PVA hydrogel serve as a high-efficiency carrier to enhance the photocatalytic degradation performance of BiOBr

Dai Zhang,Xinxin Zhang,Daopeng Zou,Fengyi Zhang,Xijiang Chang,Xiaoyang Yue,Hao Li

BiOBr is a bismuth-containing photocatalytic material that exhibits visible light activity, making it highly promising for applications in photocatalytic degradation of pollutants and ecological protection. However, its application is hinder by the powder form and small particle size. Loading a powder photocatalyst on a suitable carrier is a common way to solve this challenge. This study proposes that PVA hydrogel can be used as a highly efficient carrier to enhance the photocatalytic degradation performance of BiOBr. By adding a foaming agent, the pore structure of hydrogel was improved and the degradation performance to pollutants in wastewater was increased. The impact of various factors, including BiOBr photocatalyst loading, solution pH, recycling stability, and reactive species, on the photocatalytic degradation process were investigated. The performance of the PVA/BiOBr composite hydrogel to degrade methylene blue (MB) under simulated solar irradiation was studied. After a 120 min photocatalytic reaction, PVA/BiOBr-1.0 % composite hydrogel removed 99 % of 10 mg·L −1 MB, which was superior to pure BiOBr photocatalyst. This investigation is of significance as it provides insights into the integration of BiOBr catalysts key role of the PVA hydrogel carriers in enhancing the catalytic performance of BiOBr photocatalyst in wastewater treatment .

Redox regulation of electrofluorochromic behavior for an AIEgen-doped PVA hydrogel based on a ferrocene derivate

Shang Zhang,Qiuhong Li,Hao Liu,Xueshu Li,Xuemei Wang,Xueqin Du,Cuiling Lv,Zhaodong Wang,Aixiang Li,Lin Niu

Redox stimulation at the molecular level has been the focus of many fields, especially in electrofluorochromic (EFC) devices with individually addressable pixels and switching function. In this study, the fluorescent molecule ((1E)-1-((4-(1,2,2-triphenylvinyl)benzylidene)-hydrazineylidene)ethyl)ferrocene (FcMe-TPE) with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties was synthesized and mixed with PVA to prepare an EFC hydrogel material (PVA/FcMe-TPE) with high conductivity. The obtained hydrogel exhibited reversible fluorescent switching behavior, which could be achieved by adding a redox agent alternately based on the redox properties of the FcMe-TPE molecule. The fluorescence intensity of the hydrogel increased by 700 times after adding oxidant and could almost return to the initial value by adding reductant. Interestingly, the effect of the oxidant could be replaced by applying a voltage and the hydrogel exhibited good EFC behaviors. When the voltage increased from 0 V to 1 V, the fluorescence intensity of the hydrogel gradually increased and reached the maximum value at 1 V. The obtained fluorescent hydrogels could be customized to different appearance according to needs, and the EFC devices with individually addressable pixels and switching function were fabricated successfully. Finally, by introducing phytic acid (PA), the mechanical strength of the PVA/FcMe-TPE hydrogel was greatly improved without affecting its EFC performance. This study provides a new idea and solution for the intelligent display field, such as advanced anti-counterfeiting and information encryption.

Bi@PVP/PVA aerogels with 3D porous networks: High-performance trapping and immobilization of iodine vapor

Chunhui Wu,Qingwei Ping,Xueru Sheng,Na Li,Bing Wang,Jian Zhang

During the reprocessing of irradiated nuclear fuel, radioactive iodine vapor—a hazardous substance threatening environmental safety and human health—is released in substantial quantities, creating an urgent need for adsorbents with high-efficiency iodine trapping capabilities. This study synthesizes BiOBr aggregates via hydrothermal method and loads them onto a three-dimensional (3D) porous aerogel, which is composed of crosslinked polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) (denoted as Bi@PVP/PVA). Compared with Bi@PVP and Bi@PVA, Bi@PVP/PVA shows significantly enhanced iodine adsorption performance: Bi@PVP/PVA-3, featuring a well-developed 3D porous network with optimized pore structure, achieves an exceptional iodine trapping capacity of 2482.2 mg/g at 85 °C, outperforming the single-polymer-supported counterparts. Characterizations confirm that crosslinking between PVP and PVA constructs a macroporous framework, which not only provides abundant sites for uniform loading of BiOBr aggregates but also facilitates iodine diffusion. Kinetic model analysis reveals the dual adsorption mechanism: the PVP/PVA porous network enables rapid trapping of iodine vapor, while chemical reactions between BiOBr and iodine ensure its firm immobilization. This synergistic effect of the carrier’s porous structure and the loaded BiOBr endows Bi@PVP/PVA aerogels with superior iodine treatment efficiency, highlighting their practical value in iodine capture during nuclear fuel reprocessing.

A triple-network PVA/cellulose nanofiber composite hydrogel with excellent strength, transparency, conductivity, and antibacterial properties

Mingyang Li,Yanen Wang,Qinghua Wei,Juan Zhang,Yalong An,Xiaohu Chen,Zhisheng Liu,Dezao Jiao

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-based hydrogels are widely used in the fields of tissue engineering, biomedicine, and flexible sensors due to their low cost, excellent biocompatibility, and simple gelation methods. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles are essential for the preparation of such hydrogels. Although this process can enhance the mechanical properties of the hydrogels to a certain extent, it can also result in opacity and limited tensile performance, significantly restricting their application in wearable devices and electronic skin. This study introduced cellulose nanofibers into polyacrylamide (PAM)/PVA double interpenetrating network hydrogel system, achieving the preparation of a multifunctional composite hydrogel with a “triple-network interlock” structure. Under the synergistic effects of multiple networks, multiple hydrogen bonds, and nano-reinforcement, this composite hydrogel requires only a single freeze-thaw cycle to achieve a tensile strength exceeding 1 MPa, which is significantly higher than that of PVA hydrogels subjected to multiple freeze-thaw cycles. The PVA-based hydrogel prepared in this work balances tensile strength (1.41 MPa), elongation (1332%), transparency (89.8%), and toughness (6.73 MJ m − ³). Additionally, this composite hydrogel exhibits high sensitivity (GF = 8.74), rapid response (108 ms), fatigue resistance, and antibacterial properties, making it a reliable strain sensor over a wide strain range. When encapsulated on human joints, it can monitor body movements in real-time, such as movements of fingers, wrists, elbows, and knees, and can be integrated into peripheral circuits to achieve precise real-time control of robotic hands. This work presents a multifunctional composite hydrogel with great potential as a candidate material for tissue engineering, human-machine interaction, and high-performance wearable sensors.

Different lignin fraction extraction by pH fractionation for lignin microspheres preparation as UV-blocking PVA film

Jiawei Zhang,Kaili Zhang,Chen Tian,Gaoyue Zhang,Xiao Jiang,Kui Wang,Kang Sun,Jianchun Jiang

Kraft lignin (KL), a major by-product of the pulp and paper industry, has garnered significant research attention due to its abundant availability and distinctive chemical structure, making it a promising candidate for applications such as biofuels, carbon materials, and polymer composites. Despite these advantages, its utilization in fine chemical industries, including nanomaterials, is constrained by its inherent dark color and broad molecular weight distribution. Addressing these limitations has become a central focus in ongoing research efforts aimed at enhancing the functionality and commercial viability of KL. In this study, we fractionated KL from a paper-making enterprise using pH fractionation, and obtained four kinds of lignin with different molecular weights. Following that, lignin microspheres (LMPs) were formed by self-assembly from four sizes of KL. Analyzing the KL and LMP properties, the low molecular weight lignin, such as KL-2, exhibited good antioxidant properties (84.27 %, 5 mg/mL), high brightness (ISO% = 7.6), high L ⁎ value (L ⁎  = 86.2) and low polydispersity index (PDI = 1.19). The LMP showed a narrow size distribution (1.0–1.4 μm). When the LMP content is 5 %, the 5 % LMP/PVA film maintains high transparency and exhibits excellent UV protection, achieving a UV shielding rate of up to 94.6 %. Therefore, this study offered an effective way for the comprehensive utilization of pulping waste KL.

Water-based X/γ-ray shielding coating: design of core-shell structure and waterborne matrix, and its radiation attenuation properties

Yanhe Wu,Yushuai Cheng,Zhengke Wang

To address the toxicity, weight, and environmental limitations of lead-based radiation shields, this research develops a lightweight water-based radiation attenuation coating via facile integration of core-shell structured Gd@Si and Bi@Si fillers into a waterborne polyurethane/polyvinyl alcohol matrix. The tetraethyl orthosilicate-modified core-shell design enables uniform dispersion of high atomic number fillers (up to 70 wt%) while enhancing interfacial photon scattering. At 1.5 mm thickness, this coating achieves 99.1 % X-ray attenuation efficiency at 31 keV, which is comparable to 0.25 mm lead, and a γ-ray mass attenuation coefficient of 0.1408 cm 2 /g at 662 keV, exceeding lead by 44 %. Simultaneously, the composite maintains robust mechanical properties (683.9 % elongation at 50 wt% loading) and thermal stability (264.9 °C onset decomposition temperature). With a density 78 % lower than lead, inherent hydrophobicity (97.5° contact angle), and adhesion to diverse substrates, this sprayable coating offers a scalable, eco-friendly solution for radiation protection in medical, nuclear, and aerospace applications.

Synergistic effect of PVA and FMEE on improving post-CMP surface uniformity for polysilicon and its mechanism

Yongkang Guo,Yanchao Ge,Shenao Nie,Yuxuan Qiu,Xin Wang,Yangang He

Polysilicon (Poly-Si) is crucial for gate electrodes and interconnects in integrated circuits. Surface uniformity after Chemical Mechanical Polishing (CMP) critically impacts device performance, especially with stringent photolithography requirements at scaled dimensions. Optimizing slurry formulation enhances uniformity, but the synergy between polymer (e.g., Polyvinyl Alcohol, PVA) and nonionic surfactant (e.g., Fatty Methyl Ester Ethoxylates, FMEE) and its effect on Poly-Si CMP uniformity remain unclear. This study introduced PVA and FMEE into an alkaline slurry. Post-CMP uniformity (Site Front Quotient Range, SFQR; Within-wafer Nonuniformity, WIWNU) and roughness (Local Root Mean Square Roughness, Sq) were evaluated using wafer geometry testing and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). Adsorption behavior and polishing effects were investigated via X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Attenuated Total Reflection Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulation, and friction testing. Compared to control (Blank), PVA/FMEE slurry significantly improved uniformity: SFQR reduced by 0.05 μm, edge WIWNU decreased to 2.97 %, and Sq optimized to 0.55 nm. PVA and FMEE synergistically form a dense composite adsorption layer via hydrogen bonding, selectively modulating local removal rates through lubrication and interfacial protection. Synergizing with enhanced abrasive dispersion stability, this mechanism improves Poly-Si CMP surface uniformity. The findings provide insights for developing high-precision Poly-Si CMP slurries.

Fouling Resistant CA/PVA/TiO2 Imprinted Membranes for Selective Recognition and Separation Salicylic Acid from Waste Water

Yu Xiaopeng,Mi Xueyang,He Zhihui,Meng Minjia,Li Hongji,Yan Yongsheng

Highly selective cellulose acetate (CA)/poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/titanium dioxide (TiO2) imprinted membranes were synthesized by phase inversion and dip coating technique. The CA blend imprinted membrane was synthesized by phase inversion technique with CA as membrane matrix, polyethyleneimine (PEI) as the functional polymer, and the salicylic acid (SA) as the template molecule. The CA/PVA/TiO2 imprinted membranes were synthesized by dip coating of CA blend imprinted membrane in PVA and different concentration (0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4 wt %) of TiO2 nanoparticles aqueous solution. The SEM analysis showed that the surface morphology of membrane was strongly influenced by the concentration of TiO2 nanoparticles. Compared with CA/PVA-TiO2(0.05, 0.1, 0.2%)-MIM, the CA/PVA-TiO2(0.4%)-MIM possessed higher membrane flux, kinetic equilibrium adsorption amount, binding capacity and better selectivity for SA. It was found that the pseudo-second-order kinetic model was studied to describe the kinetic of CA/PVA-TiO2(0.2%)-MIM judging by multiple regression analysis. Adsorption isotherm analysis indicated that the maximum adsorption capacity for SA were 24.43 mg g−1. Moreover, the selectivity coefficients of CA/PVA-TiO2 (0.2%)-MIM for SA relative to p-hydroxybenzoic acid (p-HB) and methyl salicylate (MS) were 3.87 and 3.55, respectively.

Changgui Yu,Huaping Gong,Zhaoxu Zhang,Kai Ni,Chunliu Zhao

In this paper, a relative humidity (RH) sensor based on vernier effect of two parallel Fabry-Perot interferometers is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is chosen as the humidity sensitive material. The sensor consists of a reference cavity formed by single mode fiber – fiber capillary - single mode fiber (SMF-FC-SMF) structure and a sensing cavity formed by SMF-FC-coated structure. The sensor shows the high sensitivity of 1.78 nm/%RH in the range of 55%RH-85%RH. We measured the stability of the sensor at 45%RH and 75%RH, and the response time between 55%RH and 75%RH is 12 s. In addition, it also has the advantages of low temperature disturbance, simple principle, and easy manufacture.

In Situ Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles on the Polyelectrolyte-Coated Sericin/PVA Film for Enhanced Antibacterial Application

Rui Cai,Gang Tao,Huawei He,Pengchao Guo,Meirong Yang,Chaoxiang Ding,Hua Zuo,Lingyan Wang,Ping Zhao,Yejing Wang

To develop silk sericin (SS) as a potential antibacterial biomaterial, a novel composite of polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs) coated sericin/poly(vinyl alcohol) (SS/PVA) film modified with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) has been developed using a layer-by-layer assembly technique and ultraviolet-assisted AgNPs synthesis method. Ag ions were enriched by PEMs via the electrostatic attraction between Ag ions and PEMs, and then reduced to AgNPs in situ with the assistance of ultraviolet irradiation. PEMs facilitated the high-density growth of AgNPs and protected the synthesized AgNPs due to the formation of a 3D matrix, and thus endowed SS/PVA film with highly effective and durable antibacterial activity. Scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry, Fourier transfer infrared spectroscopy, water contact angle, mechanical property and thermogravimetric analysis were applied to characterize SS/PVA, PEMs-SS/PVA and AgNPs-PEMs-SS/PVA films, respectively. AgNPs-PEMs-SS/PVA film has exhibited good mechanical performance, hydrophilicity, water absorption capability as well as excellent and durable antibacterial activity againstEscherichia coli,Staphylococcus aureusandPseudomonas aeruginosaand good stability and degradability. This study has developed a simple method to design and prepare AgNPs-PEMs-SS/PVA film for potential antibacterial application. Keywords:sericin;poly(vinyl alcohol);polyelectrolyte multilayers;AgNPs;antibacterial activity

Facile Fabrication of PVA Nanofibers Decorated With Ratiometric Fluorescent Carbon Dots for Chlorpyrifos Recognition With Deep Learning

Weirui Fang,Xiaoyi Zhu,Xingyu Rong,Zhen Wang,Manjun Du,Shiyu Liu,KangJu Lee,Yaowen Liu

A portable and intelligent sensing platform was developed for the rapid detection of chlorpyrifos (CPS). A ratiometric fluorescent nanosensor, comprising biomass-derived iron-doped carbon dots (Fe-CDs) as the probe and silver nanoclusters as the internal reference, was immobilized onto a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofiber membrane via electrospinning. The resulting sensor achieved a limit of detection (LOD) of 13.88 µmol/L for CPS and demonstrated excellent recoveries (98.52%–105.79%) in spiked cabbage samples. A deep learning model, integrated into a smartphone application, accurately quantified CPS by analyzing images of the sensor's visual response, showing a high correlation with actual concentrations ( R 2 = 0.991). This integrated system provides a simple, low-cost, and reliable tool for real-time food safety monitoring, successfully translating visual color changes into precise quantitative data.

Multifunctional BBR/PVA@PLGA coaxial electrospun membranes with osteogenic, angiogenic and barrier activities for potential bone regeneration

Ling Guo,Zonghao Hu,Long Yang,Haotian Bai,Wenpai Zhang,Lihua Yin

Maxillofacial bone defects present a significant clinical challenge. Although guided bone regeneration (GBR) is widely employed, the therapeutic efficacy of conventional barrier membranes remains limited due to their lack of multifunctional bioactivity. To address this, a novel coaxial electrospun barrier membrane was fabricated, featuring a berberine hydrochloride (BBR)-loaded polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) core and a poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) shell (denoted as BBR/PVA@PLGA). The membrane exhibited a well-defined nanostructure, suitable hydrophilicity, controllable degradation, favorable mechanical properties, and sustained drug release. In vitro studies confirmed its excellent cytocompatibility with MC3T3-E1, human umbilical vein endothelial cells, and L929 cells and its ability to promote cell migration. Functionally, the membrane significantly enhanced osteogenic differentiation and mineralization in pre-osteoblasts, accompanied by the upregulation of osteogenic gene expression. It also promoted angiogenic activity in endothelial cells, supported by increased expression of pro-angiogenic genes and improved tube formation. Moreover, the membrane served as an effective physical barrier, preventing cellular infiltration. In summary, this multifunctional BBR/PVA@PLGA coaxial electrospun membrane concurrently supports osteogenesis, angiogenesis, and barrier functions in vitro, demonstrating promising potential as a candidate biomaterial for future application in maxillofacial bone defect regeneration.
