Preparation of TiO2@Sn(Sb)O2 core–shell composites and their applications for electrocatalytic degradation of methylene blue

Zhang He,Qian Jianhua,Zhang Jie,Xu Jiasheng

TiO 2 @Sn(Sb)O 2 core–shell composites (TiO 2 @SnO 2 , TiO 2 @Sb 2 O 4 and TiO 2 @Sb-SnO 2 ) have been prepared through a chemical co-precipitation method with a calcination process. The mixture hydrolysates of SnCl 4 and SbCl 3 have been deposited on the surface of TiO 2 as the precursor. These hydrolysates have been converted to Sn(Sb)O 2 particles, leading to the formation of the TiO 2 @Sn(Sb)O 2 core–shell structure. Their electrochemical performances and electrocatalytic degradation efficiencies of methylene blue (MB) have been investigated. It is found that TiO 2 @Sb-SnO 2 electrode presents a larger effective electrocatalytic area and more electroactive sites, which provide more contact points between the pollutant and electrode and enhance electrocatalytic oxidation activity. The TiO 2 @Sb-SnO 2 electrode exhibits a higher degradation efficiency (97.6%) than that of TiO 2 @SnO 2 (80.1%) and TiO 2 @Sb 2 O 4 (34.9%). The TiO 2 @Sb-SnO 2 electrode provides a 91.1% degradation efficiency after five cycles test, indicating a high stability during degradation process. These results show that the as-prepared TiO 2 @Sb-SnO 2 electrode can provide a promising application to treat dye wastewater, which relies on its core–shell structure.

Synthesis of (Sn,Zn)(O,S) bimetallic oxysulfide catalyst for the detoxification of Cr+6 in aqueous solution

Osman Ahmed Zelekew,Dong-Hau Kuo,Hairus Abdullah

Herein, we report the bimetallic (Sn,Zn)(O,S) oxysulfide nanocatalyst with a facile method. The Sn-based catalyst with the addition of Zn was synthesized with the proportions of 0, 20, 30 and 50% of Zn to Sn precursors for preparation. The catalysts were characterized by XRD , TEM , SEM XPS , and UV–vis instruments. The nanocatalysts were also tested for the detoxification of Cr +6 . The Sn-20 catalyst with 20 M percent of Zn(Ac) 2 ·2H 2 O showed an excellent performance for the induced photocatalytic reduction of Cr +6 under visible light irradiation at room temperature. The complete reduction of Cr +6 was achieved within 80 min by Sn-20 catalyst. However, 85.6, 97, and 94% of Cr +6 reductions were achieved within 80 min under visible light illumination by Sn-0, Sn-30, and Sn-50 catalysts, respectively. Hence, the bimetallic (Sn,Zn)(O,S) oxysulfide nanocatalyst will be a candidate and highly potential material for the detoxification of Cr(VI)-containing polluted water.

Sustainable Chemoenzymatic Cascade Transformation of Corncob to Furfuryl Alcohol with Rice Husk-Based Heterogeneous Catalyst UST-Sn-RH

Qizhen Yang,Zhengyu Tang,Jiale Xiong,Yucai He

Valorization of the abundant renewable lignocellulose through an efficient chemoenzymatic strategy to produce the furan-based platform compounds has raised great interest in recent years. In this work, a newly prepared sulfonated tin-loaded rice husk-based heterogeneous chemocatalyst UST-Sn-RH was utilized to transform corncob (75.0 g/L) into furfural (72.1 mM) at 170 °C for 30 min in an aqueous system. To upgrade furfural into furfuryl alcohol, whole cells of recombinantE. coli KPADH harboring alcohol dehydrogenase were employed to transform corncob-derived furfural into furfuryl alcohol at 30 °C and pH 7.5. In the established chemoenzymatic cascade process, corncob was efficiently transformed to furfuryl alcohol with a productivity of 0.304 g furfuryl alcohol/(g xylan in corncob). In general, biomass could be efficiently valorized into valuable furan-based chemicals in this tandem reaction with the chemocatalyst (bio-based UST-Sn-RH) and the biocatalyst (KPADH cell) in an aqueous system, which has potential application. Keywords:furfural;furfuryl alcohol;heterogeneous catalyst;chemoenzymatic strategy

Aerosol-Assisted Synthesis of Sn–Si Composite Oxide Microspheres with the Hollow Mesoporous Structure for Baeyer–Villiger Oxidation

Qingrun Meng,Xiaoxu Gao,Ting Sun,Yu Guo,Huimin Liu

Tetravalent Sn species, such as zeolite or oxide, possess Lewis acidic properties, and thus exhibit prominent catalytic performance in several reactions when they are incorporated into the silica framework. Unfortunately, the synthesis of Sn-based zeolite (Sn–Beta) usually suffers from several drawbacks, including a long crystallization time, limited framework Sn content and complex synthesis steps. Sn-based composite oxides are favored in the industry, due to their simple synthesis steps and easy control of their pore structure, morphology and Sn content. In this work, an aerosol-assisted method is used to prepare Sn–Si composite oxide microspheres, using CTAB as template. The method is based on the formation of aerosol from a solution of Sn, Si precursors and a template (CTAB). The introduction of CTAB causes the surface tension of the atomized droplets to decrease. During the fast drying of the droplets, the Sn–Si composite oxide microspheres with a concave hollow morphology were first formed. After calcination, calibrated mesopores of 2.3 nm were also formed, with a specific surface area of 1260 m2/g and a mesopores ratio of 0.84. Sn species are incorporated in the silica network, mainly in the form of single sites. The resulting material proved to exhibit high catalytic performances in the Baeyer–Villiger oxidation of 2-adamantanone by using H2O2as green oxidant, which was mainly attributed to the enhancement of the access to the catalytic tin sites through both the continuous hollow and mesopore channels, which have a 52% conversion of 2-adamantanone after 3 h of reaction. This method is simple, convenient, cheap and can be continuously produced, meaning it has broad potential for industrial application. Keywords:aerosol process;Sn–Si composite oxide;hollow mesoporous microspheres;CTAB;Baeyer–Villiger oxidation

Signal-off tuned signal-on (SF-T-SN) colorimetric immunoassay for amantadine using activity-metalmodulated peroxidase-mimicking nanozyme

Xiaoming Ma,Shan He,Ying Zhang,Jianguo Xu,Huifang Zhang,Zhen Wang,Jun Xue,Xun Li,Wenbo Yu,Xiaolin Fan

Immunoassays facilitate a wide range of rapid, simple and sensitive biochemical detection analyses. We developed a signal-off tuned signal-on (SF-T-SN) colorimetric immunoassay for the detection of the antiviral drug, amantadine (AMD). Using this strategy, the conventional competitive signal-off immunoassay acts as a foundation to induce different immune recognition events in the absence and presence of AMD. The introduction of activity-metal modulated peroxidase-mimicking nanozymes converts the conventional signal-off model to a signal-on model, thereby facilitating drug detection, and overcoming disadvantages with natural enzymes. Importantly, due to switching of the reporting mechanism, and the high catalytic activity of the nanozyme, this “off-to-on” pathway makes the nanozyme-based colorimetric signal proportional to AMD concentrations, thereby circumventing the inherent drawbacks of limited signaling abilities and sensitivities with conventional signal-off immunoassay-based small molecule detection systems. AMD concentrations can be read by the eye or by the optical signals. Based on this protocol, system sensitivity (0.195 ng mL −1 AMD for the naked eye, and 0.134 ng mL −1 AMD for optical detection) not only outperformed reported methods, but it dramatically improved the naked eye observations and UV–vis measurements, when compared with conventional signal-off immunoassays. AMD concentrations spiked into chicken samples were also detected with acceptable recoveries, and relative standard derivations (RSD), indicating this method is highly applicable for biochemical analyses and food safety monitoring.

Synthesis and evaluation of Mn–Sn modified Ru–Ir electrode for electrocatalytic treatment of high chloride acrylonitrile wastewater

Zhen-Xing Yang,Fang-Fang Ye,Ding Pan,Guang-Xu Yan,Shao-Hui Guo

Acrylonitrile wastewater was an organic wastewater with strong toxicity and poor biodegradability. Therefore, electro-catalytic technology became a promising acrylonitrile wastewater treatment technology because of no secondary pollution, wide application range and low water quality requirements. The optimal Mn-Sn modified Ru-Ir electrode material was synthesized by thermal method and applied in electro-catalytic treatment of acrylonitrile wastewater. The electrode materials were characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS and electrochemical characterization. SEM, TEM, XRD and XPS indicated that Mn and Sn were capable of incorporating and replacing the part of Ru or Ir and could alter the microstructure of Ru-Ir and the types of Mn and Sn oxides, raising the oxygen evolution potential (OEP) and voltampere charge. When the molar ratio of Mn-Sn was 1:1, OEP, voltampere charge and exchange current density could reach 1.303 V, 1.51 C/cm2 and 6.29×10-4 A/cm2, respectively. The co-doping of Mn-Sn had significant influence on the electrocatalytic performance of Ru-Ir electrode materials. The optimum synthesis conditions of Mn-Sn modified Ru-Ir electrode were as follows: the molar ratio of Mn-Sn was 1:1, calcination time was 4.0 hours, calcination temperature was 450℃, and solvent was water. Under certain conditions, the removal rate of acrylonitrile with Mn-Sn modified Ru-Ir electrode was 100%. Mn-Sn modified Ru-Ir electrode had high oxygen evolution potential and good removal effect of acrylonitrile, which was higher than that of ruthenium iridium electrode and RuO2 electrode.

Enhancing the effective mass and covalent bond strength of Cu3SbSe4-based thermoelectric materials by Mn/Sn co-doping

Sitong Wei,Lu Yu,Zipei Zhang,Zhen Ji,Sitong Luo,Jingxuan Liang,Weiyu Song,Shuqi Zheng

Cu 3 SbSe 4 -based thermoelectric materials , known for their complex crystal structure and splendid Seebeck coefficient , have garnered significant attention. However, a major challenge in this field is further enhancing the thermoelectric performance while effectively controlling the carrier concentration. In this work, a novel doping strategy is proposed to effectively adjust the energy band structure by Mn doping while simultaneously increasing the carrier concentration and the effective mass of the density of states , thereby optimizing the power factor. Additionally, Sn doping is employed to boost the carrier concentration significantly while strengthening the covalent bonds , thereby improving the samples’ stability. As a result, the Cu 3 Sb 0.92 Mn 0.06 Sn 0.02 Se 4 sample achieves a zT value of 0.74 at 673 K. Moreover, the Cu 3 Sb 0.93 Mn 0.06 Sn 0.01 Se 4 sample exhibits an average zT value of 0.39 within the temperature range of 273–675 K. This research sheds light on an approach for designing high-performance Cu 3 SbSe 4 -based thermoelectric materials by manipulating the carrier concentration and enhancing the covalent bond strength through doping.

Synthesis of electronegative S-filled and Sn–Te double substituted skutterudite compounds by HPHT and its thermoelectric properties

Yaqi Chen,Xin Fan,Shan Gao,Wenting Ji,Xinjian Li,Yuewen Zhang,Hongan Ma,Xiaopeng Jia

Electronegative S-filled skutterudite compounds have attracted considerable attention due to scattering of low-frequency phonons (35–50 cm − 1 ), but there are few reports on S-filled double-substituted skutterudite. In this work, a series of S-filled Te-Sn double-substituted skutterudite compounds were synthesized using high pressure and high temperature (HPHT) method. The phase composition, microstructure, and thermoelectric properties of S x Co 4 Sb 1 1 Te 0 . 7 Sn 0 . 3 ( x = 0 , 0.05, 0.10, 0.20) samples were systematically determined. The results show that the introduction of S increases the substitution limit of Te in the Sb site. Under the combined effect of the sample synthesis pressure and S filling, the nucleation density of the sample grains increases and the grain size decreases. At the same time, there are numerous special microstructures in the samples synthesized in a high-pressure environment. Thermoelectric performance studies show that a small amount of S filling optimizes the Seebeck coefficient of the sample and increases the power factor (PF). With an increase of the amount of S introduced, the thermal conductivity of the samples decreases significantly. Therefore, the maximum zT value of an S 0 . 0 5 Co 4 Sb 1 1 Te 0 . 7 Sn 0 . 3 sample synthesized at 2.5 GPa pressure is 0.17 at room temperature. The maximum zT value of the sample is 1.26 at 773 K.

Sn and Mn co-doping synergistically promotes the sensing properties of Co3O4 sensor for high-sensitive CO detection

Cong Qin,Zhanxiang Wei,Bing Wang,Yingde Wang

In the realm of gas sensors, p-type metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) usually exhibits inherently low sensitivity toward target gases caused by the hole accumulation layer configuration , which seriously hinders its practical application. Diatomics co-doping is an efficient tactic for adjusting the characteristics of MOS related to gas-sensing due to their synergistic effect . In this work, we controllably synthesized bare Co 3 O 4 , Sn-doped Co 3 O 4 , Mn-doped Co 3 O 4 and Sn/Mn co-doped Co 3 O 4 nanosheets . The experimental results reveal that Sn/Mn co-doped Co 3 O 4 sample presents porous nanosheets structure. 1 mol% Sn/Mn co-doped Co 3 O 4 sensor presents enhanced response [(R g -R a )/R a = 330 %∼40 ppm at 150 °C] toward CO compared with the bare Co 3 O 4 , 1 mol% Sn-doped Co 3 O 4 , and 1 mol% Mn-doped Co 3 O 4 nanosheets. Besides, 1 mol% Sn/Mn co-doped Co 3 O 4 nanosheets show a low limit of detection (500 ppb/experimental value), good stability and selectivity. We infer that the good CO-sensing properties may be ascribed to the oxygen vacancies defects generated by Sn 4+ and Mn 2+ /Mn 3+ co-doping, high Co 3+ ratio, and high specific surface area. This study affords an effective co-doping strategy for enhancing the gas-sensing performances of p-type MOS.

Structure and optical property evolution in PbM(PO4)X (M = Zn, Sn; X = halogen): SHG effect and birefringence

Xiao-Bao Li,Chun-Li Hu,Fang Kong,Jiang-Gao Mao

Four new phosphates, namely, PbZn(PO4)F (1), PbSn(PO4)Cl (2), PbSn(PO4)Br (3) and PbSn(PO4)I (4), were successfully synthesized by hydrothermal and solid-state reaction methods. PbZn(PO4)F (1) was crystallized in a polar space group Pna21 and showed a significant SHG intensity of about 1.6 × KDP. PbSn(PO4)Cl (2) and PbSn(PO4)Br (3) were isostructural compounds, and they were crystallized in a monoclinic space group P21/n while PbSn(PO4)I (4) was crystallized in a triclinic space group P. PbZn(PO4)F (1) features a new 3D framework while compounds 2–4 show a layered structure. Interestingly, the thermal stability and band gap of PbM(PO4)X are decreased with an increase of the atomic number of the halogen atom, while the rule for birefringence is the opposite. Our work revealed the evolution effects of the halogen atoms on the structure and optical properties of PbM(PO4)X compounds.

The important role of weak Brønsted acid site of Sn-β in conversion of sucrose to methyl lactate

Xiaomei Yang,Jie Hu,Tianliang Lu,Lipeng Zhou

Sucrose is an abundant, cheap and sustainable substrate for producing high value-added chemicals. In this work, the role of weak Brønsted (B) acid site of Sn-β zeolite was revealed in sucrose conversion to methyl lactate (MLA). Sn-β zeolites were prepared by post-synthesis and hydrothermal synthesis in F ‒ media and modified by Mg 2+ to tune the B acidity. The acidity of the zeolites was characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy of pyridine/CD 3 CN adsorption and hydroxyl region. Their catalytic performance for sucrose conversion to MLA in methanol indicates that weak B acid sites of silanols are indispensible for breaking the glycosidic bond of sucrose, so the highest MLA yield was obtained over the postsynthesized Mg-Sn-β-P with moderate amount of weak B acid sites of silanols, strong L acid sites and no strong B acid sites, which juggled the alcoholysis/hydrolysis of sucrose and the retro-aldol of C 6 monosaccharide to MLA, and at the same time inhibited the dehydration side-reaction.

Synthesis of sandwich-like structured Sn/SnOx@MXene composite through in-situ growth for highly reversible lithium storage

Ding-chuan Zuo,Sheng-chao Song,Chang-sheng An,Lin-bo Tang,Zhen-jiang He,Jun-chao Zheng

This study presents a nanostructured Sn/SnO x @Ti 3 C 2 composite by in-situ growth of Sn/SnO x nanoparticles on the interlayer of 2D MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) nanosheets through facile electrostatic attraction and liquid phase reduction. X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy results illustrate that Sn/SnO x nanoparticles are uniformly distributed into the MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) interlayer, forming a sandwich-like nanostructured composite. MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) nanosheets suppress Sn/SnO x nanoparticles’ volume expansion and agglomeration and accelerate the Li-ion and electron transition due to the distinguished confinement effect and excellent graphite-like layered structure. Furthermore, Sn/SnO x nanoparticles are embedded as pillars to enhance the longitudinal structural stability of MXene matrix by preventing the re-stacking of nanosheets during lithium insertion/extraction. The nanosized particles still reduce lithium migration path and increase active areas. Therefore, the Sn/SnO x @Ti 3 C 2 composite maintains 594.2 mAh g −1 after 200 cycles with a capacity recovery after 100 cycles. The synergistic effect of Sn/SnO x on MXene facilitates Sn/SnO x @Ti 3 C 2 nanostructures , thereby exhibiting excellent electrochemical properties for lithium-ion batteries.
