Optimization of the fundamental properties of the MgO-K2HPO4-SiO2 cement system and its microstructural evolution mechanism induced by 2-phosphonobutane-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid

Zhishuai Sun,Xujian Lin,Zijian Hu,Cheng Hu,Tao Ji

PBTCA effectively retards MSPPC hydration at an ultralow dosage of 0.12%. • PBTCA prolongs setting time and improves the fluidity of MSPPC pastes. • PBTCA reduces hydration heat release and delays early hydration reactions. • PBTCA provides effective retardation with less strength loss than borax. • A three-stage hydration regulation mechanism of PBTCA is proposed. Magnesium silicon potassium phosphate cement (MgO-K₂HPO₄-SiO₂, MSPPC) uses dipotassium hydrogen phosphate (DHP) as its phosphorus source and reactive silica fume (SF) as an essential component. Although MSPPC can be prepared without conventional retarders, its setting and fresh-state behavior require regulation to extend working time. To address the high dosage, strength loss, and health and environmental concerns of borax, 2-phosphonobutane-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid (PBTCA) was evaluated as a low-dosage organophosphonic retarder. Effects of 0.06%, 0.08%, 0.10%, and 0.12% PBTCA on workability, hydration, mechanical properties, and microstructure were investigated, and a three-stage hydration-regulation pathway was proposed. PBTCA prolonged setting and delayed early hydration in a dosage-dependent manner. At 0.12%, initial setting time increased from 7.0 to 46.2 min, fluidity from 70 to 148 mm, and the hydration-temperature peak shifted from 8.46 to 42.30 min with a 5.43 °C decrease. Compressive-strength loss at 0.12% decreased from 8.58% at 3 d to 6.52% at 56 d, while all PBTCA groups showed higher flexural strength, greatest at 0.06%. Microstructural analyses showed delayed early hydration-product development without new principal crystalline phases; at 56 d, the > 200 nm pore fraction decreased from 37.70% to 30.85% at 0.12% with little change in total porosity. Compared with 2%-4% borax, 0.12% PBTCA provided comparable setting control, higher fluidity, and better strength retention at a substantially lower dosage. Mechanistically, PBTCA modifies the early ionic environment through PBTCA-Mg²⁺ interactions, while its proposed association at MgO-solution interfaces retards further MgO dissolution and MKP formation without terminating hydration.

Green diesel-like hydrocarbon production by H2-free catalytic deoxygenation of oleic acid via Ni/MgO-Al2O3 catalysts: Effect of the metal loading amount

Feng Shi,Hongyuan Wang,Yifei Chen,Yanling Lu,Defa Hou,Can Liu,Yi Lu,Xu Lin,Xiaoqin Yang,Zhifeng Zheng,Yunwu Zheng

To develop an efficient and feasible catalyst for converting inedible vegetable oil to green biodiesel via a one-step decarboxylation process, a series of Ni-based MgO-Al 2 O 3 catalysts with different active Ni species were fabricated by adjusting the various Ni loading amounts (2.5–20%) and applied to the catalytic deoxygenation of OA to generate green biodiesel. Additionally, the structure-property relationship, deactivation mechanism and regeneration performance were also evaluated via various characterization technologies (XRD, BET, NH 3 -TPD, H 2 -TPR, XPS, SEM-EDX, HRTEM, TGA, Raman as well as GC/MS and UV-fluorescence spectra). The experimental results indicated that Ni introduction obviously enhanced the conversion ratio. Ni (10%)/MgO-Al 2 O 3 catalysts exhibited excellent catalytic performance with the highest HCs (95.12%), olefin content (57.37%) and green biodiesel content (75.90%) due to mild Brønsted-rich acidity sites, lower reduction temperature, higher active metallic Ni species content, suitable oxygen vacancy content and favorable texture properties via the decarbonylation reaction pathway. Furthermore, lower Ni loading was beneficial to gasoline and bioaviation fuel generation due to higher Brønsted-rich acidity sites and total acid amount, which boosted C-C scission by cracking reaction, and higher Ni content facilitated biodiesel formation. Additionally, Ni (10%)/MgO-Al 2 O 3 catalysts showed excellent reusability and regeneration due to Ni active species, but these advantages were slightly decreased (HCs: from 95.12% to 61.63%; biodiesel: from 75.90% to 57.52%) due to coke deposition and metal active species leaching and oxidation .

On the high performance of a core-shell structured CaO-CuO/MgO@Al2O3 material in calcium looping integrated with chemical looping combustion (CaL-CLC)

Jinchen Ma,Daofeng Mei,Weiwei Peng,Xin Tian,Danyan Ren,Haibo Zhao

Calcium looping (CaL) is extensively used in post-combustion capture of CO 2 and sorption-enhanced steam methane reforming because of its advantages of low cost and theoretically high CO 2 -capture capacity. Despite this, unstable reactivity of sorbent (CaO) and significant heat requirement for CaCO 3 calcination were always encountered in CaL. To address the aforementioned issues, a core-shell structured CaO-CuO/MgO@Al 2 O 3 sorbent (CCMA for short) was synthesized via the self-assembly template synthesis (SATS) method, and systematically investigated in terms of carbonation, calcination-reduction and oxidation cycles. In comparison to wet-mixing CaO-CuO material (CC), MgO-supported CaO-CuO (CCM) and Al 2 O 3 -supported CaO-CuO (CCA), the CCMA performed the highest CO 2 uptake capacity, which was quite stable at around 0.08 [g CO 2 ∙(g material) −1 ] in the 30 cyclic tests. In calcination-reduction stage, CaO in CCMA can be fully recovered by the decomposition of CaCO 3 , meanwhile the corresponding heat requirement can be compensated by the exothermic reaction between CuO and CH 4 , i.e., thermal neutrality can be achieved by using CCMA. The Cu in reduced CCMA can be subsequently oxidized back to CuO in the oxidation stage with a conversion of 97–98%, which is much higher than CC, CCM and CCA. After cycles, no serious sintering was observed for the CCMA and the measured crushing strength (1.4 N) was sufficient for fluidization, which, in combination with its high reactivity, makes this material very promising for CaL-CLC process.

Preparation of aerogel Mg(OH)2 nanosheets by a combined sol–gel-hydrothermal process and its calcined MgO towards enhanced degradation of paraoxon pollutants

Liu Shisheng,Wei Xiaohui,Lin Song,Guo Minjie

The preparation of MgO nanoparticles with relatively small sizes and highly active surface areas is still a great challenge nowadays. The principal objective of this work was to investigate and optimize the calcined conditions of MgO with smaller sizes and higher surface areas, which contributed to its better degradation ability towards paraoxon pollutants. Firstly, the aerogel Mg(OH) 2 nanosheets with an increased surface area of 349.0 m 2 /g was prepared via a combined sol–gel-hydrothermal method. Then the calcined MgO nanoparticles with different morphology, size dimensions, and specific surface areas were obtained at different calcination temperatures from 400 to 800 °C. The optimized average grain size of MgO obtained at 600 °C was achieved to 8.7 ± 3.2 nm with a relatively high surface area up to 231.4 m 2 /g. Meanwhile, such as-prepared MgO nanoparticles showed an excellent performance towards paraoxon degradation, and the maximum degradation amount of paraoxon-ethyl was up to 57.8 mg/g@90 min at room temperature. The kinetics of degradation was consistent with the pseudo-second-order model ( R 2  > 0.99). Such excellent degradation capacity was derived from more generations of superoxide radical (•O 2 − ) sites as revealed by using the nitro blue tetrazolium (NBT) as a probe. The results indicated that the MgO nanoparticles reported herein could be an effective candidate for the environmental remediation of organophosphorus toxin pollutants due to their facile scale-up, low cost, eco-friendly characteristic, and high removal efficiency.

Enhanced microwave dielectric properties of spinel-garnet ceramics based on MgO-Al2O3-Y2O3 ternary systems: A study on solid solutions and composite synergistic strategies

Jian Li,Jia Liu,Yeqing He,Xiaohan Zhang,Yanxiang Jiang,Yang Wang,Wei Sun,Yuanyuan Zhou,Walther Glaubitt,Futian Liu,Haitao Wu,Fei Wang,Ling Li

High-performance dielectric ceramics are vital for next-generation microwave devices, requiring advanced doping and composite strategies to enhance material properties. The (1- x )MgAl 2 O 4 - x Y 3 Al 5 O 12 composite ceramics were found in the MgO-Al 2 O 3 -Y 2 O 3 pseudoternary phase diagram and synthesized via solid-phase reaction. The two phases coexist to improve grain size distribution and achieve a low eutectic temperature, allowing x  = 0.1–0.7 samples to gain a dense microstructure ( ρ  > 96 %) when sintered at 1650–1670 °C. The semi-coherent interface, coupled with the Mg 2+ /Y 3+ cation transition zone, promotes the formation of a partial solid solution, thereby alleviating interfacial stress at the grain boundaries between MgAl 2 O 4 and Y 3 Al 5 O 12 . Notably, the 0.3MgAl 2 O 4 -0.7Y 3 Al 5 O 12 ceramic exhibits satisfying microwave dielectric properties: ε r  = 10.1 ± 0.24, Q  ×  f  = 195,000 ± 12,000 GHz, and τ f  = −11.9 ppm/°C. In addition to phase composition and microstructure, the enhanced performance can be attributed to the optimized crystal structure. The partial substitution of Y 3+ by Mg 2+ with a smaller radius induced the “rattling” effect and abnormal large permittivity in the [YO 8 ] site. The 27 Al NMR spectra revealed an increase in the Mg-Al inversion degree in the Mg-deficient spinel structure, resulting in the elevated total covalency of the Al-O bond. The structural changes corresponded to a decrease in intrinsic dielectric loss in Mg-Al spinel and an increase in τ f in the Y-Al garnet phase. These findings indicate the (1- x )MgAl 2 O 4 - x Y 3 Al 5 O 12 ceramics have promising applications in the field of HTCC millimeter wave communications.

Injectable and high-strength PLGA/CPC loaded ALN/MgO bone cement for bone regeneration by facilitating osteogenesis and inhibiting osteoclastogenesis in osteoporotic bone defects

Lei Huang,Peihao Cai,Mengxuan Bian,Jieqin Yu,Lan Xiao,Shunyi Lu,Jiayi Wang,Weisin Chen,Guanjie Han,Xingdong Xiang,Xin Liu,Libo Jiang,Yulin Li,Jian Zhang

Osteoporosis (OP) can result in slower bone regeneration than the normal condition due to the imbalance between osteogenesis and osteoclastogenesis, making osteoporotic bone defects healing a significant clinical challenge. Calcium phosphate cement (CPC) is a promising bone substitute material due to its good osteoinductive activity, however, the drawbacks such as fragility, slow degradation rate and incapability to control bone loss restrict its application in osteoporotic bone defects treatment. Currently, we developed the PLGA electrospun nanofiber sheets to carry alendronate (ALN) and magnesium oxide nanoparticle (nMgO) into CPC, therefore, to obtain a high-strength bone cement (C/AM-PL/C). The C/AM-PL/C bone cement had high mechanical strength, anti-washout ability, good injection performance and drug sustained release capacity. More importantly, the C/AM-PL/C cement promoted the osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells and neovascularization via the release of Mg 2+ (from nMgO) and Ca 2+ (during the degradation of CPC), and inhibited osteoclastogenesis via the release of ALN in vitro . Moreover, the injection of C/AM-PL/C cement significantly improved bone healing in an OP model with femur condyle defects in vivo . Altogether, the injectable C/AM-PL/C cement could facilitate osteoporotic bone regeneration, demonstrating its capacity as a promising candidate for treatment of osteoporotic bone defects.

Effect of Zn on performance of Ni/Al2O3–MgO catalyst for dry reforming of methane: enhancing activity and remarkably suppressing graphitization of carbonaceous deposit

Yang Jie,Fang Hailong,Jiang Huanjin,Wang Wenhao,Chen Jixiang

MgO–Al 2 O 3 -supported metallic Ni and bimetallic Ni–Zn catalysts (referred as Ni/MgAl and Ni x Zn/MgAl with the Ni/Zn atomic ratio of x , respectively) were prepared by the coprecipitation method, and their performance for methane dry reforming (DRM) was tested on an atmospheric quartz fixed-bed. The XRD, magnetic measurement, H 2 -TPR, TEM/EDS and XPS results demonstrate that metallic Ni and Ni–Zn alloy form in Ni/MgAl and Ni x Zn/MgAl, respectively. With reducing the Ni/Zn atomic ratio, the amount of surface Ni sites decreases, while the CO 2 adsorption capacity and strength increase due to the presence of Zn. Ni x Zn/MgAl gives higher activity than Ni/MgAl for DRM, mainly due to the suppression of carbon deposition and graphitization on Ni–Zn alloy and the enhanced adsorption of CO 2 . Under the condition of 800 °C, CH 4 /CO 2 molar ratio of 1 and weight hourly space velocity of 20,000 mL g cat −1  h −1 , Ni/MgAl gives the CH 4 and CO 2 conversions of 76% and 80%, respectively. With decreasing Ni/Zn atomic ratio from 7 to 2, the CH 4 and CO 2 conversions on Ni x Zn/MgAl first increase and then decrease, and Ni 5 Zn/MgAl has the highest activity with the CH 4 and CO 2 conversions of 81% and 87%, respectively. During the time on stream of 100 h at 800 °C, Ni 5 Zn/MgAl exhibits better stability than Ni/MgAl, mainly ascribed to its less amount of filamentous graphite carbon. In all, the formation of Ni–Zn alloy enhances the catalyst activity and remarkably suppresses the graphitization of carbonaceous deposit.

Fabrication, Crystalline Behavior, Mechanical Property and In-Vivo Degradation of Poly(l–lactide) (PLLA)–Magnesium Oxide Whiskers (MgO) Nano Composites Prepared by In-Situ Polymerization

Hui Liang,Yun Zhao,Jinjun Yang,Xiao Li,Xiaoxian Yang,Yesudass Sasikumar,Zhiyu Zhou,Minfang Chen

The present work focuses on the preparation of poly(l–lactide)–magnesium oxide whiskers (PLLA–MgO) composites by the in-situ polymerization method for bone repair and implant. PLLA–MgO composites were evaluated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and solid-state13C and1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). It was found that the whiskers were uniformly dispersed in the PLLA matrix through the interfacial interaction bonding between PLLA and MgO; thereby, the MgO whisker was found to be well-distributed in the PLLA matrix, and biocomposites with excellent interface bonding were produced. Notably, the MgO whisker has an effect on the crystallization behavior and mechanical properties; moreover, the in vivo degradation of PLLA–MgO composites could also be adjusted by MgO. These results show that the whisker content of 0.5 wt % and 1.0 wt % exhibited a prominent nucleation effect for the PLLA matrix, and specifically 1.0 wt % MgO was found to benefit the enhanced mechanical properties greatly. In addition, the improvement of the degrading process of the composite illustrated that the MgO whisker can effectively regulate the degradation of the PLLA matrix as well as raise its bioactivity. Hence, these results demonstrated the promising application of PLLA–MgO composite to serve as a biomedical material for bone-related repair. Keywords:PLLA–MgO whiskers composites;in-situ polymerization;bone repair and fixation;mechanical properties and crystallization behavior;regulating in-vivo degradation

Pd/Mg(OH)2/MgO–ZrO2 Nanocomposite Systems for Highly Efficient Suzuki–Miyaura Coupling Reaction at Room Temperature: Implications for Low-Carbon Green Organic Synthesis

Lijing Zhang,Jiaqi Han,Yuchao Wang,Wenbo Yang,Shengyang Tao

Achieving a room-temperature Suzuki–Miyaura coupling (SMC) with high efficiency is of great significance to the development of low-carbon organic synthesis. Nevertheless, it is still a great challenge to construct a promising nanocatalyst with high activity for room-temperature SMC reaction. In this paper, a strong alkaline-supported nanocatalyst Pd/Mg(OH)2/MgO–ZrO2 was rationally developed based on MgO–ZrO2 hybrid nanofibers. Physicochemical characterizations present that the in situ conversion of MgO to Mg(OH)2 on the surface of the nanofibers results in a great increase in surface alkalinity of the carrier. The strong alkalinity can greatly accelerate the oxidation addition and transmetalation of the SMC process, resulting in the obvious reduction of activation energy of the reaction (Ea = 9.0 kJmol–1 for Ph–Br). The coupling conversion can reach up to 100% at room temperature within 8 min with a maximum TOF > 6516 h–1. It also shows an excellent performance in substrate applicability and chlorobenzene activation. The rational design of a high-basicity catalyst for room-temperature SMC will be a rewarding attempt for the development of low-carbon green organic synthesis.

Buffer effect of MgO on Na2SO3 to stabilize S(IV) for the enhancement in simultaneous absorption of NOx and SO2 from non-ferrous smelting gas

Huang Wenjun,Li Sichao,Wang Hongbin,Cui Peng,Xu Haomiao,Cheng Can,Qu Zan,Yan Naiqiang

Oxidation–reduction-absorption based on sulfite is a promising process for simultaneous removal of NO x and SO 2 . However, excessive oxidation of sulfite and competitive absorption between NO x and SO 2 limit its application. A matching strategy between antioxidants and alkaline agents has been proposed to solve these problems and enhance the absorption process. The comparison results of inhibitors showed that hydroquinone exhibited long-term high-efficiency inhibition of S(IV) (SO 3 2- /HSO 3 - ) oxidation. The comparison of alkaline agents showed that the Na 2 SO 3 solution with heterogeneous mixture of MgO and hydroquinone exhibited better absorption performance than that with other combinations. The absorption amounts of NO x in 0.15 mol/L Na 2 SO 3 50 mL solution added 0.1% hydroquinone (HQ) with 0.09 mol/L MgO were 2.24 mmol, which improved 5 times than that without additives. In addition, studies on the influence of pH showed that the pH of MgO mixture could be stabilized at 9–10 for a long time, while the pH of Na 2 CO 3 mixture decreased faster. Further studies suggested that the hydration of MgO resulted in the solution with MgO keeping high pH. This is also the main reason why the combination of MgO and hydroquinone is superior to the combination of Na 2 CO 3 and hydroquinone in desulfurization and denitration performance.

Green synthesized MgO combined with dielectric barrier discharge plasma enhanced phosphorus (P) recovery from livestock wastewater: A dual approach for management of wastewater and P resources

Yuan Luo,Yaru Peng,Pengcheng Yan,Miaoqu Wang,Zhibo Zhang,Guangzhou Qu,Esmat F. Ali,Peter S. Hooda,Jörg Rinklebe,Manlin Li,Sabry M. Shaheen,Ronghua Li

Phosphorus (P) recovery from wastewater using integrated techniques i.e., adsorption combined with advanced oxidation technologies is a novel approach for cleaning wastewater and preventing eutrophication. This approach, however, has not been extensively studied, particularly in the context of real wastewater applications. In this study, a green biomass-based sol-gel method was developed using potato starch (PS) and MgCl 2 ·6H 2 O to synthesize MgO (PS-MgO). The unique synthesis method resulted in PS-MgO composed predominantly of spherical particles with an average size of about 103 nm and exhibited superior P adsorption performance compared to commercial MgO materials (GH-MgO and AD-MgO). The Langmuir maximum P adsorption capacity (mg/g) of the PS-MgO was 429.4, while that of the commercial GH-MgO and AD-MgO was 341.3 and 421.7, respectively, at the solution pH 7.0. The kinetic model fitting demonstrated that the adsorption rate of PS-MgO was faster than the two commercial MgOs. Importantly, PS-MgO can maintain a high P adsorption capacity across a wide pH range (425 mg/g at pH 5.0 and 369 mg/g at pH 11.0), whereas the P adsorption capacities of GH-MgO (153 at pH 5.0 and 297 at pH 11.0) and AD-MgO (422 at pH 5.0 and 200 at pH 11.0) were more pH-dependent. In addition, PS-MgO exhibits high selectivity for P capture in solutions containing coexisting ions, and the P-loaded PS-MgO can efficiently release P through acid or base treatment, highlighting its potential for reuse as a fertilizer. To enhance P recovery from real livestock wastewater, the dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma technology was combined with MgO adsorption. The P recovery capacity of MgOs from livestock wastewater increased 1.4–1.7 times after DBD plasma treatment, attributed to the degradation of aromatic proteins and microbial metabolites. These findings provide new insights into the design of efficient and environmentally friendly materials for P recovery, while also demonstrating the potential of integrating advanced oxidation technologies with adsorption processes.

Studies on the effect of La2O3 and Fe2O3 on the microstructure and high viscosity of CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 system assisted by quantum chemistry ab initio calculations

Zhuoqing An,Xiaolong Ni,Zhuang Ma,Yuan Gao,Jiajing Chen

To investigate the effects of La 2 O 3 and Fe 2 O 3 on the structure and high viscosity of the CaO-MgO-Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 (CMAS) glass system, the microstructure was analyzed using in-situ high-temperature Raman spectroscopy, and the viscosity was measured by high temperature hot-stage. A series of cluster models representing aluminosilicate systems modified by La and Fe ions were constructed, followed by geometric optimization and Raman spectral simulation via quantum chemistry ab initio calculations. The results indicates that the effects of La 2 O 3 and Fe 2 O 3 on both vibrational wavenumber and Raman scattering cross-section (RSCS) followed the order: La < (La + Fe) < Fe. The addition of La 2 O 3 and Fe 2 O 3 loose the glass network structure, and led to a progressive rise in the relative content of Q 0 , Q 1 , and Q 2 units, accompanied by a notable decrease in Q 3 and Q 4 units. Consequently, the high viscosity and viscous flow activation energy decrease with the addition of La 2 O 3 and Fe 2 O 3 , but Fe 2 O 3 has a more pronounced effect. Furthermore, based on the NBO/T for characterizing the microstructure, the relationship between viscosity and microstructure is quantitatively analyzed.
