Bimetallic MIL-68(InFe) MOF nanorods for biomimetic photocatalytic N2 fixation

Cheng Liu,Mengning Chen,Yueling Chen,Qi Chen,Jionghua Wu,Sen Lin,Ling Wu,Jimmy C. Yu

This work develops a series of bimetallic MIL-68(InFe) MOF nanorods (NM(In 1-x Fe x )) mimicking the nitrogenase for biomimetic photocatalytic N 2 fixation. The partial substitution of In 3+ with Fe 3+ leads to the electron redistribution from In 3+ to Fe 3+ , generating electron-poor In 3+ (In (3+δ)+ ) sites and electron-rich Fe 3+ (Fe (3–δ)+ ) sites as an electron acceptor–donor combination to promote the N 2 activation by a π back-donation mechanism. The smaller size of the nanorods further provides more accessible active sites than the bulk counterpart. In cooperation with the H + released from the H 2 O, the activated N 2 molecules were reduced by photogenerated electrons to give NH 3 . The optimal sample NM(In 0.90 Fe 0.10 ) exhibited the highest NH 4 + production rate of 30.8 µmol·h −1 ·g −1 without any sacrificial agent, attributed to the presence of abundant In/Fe bimetallic sites for N 2 activation and enhanced charge mobility. This work provides new insights into rational design for artificial N 2 fixation systems by mimicking natural nitrogenase.

Bimetallic MOF-Based Sensor for Highly Sensitive Detection of Ammonia Gases

Liwei Hou,Xinyue Xu,Zhoujun Zhong,Fengchun Tian,Li Wang,Yi Xu

The demand for the detection of ultralow concentrations of ammonia gas is growing. A bimetallic metal–organic framework (MOF) comprising Prussian blue analogs (PBAs) was used to achieve highly sensitive and stable detection of ammonia gas at room temperature in this study. First, PB was enriched by using ammonia for improved gas sensing properties. Second, a sensitive membrane with more vacancies was formed by partially replacing Fe3+ with Cu2+ through a cation-exchange strategy. Finally, a capacitive sensor was developed for ultralow-concentration ammonia detection using a Cu–Fe PBA sensitive membrane and interdigitated electrodes (IDEs). To investigate the adsorption efficiency of the designed composite sensitive film for ammonia, PBAs nanoparticles were deposited on a quartz microcrystal balance (QCM) via cyclic voltammetry and a hydrothermal method. Approximately 10 ppm of ammonia was adsorbed under 1 atm by the Cu–Fe PBA film prepared using a reaction time of 36 h, and the adsorption efficiency was measured to be 2.2 mmol g–1 using the QCM frequency response. The Cu–Fe PBAs were also tested using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller theory. The introduction of Cu2+ ions significantly increased the specific surface area of Cu–Fe PBAs MOF, and the number of adsorption sites for ammonia also increased; however, its skeleton structure remained similar to that of PB. Then, the capacitive sensor based on Cu–Fe PBA sensitive membrane and IDE was fabricated and the gas sensing detection device was established for ammonia detection. Overall, the developed capacitive sensor exhibits a linear response of 75–1000 ppb and a detection limit of 3.8 ppb for ultralow ammonia concentrations, which makes it superior to traditional detection methods and thus allows excellent application prospects.

Photocatalytic Reduction of CO2 by Multimetallic 2D MOF-Co/Cu/Fe

Hui Han,He Cui,Jiabo Wang,Kai Ge,Yongfang Yang

Graphical In this paper, 2D MOF-Co, 2D MOF-Co/Cu, and 2D MOF-Co/Cu/Fe are designed and prepared using 1,4-benzendicarboxylic acid (1,4-BDC) as organic ligands. Their charge transfer, separation efficiency, and effects on photocatalytic CO 2 reduction are studied. The results show that 2D multimetallic MOF-Co/Cu/Fe has better photocatalytic CO 2 reduction activity, so it has higher research value and development prospect in the field of photocatalytic CO 2 reduction. In this study, 2D multimetallic MOFs combined with the advantages of 2D nanosheets, with the synergetic effect of multimetallic nodes, exhibited good photocatalytic activity for reduction of CO 2 . Herein, a 2D MOF-Co/Cu/Fe were successfully prepared via one-pot stirring of the solutions of multimetal salts and organic ligands at room temperature. Introduction of the second and third metal (Cu and Fe) into MOF-Co does not change the 2D morphology of MOFs, although it improved the photocatalytic CO 2 reduction performance by broadening the light absorption range of 2D MOF-Co, accelerating the separation efficiency and transfer rate of photogenerated carriers. Upon irradiation with full-spectrum light, the average CO yield of 2D MOF-Co/Cu/Fe achieved 17.06 µmol·g −1 ·h −1 , being about 1.8 and 1.2 times that of 2D MOF-Co and 2D MOF-Co/Cu. This work provides an insight into 2D multimetallic MOFs-based photocatalysts in catalytic CO 2 reduction.

SWCNTs-channeled MOF nanosheet membrane for high-efficient organic solvent nanofiltration

Mian Wu,Xixue Fu,Jing Li,Wenqian Zhao,Xiaobing Li

Organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) has become increasingly important in petrochemical and pharmaceutical industries, demanding superior and robust membranes. 2D MOF nanosheets hold great promise in the preparation of OSN membrane. Nevertheless, the fabrication of defect-free 2D MOF membranes with robust mechanical strength is hampered due to the weak interlamellar interactions between MOF nanosheets. Herein, 2D MOF composite membrane for high-performance OSN application is fabricated through the assembly of copper 1,4-benzene dicarboxylate (CuBDC) nanosheets and NH 2 -SWCNTs. Within this composite configuration, NH 2 -SWCNTs can shelter the defects between the adjacent CuBDC nanosheets, rendering CuBDC/CNTs composite membranes precise molecular sieving ability. Meanwhile, the nanochannels created by NH 2 -SWCNTs with low frictional coefficients on the internal surface promote the permeation of organic solvents. Moreover, the multiple interactions between CuBDC and NH 2 -SWCNTs improve the mechanical strength of composite membranes. Accordingly, the composite membranes display excellent rejections of dye molecules on the basis of size-sieving mechanism with superior methanol permeance of 1260 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 , as well as steady congo red rejection at high trans -membrane pressure of 5 bar, demonstrating good pressure resistance of composite membranes. Moreover, the composite membranes exhibit outstanding stability against high-concentration feeds and long-term operation for 50 h, confirming excellent practicality in the purification of dyes from organic solvents. The design approach in this work may inspire the fabrication of other nanosheet-based membranes for high-efficient OSN.

Synthesis of MOF@COF composites and study on dye adsorption properties

Bingzhen Ma,Wangye Hu,Yue Zhou,Yangyang Li,Yuhui Zhang,Meiqi Zhou

MOF@COF hybrid materials not only have high stability and adjustable function, but also have the characteristics of MOFs and COFs materials, which make them have important application value in the field of adsorption. This article employs 1,3,5-benzene tricarbonyl chloride and p -Phenylenediamine as covalent organic framework monomers. Through the in-situ growth of covalent organic frameworks (COF) on the surface of NH 2 -MIL-88(Fe) material, a novel, stable, and porous COF-on-MOF hybrid material (NH 2 -MIL-88(Fe)/COF) was synthesized. The structure, morphology, and performance of the hybrid material were thoroughly examined using characterization techniques, including Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). Subsequently, We explored the MOF@COF hybrid material as an effective adsorbent for removing organic dyes, namely methylene blue (MB), methyl orange (MO), and crystal violet (CV). The influence of various adsorption parameters, such as adsorption time, initial dye concentration, and different pH values, on dye adsorption performance was systematically investigated. Experimental results revealed that at pH = 7, NH 2 -MIL-88(Fe)/COF demonstrates maximum adsorption capacities of 114 mg·g −1 , 106 mg·g −1 , and 102 mg·g −1 for methylene blue, methyl orange, and crystal violet, respectively. The adsorption process follows pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm models. Lastly, NH 2 -MIL-88(Fe)/COF maintains high removal efficiency for the three dyes even after five repeated uses, establishing it as a stable and efficient adsorbent. The research findings suggest that MOF@COF hybrid materials hold promising applications in the treatment of dye-containing wastewater.

Waste PET-derived MOF-5 for high-efficiency removal of tetracycline

Shaoan Cheng,Yangxi Li,Zhen Yu,Ruonan Gu,Wei Wu,Yuqing Su

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) accounts for 40 % of discarded plastics, and its recycling products have outstanding environmental protection and energy-saving performance, so how to improve the current low recycling rate of waste PET has caught increasing attention. In this paper, waste PET plastic was depolymerized to prepare terephthalic acid (TPA) as an organic linker to synthesize MOF-5. MOF-5 was applied to the adsorption of tetracycline (TC). The batch experiments exhibited that kinetic and isotherm data best fitted the pseudo-first-order model and Langmuir isotherm model with a maximum adsorption capacity of 2325.55 mg g −1 . The regeneration rate of MOF-5 at the fifth cycle was 85.51 %. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) technique and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy both indicated the main adsorption mechanism of MOF-5 toward TC could be attributed to hydrogen bonding and the ionic interactions between the unsaturated bonds (C = O and O–C = O) in MOF-5 and TC molecules. Alginate hydrogel with 30–150 mg MOF-5 loading provided better adsorption performance toward TC than MOF-5 powder, and 90 mg MOF-5 loaded hydrogel performed the highest removal rate of 66.28 %. This work proposed a novel method using waste plastics as raw materials to synthesize pollutant adsorbent, which had an enlightening effect on pollutant treatment.

HIV Removal by MOF-Based Microspheres: A Potential Adsorbent for Hemoadsorption

Yanjia Zhang,FangFei Xue,Yunzheng Du,Biao Wang,Mengya Chen,Lichun Wang,Nan Li,Yamin Chai,Zuoliang Dong,Lailiang Ou

At present, AIDS remains a significant global health issue that requires ongoing attention. Although there is no practical cure for AIDS, hemoadsorption can effectively remove the virus from the blood and may serve as a promising treatment strategy. In this research, cellulose acetate/metal–organic framework composite beads (CA/MIL-125) with interconnected macropores were first fabricated using a one-step phase inversion method and then applied as a viral hemoadsorbent for the treatment of AIDS. The results showed that CA/MIL-125 exhibited excellent specific surface areas (221.17 m2 g–1) and an interconnected macropore structure, which allows HIV molecules to be transported freely within the pores of the beads. The CA/MIL-125 composite beads reached a 97.37% adsorption rate of HIV in plasma, which was 90 times higher than that of pure cellulose acetate (CA) microspheres, demonstrating that MIL-125 played a dominant role in HIV adsorption. Furthermore, the adsorption of CA/MIL-125 on HIV primarily obeys the pseudo-second-order kinetics and Freundlich model, with a maximum adsorption capacity (Qm) of 642.2 ng g–1. Tests for hemolysis, coagulation time, and cytotoxicity confirmed that CA/MIL-125 had good blood compatibility and biocompatibility. This study presents an effective strategy for HIV adsorption through hemoperfusion, suggesting a promising new treatment approach for AIDS.

Antibacterial Photodynamic Study on Porphyrin-Based MOF Nanoflowers under Visible Light

Dongxu Xu,Qian Duan,Hui Yu,Wenyue Dong

Photodynamic antibacterial materials based on reactive oxygen species (ROS), with the advantages of nonresistance and avoiding common issues such as nonspecific cellular toxicity associated with many antibiotic drugs, are gradually emerging as an attractive treatment modality with significant potential for antibacterial therapy. However, the effectiveness and safety of current photodynamic antibacterial materials still need to be improved. In this study, porphyrin-based metal–organic framework (MOF) nanoflowers were designed and synthesized via a solvent-thermal method using meso-tetra (4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin (TCPP) as the organic ligands and Cu2+ as the coordinating metal ions, which show visible light responsive photodynamic and photothermal antibacterial effects. As a precise stimulus, visible light can effectively control the production of ROS, enabling controllable photodynamic effects and achieving remarkable photothermal antibacterial efficacy. The designed porphyrin-based MOF nanoflowers have successfully demonstrated broad-spectrum, nonresistant antibacterial properties against Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria, and fungi while exhibit excellent biocompatibility. This work paves the way for a safe and effective approach to photodynamic antibacterial therapy.

Sensitive and Anti-Interference Al3+ Sensing with a Luminescent Eu-MOF

Shu-Yan Wei,Jia Chen,Shen-Yin Hou,Bo Sun,Jing Ren,Xin-Hui Wang,Lei Geng,Zhi-Ming Zhang,Hua-Qing Yin

A luminescent lanthanide metal–organic framework, [(TD)5Eu4(HCO2)2(DMF)4] (Eu-TD, TD/H2BTDB = 4,4′-(benzo[c][1,2,5] thiadiazole-4,7-diyl)dibenzoic acid), was synthesized via a solvothermal method by coordinating Eu3+ ions with the strongly emissive ligand H2BTDB. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that the Eu-TD is in the hexagonal system with space group P6422. Eu-TD demonstrated exceptional selectivity toward Al3+ ions, exhibiting remarkable sensitivity with a low detection limit (limit of detection (LOD) = 0.04 μM) and excellent anti-interference properties. Eu-TD exhibits a pronounced Al3+-triggered luminescent turn-on response across varied aqueous environments, underscoring its viability for environmental monitoring applications. The selective Al3+ recognition in Eu-TD originates from Lewis basic N sites that strongly coordinate with Al3+ through acid–base interactions, concurrently enhancing the absorbance and amplifying the luminescence.

Enhanced Electron Transport in Fractal Conductive MOF Aerogels Boosting Microwave Absorption

Yuanchen Li,Zhou Wang,Na Wu,Sen Jiao,Wenrui Che,Mingrui Han,Jingpeng Lin,Kaixuan Zhang,Fei Pan,Jiurong Liu,Zhihui Zeng

Inherently conductive metal-organic frameworks (c-MOFs) have emerged as promising absorbers of electromagnetic wave (EMW) due to their synergistic combination of intrinsic porosity, high surface area, and tunable topological structures. However, the challenges exist in constructing robust c-MOF monoliths with high electron transport efficiency, which limits their functional applications. Here, electrospun fibers are hydrothermally etched, creating fractal fibers with abundant polar functional groups to induce in situ growth of c-MOFs. Such facilitates the formation of crystal-cluster configurations on fiber surfaces, significantly elevating electron transport efficiency across c-MOFs and reducing overall interfacial contact resistance. The constructed fractal c-MOF aerogels achieve a minimum reflection loss of −61 dB, and an effective absorption bandwidth of 8.24 GHz at an ultra-low density of 0.040 g cm −3 , significantly outperforming existing EMW absorbing c-MOFs. This work demonstrates new c-MOF aerogels for enhanced EMW absorption and multifunctionalities, advancing the engineering of c-MOFs devices.

SERS detection of uranyl based on MOF-coated gold nanooctahedron hybrid

Yuan Chao,Ge Hongwei,Cao Benmei,Wang Suhua

The ability to sensitively and quantitatively detect uranyl in complex samples plays a vital role in environmental monitoring. In this work, an MOF-coated gold (Au) nanohybrid was synthesized for uranyl detection by surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technology. The MOF shell not only prevents the Au nanoparticles from rapid aggregation, but also effectively enhances the Raman signal of uranyl. A detection limit of as low as 0.5 μM could be achieved in solution, which could be comparable to the previously reported ones from SERS-based approaches. Moreover, the prepared SERS-active substrate was also applied to uranyl detection in real samples. Graphical Abstract

Scalable fabrication of biohybrid magnetic MOF-based micromotors for toxin enrichment

Xiangyu Wang,Haidong Yu,Xiaohu Xia,Yixuan Yang,Bingsuo Zou,Rui Ma,Yabin Zhang,Ben Wang

Contemporary industrial production and human activity release numerous toxins into our environment. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are potential candidates for addressing these toxins due to their ultrahigh surface area, tailored pore size, and responsiveness to stimuli. With the rise of micro/nanomotor, imparting active motion to MOFs becomes crucial for efficiently performing tasks in challenging locations. However, creating individual active MOF entities is challenging during preparation, and they may perform tasks inefficiently, even if constructed. It is essential to explore active MOF-based micromotors without compromising their loading capacity, particularly with the rising use of low-surface-area nanoparticles. Leveraging the diverse structures and forms found in nature, this study proposes a universal synthesis strategy for a series of biohybrid magnetic MOF-based micromotors (BMMM), enabling rapid and efficient enrichment of toxins within narrow or small cavities under magnetic actuation. The resultant BMMM show high surface area, abundant pores, and improved magnetic responsiveness. These characteristics allow them to demonstrate exceptionally improved efficiency for various toxins: up to 1118.66 mg/g, which is further demonstrated in narrow microtubes, with over 90% efficiency after several cycling uses. This study not only provides a universal strategy for constructing BMMM but also offers an efficient solution for toxin treatment in out-of-reach cavities.
