Conductive Hydrogel with Ta4C3TX MXene to Detect Human Movement

Fan Wu,Long Yu,Liyi Zhou,Jiarong Zhang,Ya’nan Zhao,Chunna Yu,Chang Zhao,Guangjian Xing

Nanocomposite hydrogels with exceptional mechanical properties and sensing performance are ideal for flexible sensors designed to detect human movements and monitor human health. In this study, a composite hydrogel was prepared through in situ polymerization using a combination of poly(methacrylic acid-co-acrylamide) (P(MAA-co-AAM)), poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT/PSS), and Ta4C3TX MXene. The resulting P(MAA-co-AAM)/PEDOT/PSS/Ta4C3TX hydrogel features a porous network structure closely cross-linked with hydrogen bonds, providing superior mechanical properties such as high elastic modulus, compressive strength, and low hysteresis ratio. The compressive strength of the hydrogel reaches 386.80 kPa, significantly surpassing that of pure P(MAA-co-AAM) hydrogels and other hydrogels. The piezoresistive sensor developed with this hydrogel demonstrates outstanding pressure sensing capabilities: a sensitivity of 0.44 kPa–1, a low detection limit of 38.63 Pa, a rapid response time of 44 ms, and a recovery time of 58 ms. Notably, the sensor can sustain over 1000 sensing cycles with remarkable stability and weather resistance. It can accurately detect human body movements, such as joint movements, and even recognize subtle facial microexpressions. Furthermore, the sensor can wirelessly monitor robotic movements through a Bluetooth system and accompanying software. This mechanically robust hydrogel holds significant promise for applications in pressure sensors, human-machine interaction, and portable wearable devices.

Efficient Catalytic Activity of Ti3C2Tx MXene for Polyester Synthesis

Xuan Fei,Yingjie Wang,Penglei Guo,Jinggang Wang,Guyue Wang,Guangming Lu,Weiwei Zhao,Xiaoqing Liu

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is one of the most widely used polymers for beverage packaging and fibers, with antimony-based catalysts currently dominating its synthesis. However, concerns about potential safety hazards associated with antimony leaching necessitate the development of environmentally benign catalysts free from heavy metals. In this work, we report the first-time utilization of Ti3C2Tx MXene as a polycondensation catalyst of PET. The intrinsic viscosity of Ti3C2Tx MXene-catalyzed PET could reach 0.78 dL/g within 2.1 h, which demonstrated a superior catalytic efficiency compared to antimony trioxide (Sb2O3). Moreover, Ti3C2Tx MXene exhibited a satisfactory performance not only in PET synthesis but also in the production of polypropylene terephthalate (PPT) and polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), thereby confirming its universality in polyester catalysis. The catalytic activity of Ti3C2Tx MXene in polycondensation reactions was attributed to the presence of strong Lewis acid sites, as supported by surface examinations and computational studies. Notably, Ti3C2Tx MXene-catalyzed PET exhibited satisfied crystallizability, as confirmed by the short crystallization half-time of only 6.9 s at 185 °C, signifying a high crystallization rate. This work highlights the potential applications of this thriving 2D material in polyester catalysis and, more importantly, provides a new perspective for the exploration and design of efficient and environmentally friendly catalyst/nucleation agents for polyester synthesis.

CoMn-LDH/Ti-MXene for asymmetric supercapacitor positive electrode

Li Dexin,Yao Jianbo,Ren Zhong,Luo Heming,Zhang Jianqiang

The CoMn-LDH/MXene composite was fabricated via hydrothermal synthesis, with nanoscale CoMn-LDH encapsulated on MXene through surface functional groups. This effectively prevents CoMn-LDH aggregation and improves its electrochemical properties. The effects of cobalt-manganese ratio, reaction time, and temperature on the electrochemical properties of CoMn-LDH were explored, as well as the impact of MXene addition on CoMn-LDH composite properties. A comparative analysis of the structural features of pure CoMn-LDH and the composite CoMn-LDH/0.08MXene reveals that the latter exhibits a more pronounced hierarchical structure. Composite CoMn-LDH/0.08MXene has a specific capacity of 1517.8 C-g −1 at a current density of 1 A g −1 , significantly surpassing the 1186.8 C·g⁻1 achieved by pure CoMn-LDH. The asymmetric supercapacitor constructed with this composite material reached an energy density of 48.5 Wh·kg-1 and a power density of 755.3 W·kg −1 , retaining 95% of its capacity after 5000 charge/discharge cycles. The synergistic effect of CoMn-LDH and MXene enhances the capacitance and stability of the CoMn-LDH/0.08MXene composite capacitor. The simplicity of the preparation process, coupled with the excellent performance of the CoMn-LDH/MXene composites, suggests that they have considerable potential for use in advanced energy storage applications.

Electrochemically-Switched Microwave Response of MXene in Organic Electrolyte

Wenkun Fei,Jianmin Li,Linfeng Ma,Tongqing Zhou,Xianjun Zhu,Xingyu He,Shujuan Liu,Jing Bian,Qiang Zhao

The increasingly complex electromagnetic (EM) environment necessitates advanced electrically controllable electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials that can adapt to varying EM conditions. This study develops a flexible electrochemically tunable EMI shielding device based on ultrathin Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene films, exhibiting reversible shielding effectiveness (SE) modulation from 18.9 to 26.2 dB in X band at 0.1 and −1.5 V. Unlike the previously reported mechanism relying on interlayer spacing adjustments, the work leverages transformations of charging state and surface chemistry for tunability during the electrochemical process. The Ti 3 C 2 T x flake size is also evidenced to play a crucial role, with smaller flakes offering higher absorption modulation despite lower SE modulation, enabling the device with high designability. When integrated with Salisbury screen structure, the device achieves adjustable absorption from 93.560% at 0.1 V to 99.996% at −1 V, showing a tunable reflection suppression ratio up to 32 dB with an effective bandwidth of 4.2 GHz. Additionally, incorporating resonant cavity structure enables absorption-dominated (over 90%) microwave-responsive switching at 0.1 and −1.5 V. This work highlights significant potential of adaptive EMI shielding materials for applications in smart electronic protection, EM switch, and radar camouflage.

3D porous PEDOT/MXene scaffold toward high-performance supercapacitors

Yingyi Ma,Kaizheng Xu,Xiaoting Liu,Shun Yao,Xinzheng Li,Yu Si,Xinran Li

3D architectures of conductive polymer, especially PEDOT hold great promise in energy storage and conversion fields. However, the facile construction of 3D PEDOT and its functionalization have still been challenges due to its poor processability. Herein, the fabrication of 3D porous PEDOT:PSS and its functionalization with MXene are realized synchronously through a simple and low-cost self-assembly process. The prominent capacitive performance of MXene, excellent chemical stability of PEDOT:PSS and 3D porous architecture with inhibited aggregation of MXene nanosheets, large amount of active sites, and electrolyte storage chamber endow the PEDOT/MXene-based porous structure with superior capacitive performance than individual PEDOT:PSS or MXene porous and flat structures. Furthermore, the PEDOT/MXene-based porous structure can be applied as a flexible scaffold for the deposition of conductive polymer to construct excellent electrodes for supercapacitors (SCs). When polypyrrole (PPy) is deposited, the prepared porous PEDOT:PSS/MXene/PPy electrode exhibits a high gravimetric specific capacitance of 345 F g −1 at a current density of 0.5 A g −1 and a remarkable capacitance retention of 89 % over 5000 cycles. Based on it, an asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) with a high energy density of 56.34 Wh kg −1 at the power density of 120 W kg −1 , and a capacitance retention of 75 % after 5000 cycles is developed. Besides, the porous PEDOT:PSS/MXene/PPy can be constructed on various substrates in any pattern with high design freedom, thus enabling customizable electrochemical performance. When constructing on a flexible substrate, excellent deformation-tolerant performance is shown. This work provides a high-performance electrode for SCs, as well as a universal route for the construction and functionalization of 3D PEDOT-based structures.

Polymorphic Polypyrrole-Modified MXene Nanosheets for Broadband Microwave Absorption

Huihuang Shen,Junjun Wang,Huabo Huang,Jiayou Ji,Liang Li

The absorption of microwaves is significantly influenced by the structure of the absorber. Typically, the electromagnetic parameters can be adjusted by modifying the structure of the absorber. In this work, a novel approach is proposed to enhance microwave absorption properties by adjusting the impedance matching of MXene nanosheets. MXene/PPy hybrids with loose lamellar structure are synthesized through self-assembly of positively charged polypyrrole (PPy) and MXene nanosheets with negative charges, facilitated by electrostatic and hydrogen-bonding interactions. The impact of polymorphic PPy on the electromagnetic parameters and microwave absorption properties of MXene nanosheets is comprehensively explored. It is found that the addition of PPy with different morphologies can effectively tune the electromagnetic parameters of the MXene nanosheets. Particularly, the microwave absorption capabilities are significantly enhanced when PPy nanopaperclips are uniformly adsorbed on the surface of the MXene nanosheets. This enhancement is attributed to the favorable impedance match between PPy nanopaperclips and MXene nanosheets along with the exceptional attenuation capabilities of PPy. A minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of −47.85 dB is achieved at an ultrathin matched thickness of 1.6 mm, and the maximum effective absorption bandwidth (EABmax) is 5.01 GHz at 1.9 mm for the prepared MXene/PPy nanopaperclip hybrid with a filling rate of 20%. Furthermore, a bandwidth with 99% absorption efficiency of 15.4 GHz (2.4–18.0 GHz) can be attained when the thickness of the absorber ranges from 1.6 to 10.0 mm. It is anticipated that this work will provide valuable insights for the manufacture of high-performance microwave absorbers.

Smart sensing hydrogel actuators conferred by MXene gradient arrangement

Jiazhou Zeng,Xin Jing,Liya Lin,Gangrong Wang,Yaoxun Zhang,Peiyong Feng

Smart sensing and excellent actuation abilities of natural organisms have driven scientists to develop bionic soft-bodied robots. However, most conventional robots suffer from poor electrical conductivity, limiting their application in real-time sensing and actuation. Here, we report a novel strategy to enhance the electrical conductivity of hydrogels that integrated actuation and strain-sensing functions for bioinspired self-sensing soft actuators. Conductive hydrogels were synthesized in situ by copolymerizing MXene nanosheets with thermosensitive N -isopropylacrylamide and acrylamide under a direct current electric field. The resulting hydrogels exhibited high electrical conductivity (2.11 mS/cm), good sensitivity with a gauge factor of 4.79 and long-term stability. The developed hydrogels demonstrated remarkable capabilities in detecting human motions at subtle strains such as facial expressions and large strains such as knee bending. Additionally, the hydrogel electrode patch was capable of monitoring physiological signals. Furthermore, the developed hydrogel showed good thermally induced actuation effects when the temperature was higher than 30 °C. Overall, this work provided new insights for the design of sensory materials with integrated self-sensing and actuation capabilities, which would pave the way for the development of high-performance conductive soft materials for intelligent soft robots and automated machinery.

Binbin Ding,Lan Yao,Jinhao Tang,Changlong Li,Xianhong Zheng

Textile-based supercapacitors (TSCs) have drawn increasing attention in recent years owing to their potential applications in wearable electronics. However, it remains a critical challenge to increase the energy density of TSCs. Herein, we develop a screen-printing strategy to scalable construct high-performance MXene-based all-solid-state textile supercapacitors, which exhibit excellent electrochemical performance, including high specific capacitance (4979.2 mF cm −2 ) and energy density (62.2 µWh cm −2 ). The electrochemical performance of assembled MXene-based TSCs is superior to the-state-of-the-art TSCs. This work provides a new strategy for fabricating high-performance flexible supercapacitors and paves the way for the development of wearable energy storage devices.

Lamellar MOF/MXene membranes for high-performance antibiotic desalination

Rui Zhang,Xiaohe Tian,Hongyi Wan,Xiangyu Liu,Keming Zhang,Haishan Huan,Tianhe Gu,Yueyangchao Yu,Shaofei Wang

Antibiotic desalination is a crucial purification process that selectively removes salts from antibiotic-containing streams to enhance product stability and reduce downstream processing costs. While 2D metal–organic framework (MOF) membranes offer molecular sieving potential, their aqueous instability due to weak van der Waals stacking limits practical implementation. We address this chemical engineering challenge via electrostatically dominated assembly of positively charged ZnBDC-NH 2 MOF nanosheets (+40 mV) and negatively charged MXene (−25 mV). This strategy synergizes MOF’s size-exclusion pores with MXene’s fast water-transport nanochannels, while interfacial hydrogen bonding enhances structural robustness. The optimized membrane achieves exceptional antibiotic desalination performance: 97.59 % chloramphenicol rejection and an unprecedented water permeance of 269.3 L m −2  h −1  bar −1 , while maintaining stability over 120 h. At a comparable antibiotic rejection level, this water permeance is approximately 5–10 times higher than that of most previously reported membranes. Crucially, it demonstrates superior antibiotic/salt selectivity and maintains performance across varied feed concentrations. This work establishes a scalable electrostatic assembly platform for next-generation membranes in practical antibiotic wastewater treatment.

Stable MXene/cellulose nanofiber membranes as osmotic energy generators

Ruoyang Sun,Yumeng Xia,Mengyuan Peng,Yinghui Wang,Jinming Zhang,Qingtao Liu,Shouwei Zhang,Jinfeng Wang

Osmotic energy is a clean and renewable alternative resource to non-renewable fossil fuel. Harvesting this “blue” energy typically required ion-selective membranes. Two-dimensional (2D) materials are ideal scaffolds for constructing nanofluidic ion-selective membranes in osmotic energy conversion. However, the 2D membranes were often fragile and instable in solutions because of the weak van der Waals interactions between two-dimensional nanosheets. Here, stable MXene nanofluidic membranes were constructed by incorporating cellulose nanofiber (CNF) in MXene. The CNF was used as binder to enhance the mechanical stability in solutions. The resulted MXene/CNF membranes were investigated in terms of structure, ion selectivity and osmotic energy generation. The results showed that the MXene/CNF membranes exhibited excellent cation selectivity due to the negative charged carried by MXene and CNF, benefiting the osmotic energy conversion. The maximum power output density reached up to 1.32 and 0.338 W m −2 at 1000-fold KCl and 50-fold NaCl concentration gradient, respectively. Moreover, this MXene/CNF energy generator exhibited a long-term output stability. This work demonstrated the great potential of nanofluidic generators based on the two-dimensional material and the biomass material cellulose for osmotic energy conversion processes.

Dendritic-honeycomb porous polyoxometalate/MXene films for supercapacitor applications

Xinzheng Li,Yingyi Ma,Xinran Li,Yu Si,Kexin Liu,Shiyun Wang,Zhihao Zhu,Jingfang Li

Designing advanced porous electrode materials with enhanced ion/electron transport pathways and structural integrity is of great importance for next-generation flexible energy storage devices. This work presents dendritic-honeycomb hierarchical porous electrodes using POM/MXene complexes inspired by natural structures. FeMo-POM clusters are grown on MXene nanosheets and self-assembled into 3D porous membranes via the breath figure method. The unique structure combines interconnected dendritic channels and honeycomb-like pores, suppressing MXene restacking, enhancing active site exposure, and creating abundant electrolyte reservoirs. Benefiting from the hierarchical porous structure and the conductive network of POM/MXene, the resulting membranes exhibit superior electrochemical performance, markedly outperforming individual components and the flat counterparts. Furthermore, the porous architecture serves as an ideal scaffold for active materials deposition. After electrochemical deposition of polypyrrole (PPy), the porous POM/MXene/PPy achieves a high specific capacitance of 1074.75 F g −1 (0.3 A g −1 ) with nearly 80 % retention over 7000 cycles. The assembled flexible quasi-solid-state symmetric supercapacitor (FQSSC) delivers an energy density of 40.83 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 125.0 W kg −1 , shows excellent flexibility, and operates reliably across a wide temperature range. It can light multiple LEDs and power small electronic devices, demonstrating its practical applicability. This work provides a scalable and versatile pathway for next-generation flexible energy storage devices.
