A series of MoO3/ZrO2 catalysts were prepared by impregnation method, and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), specific surface area (BET) and temperature-programmed desorption of NH3 (NH3-TPD). The polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was prepared by ring-opening polymerization from D4 and MM with MoO3/ZrO2 catalysts. The effects of MoO3/ZrO2 catalysts preparation conditions on PDMS molecular weight and reaction conversion rate were discussed. Moreover, the effects of reaction conditions on the ring-opening polymerization were also studied. During the preparation of PDMS, the molecular weight of the product can be controlled by adjusting the mass ratio of D4:MM. The MoO3/ZrO2 catalyst was compared with other catalysts during the ring-opening process, and the repeated times of MoO3/ZrO2 catalysts were also studied. The results showed that MoO3/ZrO2 catalyst had more excellent catalytic performance, for ring-opening process, and when the repeated times was more than 5, the catalytic activity decreased significantly. In addition, the kinetics of D4 ring-opening polymerization with the MoO3/ZrO2 catalyst was investigated.

In this study, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), polydopamine (PDA)-modified graphene nanosheets (PDA@GN), and amino-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT-NH 2 ) were employed as the flexible substrate and conductive layers. A three-dimensional (3D) MWCNT-NH 2 /P@GNs/PDMS flexible strain sensor was fabricated via a straightforward template-transfer approach in conjunction with an economical solution-spraying technique. Firstly, during the preparation process, graphene was modified with dopamine hydrochloride. In combination with MWCNT-NH 2 , a synergistic effect was formed, which helped construct an efficient conductive network and consequently improved the charge transfer efficiency of the membrane film. Subsequently, a 3D structured film was fabricated using a mold to further enhance its conductivity. The 3D structured MWCNT-NH 2 /P@GNs/PDMS strain sensor demonstrated remarkable sensitivity gauge factor (GF) of 1.07 (0% < ε < 40%), 2.53 (40% < ε < 80%), and 4.06 (80% < ε < 120%). Additionally, the film demonstrated outstanding stability and durability over 1000 s, as well as stable strain-sensing performance. The resulting film possessed distinctive properties, such as high tensile strain (up to ∼ 120%), outstanding toughness (tensile strength of about 0.60 MPa), and high sensitivity (GF = 4.06). Furthermore, the film exhibited excellent thermal conductivity due to its enhanced electrical conductivity, reaching a temperature of approximately 163.5 ℃ at 24 V. Finally, the 3D structured MWCNT-NH 2 /P@GNs/PDMS strain sensor demonstrated increased sensitivity in detecting electrical signals from different human motions. These advantages allow the sensor to maintain stability and repeatability under strain, giving it broad application prospects in electronic skin, wearable electronics, and health monitoring.

The gas-liquid transport efficiency of porous transport layers (PTLs) in proton exchange membrane electrolyzers (PEMECs) critically influences overall electrolysis performance. Wettability optimization enhances gas-liquid dynamics, and templated modification techniques are used to regulate hydrophilic/hydrophobic properties of PTL, improving gas-liquid distribution and transport pathways. This study investigates the influences of modifier composition and template patterns on the gas-liquid transport behavior electrolytic efficiency of PEMECs. Results showed that compared to polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based systems, a methyltrimethylsilane (MTMS)/hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTMS) composite formed superhydrophobic coating (contact angle θ = 150.3°) on titanium substrates, demonstrating superior interfacial stability and anti-wetting properties. Furthermore, by changing the wettability modification strategy, the effects of hydrophilic region proportions (10 %, 20 %, 30 %) and geometries on electrochemical performance were evaluated. It was shown that the 10 % hydrophobic sample achieved optimal results, with a minimum electrochemical resistance ( R ohm ) of 0.20497 Ω cm 2 at 1.7 V and 0.5 A/cm 2 . Additional experiments on hydrophobic region geometry revealed that circular designs enhance gas-liquid mass transfer by accelerating bubble detachment. These findings advance PTL optimization strategies and offer practical insights for improving PEMEC efficiency and scalability.

Flexible pressure sensors have drawn growing attention in areas like human physiological signal monitoring and human–computer interaction. Nevertheless, it still remains a significant challenge to guarantee their long-term stability while attaining a wide detection range, a minute pressure testing limit, and high sensitivity. Inspired by the wrinkles on animal skins, this paper introduces a flexible pressure sensor with wrinkled microstructures. This sensor is composed of a composite of reduced graphene oxide (rGO), single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). After optimizing the proportion of the composite materials, the flexible pressure sensor was manufactured using highly efficient heat-shrinkable films. It has a sensitivity as high as 15.364 kPa−1. Owing to the wrinkled microstructures, the sensor can achieve an ultra-wide pressure detection range, with the maximum reaching 1150 kPa, and is capable of detecting water wave vibrations at the minimum level. Moreover, the wrinkled microstructures were locked by PDMS. The sensor acquired waterproof performance and its mechanical stability was enhanced. Even after 18,000 cycles of repeated loading and unloading, its performance remained unchanged. By combining with an artificial neural network, high-precision recognition of different sounds and postures when grasping different objects was realized, with the accuracies reaching 98.3333% and 99.1111%, respectively. Through the integration of flexible WIFI, real-time wireless transmission of sensing data was made possible. In general, the studied sensor can facilitate the application of flexible pressure sensors in fields such as drowning monitoring, remote traditional Chinese medicine, and intelligent voice.

To address the global challenges of freshwater scarcity and the growing demand for clean energy, we report a Janus-structured system based on a polyurethane (PU) sponge scaffold for efficient solar-driven desalination and electricity generation. Through sponge modification, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) molecular brushes were integrated with a Janus structure to construct an asymmetric interface featuring a distinct wettability contrast. This design facilitated directional water transport and efficient steam escape pathways, while effectively suppressing contaminant adsorption and pore blockage. Consequently, the device exhibited enhanced solar energy conversion efficiency and effectively achieved simultaneous seawater desalination and electricity generation. Meanwhile, Conductivity measurements confirmed that the ion concentration in the collected freshwater remained consistently low, with Na + levels at 12.9 mg·L −1 and K + levels at 2.2 mg·L −1 , both significantly below the World Health Organization (WHO) standards. In addition to desalination, the system also generated an open-circuit voltage of up to 0.5 V, and achieved a maximum evaporation rate of 4.86 kg m −2 h −1 . Long-term stability tests indicated a performance retention exceeding 90 %. These results highlight the significant potential of the fabricated evaporator for sustainable seawater desalination and energy co-generation.

Ship discharges and offshore crude oil spills pose significant challenges to human health and environmental safety. Superhydrophobic coatings exhibit excellent water-repellent properties and can be widely applied in fields such as oily wastewater treatment and oil spill remediation. In this study, a superhydrophobic nonwoven fabric (SNWF) was fabricated using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), nanosilicon dioxide (Nano-SiO2), and nanozinc oxide (Nano-ZnO). The water contact angle (WCA) of the SNWF reaches 155°. Furthermore, the SNWF demonstrates an excellent separation performance for various oil–water mixtures, with a separation efficiency of 95%. Even after 200 cycles of mechanical manual kneading and rubbing as well as exposure to varying pH conditions and temperatures, the SNWF retains its superhydrophobicity and exhibits excellent abrasion resistance and weatherability. Additionally, the incorporation of Nano-ZnO into the coating significantly enhances the antimicrobial properties of the SNWF. The SNWF fabricated in this study features stability, low cost, and ease of large-scale production, thus showing considerable potential for practical applications.

Flexible strain sensors have garnered considerable attention in the domains of health monitoring, human–machine interaction, and electronic skin due to their exceptional stretchability, flexibility, skin conformability, and superior sensing capabilities. Despite recent advances, developing high-performance strain sensors that combine high sensitivity, a wide strain range, and robust stability remains a significant challenge. To overcome this, we have innovatively developed a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)/MXene/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) strain sensor using a tilt-filtration method and a pre-stretching technique. This sensor features a novel gradient micro-wrinkle structure, induced by variations in thickness, which enhances its strain sensing capabilities and imparts superhydrophobic properties. The synergistic interaction between the materials and the microstructure enables the sensor to achieve a high sensitivity (gauge factor (GF) peaking at 136,124.40), a wide strain range (up to 300%), and excellent stability (up to 10,500 cycles at 10% strain). Capable of detecting a wide array of human body movements, from large-scale motions to subtle stimuli, this strain sensor also boasts a rough surface texture and low surface energy, conferring superhydrophobicity and corrosion resistance . These features make it suitable for use in harsh environments. The gradient micro-wrinkle strain sensors hold promising potential for practical applications in health monitoring, electronic skin, and human–machine interaction.

Flexible dielectric composite materials capable of converting power frequency electric fields into measurable electrical signals are of great significance in the field of non-contact electric field sensing in power systems. In this paper, graphene/nitride heterojunction powders were prepared using three representative nitrides (AlN, BN, and Si3N4) and embedded in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to prepare flexible composite films with a fixed filler content of 5.0 wt%. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) confirmed the successful formation of the heterojunctions. The results showed that the nitride-related elements (Al, Si and N) were spatially correlated with the graphene-rich regions, thus providing abundant interfacial contact sites. Dielectric spectroscopy (50 Hz–50 kHz) showed that all samples exhibited typical dispersive behavior, with the real part of the dielectric constant decreasing monotonically with increasing frequency, and the loss tangent also decreasing smoothly. Under a 50 Hz parallel-plate electric field, the normalized induced voltage amplitude (PDMS = 1) increases to 1.070 (≈7.0%) for G/PDMS, and further to 1.0723–1.07447 (≈7.23–7.45%) for AlN–G/PDMS, BN–G/PDMS, and Si3N4-G/PDMS. DFT calculations confirm that the graphene/nitride interface has a stable structure with negative binding energies (−2.241, −1.773, and −3.062 eV for AlN–G, BN–G, and Si3N4–G, respectively). Significant charge redistribution and Mulliken charge transfer (0.0538, 0.2047, and 0.0244 eV, respectively) are present at the interface, accompanied by Fermi level density of states modulation and a small bandgap opening (~0.101 eV) in BN–G. These results collectively support the interfacial polarization-driven mechanism and provide a comparative basis for selecting nitride components in graphene-based heterojunction fillers in flexible dielectric electric field-sensing layers.

In this study, we adopted the novel strategies of the soot template method to construct SiO 2 ceramic micro-nano structure surface and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) modification to reduce the surface energy. We fabricated a superhydrophobic/superoleophilic NS-PDMS oil–water separation screen by depositing coarse nano-SiO 2 ceramic on the surface of 100-mesh stainless-steel screen used as a substrate under the soot template method, which reduced the surface energy with PDMS. The fabricated NS-PDMS screen exhibited excellent superhydrophobic and self-cleaning properties. In particular, the superhydrophobic properties were stably maintained under various harsh conditions. Overall, the screen manifested self-cleaning ability for various water-containing stains, for example, coffee, milk, beer, and soy sauce. The mechanically damaged screen surface still retained its high roughness, and re-modification with PDMS could recover the superhydrophobic surface and oil–water separation performance. This suggests the re-use potential of the damaged NS-PDMS screen, which is vital for cost reduction and resource recycling. We believe that our study makes a significant contribution to the literature, because the fabricated NS-PDMS screen is superhydrophobic, superoleophilic, resistant toward several water-based solutions, chemically and mechanically stable under certain conditions, and can be reused with modification and repair after damage. Therefore, this screen can be broadly used as an oil–water separator.

A novel approach based on polydimethylsiloxane/graphene oxide/deep eutectic solvent (PDMS/GO/DES) sponge headspace solid phase extraction followed by GC-MS was successfully developed to determine the volatile components in cumin. The PDMS/GO/DES exhibits outstanding properties with high adsorption capacity and good chemical stability, and has shown its potentiality as an ideal adsorbent for the extraction of volatile compounds. The influence factors of the extraction process were investigated. Excellent analytical performances were achieved, including wide linearity (0.60–107.72 ng) with high correlation coefficients (R2 ≥ 0.9951), low LODs (0.23–9.23 ng) and LOQs (0.54–18.47 ng), satisfactory precision (intra-day RSDs ≤ 2.85% and inter-day RSDs ≤ 3.92%). Under the optimal extraction conditions, the volatile components in 17 cumin samples from four origins in Xinjiang were analyzed and 31 compounds were identified. PCA was used to establish the relationship between the origins and the volatile compounds for further discriminant analysis. The results showed that the PDMS/GO/DES method was a rapid, simple and sensitive technique for the analysis of volatile components in spices.

Alpha-hemihydrate phosphogypsum (α-HPG) is a cementitious material obtained by dehydration of phosphogypsum (PG), a byproduct of phosphoric acid production. Poor water resistance of α-HPG has usually restricted its application in construction materials. In this study, hydroxy-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (H-PDMS) and Portland cement (PC) were used for the hydrophobic modification of α-HPG. The fluidity, setting times, compressive strength, flexural strength, ratio of compressive to flexural strength, water absorption rate, softening coefficient, pore structure, chemical information, and microstructure of the samples were measured to evaluate the modification effect of H-PDMS and PC. The results showed that H-PDMS and PC significantly improved waterproof properties of α-HPG and reduced its porosity, total pore area, and pore diameter. Specifically, PC provided the reactive group −OH that reacted with H-PDMS. Also, due to the coverage of hydrophobic −CH3 groups, PG was given an overall hydrophobicity with a contact angle of 134° (1.5% H-PDMS). H-HPG (H-PDMS- and PC-modified α-HPG) hydrophobic material can be used in building materials with waterproof requirements and achieve the comprehensive utilization of solid waste PG.

The popular magnetic material of flaky carbonyl iron (FCI) is unfortunately vulnerable to electrochemical corrosion when exposed to a salty and foggy environment. This work reports on a sol-gel method that successfully modifies FCI particles, using lithium silicate (Li 2 SiO 3 ), poly dimethyl siloxane (PDMS), and γ-(2,3-epoxypropoxy) propytrimethoxysilane (KH560), to synthesize Fe@SiO 2 @KH560@PDMS hybrid composite, related to its organic–inorganic hybrid coatings. The favorable hydrophobicity of organic–inorganic hybrid coatings with the static contact angle of 120° impeded the contact between corrosive medium and FCI core. The results of electrochemical experiments also confirmed its excellent corrosion resistance , since the corrosion potential E corr was positively shifted to 0.01 V, and the corrosion current I corr was three orders of magnitude lower than that of the unmodified FCI particles. Thermogravimetric (TG) analysis indicates that the presence of hybrid coatings also improved the thermal stability of the produced material towards oxidation . Furthermore, the results of molecular dynamics simulation reveal that the hybrid layer inhibits the diffusion of corrosive medium.
