious Chinese herbal medicine. In this study, the major anthocyanin in L. ruthenicum fruit was obtained via an AKTA purifier system with YMC-Pack ODS-A column and identified by mass and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to be petunidin 3- O -[6- O -(4- O -( trans - p -coumaroyl)-α- l -rhamnopyranosyl)-β- d -glucopyranoside]-5- O -[β- d -glucopyranoside] (compound 1 ). Compound 1 exhibited higher scavenging activities against 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid), 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydra-zyl and superoxide radicals than the crude extract of anthocyanins. Moreover, compound 1 was demonstrated to have potential cytoprotective effect on hydrogen peroxide-induced intracellular reactive oxygen damage in neuronlike rat pheochromocytoma line cells by promoting cell proliferation, mitigating lipid peroxidation and regulating endogenous antioxidant enzymes (glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase and catalase).

Fresh D . rubrovolvata and P . impudicus are perishable due to their high water content and strong postharvest respiration, which seriously affect their edible value and economic benefits. Drying performs the crucial role in maintaining the quality of edible fungi and extending their shelf life, while the extraction method after drying is also important to the material composition and functional properties of edible fungi. According to the color difference and texture indicators, 45 °C was found to be the optimal temperature choice for both hot-air and vacuum drying. In addition, polysaccharide content in the extract of dried D . rubrovolvata was higher than that of P . impudicus, while the polyphenol abundance in the extract of dried P . impudicus was better than that of D . rubrovolvata. Hot water extraction or thermal ultrasonic treatment was beneficial for the antioxidant activity in D . rubrovolvata and P . impudicus extracts. Based on the correlation analysis, it was showed that polyphenols contributed significantly more to the antioxidant capacity of D . rubrovolvata and P . impudicus, especially P . impudicus, than that of polysaccharides. The related results provided new insights into the improvement of product quality and the development of functional products for D . rubrovolvata and P . impudicus.

The essential oil and β -cyclodextrin inclusion complex was able to inhibit the growth of Penicillium digitatum , a damaging pathogen that causes green mold in citrus fruit. In this study, cinnamaldehyde- β -cyclodextrin inclusion complex ( β -CDCA) for controlling citrus green mold was synthesized by the co-precipitation method. Characterization of β -CDCA revealed that the aromatic ring skeleton of cinnamaldehyde (CA) was successfully embedded into the cavity of β -CD to form the inclusion complex. β -CDCA inhibited P. digitatum at a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) of 4.0 g/L. FT-IR spectroscopy analysis, calcofluor white staining, extracellular alkaline phosphatase (AKP) activity and propidium iodide (PI) staining of hyphae morphology showed that β -CDCA may damage the cell ultrastructure and membrane permeability of P. digitatum . The study further demonstrated that hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), malondialdehyde (MDA), and reactive oxygen species (ROS) markedly accumulated in 1/2 MIC β -CDCA treated hyphae. This implied that β -CDCA inhibited growth of P. digitatum by the triggering oxidative stress, which may have caused cell death by altering cell membrane permeability. In addition, in vivo results showed that β -CDCA alone or combined with L -phenylalanine (L-PHe) displayed a comparable level to that of prochloraz. Therefore, β -CDCA combined with L-PHe can thus be used as an eco-friendly preservative for the control green mold in postharvest citrus fruit.

The fruit (aril) of the endangered genus Taxus plants is an abandoned herbal resource. Traditionally, people enthusiastically focus on its bark, its renewable, tremendous arils fall into the soil with seeds after they are mature. The present research investigated the fruit of two species from the genus Taxus , Taxus chinensis var. mairei , and Taxus media , with regards to their antioxidant and antihyperglycaemic activities, safety, and bioactive constituents. Results showed that T . chinensis var. mairei and T . media both had certain biological activities with T . chinensis var. mairei better in antioxidant activity and T . media better in antihyperglycaemic activity. Correlation analysis revealed that the differences in bioactivities depended on content of their mainly chemical components. The mice acute oral toxicity test indicated that the methanol extracts of the two biotypes of Taxus were safe. And nineteen compounds were tentatively assigned from the two varieties, via tandem mass spectrometry using a LC-ESI-Q-TOF-MS instrument, which included phenols, flavonoids, and terpenes. These results indicate a possible application of Taxus fruit extracts in various fields like in food industry, however, this still needs further investigations. Graphical

Passion fruit peel is a food by-product containing a large amount of cellulose. This study investigated the effect of extracted cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) from passion fruit peel on the properties of electrospun zein/poly (ethylene oxide) (OZP) nanofibrous films loaded with oregano essential oil (OEO). These nanofibrous films were active packaging for pork preservation, in which OEO was the antimicrobial substance, while zein and PEO were film matrix with electrospinnability and film-forming property. The newly sourced CNC had a rigid rod-like structure with a high aspect ratio (27.9), which indicated that CNC from passion fruit peel could reinforce the better properties of materials than the near-spherical CNC from other sources. CNC had the higher crystallinity (64.87 %) compared with that of passion fruit peel powder (PP, 27.31 %) and cellulose powder from peel (PPC, 48.83 %). After the addition of CNC to OZP films, the average diameter of the electrospun fibers increased, which also led to a decrease in porosity. Furthermore, CNC addition improved the embedding ratio of OEO and retarded its release from the electrospun nanofibrous films. In addition, OZP films incorporating CNC (C-OZP) exhibited a higher tensile strength and water vapor barrier because hydrogen bonding formed by CNC and films matrix provided nanofibrous films with a higher crystallinity. The 3 % C-OZP suppressed the increasing trend of TVB-N and TVC of chilled pork during storage and prolonged the shelf-life of pork from 5 to 7 d. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that CNC from passion fruit peel can enhance the properties of OZP electrospun nanofibrous films, which had the significant potential as an active food packaging material.

Conventional antibiotic treatment struggles to eliminate biofilms in wounds due to the formation compact barrier. Herein, we fabricate magnetic pandanus fruit-like nanorobots (NRs) that function as drug carriers while exhibit excellent maneuverability for enhanced antibacterial tasks. Specifically, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) is self-assembled on the surface of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles , loaded with a small quantity of ciprofloxacin , and covered with a layer of polydopamine (PDA). Energized by external magnetic fields , the NRs (F@Z/C/P) are steered in defined direction to penetrate the infection tissues, and effectively arrive targeted areas for pH stimulated drug release and near-infrared triggered phototherapy, contributing to an antibacterial rate of >99.9 %. The Zn 2+ in ZIF-8 and the catechol group in PDA form catechol-ZIF-8-drug structures, which effectively reduce drug release by 11 % in high pH environments and promote rapid drug release by 14 % in low pH environments compared to NRs without PDA. Additionally, F@Z/C/P can remove the biofilms and bacteria in Staphylococcus aureus infected wounds, and eventually be discharged from the infected site after treatment, leading to faster healing with an intact epidermis and minimal harm to surrounding tissues and organs. The study provides a promising strategy for tackling biofilm-associated infections in vivo through the use of multi-functional NRs.

In this study, we inserted a dynamic chemical reaction system that can generate CO 2 into Janus hydrogel (JH) to develop a multidimensional preservation platform that integrates hygroscopicity, antibacterial activity, and modified atmospheric capacity. The double gel system developed using sodium alginate/trehalose at a 1:1 ratio effectively encapsulated 90% of citric acid . Furthermore, CO 2 loss was avoided by separately embedding NaHCO 3 /cinnamon essential oil and citric acid microcapsules into a gelatin pad to develop JH. Freeze-dried JH exhibited a porous and asymmetric structure, very strongly absorbing moisture, conducting water, and rapidly releasing CO 2 and essential oils. Furthermore, when preserving various fruits and vegetables in practical settings, JH provided several preservation effects, including color protection, microbial inhibition, and antioxidant properties. Our study findings broaden the application of JH technology for developing chemical reaction systems, with the resulting JH holding substantial promise for cold chain logistics.

Choerospondias axillaris fruit has attracted more and more attention due to its various pharmacological activities, which are rich in polysaccharides. This study investigated the in vitro saliva-gastrointestinal digestion and fecal fermentation behaviors of polysaccharides from Choerospondias axillaris fruit (CAP), as well as its impact on human gut microbiota. The results showed that CAP could be partially degraded during the gastrointestinal digestion. The FT-IR spectra of the digested CAP didn't change significantly, however, the morphological feature of SEM changed to disordered flocculent and rod-like structures. 16S rRNA sequencing analysis found that after in vitro fermentation, CAP could increase the relative abundances of beneficial bacteria including Megasphaera , Megamonas and Bifidobacterium to produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), while it can also reduce the abundances of harmful bacteria of Collinsella , Gemmiger , Klebsiella and Citrobacter , suggesting that CAP could modulate the composition and abundance of gut microbiota. These results implied that CAP can be developed as a potential prebiotic in the future.

The impact of gum arabic (GA) (10 and 15% w/v) on the quality and postharvest-shelf life of strawberry at storage condition of 4 ± 1°C for 10 days were evaluated. Significant ( p < .05) differences were found for the overall 15% GA-coating as compared with the control. The application of GA-coatings maintained the total contents of phenolic, anthocyanin and total soluble solid (TSS) but significantly ( p < .05) retarded the increase in polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity, reduced weight loss, and completely inhibited fungal infections. Moreover, the 15% GA edible coating retained the color, improved the firmness, and increased antioxidant activity compared with control. Likewise, sensory analysis results also showed the effectiveness of 15% GA-coating by retaining the quality of strawberry fruits. The results show that 15% of GA-coating can be an effective strategy for enhancing the quality of strawberry fruits during cold storage without any negative effect. Practical applications The edible coating has demonstrated to be a promising food preservation method and is progressively used for the commercial processing of many fruits and vegetables. However, gum arabic has not been used for preserving the quality of highly perishable fruit such as strawberries. The result suggests that gum arabic coatings can be a valuable biochemical means of preserving strawberries during refrigerated storage and could be used as an alternative to the synthetic formulas of fruit and vegetable packaging. Thus, gum arabic coating could provide horticultural and food processors a useful way to improve the quality, prolong shelf life, and marketing strategy.

Photoionization-ion trap mass spectrometry (PI-ITMS) is one of the major directions of mass spectrometer miniaturization because of its great potential for rapid on-site VOCs detection in many cases. Traditionally, PI has always been investigated separately and is restrained by ion transmission structure, so a new structure needs to be designed and investigated for simplifying and improving the ion transmission efficiency. Interestingly, our preliminary experiments found that the signal intensity and mass range can be effectively improved by combing atmospheric pressure photoionization (APPI) and low-pressure photoionization (LPPI). Therefore, in this paper, a new dual photoionization - ion trap mass spectrometry (DPI-ITMS) was developed, explored and used to directly analyze complex VOCs. Compared with traditional single PI configuration, it presents two obvious merits: (1) simplified ion transmission structure, eliminating the need to use deflection electrode to repel ions and avoiding breakdown risk. (2) some missing/weak low m / z ion mass spectral peaks in APPI and some high m / z ion mass spectral peaks in LPPI were improved in DPI detection mode. In addition, by combining multivariate statistical analysis, we preliminary achieved in differentiating fruit types and maturity level. In summary, we concluded that the developed DPI-ITMS has moderate detection sensitivity (limited by the homemade ITMS, 0.1–1 ppmv with RSD of 6.36 %), and the DPI-ITMS configuration can be referenced by future PI-MS, and this study also provides a high-throughput, simple, noninvasive and no chemical contamination solution for analyzing main VOCs in fruit aroma.

Pitaya ( Hylocereus undatus ) fruit is susceptible to pathogens that induce fruit decay after harvest. Cuticular waxes covering the outermost plant surfaces are the first site of plant-environment interactions; however, their changes in response to fruit decay are under-researched. Herein, the surface microstructures and chemical composition of wax on pitayas, as well as their changes in response to fruit decay, were comparatively studied. The varieties ‘Baishuijing’ (BSJ) and ‘Hongshuijing’ (HSJ) were examined after harvest. The fruit appearance, morphology, and wax composition differed between cultivars. The surface of both pitaya cultivars was smooth, although traces of granules and a thicker lipid layer were observed using histochemical staining in HSJ than in BSJ, as well as a higher cuticular wax content. Fruit decay rate increased rapidly in both cultivars under room storage conditions, and greater sensitivity to pathogens was found in BSJ than HSJ. As well as the occurrence of fruit decay, the total wax coverage, very-long-chain primary alcohols, aldehydes, fatty acids, and triterpenoids decreased in BSJ, while remaining relatively stable in HSJ. Correspondingly, the relative gene expression levels of HuKCS11 (−1, 2, and 3) , HuKCS17 , and HuKCS19 (for the elongation of very-long-chain fatty acids), HuCER1 (for aldehydes or n -alkanes), HuFAR (−1 and 2) (for primary alcohols), HuBAS1 (−1, 3, and 4) (for β-amyrin), and HuLUS1 (for lupeol) were considerably modified following fruit senescence during storage. The difference in surface topography and wax accumulation between cultivars might have affected pathogen susceptibility after harvest. These results may help when choosing varieties of pitaya based on surface characteristics and cuticular chemicals. They may also help to optimize strategies for postharvest preservation and storage.
