MIL-88A(Al)/chitosan/graphene oxide composite aerogel with hierarchical porosity for enhanced radioactive iodine adsorption

Xinxin Wang,Ruixue Meng,Shiyong Zhao,Zhenyu Jing,Yonghui Jin,Jie Zhang,Qiujiu Du,Xinxin Pi,Long Chen,Yanhui Li

To ensure the sustainable development of the nuclear industry, the effective capture of radioiodine from nuclear wastewater has attracted much attention. Herein, a novel MIL-88A(Al)/chitosan/graphene oxide (MCG) composite aerogel was prepared by using crosslinked chitosan and graphene oxide as the 3D network skeleton, and MIL-88A(Al) nanocrystalline particles were introduced into the skeleton by freeze-drying method. MIL-88A(Al) adsorption capacities for volatile and soluble iodine were 2.02 g g −1 and 850.00 mg g −1 , respectively. Owing to the synergistic effect of MIL-88A(Al), GO, CS, and the hierarchically porous structures of the MCG aerogel, the adsorption capacities for volatile and soluble iodine by the MCG aerogel were increased to 2.62 g g −1 and 1072.60 mg g −1 , respectively. Furthermore, the adsorption performance of the MCG aerogel for volatile and soluble iodine could be maintained at 83 % and 82 % after 5 cycles, suggesting excellent recoverability. Meanwhile, the adsorption mechanism studies showed the interactions between iodine and N H, Al O, and C O in MCG aerogel. Furthermore, the adsorption process is consistent with the Elovich kinetic and Sips isotherm models. MCG aerogels are potential candidates for enhanced radioiodine adsorption due to their high radioiodine capture performance and excellent recyclability.

One-step hydrothermal synthesis of MIL-88A/BiOCl0.1Br0.9(M88/BCB) solid solution Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts

Yanhua Gao,Hongya Liu,Dongfeng Zhang,Ying Chen,Yuning Liang,Juan Ren

In this paper, M88/BCB Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts were synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal method. A series of characterization analyses showed that the introduction of iron-based MOF material M88 with mixed valence (Fe2+/Fe3+) increased not only the specific surface area of BCB, which was 2.2 times higher than that of BiOCl0.1Br0.9 solid solution, but also the existence of Fe2+/Fe3+ redox centers promoting the in situ photoFenton-like reaction, which could generate more ˙O2− and ˙OH. In addition, the introduction of M88 further enhances the visible light response capability of BCB and the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers. Under visible light for 120 min, 10% M88/BCB can degrade 89.74% of TC, which is 2.1 times and 1.6 times higher than that of M88 and BCB, respectively. A possible photocatalytic degradation mechanism of Z-scheme heterojunctions was proposed based on the study of the band structure and the capture experiment of active species.

MIL-100@ZIF-67 Enhanced Microbial Electroreduction of CO2 to Produce CH4 by Promoting Electron Transfer

Zhuo Chen,Ze Zhang,Rongxin Xia,Junhu Zhou,Jun Cheng

To improve the conversion rate of carbon dioxide (CO2) to methane (CH4) in a microbial electrochemical system (MES), the zeolitic imidazolate framework ZIF-67(Co) with electron storage properties was first grown in situ on MIL-100(Fe) with excellent CO2 adsorption properties by a hydrothermal method. The obtained binary core–shell MIL@ZIF material was then adsorbed by carbon felt on a cathode to grow biofilms composed of electroactive microorganisms for characterization and testing in an MES. This system exhibited a CH4 production rate of 0.42 mmol LR–1 d–1, along with an impressive faradaic efficiency of 96.4%. Three-dimensional excitation–emission matrix spectra of extracellular polymeric substances indicated that those containing higher contents of humic acid shifted electron pairs and converted redox states to facilitate electron transfer. MIL@ZIF enriched hydrogenotrophic methanogens and electrogenic bacteria in microbial communities with enhanced gene expression of electrically conductive pili and cytochrome C to strengthen interspecies electron transfer. MIL@ZIF enhanced CO2 adsorption and electron storage, reinforcing electron transfer chains and boosting CH4 yield by a factor of 10.7.

Preparation of BiVO4/MIL-125(Ti) composite with enhanced visible-light photocatalytic activity for dye degradation

Zhiquan Yang,Jie Ding,Jinna Feng,Chong He,Ying Li,Xiaowen Tong,Xiaojun Niu,Hongguo Zhang

Because of their desired features, including very specific surface areas and designable framework architecture together with their possibility to be functionalized, Metal Framework (MOF) is a promising platform for supporting varied materials in respect of catalytic applications in water treatment. In this work, a novel visible-light-responsive photocatalyst that comprised BiVO 4 together with MIL-125(Ti), was synthesized by a two-step hydrothermal approach. The characterization of as-obtained samples as performed by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscope, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflection spectra. Rhodamine B was selected being a target for the evaluation of the photocatalytic function of as-developed photocatalyst. The photocatalytic reaction parameters, for example, the content of BiVO 4 as well as initial concentration of Rhodamine B was researched. The composite photocatalyst possessing Bi:Ti molar ratio of 3:2 brought to light the fact that the greatest photocatalytic activity had the ability to degrade 92% of Rhodamine B in 180 min. In addition to that, the BiVO 4 /MIL-125(Ti) composite could keep its photocatalytic activity during the recycling test. The phenomenon of disintegration of the photo-generated charges in the BiVO 4 /MIL-125(Ti) composite was brought to discussion as well.

Construction of NH2-MIL-101(Cr)/TiO2 heterojunction for enhancing visible light response in photocathodic protection

Lifeng Chi,Xiutong Wang,Siyao Guo,Meipeng Ren,Hua Guo,Mingchun Wang,Youbo Nan,Jinguo Wang

Photocathodic protection has obtained enormous attention in the field of metal corrosion control as an efficient and eco-friendly technology. Developing the photoelectrode with good photoelectrochemical properties is a prerequisite for achieving satisfactory photocathodic protection performance. Here, the NH 2 -MIL-101(Cr)/TiO 2 heterostructures are prepared. Meanwhile, the organic linkers and metal ions from NH 2 -MIL-101(Cr) are used to synthesize the N- and Cr-doped TiO 2 anodes, respectively. The UV–vis DRS, photoluminescence spectra and photoelectrochemical tests conducted under visible light demonstrate the enhanced light absorption, suppressed photoinduced charge carrier recombination, and accelerated separation and transfer rates of photoinduced electron-hole pairs in the TiO 2 composites. The 304 stainless steel connected with NH 2 -MIL-101(Cr)/TiO 2 heterostructures shows the most negative potential (about −0.72 V vs. SCE) and satisfied stability in a 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. The result can be explained by the significantly enhanced optical and photoelectrochemical properties and the strong electric field intensity in the composite heterojunctions. Besides, it has been observed that the NH 2 -MIL-101(Cr)/TiO 2 heterostructures exhibit the best photocathodic protection performance than Cr and N-doped TiO 2 anodes. This research broadens the application scope of MOFs in corrosion resistance and helps to assess the effect of heterostructure construction and element doping on TiO 2 .

Core/Shell Metal Oxides@MIL-53(Al) Nanoparticles as Catalyst for the Selective Hydrogenation of Cinnamaldehyde

Wenjing Li,Weichen Wang,Mingyue Zhu,Peiao Cong,Daowei Gao,Rongyao Wang,Guozhu Chen

Metal oxides@metal–organic framework (MOFs)-based core/shell nanostructures demonstrate promising potential in catalytic hydrogenations. However, the direct nucleation and growth of MOFs on the topologically diverse surfaces of metal oxides face significant challenges due to the high interfacial energy resulting from topological mismatches. Herein, we present a facile in situ growth strategy for directly assembling an MIL-53(Al) layer on the surface of CeO2 nanospheres at low temperatures by mixing and stirring CeO2 nanospheres and MIL-53(Al) precursors without requiring sacrificial templates or additional surface modifications. Moreover, key factors such as reaction time, temperature, and the types of aluminum salts and ligands are systematically explored to comprehensively understand the nucleation behavior of MOFs shells. Notably, when active Pt nanoparticles are sandwiched between the CeO2 core and the MIL-53(Al) shell, the MIL-53(Al) effectively stabilizes the Pt nanoparticles and enhances the selectivity of hydrocinnamaldehyde in cinnamaldehyde hydrogenation. CeO2/Pt@MIL-53(Al) achieved more than twice the selectivity for HCAL compared to CeO2/Pt and even outperformed Pt/MIL-53(Al). Undoubtedly, this study provides distinctive insights into the nucleation and growth mechanisms of MOFs on metal oxides, expands the strategies for fabricating metal oxides@MOFs core/shell nanostructure, and proposes innovative ideas and possibilities for broadening the application domains of MOFs-based materials.

Enhanced Cr(VI) removal via CPBr-modified MIL-88A@amine-functionalized GO: synthesis, performance, and mechanism

Hammad Eman N.,Eltaweil Abdelazeem S.,Abouelenein Saeyda A.,El-Subruiti Gehan

Water contamination by heavy metals, especially chromium (VI), poses a critical environmental issue due to its carcinogenic nature and persistence in the environment. Addressing this, the current study develops an efficient adsorbent, CPBr-MIL-88A@AmGO, which utilizes the synergistic capabilities of Cetylpyridinium bromide–modified MIL-88A and amine-functionalized graphene oxide to enhance Cr(VI) removal from aqueous solutions. The obtained results indicate that CPBr-MIL-88A@AmGO achieves its highest removal efficacy at pH 2, where the interaction of CPBr and AmGO’s positively charged centers significantly contributes to the adsorption processes. According to the Langmuir isotherm model, the composite’s adsorption capacity reached a maximum of 306.75 mg/g. The adsorption kinetics adhered to a pseudo-second-order model along with the endothermic nature of the process. Although the presence of SO 4 2- ions significantly reduces adsorption capacity, other interfering ions including Na + , K + , Ca 2+ , Cl - , and NO 3 - only slightly affect it. Remarkably, the composite maintains high removal efficiency, over 82%, even after 7 recycling tests, underscoring its potential for practical applications in water treatment systems. The proposed mechanism involves the contribution of electrostatic attractions, ion exchange, complexation, and the reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) in the removal process. This study not only offers a potent solution for Cr(VI) remediation but also contributes to sustainable water resource management.

TiO2/CoOx heterostructure decorated MIL-100(Fe) by atomic layer deposition for enhanced photocatalytic oxygen production

Wenhui Hu,Zhongxin Song,Lingna Sun,Lei Zhang,Qianling Zhang,Xiangzhong Ren,Yongliang Li

Efficient separation of photogenerated charge carriers is essential for maximizing the photocatalytic efficiency of semiconductor materials in oxygen evolution reactions (OER). This study presents a novel trimetallic photocatalyst, MIL-100(Fe)/TiO2/CoOx, synthesized through a facile microwave-assisted hydrothermal method followed by atomic layer deposition (ALD). The porous MIL-100(Fe) serves as a support for the sequential deposition of TiO2 and CoOx layers via ALD, which enhances electron–hole pair separation and minimizes their recombination. Characterization using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirms the uniform deposition of TiO2 and CoOx layers on the MIL-100(Fe) surface. The optimized photocatalyst, processed with 20 deposition cycles of Co, exhibits exceptional photocatalytic OER performance, with an oxygen evolution rate of 558.3 μmol g−1 h−1. This enhancement in activity is attributed to the synergistic interaction between the spatially separated TiO2 and CoOx cocatalysts, which facilitates efficient charge transfer and increases the number of active sites. These findings highlight the potential of ALD-fabricated heterostructures in the development of advanced photocatalysts for sustainable energy production.

Sustainable oxygen evolution catalysis: Water-based fabrication of FeNi-MIL-100 on recycled stainless steel substrates

Li Zhong,Ni Wang,Liangkui Sun,Xingchen Xie,Lixiang He,Mingliang Xiang,Wencheng Hu

The anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) process is essential in new technologies such as water electrolysis and metal-air batteries. However, it often exhibits suboptimal efficiency and delayed kinetics. This study presents a novel and new design for the fabrication of homogeneous FeNiBTC/SSM (SSM = stainless steel material) with tunable crystalline properties by a self-sacrificial and in situ synthesis from a recycled stainless steel substrate. The modified stainless steel template enhances the material’s properties compared to the original mesh substrate and its structure can be attributed to the typical MIL-100 (Material of Institute Lavoisier) structure, which is a hierarchically structured, highly chemically stable material formed by FeO6 octahedral clusters around a single shared oxygen anion. The as-synthesized FeNiBTC/SSM4 catalyst exhibited excellent electrocatalytic performance for OER, as indicated by its small Tafel slope (74.5 mV dec −1 ), low overpotential (η 10 223.7 mV), and high current retention (95.4 %) after a stability test lasting 45 h. The study demonstrates the development of water-based and self-sustaining MOF electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction in a simple process, along with a novel method for reusing renewable resources.

Removal of tetracycline by La(OH)3 modified MIL-101(Cr) adsorbent with multiple adsorption sites

Chunlong Qiu,Haiyang Sun,Yeyang Ni,Zhenjiang Dou,Ming Xia,Zhaoyang Fei,Zhuxiu Zhang,Mifen Cui,Qing Liu,Xu Qiao

The impressive water stability demonstrated by MIL-101(Cr) highlights its considerable potential for the effective elimination of organic contaminants from wastewater. Nevertheless, the limited availability of adsorption sites within MOFs leads to an unsatisfactory capacity for tetracycline (TC) adsorption. In this case, the lanthanum modified MIL-101(Cr) porous adsorbents, termed as nLa-MIL-101(Cr), were successfully synthesized using a post-synthetic modification method. Through various characterization analyses, it was confirmed that lanthanum exists in the form of La(OH) 3 within the adsorbents, and all adsorbents also preserved the original structure as MIL-101(Cr). The results of static adsorption experiments demonstrated that, compared to the original material, the adsorption capacity of 1La-MIL-101(Cr) for TC increased by 3.5 times. Further experiments demonstrated that the adsorbent exhibits remarkable ion interference resistance and cycle stability. Finally, based on X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the adsorption mechanism was primarily attributed to the coordination between TC molecules and metals active site, while electrostatic interactions also played a significant role in the process. This study has developed a highly efficient adsorbent for the treatment of TC-contaminated wastewater, which reflects promising practical application prospects.

Removal of tellurium(IV) from environmental aquatic systems using metal-organic framework material MIL-100(Fe)

Huang Yiru,Li Youyou,Zhong Qingwei,Luo Chen

View large Download slide View large Download slide Close modal Metal-organic framework (MOF) materials, characterized by their porosity and large specific surface areas, exhibit excellent adsorption properties. With the aim of removing Te(IV) from environmental aquatic systems, this study is the first to propose the use of MIL-100(Fe). The material reveals a strong adsorption capacity for Te(IV), with maximum adsorption of 531.9 mg/g, superior to other adsorbent materials. Adsorption isotherm and kinetic models indicate that the adsorption process primarily involves monolayer chemical adsorption. According to the thermodynamic parameters, the adsorption reaction is endothermic. The experiment individually examined factors affecting the material's adsorption performance, including adsorbent dose, initial concentration of Te(IV), pH, adsorption time, and coexisting ions. Even under high ion strength conditions and high concentrations of coexisting ions, the material's adsorption efficiency for Te(IV) still reached over 94%. The material has been successfully applied to remove Te(IV) from lake water, river water, and seawater, yielding satisfactory results. Due to the high salinity and ionic strength of the solution, the removal efficiency of Te(IV) in the seawater matrix was slightly lower than that in freshwater (river and lake water). Thus, this material shows promise for the removal of Te(IV) from complex aquatic systems. MIL-100(Fe) was prepared and characterized. The Te(IV) can be adsorbed by MIL-100(Fe) effectively, and the adsorption process was primarily a monolayer chemical adsorption and an endothermic reaction. The Te(IV) can be removed effectively in environmental water supplies by MIL-100(Fe).
