Adsorptive removal of organic chloride from model jet fuel by Na-LSX zeolite: Kinetic, equilibrium and thermodynamic studies

Rui Ma,Jianhua Zhu,Bencheng Wu,Xiaohui Li

The commercial Na-loaded low-silica X zeolite (Na-LSX) was used as adsorbent for the removal of organic chloride compound (5-chloro-2-methylaniline) from model jet fuel. The Na-LSX adsorbent was characterized by XRD, BET, FT-IR, SEM-EDS, and XRF, respectively. A series of experiments were carried out to investigate the adsorption performance of organic chloride onto Na-LSX zeolite by batch adsorption experiments. In the batch experiments, some key operational parameters, such as temperature, adsorption time, initial concentration of organic chloride in model jet sample as well as the dosage of adsorbent were investigated. Equilibrium isotherms were analyzed by using Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Dubinin–Radushkevich (D–R) adsorption models. The pseudo-first-order, the pseudo-second-order and intra-particle diffusion models were used to fit the kinetics data. The results revealed that Langmuir isotherm provided a better fit to the experimental data than other isotherms. And it was also found that the adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic equation well. The thermodynamic analysis results indicated that the adsorption process was an endothermic, feasible and spontaneous process under the specified conditions. Above mentioned investigation results implied that the Na-LSX zeolite would be an effective adsorbent for adsorption removal of organic chloride from distillate of crude oil.

Effect of film multi-scale structure on the water vapor permeability in hydroxypropyl starch (HPS)/Na-MMT nanocomposites

Siyuan Liu,Panfu Cai,Xiaoxi Li,Ling Chen,Lin Li,Bing Li

To improve the water vapor resistance of starch-based films, Na-MMT (Na-montmorillonite) as nanofillers were fabricated into hydroxypropyl starch and the multi-scale structural changes (including intermolecular interaction, short-range conformation, long-range ordered structure and the aggregated structure of the film) were revealed. The elongation of the water vapor molecule pathway by tortuous path is generally recognized as the main reason for the improvement of water resistance. However this study observed the lowest water vapor permeability (WVP) was at the 3% Na-MMT/hydroxypropyl starch (HPS) ratio instead of 5% even nanofillers were partially exfoliated at both ratio. Except for the “tortuous path” caused by nanofillers, this observation proposed that the short-range conformation of HPS chains, long-range ordered structure and the aggregated structure likely influenced the water barrier property. The relationship between WVP and multi-scale structure of the film was investigated. The results suggested that a good balance of short-range conformationin the amorphous region, long-range ordered structure and the aggregated structure of the film was required for the improvement of water vapor barrier property.

Deciphering the structural and kinetic factors in lithium titanate for enhanced performance in Li+/Na+ dual-cation electrolyte

Yue Chen,Shaohua Zhang,Dongni Zhao,Zhixian You,Yubiao Niu,Liqiang Zeng,Nagarathinam Mangayarkarasi,Oleg V. Kolosov,Jianming Tao,Jiaxin Li,Yingbin Lin,Yongping Zheng,Long Zhang,Zhigao Huang

The widespread application of Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 (LTO) anode in lithium-ion batteries has been hindered by its relatively low energy density. In this study, we investigated the capacity enhancement mechanism of LTO anode through the incorporation of Na + cations in an Li + -based electrolyte (dual-cation electrolyte). LTO thin film electrodes were prepared as conductive additive-free and binder-free model electrodes. Electrochemical performance assessments revealed that the dual-cation electrolyte boosts the reversible capacity of the LTO thin film electrode, attributable to the additional pseudocapacitance and intercalation of Na + into the LTO lattice. Operando Raman spectroscopy validated the insertion of Li + /Na + cations into the LTO thin film electrode, and the cation migration kinetics were confirmed by ab initio molecular dynamic (AIMD) simulation and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, which revealed that the incorporation of Na + reduces the activation energy of cation diffusion within the LTO lattice and improves the rate performance of LTO thin film electrodes in the dual-cation electrolyte. Furthermore, the interfacial charge transfer resistance in the dual-cation electrolyte, associated with ion de-solvation processes and traversal of the cations in the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer, are evaluated using the distribution of relaxation time, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Our approach of performance enhancement using dual-cation electrolytes can be extrapolated to other battery electrodes with sodium/lithium storage capabilities, presenting a novel avenue for the performance enhancement of lithium/sodium-ion batteries.

Self-limited and reversible surface hydration of Na2Fe(SO4)2 cathodes for long-cycle-life Na-ion batteries

Zhilin Zheng,Xiaoqiao Li,Yong Wang,Yunlong Zhang,Yufeng Jiang,Yu-Shi He,Chao Niu,Haiying Che,Linsen Li,Zi-Feng Ma

Air stability is a crucial factor in the practical application of a battery material, as it profoundly affects the material's preparation, storage, and electrode fabrication processes. Sodium iron sulfate cathodes, despite their attractive attributes in cost and electrochemical performance, are widely believed to be unstable upon air exposure because of the sulfate group. Here we report remarkable air-stability of the Na 2 Fe(SO 4 ) 2 -based (NFS) cathodes (minimal decay in 20 % RH air for 60 days, 91.9 % capacity retention after 3500 cycles in half cells) and their outstanding cycle performance in practically relevant pouch-type full cells (∼100 Wh kg -1 specific energy, >1000 cycle-life). Although the NFS cathodes do react with moisture H 2 O to produce Na 2 Fe(SO 4 ) 2 ⋅4H 2 O but the hydration is spatially confined at the NFS particles’ surface and not propagating into their bulk. Further, the structural changes are reversible when the surface-hydrated NFS particles are heated in the typical electrode vacuum-drying process, avoiding extra treatment and additional cost. This work reveals the promising properties of the NFS cathode materials towards high-performance and sustainable Na-ion batteries.

PF6- and Na+ Co-intercalation in Graphite Cathode of Sodium Dual-Ion Batteries by Enhanced Surface Concentration Effect

Fan Li,Yong-Feng Shen,Bin He,Wen-Cui Li

Dual-ion batteries are attracting much attention due to the joint participation of anions and cations in the energy storage process. However, this unique battery configuration imposes high demands on the cathode, which typically presents an inferior rate performance. Herein, we employ graphite in different microcrystalline sizes as cathodes, associated with high concentration electrolyte to construct sodium dual-ion batteries. The results of in-situ XRD and Raman evidence that the surface effect is enhanced by suitably small graphite microcrystals, where a greater surface involvement affords more electro-activated regions for the ions. Furthermore, the analysis of sputtering XPS confirms that the PF6- is accompanied by the co-intercalation of Na+ into cathodes by constructing the model of concentration effect, thus accelerating the kinetic process. In conclusion, the co-intercalation of PF6- together with Na+ is demonstrated under the influence of enhanced surface concentration effect in cathodes, and thus the cathodes exhibit a superior rate performance with a capacity of 103.6 mAh g-1 at a rate of 2 C and a rate retention of 94.8% even at 50 C. This work provides new insights to explain the mechanism of ion intercalation in dual-ion batteries and offers a perspective for the construction of high energy storage systems.

The influence of neutral MDP-Na salt on dentin bond performance and remineralization potential of etch-&-rinse adhesive

Li Mingxing,Zheng Haiyan,Xu Yuedan,Qiu Yuan,Wang Yinlin,Jin Xiaoting,Zhang Zhengyi,Zhang Ling,Fu Baiping

Objectives To investigate the effect of neutral 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate salt (MDP-Na) on the dentin bond strength and remineralization potential of etch-&-rinse adhesive. Methods Two experimental etch-&-rinse adhesives were formulated by incorporating 0 wt% (E0) or 20 wt% (E20) neutral MDP-Na into a basic primer. A commercial adhesive, Adper Single Bond 2 (SB, 3 M ESPE), served as the control. Sixty prepared teeth were randomly allocated into three groups ( n  = 20) and bonded using either one of the experimental adhesives or SB. Following 24 h of water storage, the bonded specimens were sectioned into resin-dentin sticks, with four resin-dentin sticks obtained from each tooth for microtensile bond strength (MTBS) test. Half of the sticks from each group were immediately subjected to tensile loading using a microtensile tester at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min, while the other half underwent tensile loading after 6-month incubation in artificial saliva (AS). The degree of conversion (DC) of both the control and experimental adhesives ( n  = 6 in each group) and the adsorption properties of MDP-Na on the dentin organic matrix ( n  = 5 in each group) were determined using Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry. Furthermore, the effectiveness of neutral MDP-Na in promoting the mineralization of two-dimensional collagen fibrils and the adhesive-dentin interface was explored using transmission electron microscopy and selected-area electron diffraction. Two- and one-way ANOVA was employed to assess the impact of adhesive type and water storage on dentin bond strength and the DC (α = 0.05). Results The addition of MDP-Na into the primer increased both the short- and long-term MTBS of the experimental adhesives ( p  = 0.00). No difference was noted in the DC between the control, E0 and E20 groups ( p  = 0.366). The MDP-Na remained absorbed on the demineralized dentin even after thorough rinsing. The intra- and extra-fibrillar mineralization of the two-dimensional collagen fibril and dentin bond hybrid layer was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy and selected-area electron diffraction when the primer was added with MDP-Na. Conclusions The use of neutral MDP-Na results in high-quality hybrid layer that increase the dentin bond strength of etch-&-rinse adhesive and provides the adhesive with remineralizing capability. This approach may represent a suitable bonding strategy for improving the dentin bond strength and durability of etch-&-rinse adhesive.

LiFePO4-Zn battery system for electrochemical extraction of Li+ from salt lake brine with high Na+/Li+ ratio

Qian Zhang,Kang Chen,Xinwen Li,Yanan Wei,Ying Hu,Rongmei Liu,Guixiang Qian,Zhongliang Tian,Chao Yang

Lithium extraction from salt lakes represents a crucial approach to developing lithium resources and plays a vital role in advancing the global energy transition. China possesses abundant lithium resources in its salt lakes. However, the high sodium content present in salt lake brines presents a significant challenge to efficient lithium extraction. This study investigates the capability of the LiFePO 4 -Zn battery system for extracting lithium from salt lake brine with a high Na + /Li + ratio. The system demonstrates a significant rejection effect on Na + and exceptional selectivity for Li + , even in high-concentration sodium ion aqueous solutions. In a chloride aqueous solution containing 0.25 g/L of Li⁺ and 100 g/L of Na⁺, the sodium-to-lithium mass ratio decreased from 400 to 13.52 after three cycles, indicating that the extraction efficiency of Li⁺ achieved reached 90.28 %.

Thermal Enhancement of Upconversion in Sub-10 nm Yb3+/Er3+/Na+ Tridoped Cs2ZrF6 Nanocrystals for Ratiometric Temperature Sensing

Changhe Hu,Xiao Li,Wenfeng Xie,Jie Liu,Huhui Fu,Yaning Zhang,Jingbing Lu,Qi Xiong,Yuanqi Qian,M. Liu

Alkaline zirconium fluorides (A x Zr y F x+y , A = Li, Na, and K), featuring unique crystallographic structures, have recently emerged as a class of attractive hosts for fabricating lanthanide (Ln 3+ )-doped upconversion nanocrystals (UCNCs) that exhibited distinct morphology, upconversion luminescence (UCL) performance, and physicochemical property. In this paper, for the first time the controlled preparation of Yb 3+ /Er 3+ -doped UCNCs is reported based on the trigonal Cs 2 ZrF 6 host, leading to tunable morphology and size of the resulting UCNCs by varying the reaction temperature and time. By further incorporating Na + ions into the Cs 2 ZrF 6 crystal lattice, sub-10 nm Yb 3+ /Er 3+ /Na + tridoped UCNCs with highly improved crystallinity and thus greatly enhanced UCL intensity are obtained. Moreover, these resulting UCNCs display abnormal thermal enhancement of UCL over a temperature range from 333 to 493 K, enabling the fabrication of supersensitive luminescent nanothermometers for temperature sensing. Based on the luminescence intensity ratio of two nonthermally coupled levels (i.e., 4 F 9/2 and 2 H 11/2 ) of Er 3+ , the as-prepared Cs 2 ZrF 6 :Yb/Er/Na UCNCs exhibit an extremely large absolute sensitivity of 177.3% K −1 and a considerably high relative sensitivity of 1.52% K −1 at 333 K. These results unambiguously demonstrate that Cs 2 ZrF 6 is a suitable host material for preparing small-sized Ln 3+ -doped UCNCs as nanothermometer for high-performance ratiometric temperature sensing.

Strategic point defect engineering toward abnormal thermal quenching in Sm3+-doped Na-rich Na1.5La1.5TeO6 phosphors for LEDs applications

Haoran Su,Xinyi Li,Dongze Li,Di Gao,Mengxue Zhang,Yufan Shang,Yanping Liu,Huiling Geng,Xiang Liu,Ruijin Yu

Thermal stability holds particular significance for phosphors intended for LEDs . Abnormal thermal quenching was successfully reached by strategic point defect engineering by inserting Frenkel defects and nonequivalent substitution defects in novel Sm 3+ ions doped Na-rich distorted double perovskite Na 1.5 La 1.5 TeO 6 phosphors. Its integral intensity at 420 K (115.03 %) was far higher than that of room temperature . Besides, the phosphors exhibited a pronounced orange-red emission peak at 644 nm when excited at 404 nm, which was ascribed to the 4 G 5/2 - 6 H 9/2 transition of Sm 3+ ions. The concentration quenching phenomenon resulting from dipole-dipole interactions was observed in the phosphors, and the optimal concentration of dopant Sm 3+ was determined to be 1 mol%. After calculation, it was surprising that the color purity values of all phosphors were not less than 99.9 %. Additionally, the internal quantum efficiency (IQE) reached 65.30 %, and the activation energy ( E a ) of Na 1.5 La 1.5 TeO 6 :1 mol%Sm 3+ was 0.570 eV. Meanwhile, the emission spectrum of the produced orange-red light emitting diodes (LEDs) exhibited a close correspondence with the absorption curves of various plant pigments (chlorophyll b , allophycocyanin, phycocyanin, phytochrome red and far red (P R and P FR )). The prepared white light emitting diodes (WLEDs) possessed low correlated color temperature (CCT) of 4769 K and as high general color rendering index (CRI, R a ) value as 91. In summary, the phosphors presented promising options for plant-cultivating LEDs and high CRI WLEDs based on their superior optical and thermal properties .

Na2CO3-assisted synthesis of Na-doped crystalline/amorphous g-C3N4 S-scheme homojunction photocatalyst for enhanced H2O2 production

Lihong Tan,Xinhe Wu,Jiachao Xu,Mahmoud Sayed,Guohong Wang

The construction of crystalline/amorphous g-C 3 N 4 homojunctions presents a versatile strategy to obtain all-organic homojunction photocatalysts with better interface matching and lower interface charge carrier movement resistance for optimized photocatalytic activity. However, the process entails a complex multi-step workup, which compromises its feasibility. To overcome this challenge, this work provided an innovative Na 2 CO 3 -induced crystallinity modulation strategy to construct a Na-doped crystalline/amorphous g-C 3 N 4 S-scheme homojunction photocatalyst in a single step. The approach involves the initial pre-assembling of melamine and cyanuric acid molecules, and subsequent introduction of Na 2 CO 3 before the calcination. Na 2 CO 3 plays key roles to induce in-situ crystallinity modulation during the calcination and as a source for Na-doping. The prepared g-C 3 N 4 S-scheme homojunction photocatalyst demonstrated a prominent H 2 O 2 -production rate of 444.6 μmol·L –1 ·h –1 , which is 6.1-fold higher than that of bulk g-C 3 N 4 . The enhanced activity was attributed to the synergistic effect of charge carrier separation induced by the S-scheme homojunction system, and the optimized interfacial H 2 O 2 generation kinetics. The latter was fostered by the Na-doping. This study provides an innovative approach for the one-step construction of g-C 3 N 4 S-scheme homojunction and its integration in photocatalytic applications.

Slight compositional variation-induced structural disorder-to-order transition enables fast Na+ storage in layered transition metal oxides

Shi Yuansheng,Jiang Pengfeng,Wang Shicheng,Chen Weixin,Wei Bin,Lu Xueyi,Qian Guoyu,Kan Wang Hay,Chen Huaican,Yin Wen,Sun Yang,Lu Xia

The omnipresent Na + /vacancy orderings change substantially with the composition that inevitably actuate the ionic diffusion in rechargeable batteries. Therefore, it may hold the key to the electrode design with high rate capability. Herein, the influence of Na + /vacancy ordering on Na + mobility is demonstrated firstly through a comparative investigation in P2-Na 2/3 Ni 1/3 Mn 2/3 O 2 and P2-Na 2/3 Ni 0.3 Mn 0.7 O 2 . The large zigzag Na + /vacancy intralayer ordering is found to accelerate Na + migration in P2-type Na 2/3 Ni 1/3 Mn 2/3 O 2 . By theoretical simulations, it is revealed that the Na + ordering enables the P2-type Na 2/3 Ni 1/3 Mn 2/3 O 2 with higher diffusivities and lower activation energies of 200 meV with respect to the P3 one. The quantifying diffusional analysis further prove that the higher probability of the concerted Na + ionic diffusion occurs in P2-type Na 2/3 Ni 1/3 Mn 2/3 O 2 due to the appropriate ratio of high energy ordered Na ions (Na f ) occupation. As a result, the interplay between the Na + /vacancy ordering and Na + kinetic is well understood in P2-type layered cathodes.

Redox state of NAD modulates the activation of Na-bicarbonate cotransporter NBCe1-B via IRBIT and L-IRBIT

Gui Tianxiang,Liu Ying,Fu Mingfeng,Wu Han,Su Pan,Feng Xuhui,Zheng Mengmeng,Huang Zixuan,Luo Xudong,Boron Walter F.,Chen Li-Ming

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) is well known as a coenzyme involved in many redox reactions in cellular energy metabolism, or as a substrate for many NAD + -consuming enzymes, including those that generate the second messenger cyclic ADP-ribose or deacetylate proteins (e.g., histones). The role of NAD in non-catalytic proteins is poorly understood. IRBIT and L-IRBIT (the IRBITs) are two cytosolic proteins that are structurally related to dehydrogenases but lack catalytic activity. Instead, by interacting directly with their targets, the IRBITs modulate the function of numerous proteins with important roles, ranging from Ca 2+ signaling and intracellular pH (pH i ) regulation to DNA metabolism to autophagy. Among the targets of the IRBITs is the Na + -HCO 3 − cotransporter NBCe1-B, which plays a central role in intracellular pH (pH i ) regulation and epithelial electrolyte transport. Here, we demonstrate that NAD modulates NBCe1-B activation by serving as a cofactor of IRBIT or L-IRBIT. Blocking NAD salvage pathway greatly decreases NBCe1-B activation by the IRBITs. Administration of the oxidized form NAD + enhances, whereas the reduced form NADH decreases NBCe1-B activity. Our study represents the first example in which the redox state of NAD, via IRBIT or L-IRBIT, modulates the function of a membrane transport protein. Our findings reveal a new role of NAD and greatly expand our understanding of NAD biology. Because the NAD redox state fluctuates greatly with metabolic status, our work provides insight into how, via the IRBITs, energy metabolism could affect pH i regulation and many other IRBIT-dependent processes.
