To improve the water quality, a new type of grafted poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) particles was designed and synthesized to adsorb trace Pb 2+ in water. Through the surface hydroxylation of PVDF particles, followed by the sequential coupling of gelatin, β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and acrylic acid (AA) provide grafted PVDF particles (PAGCA) with multi-functionalized groups. The newly prepared PAGCA particles were characterized by FT-IR, XPS, and SEM. The results show that the PAGCA particles have excellent adsorption performance for Pb(II) in water and can remove Pb(II) rapidly and thoroughly with a removal rate of 100%. The adsorption capacity of PAGCA particles increased with the increase of solid–liquid ratio or pH value. The good adsorption performance of PAGCA particles was also demonstrated by completely removing 2.37 μg/L of Pb(II) from a river water sample. XPS and SEM analysis further confirmed the formation and adsorption of Pb(II) on the surface of PAGCA particles. The synthesized PAGCA particles also show good adsorption ability to cadmium(II) with a removal rate of 93.6% in single ionic water and 87.9% in river water, respectively. It is concluded that the combination of hydroxyl group, carboxyl group, and amino group on the surface of the new grafted PVDF particles greatly improves the adsorption capacity of PVDF particles for Pb 2+ , and it has a good application prospect in the removal of trace Pb(II) in water.

The composite system composed of polymer, conductive and dielectric filler has excellent dielectric properties. Herein, by studying the effect of filler distribution on the composite system's performance, the graphene nanoplatelets/Polystyrene (GNP/PS)/Barium titanate/Polyvinylidene Fluoride (BT/PVDF) selective composite system is prepared. When the conductivity and dielectric loss change little, the dielectric constant and breakdown field strength of the selective composite system are improved obviously. In the selective composite system, as the dielectric constant is between 12 and 13, the characteristic breakdown field strength is as high as 25.8 kV/mm, which is over three times higher than it of the pure composite system. It is because the addition of BT and GNP particles enhances the establishment of polarization. Besides, the blending of PVDF and PS improves the breakdown field strength of the material. Comprehensive properties of the material are enhanced. Therefore, this study provides a basis for the subsequent study of dielectric materials.

Abstract By electrospinning and the following electrospraying, porous polyvinylidene fluoride nanofiber scaffolds with the embedded titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) nanoparticles were fabricated to improve the adsorption and photocatalytic performance. Adsorption experiments to MB showed the best adsorption capacity of the scaffolds with the value of 46.87 mg/g. The photocatalytic degradation performance of the composite nanofibers was directly proportional to the embedded amounts of the nanoparticles. Moreover, the introduction of the porous and the embedding of the photocatalytic nanoparticles contributed the synergetic effects by improving the adsorption capacity to 85.70 mg/g within relative short period of time, and so the photocatalytic efficiency of TiO 2 was enhanced and the energy requirement of photocatalysis was reduced to some extent. Through fourth cycles of the adsorption and the photocatalytic experiments, the nanofibers showed relative excellent recycling performances (> 89.5%). Thus, the composite nanofibers would be the potential effective and stable ones to remove pollutants from wastewater or other circumstances. Graphic abstract

Composite polymer electrolyte (CPE) with enhanced ionic conductivity, excellent flexibility and strong strength are urgently required for all-solid-state lithium metal batteries (LMBs). Inspired by the dragonfly wings that are super-lightweight and ultrathin but have excellent stability when subject to bending and twisting during flapping, we have constructed Li 0.35 La 0.55 TiO 3 (LLTO) nanowires-filled polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). In our design, the PVDF is used to construct the ultrathin membrane, the 1D LLTO nanowires are acted as the veins to give rise to a high mechanical strength of 10 Mpa. The special design creates cellular surface of PVDF/LLTO-CPE, which guarantees the excellent flexibility as well as a good interface contact between CPE and Li anode. When evaluated as electrolyte for LiFePO 4 |Li battery, the PVDF/LLTO-CPEs can suppress Li dendrites growth, and thus presents an excellent cycling stability of 140 mAh g −1 after 200 cycles. Moreover, the flexible LiFePO 4 |PVDF/LLTO-CPE|Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 pouch cell delivers a satisfactory rate performance and cycle stability under folding and bending states. The excellent performances are attributed to the unique cellular structure and super mechanical strength of biomimetic PVDF/LLTO-CPE. All results show the PVDF/LLTO-CPE is a promising solid-state electrolyte for flexible electronic devices.

Coatings with piezoelectric characteristics were prepared on the titanium alloy's surface to improve its biological properties, so that the titanium alloy possessed a piezoelectric effect similar to that of bones, thereby promoting bone growth and shortening bone repair time. Compared with other piezoelectric ceramic coatings , PVDF bio-piezoelectric coatings have better piezoelectric properties. However, the PVDF coating is hydrophobic, which is not conducive to calcium deposition. In this study, HA/PVDF coating was obtained on the titanium surface, which indicated a piezoelectric effect. The hydrophilicity of the coating has been improved with the increase of HA content. Corona poling gives the HA/PVDF coating piezoelectric characteristics, and also effectively reduces the contact angle. Moreover, the contact angle of the polarized HA/PVDF coating decreased by 66.9%. The synergistic effect of the introduction of HA and the high piezoelectric coefficient promotes the coating's mineralization. Surprisingly, the poled 20HA/PVDF coating surface was entirely covered by apatite after soaking in simulated body fluids (SBF) for 1 day with physiological loading. Additionally, the coating with rapid apatite deposition ability allows titanium alloy implants to obtain excellent biological activity, which has potential application value in the rapid repair of bone defects.

Dielectric capacitors are key devices in pulsed power systems for their high power density. To improve the energy density, compact nanocomposite films comprising PVDF polymer and core-shell BaTiO 3 @TiO 2 nanoparticles are prepared, in which the BaTiO 3 ( d ~ 8 nm) nanoparticles are encapsulated by the amorphous TiO 2 shell layer. Compared to the conventional BaTiO 3 /PVDF nanocomposite, the BaTiO 3 @TiO 2 /PVDF nanocomposite in this report takes advantage of the small particle size and the gradient dielectric design of the interface, which enhances the electric displacement as high as 65% and the breakdown strength of 20% simultaneously. A maximal discharged energy density of 11.34 J·cm −3 is achieved under an electric field of 420 kV·mm −1 in the nanocomposite film containing 5 vol% BaTiO 3 @10 wt%TiO 2 . Therefore, the gradient design of ultrasmall dielectric nanofillers shows high potential in fabrication of high energy-density nanocomposite.

Electret treatment was a simple method to enhance the charge-electrode properties of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) materials due to the increase of space charge and polarization charge of PVDF materials. The polarization charge was due to the electric dipole orientation change in loose nanofiltration PVDF membrane, which increased the electric dipole moment and improved the polarity of surface potential. Importantly, electret charges were less affected by ambient humidity. Therefore, the electret treatment could improve the surface negative potential of loose nanofiltration PVDF membrane, so as to improve its anti-fouling performance under certain conditions. Based on the above theoretical analysis, the influence and mechanism of the electret treatment on the surface potential, morphology, structure, hydrophilicity and anti-pollution performance of PVDF membrane were studied in this manuscript. When the electret time was 7.5 min and the electret voltage was 30 kV, the surface negative potential was the highest. The content of β phase crystals was 39.1%, which was 12.18% higher than that of untreated membrane. In addition, the surface morphology of PVDF membrane did not change significantly, but the water contact angle decreased slightly, and the pore size increased by 0.36–0.75 nm. Importantly, the flux and the rejection of dye and BSA increased to some extent, and the maximum rejection rate and water flux were increased by 10.34% and 20.25%, respectively. Through the cyclic filtration test and analysis, the anti-fouling performance of membrane was increased due to electrostatic repulsion.

We report the fabrication of polyvinylidene fluoride (tetrabutyl titanate)/polyvinyl pyrrolidone ((tetrabutyl titanate))-graphene quantum dots [PVDF(TBT)/PVP(TBT)-GQDs] film photocatalyst with enhanced photocatalytic performance. The polyvinylidene fluoride (tetrabutyl titanate)/polyvinyl pyrrolidone ((tetrabutyl titanate)) [PVDF(TBT)/PVP(TBT)] film was first prepared with a dual-electrospinning method and then followed by attaching graphene quantum dots (GQDs) to the surface of the composite film through a hydrothermal method. Later, part of the PVP in the composite film was dissolved by a hydrothermal method. As a result, a PVDF(TBT)/PVP(TBT)-GQDs film photocatalyst with a larger specific surface area was achieved. The photocatalytic degradation behavior of the PVDF(TBT)/PVP(TBT)-GQDs film photocatalyst was examined by using Rhodamine B as the target contaminant. The PVDF(TBT)/PVP(TBT)-GQDs photocatalyst showed a higher photocatalytic efficiency than PVDF(TBT)-H2O, PVDF(TBT)/PVP(TBT)-H2O, and PVDF(TBT)-GQDs, respectively. The enhanced photocatalytic efficiency can be attributed to the broader optical response range of the PVDF(TBT)/PVP(TBT)-GQDs photocatalyst, which makes it useful as an effective photocatalyst under white light irradiation. Keywords:electrospinning;nanofiber film;tetrabutyl titanate composites;graphene quantum dots;visible light photocatalysis

This study uses PVDF, PAN, and coaxial electrospinning technique to build a core-sheath structure for TiO 2 @PVDF/PAN electrospun membranes. The resulting electrospun membranes are compared with traditional electrospun membranes in terms of photocatalysis and oil-water separation, which examines the influences of electrospinning fibrous structure. The test results show that the core-sheath structure provides TiO 2 @PVDF/PAN electrospun membranes with a large diameter, high strength, a rough surface, a high photocatalysis, and good oil-water separation. With PVDF as the sheath and PAN as the core, TiO 2 @PVDF/PAN electrospun membranes have a maximum strength of 8.96 MPa and exhibit 97% of rhodamine B pollutant after the exposure to the UV light. Moreover, the oil-water separation rate is 99% and an oil flux is 40 163.79 L·m 2 ·h −1 , and the membrane maintains a high flux after 10 cycles, which makes TiO 2 @PVDF/PAN electrospun membranes an important candidate for treating wastewater produced in industry and daily life.

This research work reports on development and characterization of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) thin films by intercalation of graphene during direct ink writing process with auxiliary electric potential (voltage). The effects of graphene additive on the crystallinity and β-phase transformation in PVDF thin films are studied. The results show that small amount of graphene additive in the writing ink promotes the crystalline nucleation, and the micro electric fields among graphene sheets also promote the formation of the folded β-PVDF chains and prevent the spherulite growth. When 0.05 wt% amount of graphene was added in the writing ink, the crystallinity of the thin film was about twice higher than that of the pure PVDF thin film, and the β-phase content in the thin film reached 67.30%. The sensitivity of the PVDF/graphene composite film is also much higher than that of the pure PVDF piezoelectric film.

PVDF/ZnO/CuS photocatalysts with ZnO/CuS heterojunctions were synthesized via electrospinning, hydrothermal, and ion-exchange techniques. As matrix materials, electrospun PVDF nanofibers are easy to be recycled and reused. ZnO nanorods anchored on PVDF nanofiber with high specific surface area provide abundant active reaction sites for photocatalysis. While the loaded CuS nanoparticles as a photosensitizer compensate the low quantum efficiency of ZnO and improve the visible-light photocatalytic efficiency. As a result, the PVDF/ZnO/CuS composited photocatalyst exhibits outstanding photocatalytic performance in exposure to UV and visible light owing to the suppressed recombination of electron–hole pairs and widened visible light absorption range. The kinetic constants of PVDF/ZnO/CuS nanocomposites under UV irradiation (9.01 × 10−3 min−1) and visible light (6.53 × 10−3 min−1) irradiation were 3.66 and 2.53 times higher than that of PVDF/ZnO (2.46 × 10−3 min−1 & 2.58 × 10−3 min−1), respectively. Furthermore, PVDF/ZnO/CuS nanocomposites demonstrate excellent robustness in terms of recycling and reuse, which is advantageous in practical applications.

Membrane will inevitably reach its end of life during long-term application. The current disposal approach of replacing end-of-life (EOL) membranes by new membranes constrains the economic efficiency and sustainability of the membrane-based wastewater treatment . Herein, we conducted a proof-of-concept study of regenerating EOL polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes from a full-scale membrane bioreactor (MBR), to achieve an economical and sustainable membrane-based wastewater treatment. A novel chemical cleaning−solvent treatment−hydrophilic modification strategy was proposed for regenerating the EOL PVDF membranes. After the regeneration, the water permeance of the EOL membrane could be recovered from 43.7 ± 8.8 to 426.0 ± 40.3 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 , which was comparable with that of the new membrane. The solvent treatment slightly dissolved the membrane matrix and facilitated the detachment of recalcitrant foulants, which was responsible for the markedly recovered water permeance. The hydrophilic modification using polydopamine coating effectively improved surface hydrophilicity of membrane, endowing the regenerated membrane with better antifouling performance over the solvent treated membrane. The regenerated membrane was tested in an MBR for real municipal wastewater treatment, where the regenerated membrane possessed a comparable effluent quality, as well as a lower fouling rate over EOL, chemical cleaned, and solvent treated membranes. Compared with the conventional way of membrane replacement, the reduction in expenditure and carbon emission of membrane regeneration was ∼3.0 USD/m 2 -membrane/year and 0.059 kg CO 2 -e/membrane module, respectively. This proof-of-concept study offers a promising strategy of the EOL membrane regeneration to achieve economical and sustainable membrane-based wastewater treatment.
