Simultaneous desalination and antibiotic degradation in aquaculture wastewater. • First integration of SPR heating and photocatalysis in single-component system. • Defect-engineered N-In 2 O 3-x nanoplatform achieves full solar spectrum utilization. • Outdoor device enables natural sunlight-driven fresh water production. • Scale-up field test shows practical treatment of saline aquaculture wastewater. The discharge of saline aquaculture wastewater containing persistent antibiotics poses a growing challenge due to its high salinity, complex composition, and resistance to conventional treatment. Here, we developed a solar-driven treatment process that coupled interfacial evaporation with in situ photocatalytic degradation, enabling simultaneous freshwater production and antibiotic removal without chemical inputs. This process is realized using a defect-engineered plasmonic nitrogen-doped, oxygen-deficient indium oxide interface derived from a metal-organic framework, which integrates rapid water transport, efficient photothermal conversion, and solar-driven reactive species generation. As a result, the system achieved a high evaporation rate of 3.16 kg m -2 h -1 , excellent salt resistance, and >97% tetracycline removal within 120 min. Notably, comparable degradation performance was maintained in real aquaculture wastewater, indicating strong resistance to matrix effects under high-salinity conditions. Outdoor field tests further demonstrated stable freshwater production (12.84 kg m -2 day -1 ) that meets WHO drinking water standards, along with effective antibiotic removal under natural sunlight. With an estimated materials-level cost of approximately $10.7 m -2 under bulk-procurement conditions and stable operation over 10 days, the system demonstrates preliminary potential for modular solar-driven treatment of antibiotic-contaminated aquaculture wastewater. In this work, N-doped biochar balls NBC 3 800 were prepared from waste biomass corn straw. The biochar balls supported by clay have an obvious spherical structure. Clay can enhance the adsorption capacity of the biochar balls to pollutants by its excellent adsorption property. Thus, the clay can speed up the catalytic reaction by strengthening the adsorption function. The biochar balls NBC 3 800 have the best catalytic performance and the removal rate of NC can reach 100% within 100 min. The electron transfer resistance of NBC 3 800 is only 36 Ω indicating a lower resistance value and higher conductivity to transfer electrons compared with carbon nanotube. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and electrochemical analysis show that sulfate radical (SO 4 •− ), hydroxyl radical (·OH), singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), and electron transfer are all involved in the reaction. The removal rate of NC can still be maintained at 83.41% after being reused five times. Besides, it can be further improved to 100% by high temperature regeneration at 800 ℃. Most importantly, the biochar balls can be separated from the solution very easily which not only extremely improves the recyclability but also avoids secondary pollution to the water body.

The reasonable construction of composite membranes with dual functions of rapid adsorption and photo-Fenton-like oxidation degradation holds great significance in the field of wastewater purification. Herein, a poly(vinylidene fluoride)-based composite membrane (denoted as CFT/PVDF) was meticulously prepared through a nonsolvent induced phase separation (NIPS) process with the introduction of cobalt-iron metal–organic framework (CoFe-MOF) and TiO 2 (Degussa P25). The composite membrane exhibited an excellent adsorption ability for removing a variety of organic pollutants from water. With the integration of adsorptive filtration and in situ photo-Fenton-like degradation, the removal efficiency of tetracycline hydrochloride reached up to 92.9% through the CFT/PVDF membrane in one filtration process, and the remarkable performance could be maintained after ten consecutive cycles. Moreover, a group of CFT/PVDF membranes was connected in series to realize the fast and continuous wastewater treatment. The photo-Fenton-like oxidation mechanism and possible degradation pathways were proposed on the basis of active-species detections and degradation intermediates analysis. The toxicological analysis indicated that tetracycline was in situ degraded into less toxic intermediates and even nontoxic substances by the CFT/PVDF composite membrane. This work provides some valuable guidance on the construction of self-cleaning membranes for sustainable wastewater remediation and potential applications.

Composite aerogels , formed by the combination of nanoscale polymers and highly efficient adsorbents, offer the potential to deploy adsorbent distinct separation properties into a processable matrix. This paper presents a method for the fabrication of low energy bio-aerogels with high ductility, excellent wet strength and favorable heat resistance , based on cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) bound by calcium carbonate particles (CaCO 3 ) via a simple process of ice induction, cross-linking during freezing and freeze-drying. Due to induced defects, two-dimensional metal-organic layers (MOLs) were rich in mesoporous structure and embedded in the aerogel (AG Ca -MOL), which exhibited a powerful adsorption capacity. AG Ca -MOL could take full advantage of their hierarchical pores and available surface area to obtain high adsorption capacity (0.694–5.470 μmol/g) and rapid adsorption kinetics (5 min) for 14 heterocyclic aromatic amines (HAAs). Moreover, the CaCO 3 particles and MOLs gave the AG Ca -MOL excellent thermal stability, so that it could maintain excellent adsorption capacity at a high temperature (100 °C) and be applied as an adsorbent to remove HAAs in the boiling marinade. The intrinsic potential of composite aerogels was revealed due to the synergistic properties of the various components in the composite aerogel.

As an emerging electrochemical device , aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) present promising potential in safe and large-scale energy storage. However, the large pores of commercial glass fiber (GF) separators result in uneven Zn 2+ ion flux , leading to severe dendrite growth issues of Zn metal anodes. Herein, we integrated a multifunctional layer on the GF separator that can synergistically regulate the pore feature and surface property of commercial GF separators. Such modification layer, composed of nanocellulose and SiO 2 nanoparticles , exhibited uniform nanoporous structure and abundant negatively charged polar functional groups. These features allow regulating the distribution of Zn 2+ ions at the separator-anode interface, facilitating stable and uniform Zn nucleation and growth. Moreover, the electrostatic interaction between the negatively charged functional groups and Zn 2+ ions enhanced the Zn 2+ ion transport kinetics, preventing the Zn dendrites formation and adverse reactions. Consequently, the modified electrolyte-filled GF separator showed an increased Zn 2+ ion transference number of 0.65. The symmetric Zn//Zn batteries utilizing such a separator achieved an impressive cycling life of 500 h at a high current density/capacity of 10 mA cm −2 /4 mAh cm −2 , nearly nine times longer than the battery using the unmodified GF separator (<55 h). The superior electrochemical performance was verified in both Zn//AC and Zn//LiMn 2 O 4 full battery evaluations. This work presents a novel synergistic modification strategy for developing advanced separators for aqueous ZIBs.

Among stimuli-responsive actuators, light-driven hydroplaning actuators have attracted significant attention because of their controllable and contactless nature. However, manufacturing actuators with rapid dynamic responses to a single stimulus remains challenging. Herein, inspired by rove beetles and water striders, we developed superhydrophobic light-driven actuators based on the in situ growth of copper sulfide on cellulose nanofiber and subsequent modification with octadecyltrimethoxysilane. The actuators exhibited excellent superhydrophobicity (water contact angle of 160.6°) and the water contact angle was maintained above 150° under various harsh conditions (acid/base immersion, ultraviolet irradiation, heat treatment, and sandpaper abrasion). Under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation (808 nm, 1.4 W cm −2 ), excellent photothermal performance was achieved, with a photothermal-induced temperature change of 81.0 °C. Based on the mechanisms of superhydrophobicity, the Marangoni effect, and vapor jet flow, the light-driven actuators exhibited a rapid dynamic response (response time of 0.5 ± 0.2 s), ensuring fast linear motion (velocity of 8.7 ± 0.7 mm s −1 ) and flexible rotation (angular speed of 2.4 rad s −1 ) under NIR irradiation. Moreover, complex motions such as S-shaped, triangular, and circular motions were achieved by combining linear motion and rotation, which could facilitate obstacle avoidance, smart transportation, and contactless delivery.

Over 100 million tons of cotton waste are produced annually, representing 35–40% of global textile waste. However, less than 30% of cotton waste is recycled annually. In particular, the fibers less than 7 mm in length dropped during the opening and carding process of cotton waste fabrics have not found a mature utilization method. This work demonstrates and reveals a strategy to transform short cotton fibers into a renewable cellulose fiber self-reinforcing composite paper (CCP). Recycled cotton staple fibers less than 3 mm were prepared into CNFs by TEMPO oxidation . The use of recycled cotton fiber (3–7 mm) as reinforcement and CNFs as a matrix results in a composite material bonded through hydrogen bonding. The recovered cotton fibers and CNFs soliquoid combine together to form a paper pulp, which is then transformed into CCP using wet-laid webs and hot-pressing techniques. When the CNF content reached 5%, the tensile strength of CCP was 86.68 MPa, which is 1.8 times that of the commercial A4 paper. The tensile strength of the CCP only decreases by 25% from the dry state to the wet state, while that of A4 paper after soaking water is almost zero. This makes CCP a special paper with broad application prospects. Since CNF extracted from cotton waste textiles is used as a strengthening agent and without any chemical adhesives added in the paper-making process, which makes the production process of CCP cleaner and can be recycled in a closed loop. Overall, the promising strategy achieves at least four objectives related to cleaner production: maximum recycling of cotton waste, CNF instead of traditional chemical adhesives used in paper-making, water recovery (internal recycling), and realising closed-loop recycling. This technology can potentially be applied to a wide range of colored papers and intelligent packaging papers in the future.

To clarify the evolution mechanism of environmentally-persistent free radicals (EPFRs) in biochar as a function of pyrolysis temperature, three-component pyrolytic carbon was characterized by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. Four types of EPFRs were distinguished by using the peak splitting method. The EPFRs in three-component pyrolytic carbon obtained at a pyrolysis temperature of 300 °C were mainly oxygen-containing free radicals (57.31–83.63 %). Upon increasing the pyrolysis temperature, simple aromatic ring radicals were formed by the dehydrogenation of biomass, and then the polymeric aromatic radicals formed, accompanied by π-electron delocalization to form phenyl-π radicals. Biomass pyrolysis was simulated by mechanically mixing the three components in different proportions. A comparison of the experimental and theoretical values indicated that interactions between the three components did not obviously affect the EPFR concentration in the range of 450–550 °C, with a maximum relative error of 12.78 %. A prediction model for the EPFRs concentration in multi-component pyrolytic carbon was proposed. This study also clarified the generation and transformation mechanisms of EPFRs in three-component pyrolytic carbon, thus providing guidance for generating and regulating biochar EPFRs.

Persulfate (PS)-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs) is a promising approach for the removal of ammonia nitrogen (NH 3 -N) from wastewater, but it suffered from the low removal efficiency and the excessive oxidation of NH 3 -N to nitrate (NO 3 − ) or nitrite (NO 2 − ) in the absence of in-situ generated chlorine radicals. Therefore, it is still a challenge to improve the efficiency of NH 3 -N removal and the selectivity of NH 3 -N oxidation products towards dinitrogen (N 2 ) by SR-AOPs without chlorine radicals. Herein, a novel photo-assisted activation of SR-AOPs involving sodium silicate (Na 2 SiO 3 ) and sodium sulfite (Na 2 SO 3 ) was developed for NH 3 -N removal from wastewater. In this system, Na 2 SiO 3 was acted as a green buffer to maintain NH 3 -N in the form of un-ionized ammonia (NH 3 ) with strong reducibility, promoting the efficiency of NH 3 -N removal as well as ensuring the neutral effluent by receiving the H + from PS activation. Na 2 SO 3 could inhibit the excessive oxidation of NH 3 -N by regulating the redox potential of the solution and generating hydrated electrons (e aq − ) under light ( hv) irradiation, enhancing the selectivity of NH 3 -N oxidation products towards N 2 . 100 % of NH 3 -N removal efficiency and more than 98 % of N 2 selectivity were obtained after 30 min at the initial pH of 3–9 and the initial NH 3 -N concentration of 30 mg N/L. Based on the quenching experiment, EPR test and probe experiment, the HO and SO 4 − were the main reactive oxygen species (ROS) to be responsible for NH 3 -N oxidation. This study proposed a new approach for treatment of wastewater containing NH 3 -N by SR-AOPs.

Photocatalytic hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) production and its application in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are regarded as low-cost and environmentally friendly wastewater treatment processes. Herein, by modifying a small amount of sulphide on the zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), a ZnS@ZIF-8 composite and used for photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production to degrade chlorinated organic pollutants under simulated sunlight (SSL). ZnS@ZIF-8 composite could enhance the separation of photo-induced charge carriers, promote electron transfer from zinc sulphide (ZnS) to ZIF-8, which exhibited good selectivity for the two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e - -ORR) and two-electron water oxidation (2e - -WOR) pathways. Based on oxygen (O 2 ) activation, the developed ZnS@ZIF-8/O 2 /SSL system could achieve 6.43 mmol/L H 2 O 2 production within 150 min, which was approximately 8.66 and 10.36 times higher than that of the ZnS/O 2 /SSL and ZIF-8/O 2 /SSL systems, respectively. In the ZnS@ZIF-8/O 2 /SSL system, the ORR, WOR and H 2 O 2 photolysis led to the generation of hydroxyl radical (•OH), while the photochemical behavior of ZnS in ZnS@ZIF-8 composite resulted in the generation of active hydrogen (*H). Benefitting from the high concentration of H 2 O 2 and the coexistence of redox species in the ZnS@ZIF-8/O 2 /SSL system, various chlorinated organic pollutants could be dechlorinated and mineralized. In addition, a possible mechanism for photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production was also proposed. Importantly, the proposed process did not involve an additional sacrificial agent or Fenton-like catalysts. This work provides insights into the potential application of ZnS@ZIF-8 composite for H 2 O 2 production and wastewater treatment.

Constructing donor–acceptor structures in polymeric carbon nitride (CN) provides an attractive pathway for facilitating charge carrier separation in photocatalytic reactions. However, achieving the implantation of donor or acceptor moieties at molecule level precision remains challenging. Here we develop a three-dimensional (3D) porous thiophene implanted carbon nitride (TCN) with donor–acceptor structure via a supramolecular assembly strategy. The specific-designed triazine derivatives with similar hydrogen bonding sites allow for the uniform introduction of thiophene groups at molecule level precision during the supramolecular assemble stage. The electron-donating thiophene groups in TCN can continuously tune electronic band structure, expand visible light absorption range, and promote charge carriers’ separation. The optimized properties enable TCN-3 an outstanding H 2 evolution rate of 5620 μmol h −1 g −1 , greatly exceeding bulk CN (95 μmol h −1 g −1 ). Briefly, our work may offer opportunities to prepare highly active photocatalysts with molecule level precise donor–acceptor structure.

Thermal insulation aerogel holds great promise in the transportation, storage, and use of temperature-sensitive electronic components under different environmental conditions. Due to their low density, high thermal stability, superior UV resistance, and low thermal conductivity , lignocellulose nanofibrils (LCNFs) aerogels meet the thermal insulation needs perfectly. However, the preparation of LCNFs aerogels with customizable size and high precision remains challenging. Herein, we report the following: (1) the preparation of LCNFs with tunable physicochemical properties from unbleached poplar pulp through the 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO)-mediated oxidation and ultrasonication approach, and (2) the 3D printing of customized thermal insulation materials using LCNFs as viscoelastic gelatinous inks. In addition to the chlorine-free bleaching merit, the LCNF inks exhibit much lower yield stress compared to cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) inks, thereby facilitating the smooth extrusion of filament under a much lower printing pressure. Furthermore, the residual lignin endows LCNFs aerogels with superior moisture tolerance, mechanical protection, UV resistance, and thermal insulation performance for temperature sensitive electronic components such as chips and batteries . This work opens a promising avenue for the rapid manufacturing of customizable thermal insulation materials in a sustainable, cost-effective, and eco-friendly manner.
