Wound repair is a dynamic and complex process that involves various interactions between repair cells, growth factors and the extracellular matrix. Nitric oxide (NO) plays a pivotal role in wound healing, including causing the contraction of wound surfaces, dilating blood vessels, participating in inflammation, and promoting collagen synthesis, angiogenesis, and fibroblast proliferation. Here, we prepared a novel keratin-based nitric oxide donor, called S-nitrosated keratin (KSNO). Then, KSNO was coelectrospun with polyurethane (PU) and gelatin (Gel) to produce PU/Gel/KSNO biocomposite mats. The prepared mats released NO without cytotoxicity, promoted the proliferation of L929 murine fibroblasts and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), and inhibited bacterial growth. These mats could also accelerate the cell adhesion and growth along the random arrangement of electrospun fibers, and simulate the structure of the natural extracellular matrix to provide good scaffolds for cell. The effect of PU/Gel/KSNO on promoting wound healing was investigated on a full-thickness excisional cutaneous wound model in rats. The results demonstrated that these mats accelerated wound healing without inflammatory reaction. In conclusion, PU/Gel/KSNO mats display excellent bioactivity and biocompatibility and have potential in the field of wound repair.

A cathode host with strong sulfur/polysulfide confinement and fast redox kinetics is a challenging demand for high-loading lithium–sulfur batteries. Recently, porous carbon hosts derived from metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted wide attention due to their unique spatial structure and customizable reaction sites. However, the loading and rate performance of Li–S cells are still restricted by the disordered pore distribution and surface catalysis in these hosts. Here, we propose a concept of built-in catalysis to accelerate lithium polysulfide (LiPSs) conversion in confined nanoreactors, i.e., laterally stacked ordered crevice pores encompassed by MoS2-decorated carbon thin layers. The functions of S-fixability and LiPS catalysis in these mesoporous cavity reactors benefit from the 2D interface contact between ultrathin catalytic MoS2 and conductive C pyrolyzed from Al-MOF. The integrated function of adsorption–catalysis–conversion endows the sulfur-infused C@MoS2 electrode with a high initial capacity of 1240 mAh g–1 at 0.2 C, long life cycle stability of at least 1000 cycles at 2 C, and high rate endurance up to 20 C. This electrode also exhibits commercial potential in view of considerable capacity release and reversibility under high sulfur loading (6 mg cm–2 and ∼80 wt %) and lean electrolyte (E/S ratio of 5 μL mg–1). This study provides a promising design solution of a catalysis–conduction 2D interface in a 3D skeleton for high-loading Li–S batteries.

Nowadays, obtaining photocatalysts with a narrow band gap that can degrade contamination under visible light has been a hot topic in the field of environmental protection. In this report, the S-doped hierarchically structured ZnSnO3 with a high S doping ratio, a narrow band gap, and a large specific surface area is synthesized via a two-step hydrothermal method. ZIF-8 was used as the Zn source to synthesize ZnSnO3 with a hollow structure for the first time. Characterization techniques to confirm doping by S in the ZnSnO3 structure include the use of X-ray photoelectron and energy-dispersive spectroscopies. Owing to the hollow-structured ZnSnO3 precursor, S-doped ZnSnO3 demonstrated a large specific surface area (up to 80.63 m2/g) that is favorable for the strong adsorption of reactants. In addition, the S-doping ratio is as high as 90%, which is much higher than that of other related work. Because of the elevated S 3p energy level, the band gap of S-doped ZnSnO3 is rapidly decreased from 3.7 to 2.4 eV, which gives S-doped ZnSnO3 a higher efficiency in the utilization of visible light. Because of the enhanced adsorption capabilities and decreased band gap, the as-synthesized nanocomposite can be used as a high-efficiency photocatalyst for wastewater treatment. About 36% rhodamine B (RhB) is absorbed by S-doped ZnSnO3 even before 350 W Xe-lamp irradiation. After being irradiated under visible light for about 80 min, the RhB is almost completely degraded (degradation efficiency ≈90%) using S-doped ZnSnO3, which is much faster than using pure ZnSnO3 or other zinc–tin oxide-based photocatalysts. In this report, detailed discussions are also given for the synthesis process of hollow-structured ZnSnO3 and the mechanism of narrowing the band gap via S doping.

Postoperative peritoneal adhesions are one of the most common surgical complications. In this study, we developed a 20(S)-ginsenoside Rg3-loaded methoxy poly (ethylene glycol)-block-poly(L-lactide-co-glycolide) (mPEG- b -PLGA) electrospun membrane (PEM/Rg3) that could not only serve as a physical barrier, but also as a drug delivery system that releases 20(S)-ginsenoside Rg3 constantly to prevent postoperative peritoneal adhesions. The characteristics of PEM/Rg3, including scanning electron microscopy, water contact angle, and mechanical analyses, were assessed. Degradation and drug release assays of PEM/Rg3 were performed. The anti-adhesion efficacy of PEM/Rg3 was evaluated in an abdomen-cecum mouse model. The adhesion scores, adhesion areas, hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining, immunofluorescence, and western blotting were assessed. The 20(S)-ginsenoside Rg3 loaded mPEG- b -PLGA electrospun fibers were successfully fabricated. The fibers were smooth, with no obvious drug crystals. PEM/Rg3 membranes were biodegradable and could be degraded gradually to release 20(S)-Ginsenoside Rg3 constantly from the membranes. The animal study showed that PEM/Rg3 exhibited an excellent adhesion prevention ability when compared with the control group, the PEM group, and polylactic acid (PLA) commercial membrane (Surgiwrap™) group. Immunofluorescence and western blotting studies showed that PEM/Rg3 inhibited the expressions of interleukin 1 (IL-1), interleukin 6 (IL-6), and reactive oxygen species modulator-1 (ROMO1). The 20(S)-ginsenoside Rg3-loaded mPEG- b -PLGA electrospun membranes exhibited satisfactory anti-adhesion efficacy by inhibiting inflammatory responses and oxidative stress. This composite represents a promising strategy to prevent postoperative peritoneal adhesions.

Hydrogen bonding is widely present and plays a significant role in material science and supramolecular chemistry. This work reports a straightforward strategy for the preparation of polymeric nanoparticles from neutral poly(2-oxazoline)s (POx) and tannic acid (TA) driven by their intermolecular hydrogen bonding. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) measurements showed that POx bearing different substituents, that is, methyl, ethyl and n -propyl in the 2-position all could assemble with TA into stable nanoparticles in water or ethanol. The diameter of the assembled nanoparticles could be manipulated by varying parameters such as molecular weight of POx, concentration and ratio of POx, and TA. Interestingly, POx/TA nanoparticles exhibited upper critical solution temperature (UCST)-type thermoresponsive properties in ethanol or water depending on the molecular weight and substituent in the 2-position of POx. Increasing or decreasing the temperature at the transition point resulted in the reversible transformation between assembled nanoparticles and disassembled poly(2- n -propyl-2-oxazoline) (PnPrOx) and TA. In view of the tailored size of the stable nanoparticles and the biocompatibilities of POx and TA, the prepared thermoresponsive nanoparticles are promising candidates as carriers for medicine toward related biomedical applications. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Cu(I)-mediated and metal-free click polymerizations of azides and terminal alkynes have been developed into powerful techniques for constructing linear and hyperbranched polytriazoles. However, the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of azides with internal alkynes is rarely employed as a synthetic tool to prepare functional polymers. In this work, metal-free phenylpropiolate-azide polycycloaddition was developed for efficient synthesis of poly(phenyltriazolylcarboxylate)s (PPTCs), a kind of polyester. The aromatic and aliphatic diphenylpropiolates could readily react with diazides under heating, affording soluble PPTCs with high molecular weights (Mw up to 28 500) in excellent yields (up to 98%). The polymerization is insensitive towards oxygen and moisture, and can proceed smoothly in an open atmosphere. The obtained PPTCs are thermally stable with 5% weight loss temperatures higher than 318 °C. As the polymers contained ester groups, they exhibited fast degradation under basic conditions. The PPTC containing tetraphenylethene moieties shows a unique phenomenon of aggregation-induced emission, and can be employed as a fluorescent chemosensor to sensitively detect explosives. Its thin film can generate two-dimensional fluorescent photopatterns by UV irradiation.

Silver indium sulfide (AIS) quantum dots (QDs) with different Ag/In molar ratios were synthesized via a hot-injection method. Intense photoluminescence (PL) originating from the donor–acceptor pair recombination were observed for all the samples and the emission peak blue-shifted from 739 to 632 nm, being similar to the behavior of the absorption onset as the Ag/In ratios decreased. The highest PL quantum yield (QY) of the obtained ternary AIS QDs was ca. 62% with an optimum ratio of Ag/In = 1/4. Compared with AIS QDs, when Zn ions were introduced, the absorption spectra of the obtained quaternary Ag–Zn–In–S QDs were blue-shifted, and their emission peaks moved to higher energies accordingly, showing a tunable emission from red to green by altering the band gap energy. In order to further study the electroluminescence (EL) as well as looking forward to the applications in the optoelectronic devices of the obtained highly luminescent nanoparticles, the colloidal AIS QDs were deposited as thin films to the sandwich-like structured QD-LED. The experimental results showed that the obtained EL device exhibited EL emission originated from QDs thin films by adjusting the turn on voltage, which is for the first time to realize EL of AIS QDs in such QD-LED.

Poly(N-arylenebenzimidazole ketone ketone pyridine)s have been prepared via N–C coupling reaction that removed the N–H sites from the novel bis(benzimidazoyl) derivatives with activated aromatic difluorides in sulfolane. The reaction was carried out at 210°C in the presence of anhydrous potassium carbonate. The structures of the polymers were characterized by means of Fourier transform infrared and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies and elemental analysis. All resulting polymers showed essentially amorphous patterns. Differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric measurements showed that the polymers had high glass transition temperatures (>179°C), good thermostability, and high decomposition temperatures (>401°C). These novel polymers also showed easy solubility.

A new kind of biodegradable poly(urethane-urea)s based on poly-lysine oligomer used as the soft segment was synthesized and characterized. In vitro degradation behavior of poly (urethane-urea)s was investigated, and was assessed by 1H NMR and mass loss. The results indicated that the peptide bonds in poly(urethane-urea)s were effectively cleaved in simulated pancreatic juice containing trypsin, while those in buffer solution without trypsin remained unaffected. The degradability was obviously improved by introducing poly-lysine oligomer into the main chain of poly(urethane-urea)s. The results of cells viability test indicated that the poly (urethane-urea)s showed a good biocompatibility on endothelial cells. The thermostability and hydrophilicity of poly(urethane-urea)s increased with increase in poly-lysine oligomer content.

TiO2 is an abundant and environmentally benign material, but has a wide band gap, which greatly confines its applications in photocatalysis. Doping and modifying the material composition are both generally used to change and control the photocatalytic activity of semiconductors. Herein, we describe a method and resulting activity of depositing Ce-/S-codoped TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) on water-soluble sulfonated graphene (SGE) sheets, which guarantees a direct contact and satisfactory electron transfer between the semiconductor and graphene. The Ce/S–TiO2 NPs are homogeneously fixed on the surface of SGE sheets with an average particle size of ∼7 nm. The resulting composite showed noticeable activity in photodegrading methyl orange (κ = 0.425 h−1). This improved performance can be attributed to the synergistic effects of Ce- and S-codoping toward TiO2 and the composite action between TiO2 NPs and SGE. This type of novel composite is expected to stimulate the development of doped and graphene-involved photocatalysts for addressing environmental problems.

In this work, the solid electrolyte of Li1.5Al0.5Ge1.5(PO4)3 (LAGP) is used to suppress polysulfides shuttling in Li–S cells. Firstly, the H-type visible cell is assembled by using a LAGP glass ceramic plate and normal poly-propylene (PP) separator. It is demonstrated that the LAGP glass ceramic plate is quite effective in shutting-down the migration of polysulfide ions and improving the utilization ratio of the sulfur cathode. However, in the commercial production of Li–S batteries it is not possible to use the LAGP glass ceramic plate as a membrane due to its brittle characteristics. Herein, the LAGP modified separator has been prepared by a simple casting procedure and applied in Li–S cells. The Li-ion conductivity of the LAGP modified separator is 6.280 × 10−4 S cm−1 at room temperature. The Li-ion transference number and the Gurley value of the modified separator show that the diffusion of the polysulfide anions can be suppressed effectively. The discharge capacity of the Li–S cell with the modified separator at the 50th cycle can reach 770.1 mA h g−1, while that of the Li–S cell with the routine PP separator is only 658.4 mA h g−1 at the 50th cycle. The superior utilization of sulfur in the Li–S cells indicates that using the LAGP modified separator is a viable way to overcome the shuttling problem for practical Li–S batteries.

Macrocycles possess potential applications in supramolecular chemistry and biosystems. Thus development of new kinds of macrocycles is of significance. Herein, novel macrocycles containing Se–Se/Se–S bonds were synthesized via transformation between selenium related dynamic covalent bonds. A monomer containing two ebselen moieties was synthesized ( M1 ). The Se–N bonds in M1 were reduced by dithiothreitol, forming Se–S linked dimer ( D1 ). To realize the transformation from Se–S bonds to Se–Se bonds, guest molecules were added as template, triggering the formation of Se–Se linked dimer ( D2 ). The formation of these two new kinds of macrocycles was determined by 1 H NMR and 77 Se NMR, and the necessity of guest molecules was also confirmed. The introduction of ebselen moieties and Se–S bonds or Se–Se bonds into macrocycles may endow it with new responsiveness and bioactivities, as well as new types of host-guest chemistry.
