I/N co-doped carbonized polymer dot nanozyme was synthesized using DTA, PEI and RhB as precursors. • The DAP CPDs exhibited exceptional peroxidase-like activity, fluorescence property and specific recognition of Hg 2+ . • A portable smartphone-assisted paper-based colorimetric sensing platform for on-site visual detection of Hg 2+ was constructed. • The proposed sensing platform has simplicity, portability, and potential versatility. Mercury ion (Hg 2+ ) pollution poses a serious threat to ecosystems and human health owing to its high toxicity, environmental persistence, and bioaccumulative nature. The development of rapid, cost-effective, on-site visual detection methods for Hg 2+ is paramount but challenging. In this work, we developed a novel iodine/nitrogen co-doped carbonized polymer dots nanozyme (DAP CPDs) via a simple hydrothermal method, which exhibits excellent peroxidase-like activity. Based on the specific inhibitory effect of Hg 2+ on the enzymatic activity of DAP CPDs, a solution-based colorimetric sensor was constructed for the rapid and sensitive visual detection of Hg 2+ , achieving a detection limit of 13.21 nM. Furthermore, A smartphone-assisted, portable paper-based sensing platform was developed by integrating smartphones with paper devices, enabling rapid, cost-efficient, convenient and on-site visual analysis of Hg 2+ in real water samples. This work not only offers insights into the design of high-performance carbonized polymer dot nanozymes, but also presents a practical and portable tool for the on-site monitoring of heavy metal ions in the environment. Au@AuAg yolk-shell heterogeneous nanostructures (YSHNSs) with two major plasmonic absorption peaks of equal intensity are designed as multifunctional and multi-informational nanoprobes for detecting Cu 2+ and Hg 2+ , which are critical heavy metals threatening food safety and human health. By controlling the elemental distribution and morphological structure of Au@AuAg YSHNSs, two major absorption peaks can be accurately modulated. Since changing the thickness and composition ratio of Au@Ag alloy shell triggers a seesaw-like bidirectional conversion of two major absorption peaks, we establish the detection of Cu 2+ and Hg 2+ . The decrease and increase of intensity ratio of dual-peak show a good linear relationship with the concentration of Cu 2+ and Hg 2+ , with detection limits of 0.4 nM and 2 nM, respectively. This plasmonic nanoprobe based on Au@AuAg YSHNSs is successfully utilized for detecting Cu 2+ and Hg 2+ in various drinking water, providing a reliable solution for screening heavy metals with high specificity and sensitivity.

The sensitive and reliable detection of Hg 2+ and CN − as harsh environmental contaminants are of great importance. In view of this, a novel ‘on–off–on’ fluorescent probe based on nitrogen-rich silicon quantum dots (NR-SiQDs) has been designed for sensitive detection of Hg 2+ and CN − ions in aqueous medium. NR-SiQDs were synthesized using a facile, one-step, and environment friendly procedure in the presence of 3-aminopropyl trimethoxysilane (APTMS) and ascorbic acid (AA) as precursors, with l -asparagine as a nitrogen source for surface modification. The NR-SiQDs exhibited strong fluorescence emission at 450 nm with 42.34% quantum yield, satisfactory salt tolerance, and superior photostability and pH stability. The fluorescence emission was effectively quenched using Hg 2+ (turn-off) due to the formation of a nonfluorescent stable NR-SiQDs/Hg 2+ complex, whereas after the addition of cyanide ions (CN − ), Hg 2+ ions could be leached from the surface of the NR-SiQDs and the fluorescence emission intensity of the quenched NR-SiQDs fully recovered (turn-on) due to the formation of highly stable [Hg(CN) 4 ] 2− species. After optimizing the response conditions, the obtained limits of detection were found to be 53 nM and 0.46 μM for Hg 2+ and CN − , respectively. Finally, the NR-SiQD-based fluorescence probe was utilized to detect Hg 2+ and CN − ions in water samples and satisfactory results were obtained, suggesting its potential application for environmental monitoring.

Mercury (Hg) biogeochemical cycling involves redox transformations between Hg(0) and Hg(II), likely via a mercurous Hg(I) intermediate. Despite previously thought metastable, Hg(I) was found to exist stably in natural waters; yet, the redox behavior governing Hg(I) occurrence remains elusively studied. Here, we simulated an environmental Eh gradient (0.219–0.600 V, vs SHE) using noninterfering 1,4-benzoquinone and 1,4-hydroquinone as redox mediators, and demonstrate that Hg(I) redox transformations are strongly Eh-dependent. Hg(I) was stable at 0.302–0.339 V, contrasting significant oxidation (19–98%) at 0.369–0.600 V or reduction (81%) at 0.219–0.255 V. Speciation analysis and thermodynamic calculations confirm that varying proton level alters Hg(II) species abundance (HgHPO4, HgPO4–, and Hg(OH)2), driving this Eh-dependence. Specifically, HgHPO4/HgPO4– exhibits lower reduction potentials (to Hg(I), as Hg2(OH)2) than Hg(OH)2. Consequently, Hg(I) is subject to oxidation to HgHPO4/HgPO4– at 0.369–0.440 V (pH 6.0), while Hg(OH)2 preferentially undergoes stepwise reduction to Hg(I) and Hg(0) at 0.236–0.308 V (pH 7.5). Additionally, externally forced Hg(0) removal processes, e.g., purging used in conventional Hg(0) analysis, significantly affect Hg(I) transformations and enhance Hg reduction under reducing conditions, whereas natural degassing has negligible effects. This work provides valuable parameters for Hg redox thermodynamics and important implications for predicting Hg(I) occurrence in aquatic environments.

In this study, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and rhodamine B (RhB) were physically mixed to construct a highly selective and sensitive ratiometric fluorescent sensor (CQDs@RhB) for the quantitative and visual detection of Hg2+. After adding Hg2+, the emission peak of CQDs at 445 nm was quenched and the peak of RhB at 575 nm remained unchanged; the ratio of the two emission peaks had a linear relationship with the Hg2+ concentration. The CQDs@RhB had a detection range of 0–15 µM and the limit of detection (LOD) is 65.93 nM and a color change from blue to pink was visible to the naked eye under ultraviolet light. The study revealed a static quenching mechanism of CQDs@RhB. The established method was successfully applied to the detection of Hg2+ in real water and rice samples with satisfactory results. In addition, a portable fluorescent paper-based sensor platform was developed using computer software assistance. The relationship with Hg2+ concentration was constructed by converting the pictures obtained under ultraviolet light to RGB color mode for visualization and quantitative detection of Hg2+. This study provides a valuable strategy for constructing a rapid detection system for Hg2+ in the field.

In this work, to efficiently eliminate the threat of toxic Cl − and Hg 2+ , a kind of AgRu bimetal mesoporous nanozyme co-stabilized by β-cyclodextrin and graphene oxide (AgRu@β-CD-co-GO) was first developed by a homogeneous redox and assembly method. The mesoporous microstructure and a large number of hydroxyl groups and GO aryl rings endowed AgRu@ β-CD-co-GO with superior peroxidase-mimic performance and enough active spots to adsorb more toxic Cl − and Hg 2+ . Under optimal conditions (pH 4.0, 350 μL 1.5 mM TMB and 200 μL 1.0 M H 2 O 2 and incubated for 30 min at 25 °C), AgRu@ β-CD-co-GO could accelerate the oxidation of colorless 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) into blue oxTMB in the presence of H 2 O 2 . Toxic Cl − or Hg 2+ would exclusively alter its peroxidase-like activity, accompanied with the characteristic UV–vis absorption intensity at 653 nm ( A 653 ) decreased and color changed from blue to colorless. AgRu@ β-CD-co-GO was successfully applied for visual detection of Cl − and Hg 2+ and enriched removal of them after their detection. The detection limits were low to be 3.2 × 10 −10 mol∙L −1 for Hg 2+ and 6.4 × 10 −8 mol/L for Cl − . After detection, more than 94.9% Hg 2+ and 93.8% Cl − could be removed by only a simple filtration. The mechanisms for peroxidase-mimic activity of AgRu@ β-CD-co-GO and its exclusive recognition of Hg 2+ and Cl − were proposed.

In this paper, a nucleic acid dye-enhanced electrochemical biosensor based on a screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) modified with Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) was designed for the detection of Hg2+ in water. AuNPs were modified on the surface of the disposable SPCE through the electrodeposition of HAuCl4. Subsequently, thiolated DNA probes were immobilized on the AuNP-modified electrode surface by Au–S reaction. After Hg2+ was bound with a DNA probe by thymine (T)–Hg2+–thymine (T) mismatch, the DNA probe was folded into a hairpin structure where positively charged GelRed molecules were embedded into the double-stranded part of the hairpin. Thus, the current of [Fe(CN)6]3−/4− increased significantly on account of the decreased electrostatic repulsion at the electrode surface. Under the optimized experimental conditions, the peak current of [Fe(CN)6]3−/4− exhibited a good linear relationship with lgCHg2+ in the concentration of Hg2+ linear range of 0.1 nM to 500 nM, and the limit of detection (S/N = 3) was calculated as 0.04 nM. The electrochemical sensor also exhibited excellent selectivity for Hg2+ in the presence of nine interfering ions, including Na+, Fe3+, Ni2+, Mg2+, Co2+, Pb2+, K+, Al3+ and Cu2+. Meanwhile, the developed electrochemical sensor was tested in the analysis of Hg2+ in tap water and river water samples, and the recoveries ranged from 81.0 to 114%. Therefore, this nucleic acid dye-enhanced electrochemical biosensor provided the advantages of simplicity, sensitivity, and specificity and is expected to be an alternative for Hg2+ detection in actual environmental samples.

A ratiometric sensor of MOF/ CdTe QDs was constructed by physically mixing CdTe QDs ( λ em = 605 nm) with MOF (Fe-MIL-88NH 2, λ em = 425 nm). Under an UV lamp ( λ ex = 365 nm), orange-red CdTe QDs is gradually quenched with increasing levels of Hg 2+ or Cu 2+ , while blue MOF is unchanged, accompanying with a visual change from bright pink to blue fluorescence. Hence, a new method for determining Hg 2+ and Cu 2+ by MOF/CdTe QDs sensor is established, whose detection limits are 0.22 ng mL −1 for Hg 2+ (2.1% RSD) and 0.26 ng mL −1 for Cu 2+ (1.1% RSD), respectively. In addition, on-site, rapid and visual determination of Hg 2+ /Cu 2+ in red wine without any pretreatment is realized by using a MOF/CdTe QDs paper-based sensor. For Hg 2+ and Cu 2+ , the semi-quantitative detection ranges of the paper-based sensor are both 10 ~ 5000 ng mL −1 , implying that it has great application value in analyzing Hg 2+ and Cu 2+ in liquid samples.

In this paper, DMC was prepared via carbonization in nitrogen with plexiglass as the template and sucrose as the carbon source. The hierarchical porous carbon (DHPC) was prepared by treating DMC with potassium hydroxide. The DHPC was loaded on chitosan to prepare DHPC@CS, which was then doped into nanosilver via the one-pot process to prepare DHPC@CS-AgNPs. The morphology of DHPC@CS-AgNPs was characterized using the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and the Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM). In the presence of Hg 2+ , DHPC@CS-AgNPs will catalyze the oxidation of TMB, resulting in an observable change of color, so a rapid, sensitive and highly selective method could be established to detect trace Hg 2+ colorimetric sensors. The conditions of the TMB color reaction, characteristics of the Hg 2+ -DHPC@CS-AgNPs oxidized enzyme mimics and their color reaction characteristics were studied. Under the optimized conditions, coloration could not be catalyzed in the DHPC@CS-AgNPs-TMB system, but with the addition of the mercury ions, the catalytic activity was enhanced and the oxidized enzyme mimic activity was observed. In the Hg 2+ -DHPC@CS-AgNPs-TMB system, when TMB was used as a substrate, K m = 0.0165 mM, and V max = 4.6512 × 10 −8 M·s −1 . Under the optimized conditions, the linear range of mercury ion was determined to be 1 × 10 −8 –1 × 10 −6 mol·L −1 using the above method, the linear relationship was r = 0.99753, the detection limit (S/N = 3) was 7 × 10 −9 mol·L −1 , and the recoveries of spiked water sample and fish sample ranged from 84.4% to 103%.

Nitrogen and phosphorus co-doped carbon dots (NPCDs) were synthesized by a microwave method, using citric acid monohydrate and diammonium hydrogen phosphate as raw materials. The morphology, structures and elemental compositions of NPCDs were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It was found that NPCDs show good selectivity to Hg2+ over other metal ions. And the fluorescence of the NPCDs-Hg2+ system can be recovered in the presence of glutathione (GSH). As such, a “turn-off-on” fluorescence probe can be constructed for the detection of Hg2+ and GSH. Under the optimum working conditions, the linear response of NPCDs to Hg2+ was in the range 0.10–30 μM with a detection limit of 9.9 nM. The linear range of GSH was 0.50–32 μM with a limit of detection of 11.2 nM. The proposed method has been successfully applied to the detection of Hg2+ and GSH in various biological samples. What is more, NPCDs have low cytotoxicity verified by the MTT assay. Using NPCDs as a probe, fluorescence images were obtained for HepG2 cells, which indicated that it could monitor the levels of Hg2+ and GSH in biological systems.

A simple and rapid fluorescence “on-off-on” approach for sensing Hg 2+ and paraquat was designed by using nitrogen doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) and N-GQDs/Hg 2+ system, respectively. It was found that the fluorescence of N-GQDs solution was quenched in the presence of Hg 2+ ions (turn off), and the quenched N-GQDs/Hg 2+ system was recovered after addition of paraquat (turn on), due to the higher affinity of paraquat and Hg 2+ than that of N-GQDs and Hg 2+ that resulting into the release of Hg 2+ from the surface of N-GQDs and the fluorescence recovery of N-GQDs. The developed fluorescence “on-off-on” approach exhibited high selectivity and sensitivity for detection of Hg 2+ and paraquat. Under the optimum experimental conditions, good linearities were achieved over the range of 0–4.31 μM for Hg 2+ and 0.05–2.0 μg mL −1 for paraquat, respectively. The detection limits for Hg 2+ and paraquat were 23 nM and 19 μg L −1 , respectively, and the recoveries of Hg 2+ and paraquat spiked in real samples ranged from 95% to 105.8%. Results of this study suggested that the highly selective and sensitive fluorescence “on-off-on” approach can be used to the detection of Hg 2+ and paraquat in real environmental water samples.

To advocate environment friendly detection idea, we adopted the green chemical method to synthesis the 1-(2 amino ethyl) piperidine functionalized polyacrylonitrile fiber (APF) and the chromogenic fiber 4-(2-pyridylazo) resorcinol (APF-PAR). The APF has high adsorption selectivity of Hg 2+ and Cu 2+ , and the change of structure, surface morphology and thermo-stability before and after adsorption have been characterized by the infrared spectra, scanning electron microscope and thermogravimetric analysis. The APF achieved the adsorption equilibrium of Hg 2+ just in 25 min and the adsorption capacity is 435.1 mg/g, while the adsorption equilibrium of Cu 2+ costs 30 min and the adsorption capacity is 141.7 mg/g. The chromogenic fiber APF-PAR can recognize the Hg 2+ and Cu 2+ in 2 s, which benefits from the rapid mass transfer and small fluid resistance of the chelating PAN fiber. The color changed from orange to purplish red due to the variation of HOMO-LOMO energy gaps during the reaction which confirmed by the UV–vis absorption spectrum. It also has high selectivity and excellent adsorption performance, which provides more convenient, accurate, reliable and faster testing methods of Hg 2+ and Cu 2+ in environmental medium.
