Due to their poor light penetration, photothermal therapy and photodynamic therapy are ineffective in treating deep tissue infections, such as osteomyelitis caused by Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ). Here, a microwave (MW)-responsive magnetic targeting composite system consisting of ferric oxide (Fe 3 O 4 )/Prussian blue (PB) nanoparticles, gentamicin (Gent), and biodegradable poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) is reported. The PLGA/Fe 3 O 4 /PB/Gent complex is used in combination with MW thermal therapy (MTT), MW dynamic therapy (MDT), and chemotherapy (CT) to treat acute osteomyelitis infected with S. aureus -infected. The powerful antibacterial effect of the PLGA/Fe 3 O 4 /PB/Gent is determined by the synergistic effects of heat and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation by the Fe 3 O 4 /PB nanoparticles under MW irradiation and the effective release of Gent at the infection site via magnetic targeting. The antibacterial mechanism of the PLGA/Fe 3 O 4 /PB/Gent under MW irradiation is analyzed using bacterial transcriptome RNA sequencing. The MW heat and ROS reduce the activity of the protein transporters on the bacterial membrane, along with the transport of various ions and the acceleration of phosphate metabolism, which can lead to increased permeability of the bacterial membrane, damage the ribosome and DNA, and accompany the internal protein efflux of the bacteria, thus effectively killing the bacteria.

Heavy metal contamination, particularly from Pb(II), poses severe environmental and health risks due to its toxicity and persistence in ecosystems. This study presents an innovative and sustainable adsorbent composed of nitrogen doped carbon quantum dots (NCDs), derived from sodium alginate and immobilized on a sodium alginate hydrogel (HL-NCDs), for the efficient extraction of Pb(II) from water. The experimental results indicate that Pb N and Pb C interactions, particularly involving the N H moieties within the carbon quantum dots, are the predominant mechanisms facilitating Pb(II) removal, as confirmed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. These interactions are substantiated by thermodynamic analyses and charge distribution studies, which highlight the enhanced affinity of HL-NCDs towards Pb(II) ions. The novel HL-NCDs composite material not only demonstrates excellent Pb(II) adsorption efficiency but also suggests broad applicability in water treatment technologies, marking a significant advancement in the use of biomass-derived materials for environmental remediation.

The sanitary landfill method remains the primary disposal of municipal waste in developing countries. Effective landfill barriers in intercepting pollutants are warranted to avoid soil and groundwater contamination by leachate leakage from those landfills that threaten human health. This work focuses on enhancing the capability of reticulated red clay barriers to intercept Pb(II) by incorporating activated charcoal and bentonite. The impacts of additives on the hydraulic behavior and Pb(II) blocking efficacy of composite reticulated red clay were explored through hydraulic conductivity and leachate concentration tests, respectively. The microstructural evolution of barrier materials was revealed through scanning electron microscope (SEM) and mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) tests. Results suggest that the formulated activated charcoal-bentonite-reticulated red clay composite barrier exhibited significantly better performance than those with the additives individually. The permeability coefficient and Pb(II) leachate concentration of the activated charcoal-bentonite-reticulated red clay barrier with 5% activated charcoal, 16% bentonite, and 79% reticulated red clay were found to be 13.20% and 23.97% of pure reticulated red clay, respectively. The pore size distribution (PSD) curve indicates that the activated charcoal -bentonite-reticulated red clay barrier contains only nanoscale pores. In addition, the activated charcoal and bentonite in the composite barrier form a tortuous network structure that binds the clay aggregates together. This results in more intricate flow paths, enhancing adsorption and ion exchange effects, ultimately reducing hydraulic conductivity and improving the barrier’s ability to intercept contaminants.

In this work, based on the lanthanide rare earth Sm3+ doped 0.2Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-(0.8-x)PbZrO3-xPbTiO3:0.015Sm ceramics with a rhombohedral-tetragonal morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) around x = 0.40, we gradually introduced alkaline earth Ba2+ and Sr2+ at the A-site to substitute Pb2+, namely, 0.2A(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-0.4AZrO3-0.4ATiO3:0.015Sm (A = Pb0.99-yBa0.01Sry) and conducted a systematic study on their phase structure, domain configuration, and electrical properties. The results indicate that without alkaline earth substituting, the MPB composition shows peak electrical property with piezoelectric coefficient d33 = 477 pC/N and electromechanical coupling factor kp = 0.59, while an appropriate amount of alkaline earth substituting changes the MPB from rhombohedral–tetragonal coexisting phases to rhombohedral–monoclinic–tetragonal coexisting phases, leading to a significant enhancement in electrical properties with d33 = 687 pC/N and kp = 0.63 around y = 0.03 for comparison. This work classifies the mechanism for alkaline earth substituting enhanced piezoelectric performance and may provide a guide for the development of high-performance lead-based relaxor ferroelectrics.

The sustainable production of carbamates from biomass-derived molecules provides a viable alternative to petrochemical-based production routes. In this work, we reported an efficient catalytic strategy for synthesizing bio-based furfurylmethyl carbamate (FMC) through methoxycarbonylation of furfurylamine with dimethyl carbonate (DMC) under mild conditions. A novel Pb-Ni composite oxide catalyst with high activity and stability was developed, which significantly outperformed conventional monometallic oxide catalysts. Comprehensive characterization revealed that the synergistic interaction between Pb and Ni species constructed composite oxide nanoparticles (about 11.4 nm), with Pb species highly dispersed on the NiO matrix. Consequently, highly defective structure, abundant acid-base dual sites, and a high specific surface area were concurrently formed, which were identified as critical factors for activating both nucleophilic and electrophilic reactants. Significantly, appreciable quantities of furfuryl isocyanate were detected, demonstrating the feasibility of a one-pot cascade synthesis of bio-based isocyanates from amines and DMC.

Post-modification of metal-organic framework (MOF) materials is an effective means to enhance their efficient and selective adsorption for heavy metal ions . In this article, we presented a reflection-type optical fiber surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor based on dual core fiber (DCF) coated with UiO-66-RSA (UiO-66-NH 2 post-modified with resorcinol aldehyde) film for the specific detection of Pb(II) in aqueous media . The composite material UiO-66-RSA exhibits stronger affinity and specificity for Pb(II) than UiO-66-NH 2 . The adsorption of Pb(II) can change the equivalent refractive index (RI) of UiO-66-RSA film, causing a regular shift in SPR spectra. Experiments have shown that the limit of detection (LOD) of the SPR Pb(II) sensor can reach 0.1 nM. Meanwhile, research has found that the SPR sensor is accompanied by temperature crosstalk of 0.356 nm/°C. Therefore, we constructed a Michelson temperature interferometer using polymer micro tips on the end face of the fiber core to achieve temperature compensation. Based on the above two sensing channels, dual parameter demodulation of Pb(II) concentration and temperature can be achieved with an error rate of less than 0.5 %. This article has potential research value in exploring the application of post modification techniques of MOF in fiber optic lead ion detection.

Regulating the crystallization dynamics of perovskite films is key to improving the efficiency and operational stability of (FA0.83MA0.17Cs0.05)Pb(I0.85Br0.15)3perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, precise regulation of the crystallization process remains challenging. Here, we introduce a reactive anti-solvent strategy based on the Kornblum reaction to modulate crystallization via in-situ chemical transformation. Specifically, trans-cinnamoyl chloride (TCC) is employed as a single-component anti-solvent additive that reacts with dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) in the perovskite precursor solution. The resulting acylation reaction generates carbonyl-containing products and sulfur ions. The carbonyl oxygen coordinates with Pb2+ions to form Pb–O bonds, which retard rapid crystallization, suppress heterogeneous nucleation, and facilitate the growth of larger perovskite grains with improved film uniformity. Additionally, the exothermic nature of the reaction accelerates local supersaturation and nucleation. This synergistic crystallization control significantly enhances the film morphology and device performance, yielding a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 23.02% and a markedly improved fill factor (FF). This work provides a new pathway for anti-solvent engineering through in-situ chemical regulation, enabling efficient and scalable fabrication of high-performance PSCs.

Studying efficient and accurate soil heavy-metal detection technology is of great significance to establishing a modern system for monitoring soil pollution, early warning and risk assessment, which contributes to the continuous improvement of soil quality and the assurance of food safety. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is considered to be an emerging and effective tool for heavy-metal detection, compared with traditional detection technologies. Limited by the soil matrix effect, the LIBS signal of target elements for soil heavy-metal detection is prone to interference, thereby compromising the accuracy of quantitative detection. Thus, a series of signal-enhancement methods are investigated. This study aims to explore the effect of conductive materials of NaCl and graphite on the quantitative detection of lead (Pb) in soil using LIBS, seeking to find a reliable signal-enhancement method of LIBS for the determination of soil heavy-metal elements. The impact of the addition amount of NaCl and graphite on spectral intensity and parameters, including the signal-to-background ratio (SBR), signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and relative standard deviation (RSD), were investigated, and the mechanism of signal enhancement by NaCl and graphite based on the analysis of the three-dimensional profile data of ablation craters and plasma parameters (plasmatemperature and electron density) were explored. Univariate and multivariate quantitative analysis models including partial least-squares regression (PLSR), least-squares support vector machine (LS-SVM), and extreme learning machine (ELM) were developed for the quantitative detection of Pb in soil with the optimal amount of NaCl and graphite, and the performance of the models was further compared. The PLSR model with the optimal amount of graphite obtained the best prediction performance, with an Rp that reached 0.994. In addition, among the three spectral lines of Pb, the univariate model of Pb I 405.78 nm showed the best prediction performance, with an Rp of 0.984 and the lowest LOD of 26.142 mg/kg. The overall results indicated that the LIBS signal-enhancement method based on conductive materials combined with appropriate chemometric methods could be a potential tool for the accurate quantitative detection of Pb in soil and could provide a reference for environmental monitoring.

Adsorbents with high adsorption capacity, selectivity, and antioxidant activity are crucial to enhance the efficacy and prognosis of hemoperfusion treatments for patients with lead poisoning. This study presents the development of polyphenol-analogous dextran hydrogels (PYG@Dex) with abundant chemically conjugated pyrogallol (PYG) groups on their networks, which were prepared by Hantzsch cross-linking reaction involving the formation of 1,4-dihydropyridine from acetoacetylated dextran, 3,4,5-trihydroxybenzaldehyde, and NH 4 OAc. The resulting PYG@Dex hydrogel exhibited superior biocompatibility and robust antioxidant capabilities, achieving a free radical scavenging rate of over 90 %. Notably, the hydrogel with high PYG content displayed an outstanding adsorption capacity of 102.35 mg·g −1 for Pb 2+ ions, due to the coordination interactions with PYG and β -ketoester groups. The adsorption affinity of PYG@Dex for Pb 2+ ions was confirmed in the presence of biologically-relevant metal ions (K + , Na + , Ca 2+ , and Mg 2+ ) in both aqueous solutions and simulated plasma. These findings underscore the potential of PYG-conjugated hydrogels to address the challenges of selective heavy metal removal from blood through hemoperfusion and to provide additional protection against heavy metal-induced oxidative stress responses.

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS), an ordinary hole transport layer (HTL), has inherent shortcomings that restrict its use in Sn–Pb perovskite solar cells (PSCs). In this study, PEDOT:PSS was mixed with ethanol using a simple solution method, resulting in enhanced conductivity and an optimized work function. By varying the concentration of ethanol doping, the insulated PSS shell surrounding the PEDOT:PSS was stripped, and the conductivity of PEDOT:PSS was increased from 4.50 × 10−4 S cm−1 to 7.00 × 10−4 S cm−1. The work function was lowered by 0.23 eV to −5.30 eV, bringing it closer to the energy level of Sn–Pb perovskite. Ethanol-doped PEDOT:PSS was utilized as the HTL in Sn–Pb PSCs based on FA0.5MA0.5Sn0.5Pb0.5I3, resulting in 18.10% photoelectric conversion efficiency with negligible hysteresis, and more than 40% performance improvement compared to the undoped devices. Furthermore, the treatment of ethanol could enhance the stability of the devices. The doped device was placed in a glove box for one month, and its efficiency remained above 90% of the maximum value. Thus, ethanol doping in PEDOT:PSS should provide a promising strategy for developing HTLs in efficient Sn–Pb PSCs.

SnSe demonstrates unparalleled potential in thermoelectric applications, combining non-toxicity, low cost, and abundant sources. Furthermore, polycrystals have good machinability and are easier to prepare. Here, we report a high peak ZT of 2.0 at 873 K in Pb and Er co-doped polycrystalline SnSe prepared through the hydrothermal method. An ultralow lattice thermal conductivity of 0.13 W m−1 K−1 at 873 K is obtained by introducing endogenous hetero-/homo-structural nanoprecipitates and Sn vacancies into the matrix to construct a multiscale scattering structure for phonons. Meanwhile, with the band alignment and flattening induced by Pb and Er co-doping, the effective mass is increased thus leading to a large Seebeck coefficient. Pb and Er co-doping not only optimizes the energy band structure of SnSe, but also optimizes the carrier concentration, thus simultaneously leading to enhanced electrical conductivity as well as enhanced electrical transport properties. Therefore, a high peak ZT of 2.0 is achieved in Pb and Er co-doped polycrystalline SnSe due to the markedly ultralow thermal conductivity and enhanced power factor. This work proposes a novel approach to synergistically regulate the electrical and thermal transport properties of polycrystalline SnSe-based thermoelectric materials through constructing endogenous hetero-/homo-nanostructures combined with band alignment.

This work aimed to develop a feasible technology to reuse dead pig biowaste for heavy metals removal , which was first carbonized into pig bone char (PBC) after pyrolysis and further functionalized with amino ( NH 2 ) to improve its affinity with heavy metals. The application of PBC after NH 2 -functionalization for aqueous heavy metals removal was explored, including Pb 2+ , Cu 2+ , and different complex Cu(II) species. PBC@SiO 2 -NH 2 showed comparable performance with AC@SiO 2 -NH 2 . The adsorption capacity of Pb 2+ and Cu 2+ by PBC@SiO 2 -NH 2 was 120 and 30 mg g −1 , respectively. The NH 2 functionalization enhanced the adsorption of complex Cu(II) species, and PBC@SiO 2 -NH 2 exhibited good performance under a wide pH range and coexisting ions. The adsorption of Cu(II) EDTA species with an EDTA/Cu(II) molar ratio of 1.0 by PBC would be enhanced ~3 times and ~6 times after NH 2 functionalization and further addition of Fe 3+ , respectively. The results of EDX , elemental mapping, and XPS confirmed the adsorption of Cu(II) species. The adsorption kinetics , isotherm, and thermodynamics of different Cu(II) species by PBC@SiO 2 -NH 2 were investigated. The regeneration of PBC@SiO 2 -NH 2 was easily performed via acidic wash. These results suggested the application potential of the reuse of biowaste, which could be a promising adsorbent for aqueous heavy metals after specific functionalization.
