By utilizing different small amine molecules as structure-affecting agents (SAAs) and charge-balancing agents (CBAs), four new M–Sn–Q (M = Zn, Ag; Q = S, Se) compounds with the anionic architectures ranging from a one-dimensional (1D) chain to a three-dimensional (3D) network have been solvothermally synthesized. Compound [(Me)2NH2]2ZnSn3Se8 (1) features an anionic (4,4) layer of [ZnSn3Se8]n2n– and represents a rare [ZnSn3Se10] T2 cluster-based two-dimensional Zn–Sn–Se compound directed by organic amine. Compound [NH4]3AgSn3Se8 (2) contains infinite linear anionic chains of [AgSn3Se8]n3n–. Compound [CH3NH3]2[H3O]Ag5Sn4Se12·C2H5OH (3) exhibits a 3D open-framework structure of [Ag5Sn4Se12]n3n– with intersecting 3D channels. Compound [CH3NH3]6Ag12Sn6S21 (4) features a 3D framework structure with 1D channels filled by [CH3NH3]+ cations. The most fascinating structural feature of compound 4 is that a complex 3D [Ag12S17]n22n– anionic network exists based on the combination of three types of basic building blocks of [AgS2] dumbbells, [AgS3] triangles, and [AgS4] tetrahedra. The thermal stabilities, optical properties of the title compounds 1–4, as well as the theoretical band structure and density of states of compound 4 have been studied. Moreover, compound 3 displayed visible-light-driven photocatalytic activity for the degradation of crystal violet.

Although the substitution of Cu by Ag to suppress CuZn defects offers several advantages in overcoming the large open-circuit voltage (Voc) deficit for Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 (CZTSSe) solar cells, an excellent performance has not been achieved to date primarily due to the Fermi level pinning at the CdS/absorber interface and large recombination at the absorber/Mo interface. Herein, we developed a composition grading strategy to achieve a V-shaped Ag-graded structure with a higher Ag content on both the back and front surfaces of the (Cu,Ag)2ZnSn(S,Se)4 (CAZTSSe) layer. The key advantages of this Ag-graded structure are as follows: the higher content towards the CdS/absorber interface can create weak n-type donor defects and retard Fermi level pinning, whereas the lower content at the interlayer maintains the conductivity and light absorption; moreover, the other higher content towards Mo back contact can effectively suppress the recombination and improve the utilization of long-wave incident light. By appropriately adjusting the Ag gradient, we demonstrated a significant increase in Voc, and an unexpected conversion efficiency of 11.2% was achieved. This is the highest efficiency achieved to date for Ag-substituted CZTSSe solar cells, and the result supports a new aspect that synthesis of a composition-graded CAZTSSe absorber has great potential for future research.

A novel and versatile metal–organic molecular precursor-based solution approach and the fabrication of high efficiency Cu(In,Ga)(S,Se)2 solar cells are presented. Many types of metal oxides, hydroxides, and acetylacetonates (acac), such as Cu2O, ZnO, SnO, Sb2O3, MnO, PbO, In(OH)3, Cd(OH)2, Ga(acac)3, and so forth, can be easily dissolved in butyldithiocarbamic acid, forming thermally degradable metal–organic molecular precursor solutions. By developing a simple and green ethanol solution-processed route and tuning the chemical composition of the Cu(In,Ga)(S,Se)2 thin film, as-fabricated solar cells exhibit an average power conversion efficiency up to 8.8%.

Single-atom catalysts towards the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) often suffer from unsatisfactory activity and poor stability. Herein, for the first time, we successfully modulated the electronic structure of the Mn–N–C catalyst by introducing chalcogen oxygen groups (XO2, X = S, Se, Te), which induce changes in the Mn–N bond length in the MnN4 structure, thereby modulating the electronic structure of the metal center Mn. The experimental results demonstrate that the introduction of XO2 groups results in the rearrangement of Mn 3d electrons, which can be strongly correlated with the ORR activity of the Mn–N–C catalysts, among which the SeO2 modification increases the kinetic current density of the Mn–N–C catalyst achieving a half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.79 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode, approaching that of Fe–N–C catalysts along with significant stability in acidic media. The promising performance of the Mn–N–C catalyst as a PGM-free cathode was confirmed through fuel cell testing. First-principles calculations demonstrate that the introduced XO2 group downshifts the d-band center of the Mn center, thus successfully optimizing the adsorption of oxygen intermediates. This finding significantly facilitates the activity enhancement of Mn–N–C catalysts via the construction of a geometric structure–electronic structure–catalytic property relationship.

Indium tin oxide (ITO) is usually served as the transparent conductive electrode of Cu(In, Ga)(S, -Se) 2 (CIGSSe) solar cells. However, ITO is fabricated by sputtering method, which will increase the cost of CIGSSe solar cells and prevent its large-scale market applications in the future. Hence, it is particularly important to develop low-cost transparent conductive window layers to replace the traditional ITO. Silver nanowires (AgNWs) are considered to be the most promising alternative to ITO. Compared with sputtered ITO, AgNWs have the advantages of high transmittance, low cost, and easy fabrication. Nevertheless, the poor adhesion and stability of AgNWs can prevent the transportation of carriers of CIGSSe solar cells. Here, we select amorphous TiO x as an adjuvant to fabricate AgNWs/TiO x composite transparent conductive layer to substitute the traditional ITO. Under the assistance of TiO x matrix, not only the connection, adhesion, and stability of AgNWs are greatly enhanced, but also the surface roughness of AgNWs is also reduced. The influence of AgNWs concentration on the performance of CIGSSe solar cells is investigated. When the AgNWs concentration is 2.5 mg/mL, the transmittance and sheet resistance of AgNWs thin film are 93.35% and 93 Ω/sq, respectively, and the devices achieved the highest efficiency of 13.59%.

Antimony selenosulfide (Sb 2 (S,Se) 3 ) thin films hold significant potential in the photovoltaic field due to their tunable bandgap, high absorption coefficient (>10 5 cm −1 ), earth-abundant, and low-toxicity constituents. However, serious trapped-carrier recombination at deep-defect levels limits their efficient applications. In this sense, it is urgently necessary to address the issues of the defects and enhancing film properties. This study optimizes solution-processed Sb 2 (S,Se) 3 films by adjusting the antimony/sulfur (Sb/S) atomic ratio in precursors and the post-selenization temperature. Results show that an optimal Sb/S atomic ratio of 2/3.55 in precursors improves the crystallinity, enlarges the grain size, and minimizes the antimony-oxygen (Sb-O) impurities; this suppresses the deep-trapped carriers’ non-radiative recombination, and reduces the defect density in the Sb 2 (S,Se) 3 films. Furthermore, it is found that the selenization at an optimal temperature of 350 °C further increases the grain size, broadens the light absorption, and diminishes the deep-level defects, which is clearly revealed by the transient absorption experiments. This dual-parameter optimization strategy may promote the development of the high-performance Sb 2 (S,Se) 3 films towards high-efficiency photovoltaic applications.

Mo vacancy (V Mo ) and Se vacancy (V Se ) are doped into Bi 2 MoO 6 (BMO) and ZnSe, respectively, while they are mechanically ground and mixed to fabricate the dual S-scheme heterojunction. The lattice distortion is observed at the interface between V Mo -BMO and V Se -ZnSe/CdSe (V Se -ZCS) while XPS results confirm the construction of the dual S-scheme heterojunction V Mo -BMO/V Se -ZCS (V Mo+Se -BZCS). DFT simulation demonstrate that the doping of V Mo and V Se lead to more electrons transferring spontaneously through the heterojunction interfaces and promote the IEF strength accordingly. Both in-situ XPS and fs-TAS characterization prove the presence of a fast photoinduced charge transfer pathway from V Mo -BMO to V Se -ZnSe under LED light irradiation. V Mo and V Se function as the holes trapping center in V Mo -BMO and the electron trapping center in V Se -ZCS, respectively, thereby effectively suppressing the electron-hole recombination, which enhances the redox capability of V Mo+Se -BZCS together with the fast charge transferring. During the photocatalytic degradation experiments for the wastewater containing both tetracycline (TC) and Cr(VI), both the TC and the Cr(VI) degradation efficiency of V Mo+Se -BZCS are competitive under either LED or xenon lamp irradiation in comparison with some reported catalysts. Dual doping of V Mo and V Se were testified to amplify the bi-directional promotion effects (BPEs) between TC and Cr(VI).

Among the two half-reactions of the electrochemical water splitting, the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a kinetically sluggish process and usually requires noble metal oxide catalysts. Therefore, the development of highly active, noble metal-free, and durable catalysts for OER is an urgent need for sustainable applications. The encapsulation of transition-metal alloyed nanoparticles in graphitic carbon layers, with core-shell features, is a viable approach for establishing an undegradable and highly efficient catalyst toward OER. Furthermore, the reactivity of the carbon shell surface can be further improved by the electron transfers between the core alloy and carbon shell, through a control of the alloyed nanoparticle compositions, or through a chemical doping. Nevertheless, it is still not clear whether the incorporation of a chemical dopant directly into the carbon shells systematically promotes the catalytic activities toward OER. To clarify this point, we synthetize trimetallic (CoNiFe) nanoparticles encapsulated in graphitic carbon shells by pyrolysis of metal−organic frameworks. We then investigate the effect of a doped graphitic carbon shell by incorporating non-metallic elements such as sulfur, phosphorus, and selenium. The main finding is that all doped CoNiFe@C core-shell catalysts exhibit an enhanced catalytic activity toward OER in the alkaline electrolyte with a low overpotential, a small Tafel slope, and long stability, which are all being comparable to those of RuO 2 benchmark. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy , X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic, and Raman measurements collected at different applied potentials during the OER process indicate that the doping of graphitic carbon shell significantly improves the interfacial electron-transfer kinetics and facilitates the adsorption of OH − ion as well as promotes the formation of metal oxyhydroxide, which positively affect the OER performances. Moreover, this improvement in OER efficiency upon incorporating of a chemical doping is rationalized by the optimization of the Gibbs free energy of OER intermediates, thereby remarkably reducing the required energy input of rate-determining step, as elucidated by the density functional theory calculations.

The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses showed that the three compounds structures were 0-D {[Zn(tren)] 2 CdSb 2 Se 6 } ( 1 ) cluster, 1-D {[Mn(tren)]CdSb 2 Se 5 } ( 2 ) ribbon and 2-D {[Fe(tren)]Cd 2 SbSe 5 } ( 3 ) layered. A series of characterizations of these compounds were performed, as estimated from the adsorption spectra, the band gaps of 1 , 2 and 3 are 2.09, 1.78 and 1.91eV, respectively. Photoluminescence experiments show that compounds 2 and 3 exhibit luminescent properties. The aberrant vascularization and uneven vascular distribution stemming from rapid tumor cell proliferation culminate arouse intra-tumoral hypoxia, which substantially compromises the therapeutic response to conventional chemotherapy, as well as photothermal therapy (PTT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT). In this work, we present an innovative α-NaYbF4:Tm@Cu2-xSe@ZnFe2O4-DOX nanoplatform that synergistically integrates PTT, Fenton reaction-enhanced chemodynamic therapy, PDT, and doxorubicin (DOX)-based chemotherapy under 980 nm near-infrared (NIR) light activation and weakly acidic environment-initiation. The 10 nm cubic-phase α-NaYbF4:Tm up-conversion cores were initially synthesized. Subsequently, low atomic number (Z) Cu2-xSe nanocrystal grown as photo-thermal conversion agent demonstrated significantly stronger X-radiation (X-ray) attenuation capabilities and enhanced computed tomography (CT) imaging performance compared to clinically used iopromide. Furthermore, zinc ferrite (ZnFe2O4) shell was obtained in hydrothermal synthesis manner. The 980 nm NIR-excited α-NaYbF4:Tm nanoparticles undergo efficient energy down-conversion, emitting photons that perfectly match the absorption spectrum of ZnFe2O4, thereby maximizing reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation through bandgap-engineered photoconversion. The tumor's glycolytic activity creates a hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-rich microenvironment, enabling ZnFe2O4-mediated Fenton-like reactions that produce hydroxyl radicals (•OH) radicals, ultimately triggering oxidative damage and apoptotic cell death. It is noted that dual-mode photothermal therapeutic efficacy was achieved by Cu2-xSe and ZnFe2O4 as photothermal nanocrystal with up-conversion luminescence (UCL), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and CT multimodal imaging. DOX as anticancer chemotherapeutics was conjugated to form α-NaYbF4:Tm@Cu2-xSe@ZnFe2O4-DOX nanoplatforms. It remains effectively release of large quantities of DOX at tumor part conferred response to excessive lactic and carbonic acids generated in cancer cells. Our research may provide an insight for generalizing enhanced synergetic performance by NIR light-mediated PTT, Fenton reaction, PDT and chemotherapy. It is not a simple assembly of known components, but rather a multi-functional synergistic system constructed through ingenious core-shell structural design, capable of responding to near-infrared light and the tumor microenvironment. For the first time, this system seamlessly integrates up-conversion luminescence-mediated PDT, dual photothermal agent-enhanced PTT, self-supplying H2O2 Fenton reactions, and acid/heat dual-responsive chemotherapy into a single nanoplatform. Additionally, it incorporates multimodal imaging capabilities, providing an innovative and comprehensive solution to overcome the clinical challenge of tumor hypoxia.

Herein, Na 2 SSeO 3 solutions are prepared by hydrothermal method at 140 °C for 8 h using Se powder and Na 2 SO 3 solution (the molar ratios of Se:Na 2 SO 3 = 1:4, 1:5, 1:6) and the chemical composition of Na 2 SSeO 3 solutions is analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Sb 2 S y Se 3− y thin films are prepared by chemical bath deposition (CBD) at 90 °C for 5 h and subsequently annealed at 375 °C for 10 min and etched by N -butyldithiocarbamic acid solution in DMF. The effect of the Na 2 SSeO 3 solution, growth solution volume, etching on the thickness and chemical composition of Sb 2 S y Se 3− y thin films, and the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the corresponding solar cells is systematically investigated. The result reveals that the Na 2 SSeO 3 solutions may be the mixing solutions containing Na 2 SSeO 3 , Na 2 S 2 SeO 6 , Na 2 S 2 Se 2 O 6 , Na 2 Se. When the molar ratio of Se:Na 2 SO 3 and growth solution volume is 1:5 and 56 mL and the Sb 2 S y Se 3− y thin films with annealing are etched, the PCE of Sb 2 S y Se 3− y solar cells is 8.00% with spiro-OMeTAD and 8.43% with spiro-OMeTAD:TMT-TTF. The PCE of 8.43% is the highest value for Sb 2 S y Se 3− y solar cells using CBD and demonstrates that the composition engineering is an important strategy for improving the PCE of Sb 2 S y Se 3− y solar cells using CBD.

The cerium (Ce)-based UiO-66 metal-organic frameworks were employed for the first time as an effective catalyst for both oxidation and reduction. On one hand, selenium (Se)(VI) was efficiently photo-reduced to volatile species derived from the low lying of Ce 4f orbital and efficient generation of photo-electrons through the frameworks of UiO-66(Ce); on the other hand, the chromogenic substrate, 3, 3′, 5, 5′-tetramethylbenzydine (TMB), was oxidized based on the oxidase-like behavior of UiO-66(Ce) derived from the Ce 4+ /Ce 3+ spontaneous redox couple. The photo-reduced Se(VI) was determined by atomic fluorescence spectrometry , with a linear range of 5.0–200.0 μg/L − 1 , correlation coefficient of 0.998, and detection limit of 1.5 ng/mL − 1 obtained. The colorimetric sensing of mercury (Hg)(II) was accomplished based on the inhibition of TMB oxidation via Hg (II)-TMB interaction, with two linear ranges of 0.1–2.0 μM and 2.25–4.1 μM obtained, and a correlation coefficient of 0.993 and 0.995 obtained, respectively. The catalytic activity of UiO-66(Ce) was demonstrated to be satisfactory for both oxidation and reduction, which further explored the application of UiO-66(Ce) in the field of catalysis.
