Graphical S‘O’ much win with MXene : A facile method is reported to produce ultrathin Ti 3 C 2 MXene functionalized with oxygen as an electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction. The terminal O on the basal plane increases the number of active sites for electrocatalysis. This combined with the high surface area and conductivity enables the O-functionalized MXene to show enhanced electrocatalytic performance for hydrogen evolution. Two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal carbides (MXenes) are widely adopted as potential electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) owing to their metallic conductivity, rich tunable surface chemistry, and atomic thickness with highly exposed active sites. Previously published theoretical results indicate that MXenes functionalized entirely with oxygen have lower Δ G H* for HER. However, MXenes contain many terminal F groups on the basal plane, which is detrimental to the HER. Herein, the development of an ultrathin Ti 3 C 2 MXene nanosheet fully functionalized with oxygen is reported for the HER. The obtained oxygen-functionalized Ti 3 C 2 (Ti 3 C 2 O x ) exhibits a much higher HER activity (190 mV at 10 mA cm −2 ) than that of Ti 3 C 2 T x (T=F, OH, and O). The improved HER performance is attributed to the highly active O sites on the basal plane of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXenes. This study paves way for electrocatalytic applications of MXene materials by tuning their surface functional groups.

Graphical Flexible freestanding hybrid rGO/MXene films with enhanced Li-ion storage capacity are fabricated by vacuum-assisted filtration method followed by a simple thermal treatment. In the hybrid films, reduced graphene oxide nanosheets act as a binder, which bridges electrochemically active conducting MXene particles. The effect of the surface functional group (-OH) on Li-storage performance of MXenes is evaluated. Two-dimensional transition-metal carbides called MXenes are emerging electrode materials for energy storage due to their metallic electrical conductivity and low ion diffusion barrier. In this work, we combined Ti 2 CT x MXene with graphene oxide (GO) followed by a thermal treatment to fabricate flexible rGO/Ti 2 CT r film, in which electrochemically active rGO and Ti 2 CT r nanosheets impede the stacking of layers and synergistically interact producing ionically and electronically conducting electrodes. The effect of the thermal treatment on the electrochemical performance of Ti 2 CT x is evaluated. As anode for Li-ion storage, the thermally treated Ti 2 CT r possesses a higher capacity in comparison to as-prepared Ti 2 CT x . The freestanding hybrid rGO/Ti 2 CT r films exhibit excellent reversible capacity (700 mAh g −1 at 0.1 Ag −1 ), cycling stability and rate performance. Additionally, flexible rGO/Ti 3 C 2 T r films are made using the same method and also present improved capacity. Therefore, this study provides a simple, yet effective, approach to combine rGO with different MXenes, which can enhance their electrochemical properties for Li-ion batteries.

Boron nanosheets with high surface hydrophilicity and proton conductivity are promising for ionic devices. However, their poor electrical conductivity has severely limited their applications in resistive-type electronic devices. Herein, electrically conductive three-dimensional boron/MXene hollow spheres were prepared by a freeze-drying-assisted self-assembly method. The composites were fabricated into resistive-type humidity sensors, which showed high sensitivity with a three-orders-of-magnitude variation in resistance, a wide detection range (11–97%), fast response and recovery time (4 s/3.8 s), and long-term stability. The excellent humidity sensing performance can be attributed to the abundant hydrophilic groups on both the inner and outer surfaces of open spheres as well as to a coupled hole/proton conducting process. As a proof of concept, real-time remote monitoring of human respiration was achieved by integrating our humidity sensor with a Bluetooth module, enabling differentiation of breathing frequency as rapid as 0.8 s.

Electrochemical disinfection via in-situ H 2 O 2 generation through two-electron oxygen reduction (2e - -ORR) is deemed as an alternative to traditional chemical dosing disinfection methods. However, its disinfection performance is still confined by its low H 2 O 2 yield, which largely relies on the electronic structure of cathode along with O 2 mass transport, especially for immersed cathode. To tackle this concern, we developed a pulsed-assisted MXene-based electrochemical system with both electronic effect and mass transport being taken into consideration. MXene-based cathode (F-Ti 3 C 2 MXene/CF) was designed by electrodeposition monolayer Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene onto different substrates, which endowed surface groups good for 2e - -ORR. Firstly, electrodeposition parameters were investigated including electrodeposition voltage, time and two porous substrates (carbon-based carbon fiber and metal-base nickel foam). Then, H 2 O 2 production was evaluated by pulsed-assisted MXene-based electrochemical configuration, where H 2 O 2 achieved an unprecedented 16.87 mg/L under the conditions of a pulse potential of −0.6 V vs SCE, pulse width of 1 s, and a duty cycle of 50 %. It witnessed a 314.7 % upsurge compared to the constant mode system. This enhancement could be attributed to pulse primarily enhancing the non-Faradaic process by facilitating electron transfer at the three-phase interface on the electrode surface and promoting mass transfer of reactants. In the final section, a 99.99 % deactivation efficiency against E. coli within 60 min was obtained.

Exploiting novel materials with high specific capacities is crucial for the progress of advanced energy storage devices. Intentionally constructing functional heterostructures based on a variety of two-dimensional (2D) substances proves to be an extremely efficient method for capitalizing on the shared benefits of these materials. By elaborately designing the structure, a greatly escalated steadiness can be achieved throughout electrochemical cycles, along with boosted electron transfer kinetics. In this study, chemical vapor deposition (CVD) was utilized to alter the surface composition of multilayer Ti3C2TxMXene, contributing to contriving various layered heterostructure materials through a precise adjustment of the reaction temperature. The optimal composite materials at a reaction temperature of 500 °C (defined as MX500), incorporating MXene as the conductive substrate, exhibited outstanding stability and high coulombic efficiency during electrochemical cycling. Meanwhile, the reactive sites are increased by using TiS2and TiO2at the heterogeneous interfaces, which sustains a specific capacity of 449 mAh g−1after 200 cycles at a current density of 0.1 A g−1and further demonstrates their exceptional electrochemical characteristics. Additionally, the noted pseudocapacitive properties, like MXene materials, further highlight the diverse capabilities of intuitive material design. This study illuminates the complex details of surface modification in multilayer MXene and offers a crucial understanding of the strategic creation of heterostructures, significantly impacting sophisticated electrochemical applications.

Two-dimensional (2D) MXene-based membranes combine unique atomic thickness, well-arranged interlayer channel, and have received growing attention in molecular/ion separation and transport. The low permeability and instability of MXene-based membranes in water purification enable it difficult to be utilized in practical processing. Here, we present a high water-permeability and long-lived MXene membrane by assembling 2D heterostructured MXene/COF flakes on macroporous polymeric support. The intercalation of COFs into the interlayer of Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets not only increases the adjacent interlayer space , but also provides abundant molecular sieving pores, thereby enhancing the permeability of MXene membrane. While being applied in removal of organic dyes, the MXene/COF hybrid membrane exhibits a superior water permeance (up to ∼ 300 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 ), and several satisfactorily rejections for different dyes (98.2% for congo red, 98.7% for chrome black T, 96.4% for methyl blue, and 97.2% for methyl orange) are simultaneously achieved. Additionally, the covalent anchoring of COFs on MXene surface can greatly improve the stability. The reduction of hydrophilicity of MXene surface mitigates water molecular absorption on the fluid channel wall and endow the membrane with well swell tolerance in aqueous environment. Such high performance MXene/COF hybrid membrane is mainly caused by the physical sieving mechanism supported by the repulsive interaction, as well as adsorption capability originating from porous COFs. This work provides an alternative approach for the fabrication of high performance MXene-based membranes used for highly effective dye wastewater treatment , and extends the application of 2D membranes in desalination , pollutant treatments, and resource recovery.

Clozapine is vital for managing schizophrenia and other psychiatric disorders. As a potent medication with risks of severe side effects, accurate detection ensures effective treatment monitoring, patient safety, and optimization of therapeutic outcomes. Herein, niobium carbide two-dimensional transition metal carbides (Nb 2 CT x MXene) was prepared by etching niobium aluminum carbide (Nb 2 AlC), which was next partially oxidized by a hydrothermal method to niobium oxide (Nb 2 O 5 )/Nb 2 CT x and ultrasonically bound to carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-COOH). It was modified onto a glassy carbon electrode for the detection of the antipsychotic drug clozapine ingested by humans. The morphology and electrochemical properties of MXene-based nanocomposite electrode were verified by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, Raman, cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance characterization methods. The results showed that electrode responded well to clozapine solutions, with good linearity ( R 2 = 0.9979 and 0.9995) of the peak currents with clozapine concentrations (0.01–1.0 μM and 1.0–10.0 μM) and that this sensor had good immunity, repeatability, reproducibility and stability. The limit of detection was 8.38 nM and the recovery was 92.5 % ~ 106.5 % in real serum and urine samples. The MXene-based sensors offer excellent analytical performance and hold promise for cost-effective generalisation to the detection of nanomolar clozapine in a variety of clinical applications.

Conductive hydrogels have made them the material of choice for designing flexible sensors for elasticity, strain sensitivity, and excellent electrical conductivity . However, conductive hydrogels display poor tensile and cyclic stability due to the weak interfacial interaction between the gel network scaffold and the rigid conducting material. To solve this problem, in this work, we designed a DN network conductive hydrogel consisting of physically crosslinked silk protein and polyacrylamide, with silk protein molecular chains and polyacrylamide molecular chains interspersed with each other. The hydrogel demonstrated superb tensile properties and cycling stability, and the introduction of MXene organic dispersion further enhanced the hydrogel's mechanical properties, electrical conductivity, and frost resistance. SF/PAM/MXene hydrogel demonstrated excellent tensile properties (4960%, 120 kPa), stability under 1000% cyclic stretching. The hydrogel has high sensitivity as a flexible sensor that can sense pressure changes and monitor the body's weak motion signal.

Ti 3 C 2 T x MXenes have emerged as promising candidates for energy storage applications due to their two-dimensional structure, metallic conductivity, tunable surface functionalities, and intrinsic pseudocapacitive charge storage. This study explores the hydrothermal synthesis of GaOOH/Ti 3 C 2 T x composites using gallium nitrate as the gallium precursor. The incorporation of GaOOH not only expands the interlayer spacing of Ti 3 C 2 T x , facilitating more efficient electrolyte ion migration, but also enhances the material's energy storage capacity by introducing additional active sites and augmenting pseudocapacitance. As an electrode material in supercapacitors, GaOOH/Ti 3 C 2 T x composites, prepared with a 0.06 M gallium source concentration, achieve a remarkable specific capacitance of 542.1 F·g −1 , surpassing that of pristine Ti 3 C 2 T x (305 F·g −1 ), with a minimal degradation of only 3.4 % after 5000 charge-discharge cycles. This research offers valuable insights into the electrochemical behavior of GaOOH/Ti 3 C 2 T x composites and highlights the role of GaOOH in enhancing the performance of these materials. The results underscore the potential of combining metal hydroxides with MXenes for advanced supercapacitor applications.

Traditional wound patches are primarily designed to provide protection, maintain moisture, and foster a healing environment. However, current flexible wound patches face challenges related to self-healing capabilities, antimicrobial performance, and stable sensing functions. To address these challenges, this study harnesses the synergistic potential of aqueous MXene nanosheets and quercetin-modified waterborne polyurethane (Que-WPU) to fabricate an innovative film patch. The film patch exhibits stable adhesion to human skin and shows significant inhibitory effects on Staphylococcus aureus due to the natural antibacterial agent quercetin, with a zone of inhibition that reaches 4 mm. Furthermore, the antibacterial efficiency is further enhanced to 100% because of the excellent photothermal properties of MXene under near-infrared laser irradiation. Meanwhile, the film patch possesses stable scavenging activity against DPPH and ABTS+ free radicals and exhibits good blood compatibility and cytocompatibility with an in vitro hemolysis rate of 4.7% and negligible toxicity to HaCaT cells. It also displays a robust self-healing performance, completely repairing scratches within 2 min. Additionally, the film patch can detect clear and stable sensing signals under continuous human body part movement cycles, with sensing sensitivity (Gauge Factor) of 2.1. In summary, these results underscore the immense potential of MXene/Que-WPU composite materials in wound healing and tissue engineering applications.

To obtain high-performance electromagnetic microwave (EM) absorption materials with broad effective absorption bandwidth ( EAB ) and reduced thickness, designing structures has proved to be a promising way. Herein, ultra-broadband multilayer bidirectional MXene/polyimide EM absorption aerogels containing multi-structures on scales ranging from the micro- to the macroscale are produced with the aid of electric and temperature fields. On the microscale, under the action of electric force and temperature gradient, the ordered structures made of aligned Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets and the microscale layered aerogel walls enable the bidirectional aerogel to achieve a wide EAB of 8.58 GHz at a thickness of 2.1 mm. This is ascribed to the numerous aligned nanosheets and layered aerogel walls perpendicular to the incident EMs, facilitating the conversion of electromagnetic energy into electrical energy. Furthermore, on the macroscale, the multilayer bidirectional aerogel with non-gradient structures effectively resolves the conflict between impedance matching and energy loss, resulting in an ultrawide EAB of 9.41 GHz at a thickness of 3 mm. This innovative design of electric-field-assisted multilayer bidirectional aerogels with multiscale structural coupling may provide feasible and effective pathways for the development of advanced EM absorption materials.
