Synthesized acrylate monomers to improve photothermal conversion efficiency and fire safety of PEG/black phosphorus (BP) phase change composites

Jingkai Liu,Yishun Wuliu,Xinbei Zhu,Liyue Zhang,Jinyue Dai,Xiaoqing Liu

The combination of photothermal components and phase change materials (PCMs) has received extensive attention. However, the incorporation of photothermal functionality into PCMs confronts the fatal problems of low utilization efficiency and performance compromise during processing. In this work, an acrylate monomer-passivation strategy was proposed to wrap photosensitive black phosphorus nanosheets (CG-BPs) to retain their intrinsic properties for high photothermal conversion efficiency. In addition, a flame-retardant acrylate (MCBDB) was further synthesized to crosslink with CG-BPs and build a framework for PEG1000 encapsulation. The resulting composite (cPCMs-1.2) was able to achieve a photothermal conversion efficiency of 85.3% even with a low content of CG-BPs (1.2 wt%) and unconcentrated irradiation. And benefiting from the synergistic flame-retardancy of CG-BPs and poly(MCBDB), the PCM composites displayed a reduced peak heat release rate of 38.7% compared with that of pristine PEG1000, indicating improved fire resistance. Considering its appropriate phase-change temperature, the application demonstration of the fabricated cPCMs-1.2 for human body hot compress was conducted, in which the promoting effect on blood circulation was observed. This work provides us with a new idea for the simple fabrication and new application of photothermal PCM with high photothermal conversion efficiency and application safety.

Mengman Weng,Jingtao Su,Jiahui Lin,Jintao Huang,Yonggang Min

Nowadays, green energy conversion and storage materials are the research attention. Reusable stability is an important indicator in the application. In this work, the framework material formed by polyaniline (PANI) and MXene shows strong intrinsic light absorption performance and outstanding cycling stability for the solar-light to thermal energy conversion. With composition of polyethylene glycol (PEG) and PANI/MXene, a series of composite phase change materials were prepared, exhibiting great reusable capacity for solar light response and thermal energy storage . In this system, PM24 (n (PANI) : n (MXene)  = 100:24) shows the best comprehensive performance. During melting and freezing process, its latent heat values are as high as 150.93 J/g and 146.6 J/g, respectively, and the corresponding enthalpy efficiency are 90.1% and 89.6%, respectively. After ultra-long 1000 heating-cooling cycles, only 2.91% and 2.87% enthalpy rate loss of melting and freezing, indicating its superior cycling stability. Furthermore, with excellent solar light absorption capacity , the solar-to-thermal conversion efficiency of PM24 exceed 95.29%, and it also keeps stable reusability . Hence, PM24 exhibits a huge potential in terms of heat storage and photothermal conversion for long-term use.

Structural control of PEG-intercalating Na-bentonite and its influence on the properties of castor oil-based polyurethane coating

Shiping Wang,Rui Huang,Kun Ren,Lushen Shen,Xiang Li,Ganchang Lei,Lijuan Shen,Yingying Zhan,Ying Zheng,Lilong Jiang

Although controlled-release fertilizer (CRF) is a safer and more efficient strategy to administer nutrients for plant growth, it is still a daunting task to reduce the cost and improve the degradability of the synthetic resin coatings. In this paper, an inorganic/organic composite coating for urea fertilizer was prepared from a biodegradable castor oil-based polyurethane (PU) filled with the layered Na-bentonite (Na-BT), which was ultrasonically treated by a series of green PEG surfactants . Synergistically influenced by various intercalation ability, cation-hosting ability and hydrophilicity of the PEGs, the porous structures of the modified Na-BT (MBT) fillers were simply tuned by varying the Mn molecular weights of the PEGs, resulting in the adjustable water swelling and mechanical properties of the MBT/PU composites. Moreover, it was confirmed that the water swelling property played a critical role in controlling the early stage of nutrient release, and the mechanical properties were important for the longevity of nutrient release from the CRFs. The best MBT/PU composite supported a CRF with a long-term release of 75 % in 38 days, which was much longer than the one based on pure PU (20 days).

A topical thermosensitive hydrogel system with cyclosporine A PEG-PCL micelles alleviates ulcerative colitis induced by TNBS in mice

Xiao Chuyao,Li Genyun,Li Xiaoyue,Wang Dan,Wu Ya,Sun Minghui,Huang Jiangeng,Si Luqin

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is an idiopathic, chronic, relapsing disease. In most cases, only the distal colon is affected, and the colonic stasis or fast colonic transit through the inflamed colon usually results in reduced exposure of the distal inflamed colon. Although the immunosuppressant cyclosporine A (CsA) has been used in patients with severe colitis who do not respond to corticosteroids, the clinical application of CsA remains limited due to the systemic toxicities and insufficient accumulation at the site of action for the intravenous and oral routes. In this study, we loaded CsA into the amphipathic poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(ε-caprolactone) (PEG-PCL) micelles and then embedded them in hydrogels consisting of chitosan, poloxamer 188, and poloxamer 407 to construct a thermosensitive and mucoadhesive hydrogel drug delivery system (PLCP). The PLCP presented a high drug-loading capacity and showed a stable and rapid gelation rate after rectal administration into the body. Compared to CsA-loaded micelles and Sandimmun (Neoral ® ), the developed thermosensitive gel exhibited prolonged retention on the inflamed colon, as seen from in vitro adhesion and in vivo distribution experiments. It also fast mitigated colitis symptoms in TNBS-treated mice by regulating the expression levels of proinflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, COX-2, and iNOS2), anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-10, Nrf2, NQO1, and HO-1), and other relevant biochemical factors. Our results suggested that CsA-loaded micelle thermal hydrogel system could be a promising strategy by enhancing the retention in the diseased colon and promoting the relief and recovery of UC. Gold Nanoparticles Coated with SH-PEG-NH2 and Loaded with Ziyuglycoside I for Promoting Autophagy in Hematopoietic Stem Cells

Yongai Xiong,Tingting Chen,Lei Chen,Rongshan Cai

Introduction Radiotherapy and chemotherapy are the fundamental causes of myelosuppression in cancer patients, which usually induce a serious hematopoietic system toxicity, causing the hemocytes and immunity decline of patients. Ziyuglycoside I (ZgI), an active ingredient isolated from traditional Chinese medicine Sanguisorba officinalis L, has been demonstrated to increase the leucocytes and protect hematopoietic stem cells, which is related to its promotion of autophagy in hematopoietic stem cells. Methods In the present study, we formulated the SH-PEG-NH2-coated gold nanoparticles loading ZgI (ZgI-AuNPs) with a enhanced autophagy promotion in hematopoietic stem cells. ZgI-AuNPs were prepared by HAuCl4-sodium citrate reduction method, and the synthesis of ZgI-AuNPs was validated by XRD, FT-IR, DSC, and TEM findings. Furthermore, the drug loading rate and the release of ZgI were evaluated, and the ZgI-AuNPs’ effects on autophagy and immunofluorescence staining for LC3B were tested. Finally, the effect of ZgI-AuNPs on the autophagy and hematopoietic ability of HSCs in vivo was also carried out. Results The prepared ZgI-AuNPs have an irregular cubic crystal structure by TEM observation, and the average particle size was 340 ± 16.5 nm determined by DLS. The XRD, FT-IR and DSC detection showed that the ZgI had been well loaded in AuNPs, and the AuNPs can load the ZgI at a content of 160.63 ± 1.35 μg·mg−1. Meanwhile, the AuNPs can reduce the drug release rate of ZgI. Importantly, the ZgI-AuNPs enhanced autophagy of HSCs both in vitro and in vivo. At the same time, the gold nanoparticles enhance the hematopoietic effect of ZgI on mice HSCs.Conclusion Our research suggests that SH-PEG-NH2-coated gold nanoparticles loading ZgI has potential application in myelosuppression therapy.

Design, Synthesis and Biological Evaluation of Novel PEG-Rakicidin B1 Hybrid as Clostridium difficile (CD) Targeted Anti-Bacterial Agent

Lijun Xie,Li Chen,Yongbo Wei,Nannan Chen,Tong Wu,Jingming Zhou,Hong Jiang,Feng Lin

Rakicidin B1 was isolated and purified from the culture broth of a marineStreptomycessp. as a potent anti-cancer agent, and lately the compound and its derivatives have firstly been found to possess anti-Clostridium difficile(CD) activity but with high cytotoxicity. Herein, following our previous discovery on anti-CD activity of Rakicidin B1, structure modification was performed at the OH position of Rakicidin B1 and a new Rakicidin B1-PEG hybrids FIMP2 was facilely designed and synthesized by conjugating the PEG2000 with the scaffolds of Rakicidin B1 via the linkage of carbamate. The cytotoxicity of the FIMP2 was first evaluated against three different cancer cell lines, including HCT-8 cells, PANC-1, and Caco-2, with IC50values at 0.519 μM, 0.815 μM, and 0.586 μM, respectively. Obviously, as compared with a positive control group treated with Rakicidin B1, the IC50value of FIMP2 increased by nearly 91-fold, 50-fold, and 67-fold, suggesting that the PEGylation strategy significantly reduced the cytotoxicity of FIMP2. Thus, this preliminary result may be beneficial to increase its safety index (SI) value due to the decreased cytotoxicity of FIMP2. In addition, this decreased cytotoxicity of FIMP2 was further confirmed based on a zebrafish screening model in vivo. Thereafter, the anti-CD activity of FIMP2 was evaluated in vivo, and its efficacy to treat CDI was found to be better than that of vancomycin. The mortality and recurrence rate of FIMP2 is not as low compared with that of vancomycin; these results demonstrated that compound FIMP2 is a new, promising anti-CD agent with significant efficacy against CD recurrence with low cytotoxicity towards bodies. Keywords:Rakicidin B1;PEGylation strategy;anti-Clostridium difficile;low cytotoxicity

Improving Interfacial Problems between the Cathode and Solid-State Electrolyte by Coating ETPTA-PEG onto the Surface of LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2

Hongzhi Wang,Yi Bo Shang,Weiguo Zhang,Fei Ding,Lin Sang

In recent years, the rapid development of the electric vehicle industry has led to the requirement of Li-ion batteries (LIBs) with a higher energy density and better safety. Therefore, solid-state lithium batteries with the above advantages have attracted a lot of attention. However, solving the interfacial problem between cathodes and the solid-state electrolyte has become a major challenge in the practical application of solid-state lithium-ion batteries. In this article, ETPTA (trimethylolpropane ethoxylate triacrylate)-PEG (poly(ethylene glycol)) is introduced onto the surface of LiNi 0 . 8 Co 0 . 1 Mn 0 . 1 O 2 cathode materials by ultraviolet irradiation. TEM and FTIR analyses reflect the existence of the composite coating layer. Electrochemical tests reveal that the coated material has better cycle stability (capacity retention remains 84% after 100 cycles), lower interfacial impedance and higher rate capabilities (34 mA h g -1 at 2 C). These results reflect the fact that the coating layer plays a significant role in improving the interfacial contact between the cathode and solid-state electrolyte and suppressing surface side reactions.

Synthesis and Properties of Dynamic Crosslinking Polyurethane/PEG Shape-Stable Phase Change Materials Based on the Diels–Alder Reaction

Changhong Lin,Huan Ge,Puyou Ying,Tianle Wang,Min Huang,Ping Zhang,Tao Yang,Jianbo Wu,Vladimir Levchenko

Phase change materials (PCMs) can absorb and release energy while keeping the temperature constant; hence, they play a crucial role in the thermal management field. Shape-stable phase change materials (SSPCMs) were synthesized by chemical crosslinking to address the liquid leakage problem of solid–liquid phase change materials (SLPCMs) during the phase change process. However, the abandoned SSPCMs cannot be reused and recycled, which seriously restricts their practical application. Herein, a polyurethane network containing Diels–Alder bonds was used as the enclosure compound to obtain the encapsulation of polyethylene glycol (PEG), and then, the chemical structure, crystallization behavior, and phase transition ability of SSPCMs were systematically investigated. The results showed that the SSPCMs-3 sample (300 wt % PEG) had the best comprehensive performance, an enthalpy value of 171.7 J/g, and no leakage at 80 °C for 1 h. Moreover, the structure, crystallization behavior, and phase transition ability of SSPCMs could also basically remain unchanged after multiple thermal cycling and reprocessing.

Dispersion of silica nanoparticles in water/ethanol/PEG mixtures for stimuli-responsive aggregation to prepare improved fused silica glass

Qinglong Zhang,Youwang Hu,Yaowei Feng,Haikuan Chen,Haoning Zheng,Xiaoyan Sun,Ji'an Duan

The preparation of bulk-fused silica glass using stimuli-responsive silica nanoparticle (SiNP) aggregation methods is a promising research topic. For instance, the use of a SiNP/polyethylene glycol (PEG)/polyvinyl butyral (PVB) system for thermoplastic nanocomposite preparation, followed by heat-treatment sintering, has emerged as a highly precise and scalable method for obtaining fused silica glass with a short processing time. In this study, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and rheological analysis were used to investigate the dispersion of SiNPs in water, ethanol, water/ethanol, and water/ethanol/PEG mixtures. Furthermore, we investigated the effect of the different solvents on regulating external stimuli in the preparation of a SiNP slurry. Our results indicate that water/ethanol mixtures have a greater ability to obtain dispersed and thin slurries than water or ethanol alone, while the inclusion of PEG can further enhance this effect. The feedstocks obtained by this method is favorable for obtaining defect-free fused silica glass. In addition, agglomerates formed by SiNPs in a liquid environment can be rearranged and partially disassembled under the action of mechanical (shear) forces. Finally, optical profilometry tests showed that the sintered fused silica glass exhibited good surface quality replication, with a roughness Sa of only 148 nm. The finding in this study provides an idea for the preparation of commercial slurry for sintering fused silica glass.

PEG-conjugated single-walled carbon nanotubes enhance the cellular uptake of Coenzyme Q10: in vitro evaluation and mechanism study

Yang Shuoye,Niu Yakun,Li Luheng,Liu Jiaxin,Ma Mengjin,Duan Xiaoyu,Zhang Lu,Wang Le,Qu Lingbo

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) has a wide range of physiological functions and therapeutic value. However, its biomedical application as a health product or drug is limited by its insolubility and low bioavailability. Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) have attracted great interest for drug or therapeutic agent delivery due to their unique properties. In this study, the pristine SWCNTs are purified with different oxidizing acid, and the resulting shortened CNTs (CNTs-COOH) are conjugated with poly-(ethylene glycol) (PEG) groups. Afterwards, CoQ10 is loaded by CNTs carriers. CNTs carriers are systematically characterized and evaluated in terms of drug loading, in vitro release, cytotoxicity, and cellular uptake. The results reveal that the sizes (length) of CNTs-COOH and CNTs-PEG are 253.2 and 328.7 nm, respectively, and they have high loading capacity for CoQ10 and low cytotoxicity toward Caco-2 cells. In comparison with CNTs-COOH, CNTs-PEG exhibited better sustained-release property for CoQ10. Also, CNTs-PEG carriers loaded with CoQ10 can be effectively delivered into cells and have enhanced cellular uptake efficiency over time. Further study results of the uptake mechanism illustrate that CNTs-PEG can be internalized into cells through the broader and more efficient entry routes, including direct penetration, clathrin-mediated endocytosis and macropinocytosis pathway. In summary, the PEG-conjugated CNTs may be used as novel nanocarriers, and the findings will contribute to the rational design of multifunctional delivery vehicles for CoQ10. Graphical abstract

The Effect of Hydroxylated Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes on the Properties of Peg-Cacl2 Form-Stable Phase Change Materials

Lingyu Zheng,Xuelai Zhang,Weisan Hua,Xinfeng Wu,Fa Mao

Calcium ions can react with polyethylene glycol (PEG) to form a form-stable phase change material, but the low thermal conductivity hinders its practical application. In this paper, hydroxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with different mass are introduced into PEG1500·CaCl2form-stable phase change material to prepare a new type of energy storage material. Carbon nanotubes increased the mean free path (MFP) of phonons and effectively reduced the interfacial thermal resistance between pure PEG and PEG1500·CaCl23D skeleton structure. Thermal conductivity was significant improved after increasing MWCNTs mass, while the latent heat decreases. At 1.5 wt%, composite material shows the highest phase change temperature of 42 °C, and its thermal conductivity is 291.30% higher than pure PEG1500·CaCl2. This article can provide some suggestions for the preparation and application of high thermal conductivity form-stable phase change materials.Keywords:MWCNTs;form-stable phase change materials;PEG;thermal conductivity

Hollow Mesoporous Bi@PEG-FA Nanoshell as a Novel Dual-Stimuli-Responsive Nanocarrier for Synergistic Chemo-Photothermal Cancer Therapy

Yao Huang,Zhenluan Xue,Songjun Zeng

The development of stimuli-responsive multifunctional nanocarriers for therapeutic drug delivery is extremely desirable for highly specific treatment of disease. Herein, thiol–polyethylene glycol–folate acid-modified hollow mesoporous bismuth nanoshells (HM-Bi@PEG–FA NSs) were developed as the new dual-stimuli-responsive single-“elemental” photothermal nanocarriers for synergistic chemo-photothermal therapy of tumor. The designed hollow-mesoporous-type nanocarriers present excellent photothermal conversion capacity (∼34.72%) and good biocompatibility. Meanwhile, acidic pH and near-infrared (NIR) laser dual-stimulated doxorubicin (DOX) release is successfully achieved. More importantly, the DOX-loaded HM-Bi@PEG–FA NSs hold an efficient in vitro/in vivo antitumor effect through the synergistic chemo-photothermal therapy. Therefore, our findings provide the possibility of designing a dual-stimuli-responsive hollow mesoporous Bi-based photothermal nanocarrier for synergistically enhanced antitumor therapy.
