Automated LA-DBD-TLC-MS device for accurate detection of biogenic amines in fishery products coupled with machine learning algorithms

Tiantian Zhang,Haonan Mi,Shichao Wei,Yuan Xu,Zhao Yang,Shuai Liang,Xuelu Ding

A novel, compact, and automated laser ablation dielectric barrier discharge thin layer chromatography-mass spectrometry (LA-DBD-TLC-MS) device was developed for the rapid detection of biogenic amines (BAs) in fishery products. This plug-and-play system integrates thermal desorption via diode laser, DBD plasma ionization, and tandem MS detection, with key operational parameters optimized through experimental and computational methods. Utilizing nanoscale carbon black as a matrix, the device achieved a detection limit of 0.230 pg/mm 2 . It demonstrated comparable efficacy to HPLC-MS/MS in screening six BAs and enabled species discrimination and spoilage assessment in fish with machine learning algorithms (PCA, RF, SVM, MLP), yielding high accuracies. A multi-linear regression model predicted salmon spoilage with a strong correlation (R 2  = 0.974). This study confirms the LA-DBD-TLC-MS device as a reliable, precise, and high throughput tool for rapid BA analysis in fishery products, with potential for direct trace analysis of organic compounds in food matrices.

Chemiresistive detection of H2 at near room temperature by porous In2O3 nanotubes co-sensitized with La-dopant and Pd-modifier

Xuping Li,Yanwei Li,Xingtang Xu,Xiaohua Wang,Guang Sun,Bo Zhang,Yan Wang,Jianliang Cao

Metal oxide semiconductor (MOS)-based hydrogen (H 2 ) sensor that can work at room or near room temperature has attracted an increasing concern owing to its potential application in hydrogen storage and utilization. Herein, a co-sensitization strategy by La doping and Pd decoration is proposed to realize the detection of H 2 at near room temperature (50 °C) on In 2 O 3 porous nanotubes (PNTs). The In 2 O 3 PNTs were prepared via a solvothermal method and then sequentially doped with La 3+ and decorated with Pd nanoparticles via an immersion, freeze-drying and calcination route and a chemical reduction method, respectively. The results of gas-sensing measurements indicated that after a compositional evolution from In 2 O 3 to La-doped In 2 O 3 (La-In 2 O 3 ) and Pd-decorated La-In 2 O 3 (Pd/La-In 2 O 3 ), the fabricated H 2 sensor showed a higher sensitivity at lower operating temperature. At a near room temperature of 50 °C, the response of the best Pd/La-In 2 O 3 sensor to 50 ppm H 2 was as high as 8.34, increasing about 4.85, 1.20 and 1.15 folds compared to the In 2 O 3 (1.72 at 160 °C), La-In 2 O 3 (6.97 at 150 °C) and Pd/In 2 O 3 (7.24 at 80 °C) sensors, respectively. The sensitization effects and mechanism of La dopant and Pd modifier as well as their synergistic effects were discussed in detail.

A novel strategy for constructing mesoporous solid superbase catalysts: bimetallic Al–La oxides supported on SBA-15 modified with KF

Ning Liu,Zhimin Wu,Meng Li,Shanshan Li,Yongfei Li,Rongdong Yu,Langsheng Pan,Yuejin Liu

Bimetallic Al–La oxides were conjointly precoated on SBA-15 prior to the introduction of potassium fluoride to achieve solid superbases at low temperature by a modified wetness impregnation method. This breaks the tradition of decomposition of KNO3 at high temperature and gives rise to a new approach to generating superbasic sites on SBA-15. The physico-chemical characteristics of the prepared KF/Al–La@SBA-15 materials were investigated using FT-IR, XRD, TG-DTG, N2 adsorption–desorption, TEM, SEM-EDS, acid–base titration, Hammett indicators and CO2-TPD measurements. The results demonstrated that the addition of Al species promoted the dispersion behavior of La species inside the channels, and the bimetallic species could synergistically protect the mesoporous structures of SBA-15 against KF corrosion. With increasing Al content, KF/Al–La@SBA-15 exhibited a long-range ordering of the pores with relatively narrow pore size distribution as well as high specific surface area. The research results showed that the KF/Al–La@SBA-15 (0.4) catalyst possessed a total basicity up to 0.79 mmol g−1 and superbasicity with a strength of 26.5. The catalytic activity of the prepared materials was evaluated in the ring-opening reaction of propylene oxide with methanol. Compared with the SBA-15 supported monometallic oxide (Al or La) catalysts, KF/Al–La@SBA-15 (0.4) exhibited the highest catalytic activity for the ring-opening reaction of propylene oxide with methanol. This is associated with the synergistic effects between Al and La species and the high dispersion of active components on the SBA-15 support.

Facilitated electron-hole separation and enhanced uranium(VI) capture via La-doped WO3: Insights into oxygen vacancies and superior recyclability

Chaolong Liu,Keng Xuan,Yaoping Guo,Hao Jiang,Wenjie Ma,Xuegang Wang,Zhongkui Zhou,Jun Li,Yadan Guo

WO 3 -based materials are theoretically promising photocatalysts for uranium(VI) removal due to their stability and narrow bandgap (∼2.8 eV), but they are limited by a lack of adsorption sites and a tendency for photogenerated electron-hole pairs to recombine. Herein, La-doped WO 3 (W 0.9 La 0.1 O 3-x ) rich in oxygen vacancies (OVs) was prepared via a facile hydrothermal method. La doping and the introduction of OVs provided abundant active sites, optimized the band structure, increased electron density, and inhibited electron-hole pair recombination of W 0.9 La 0.1 O 3-x , which resulted in a maximum U(VI) extraction capacity of up to 1199.73 mg/g through synergistic adsorption-photocatalytic reduction processes. Interestingly, W 0.9 La 0.1 O 3-x demonstrated excellent stability and increased recyclability, superior to that of most reported adsorbents and photocatalysts, probably owing to the strong stability of W and La atoms as well as the additional OVs formed from self-reduction of W 0.9 La 0.1 O 3-x during photocatalytic reaction process. Overall, this study expands the application of WO 3 -based materials for U(VI) removal from wastewater and provides valuable theoretical insights and technical guidance for addressing the challenge of balancing removal rate and stability of U(VI) extraction materials.

Effect of limited current on ultrarapid densification and giant dielectric properties of flash sintering (La, Ta) co-doped TiO2 ceramics

Yang Zaizhi,Wang Xi,Zhang Liang,Li Hailing,Zhang Hui,Xu Dong

Flash sintering is considered a promising energy-saving and efficient technology for preparing high-temperature ceramics. The effects of limited current on flash sintering parameters, microstructure, and electrical properties of (La 1/2 , Ta 1/2 ) 0.02 Ti 0.98 O 2 ceramic were investigated by the XRD, SEM, XPS, and precision impedance analyzer. With limiting current increase, the grain size of flash sintering sample increases gradually, and the relative density increases first and then decreases. The average grain size is about 1 μm, and the highest relative density is 96.9%. Joule heating runaway and oxygen vacancy defect lead to rapid densification of flash sintering La and Ta co-doped TiO 2 ceramics. According to the EPDD model, doped La 3+ and Ta 5+ ions increase the concentration of oxygen vacancies and free electrons, lead to local polarization of carriers, and obtain a giant dielectric constant of ε ’  = 7.6 × 10 4 and low dielectric loss of tanδ = 0.11. At high temperature, electrons break free from the constraints of defect clusters and accumulate at the interface, leading to interface polarization due to the IBLC model. The giant dielectric properties originate from the combined effect of EPDD and IBLC model.

Dual-Site Engineering of La/Ti Co-Doped BiFeO3 for Enhanced Visible-Light Photocatalytic Degradation: Synergistic Effects and High Stability

Xiufen Yang,Runzhi Han,LiWei Shi,YiXin Li,Changyong Lan,Leiming Chen,Chuanfu Huang

To address the persistent challenges of wide band gap (2.13   eV), high carrier recombination rates, and poor cycling stability in bismuth ferrite (BiFeO 3 BFO)-based photocatalysts, this study introduces an unprecedented La³⁺/Ti⁴⁺ dual-site doping strategy. La/Ti co-doped BFO nanoparticles (n% BLFTO) were synthesized using a sol-gel method. The synergistic effects of La³⁺-induced gradient oxygen vacancies (increased by 270%) and Ti³⁺/Ti⁴⁺ redox couples led to a significant band gap narrowing to 1.79   eV, extending visible light absorption to 450-700   nm. Remarkably, the optimized 30% BLFTO sample achieved a 98.9% degradation efficiency of Rhodamine B (Rh B) within 120 minutes-7.17% higher than pure BFO and maintained 95.92% efficiency after 12 cycles (2.98% decay), demonstrating exceptional stability rarely reported in prior works. In-situ X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy and Photoluminescence Spectroscopy analyses revealed that dual-doping synergistically modulates carrier dynamics via Fe²⁺/Fe³⁺ mixed valency and abundant oxygen vacancies, thereby prolonging carrier lifetimes and enhancing photocatalytic activity. This work pioneers a dual-doping framework that simultaneously enables highly efficient visible-light-driven degradation of Rh B and exceptional cycling stability, offering new insights for the design of robust photocatalysts for environmental remediation and renewable energy applications.

Fe(II)-induced phase transformation of La-substituted ferrihydrite significantly influences the reduction and immobilization of Cr(VI) in soils

Changjin Liang,Honghai Wu,Yaowei Li,Yufeng Guan

Ferrihydrite (Fh) can usually transform into phases with higher crystallinities. This may greatly alter Fh adsorption capacity for chromium ions, thereby affecting their immobilizations and fates. Foreign elements [e.g., lanthanum (La)] as impurities can become incorporated into Fh. Herein, the effect of La-substitution into Fh and the influence of the presence of Cr(VI) on Fh phase transformation and fate of Cr(VI) were investigated. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Electro-chemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and other test methods were employed to probe phase changes after the Fe(II)-induced La-substituted Fh (La-Fh) transformations. At pH 5.5, no neoformed phase was observed until 7 d for La-Fh or pure Fh at 1 mM Fe(II) aq, but all La-Fh systems underwent transformations at 5 mM Fe(II)aq. A low pH and Fe(II)aq level favored lepidocrocite (Lp) to form, whereas goethite (Gt) was the predominant phase rather than Lp as pH increased to 7.2 with higher level Fe(II)aq. However, the La-substitution inhibits the La-Fh transformation rate and path. This made 5 % La-Fh transformed to Lp after 30 d at pH 7.2 and 1 mM Fe(II)aq. The La-release was present to some extent during the transformation process. Either the inhibition to La-Fh transformation or the La-slow release favors the retention of early-adsorbed Cr(VI) on iron-mineral surface. The added Cr(VI) might promote the La-Fh transformation even under a lower-level Fe(II), primarily attributed to the rapid reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) by Fe(II), which produced more liable Fe(III) in addition to the Cr(III) that can improve the mineral conductivity, thereby enhancing the La-Fh transformation. Mechanisms responsible for the Fe(II)-induced La-Fh transformation companying the La slow-release are proposed to provide insights into the reduction and immobilization of Cr(VI) under anaerobic conditions, thus demonstrating that La-Fh is a promising material for application in Cr-contaminated site remediation.

Preparation of Ti/SnO2-Sb2O4-La Electrode with TiO2 Nanotubes Intermediate Layer and the Electrochemical Oxidation Performance of Rhodamine B

Yuanzhen He,Dengjie Zhong,Yunlan Xu,Ran Jiang,Jiayou Zhang,Pengfei Liao

A La-doped Ti/SnO2-Sb2O4 electrode with TiO2-NTs intermediate layer (Ti/TiO2-NTs/SnO2-Sb2O4-La) was created via the electrodeposition technique. The physicochemical and electrochemical properties of the electrode were analyzed through FESEM, XRD, XPS, CV, and LSV electrochemical tests. The results showed that TiO2-NTs were tightly packed on the surface of Ti substrate, thus improving the binding force of the SnO2-Sb2O4-La coating, offering greater specific surface area, more active spots, higher current response, and longer lifespan for the degradation of rhodamine B. The lifespan of the Ti/TiO2-NTs/SnO2-Sb2O4-La electrode reached 200 min (1000 mA cm–2, 1 M H2SO4), while the actual service life was up to 3699 h. Under the conditions of initial pH 3.0, Na2SO4 concentration of 0.1 M, current density of 30 mA cm–2, and initial rhodamine B concentration of 20 mg L–1, the color and TOC removal rate of rhodamine B reached 100% and 86.13% within 15 and 30 min, respectively. Rhodamine B was decomposed into acids, esters, and other molecular compounds under the action of •OH and SO4•– free radicals and electrocatalysis, and finally completely mineralized into CO2 and H2O. It is anticipated that this work will yield a novel research concept for producing DSA electrodes with superior catalytic efficacy and elevated stability.

Tailoring the product distribution of n-heptane and shale oil cracking over Fe-La bimetals confined in ZSM-35 zeolite

Xiaodan Zhang,Yongjun Zhang,Hongjing Han,Yanan Zhang,Haiying Wang,Jiayu Zhang,Xinyu Liu,Yanguang Chen

Great progress has been made in the catalytic cracking of shale oil by introducing metals into zeolites for regulating acidity to tailor the distribution of olefin products. However, the interaction between the loaded bimetals and their synergistic effect with the acid sites of the zeolite remains controversial. In this work, catalysts of highly stable Fe-La bimetals confined in ZSM-35 zeolite (Fe-La-ZSM-35) were constructed with appropriate acidic properties. Real shale oil and n -heptane as a representative reactant were chosen to explore the catalytic cracking performance of these materials. The Fe-La species formed metal sites bonded to the zeolitic framework in the confined microenvironment of ZSM-35, which established strong interactions. Comparing Fe-La-ZSM-35 with Fe/La-ZSM-35 synthesized by the impregnation method revealed that the direct doping method could better incorporate La and Fe species within the zeolite, resulting in stronger interactions between the bimetals and framework aluminum to form a large number of medium-strong Lewis acid sites (Fe-OH). The ratio of Brønsted acid sites to Lewis acid sites decreased from 1.56 in Fe/La-ZSM-35 to 0.45 in Fe-La-ZSM-35. Furthermore, the electron cloud density at the active Fe-OH site increased due to electron transfer from La to Fe, which promoted the adsorption of carbocations, improved stabilisation of carbocations and bimolecular reactions were inhibited. And the C 3 -C 4 bonds of n -heptane molecules were more easily attacked due to the weak acidity of these acid sites, resulting in propylene being the main product as the reaction C 7 H 16  → C 4 H 10  + C 3 H 6 was dominant during the catalytic cracking of n -heptane. The propylene yield of Fe-La-ZSM-35 increased to 35.35% compared with La-ZSM-35 (22.62%) and Fe/La-ZSM-35 (26.16%) at 600°C. During three reaction-regeneration cycles, n -heptane conversion and propylene selectivity were as high as 89.33% and 30.85%. For real light shale oil, the catalyst achieved a propylene yield and selectivity of 19.24% and 31.0%, demonstrating excellent feedstock generalizability. In addition, Fe-La-ZSM-35 exhibited excellent stability, indicating considerable potential for use in the catalytic cracking of real oil.

Enhanced phosphate removal by lanthanum functionalization using zirconium-based metal organic frameworks: Role of in situ formed La(OH)3

Suyu Kong,Meili Ding,Mengjiao Yu,Wei Rong,Yang Wang,Jianfeng Yao

Developing high-efficiency adsorbents with sufficient active species to remove phosphate from wastewater is still a significant and formidable challenge. Herein, a metal-ion modification strategy was developed to construct a series of lanthanum (La 3 + )-functionalized zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks containing different functional groups through a one-step solvothermal process. The investigations for the influence of functional groups of ligands on the resulting La species and the role of La(OH) 3 in the phosphate removal are the primary focuses of this research. Unlike the simple La doping in UiO-66, UiO-66-NH 2 and many previously reported MOF systems, La(OH) 3 was in situ formed during the preparation of La-functionalized UiO-66-OH, which was confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction. At room temperature, the optimized 0.5La-UiO-66-OH, with a molar ratio of La 3+ versus the total metal precursor of 0.5, exhibits a desirable adsorption capacity of 219.6 mg g −1 , exceeding those of UiO-66 (146.8 mg g −1 ), UiO-66-OH (158.9 mg g −1 ), and many reported adsorbents. Besides, reusability tests demonstrate that 0.5La-UiO-66-OH can maintain high adsorption performance (96 %) after five cycles and the practical usability of by 0.5La-UiO-66-OH is confirmed using real lake water. In-depth investigations (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy) on mechanism unveiled that the adsorption of phosphate by 0.5La-UiO-66-OH involved a combined process of electrostatic attraction and ligand exchange. This research presents the first regulation of generating active La species within MOFs through subtle modification and provides valuable insights for wastewater treatment.

Na-modified La(CrMnFeCoNi)1/5O3 high entropy perovskite oxides with B-site valence fluctuations for excellent OER performance electrocatalysts

Shibo Wu,Jingrui Cao,Yang Zhou,Jiahao He,Jiangjie Zhou,Muslum Demir,Hongye Yang,Zaizai Tong,Pianpian Ma

High-entropy perovskite oxides, an emerging electrocatalytic electrode material, integrates the distinctive features of high-entropy materials and perovskites, offering significant potential in electrocatalysis. While adjusting the B-site elements has been a widely adopted approach for modulating the electrocatalytic activity of HEPs, there was a notable lack of systematic investigations into the role of A-site ions in regulating their electrocatalytic performance. To overcome this deficiency, in the present study, La 1-x Na x (CrMnFeCoNi) 1/5 O 3 HEPs were synthesized using carbon nanotubes-based sacrificial template method. It was found that the Na substitution at the A-site not only significantly reduced the synthesis temperature but also facilitated the preservation of carbon nanotubes. This retention contributed to the formation of a three-dimensional network structure, exposing a greater number of active sites. The Na modification induced significant valence fluctuations at the B-site and tailored the oxygen vacancy concentrations, enhancing the synergistic "cocktail effect" among the various metal atoms. Furthermore, the introduction of Na stimulated the formation of surface M-OOH species, which serve as active intermediates to enhance OER activity. As a result, the Na-modified HEPs demonstrated exceptional OER performance compared to their parent phases. Among these, La 0.6 Na 0.4 (CrMnFeCoNi) 1/5 O 3 (L6N4-5M) sample exhibited a lower overpotential of 313 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 and a Tafel slope of 47.4 mV dec −1 . Additionally, the A-site Na modification strategy and the in-depth investigation of the OER mechanism provide valuable insights for the future design and development of high-performance HEP electrocatalysts.

Synthesis of ordered mesoporous La2O3-ZrO2 composites with encapsulated Pt NPs and the effect of La-dopping on catalytic activity

Yan Gao,Yiwei Zhang,Yuming Zhou,Chao Zhang,Hongxing Zhang,Shuo Zhao,Jiasheng Fang,Mengqiu Huang,Xiaoli Sheng

In this work, we report a feasible approach to synthesize a ternary nanocomposites , Pt/lanthanum doped mesoporous zirconium oxide (Pt/La 2 O 3 -ZrO 2 ), via an effective two-step method. Ordered mesoporous La 2 O 3 -ZrO 2 composites were firstly fabricated with mesoporous silica KIT-6 as a hard template. Subsequently, uniform Pt nanoparticles encapsulated by 4 hydroxyl-terminated poly (amidoamine) (G4-OH PAMAM) dendrimers were deposited on the La 2 O 3 -ZrO 2 composites. The as-prepared samples were characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM), N 2 adsorption–desorption isotherm analysis, energy dispersion X-ray analysis (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and temperature programmed reduction (H 2 -TPR). The average size of PtDENs was found to be 1.48   nm in diameter. Furthermore, the introduction of La could improve the structure of the supports which was confirmed by XRD and H 2 -TPR analysis. The reduction of p-nitrophenol to p-aminophenol by NaBH 4 was utilized to evaluate the catalytic performances of catalysts. Results indicated that the Pt/La 2 O 3 -ZrO 2 catalyst calcined in nitrogen at 550   °C exhibited the highest catalytic performance and still kept the high catalytic activity even after six cycles. This phenomenon suggests that synergistic effect among Pt-Zr-La could enhance the catalytic efficiency. Finally, reaction mechanism was proposed for the reduction of p-nitrophenol.
