Simultaneous and accurate analysis of multiple heavy metals (HMs) in environment by electrochemical method still faces huge challenges, such as complex experimental process, low detection efficiency and the interference arising from electrochemical interactions between different HMs. To address these issues, we propose a sensing platform combining S-TiO 2 @Ti 3 C 2 MXene with machine learning strategies for simultaneous electrochemical detection of Cu 2+ and Hg 2+ in water samples. Specifically, surface morphology and crystal structure of S-TiO 2 @Ti 3 C 2 were characterized via SEM, XRD, and XPS. Electrochemical behaviors were systematically investigated using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). Orthogonal test-based multi-objective optimization method integrated with comprehensive balance approach were employed to determine the optimal sensing parameters, which were identified pH of 4.5, deposition time of 210 s, and deposition potential of −1.5 V. The fabricated sensor exhibited high sensitivities of 44.122 and 143.795 μA·L·mg −1 , low limits of detection of 0.392 and 0.093 μg·L −1 , and broad linear ranges of 0.001–1000 μg·L −1 for Cu 2+ and Hg 2+ , respectively. Furthermore, machine learning strategy was introduced to resolve the poor accuracy issue associated with traditional calibration curve analysis for the simultaneous detection of Cu 2+ and Hg 2+ across the entire linear range. The results indicated that minimum Redundancy Maximum Relevance (mRMR) algorithm effectively extracted valuable and critical information of Cu 2+ and Hg 2+ from the full voltammetric curves, and the constructed support vector machine (SVM) model remarkably improved detection accuracy. The reliability of the proposed SVM model was validated through simultaneous detection of HMs in actual environmental water samples, yielding favorable recovery rates.

Highly efficient charge migration and separation are critical for the design of high-efficiency and stable photocatalysts. In our work, novel 2D/2D/2D g-C 3 N 4 /Ti 3 C 2 /SnS 2 heterojunctions were successfully prepared via a simple hydrothermal route combined with electrostatic self-assembly strategy. Compared to single-component (g-C 3 N 4 , SnS 2 ) and binary composite materials (g-C 3 N 4 /SnS 2 , g-C 3 N 4 /Ti 3 C 2 ), the optimized ternary g-C 3 N 4 /Ti 3 C 2 /SnS 2 composite displayed significantly enhanced photocatalytic efficiency and higher kinetic rate constants for the elimination of Cr(VI) and tetracycline (TC). More interestingly, further improved photocatalytic performance was achieved when the composite catalyst was applied to the mixed Cr(VI)/TC pollutant system, with the reaction rate constants being 1.46-fold and 1.06-fold higher than those of single Cr(VI) and single TC systems, respectively. Finally, a Z-scheme charge migration pathway was proposed in the 2D layered g-C 3 N 4 /Ti 3 C 2 /SnS 2 heterojunction, which enabled the expedited electron transfer between g-C 3 N 4 and SnS 2 with Ti 3 C 2 as an electron mediator and boosted the charge separation efficiency. The present work provides a viable way for constructing 2D/2D/2D Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalytic materials, offering great potential for the treatment of complex pollutants in wastewater.

Zinc-ion hybrid capacitors (ZICs) can achieve high energy and power density, ultralong cycle life, and a wide operating voltage window, and they are widely used in wearable devices, portable electronics devices, and other energy storage fields. The design of advanced ZICs with high specific capacity and energy density remains a challenge. In this work, a novel kind of V, N dual-doped Ti3C2film with a three-dimensional (3D) porous structure (3D V-, N-Ti3C2) based on Zn-ion pre-intercalation can be fabricated via a simple synthetic process. The stable 3D structure and heteroatom doping provide abundant ion transport channels and numerous surface active sites. The prepared 3D V-, N-Ti3C2film can deliver unexpectedly high specific capacitance of 855 F g−1(309 mAh g−1) and demonstrates 95.26% capacitance retention after 5000 charge/discharge cycles. In addition, the energy storage mechanism of 3D V-, N-Ti3C2electrodes is the chemical adsorption of H+/Zn2+, which is confirmed by ex situ XRD and ex situ XPS. ZIC full cells with a competitive energy density (103 Wh kg−1) consist of a 3D V-, N-Ti3C2cathode and a zinc foil anode. The impressive results provide a feasible strategy for developing high-performance MXene-based energy storage devices in various energy-related fields.

A novel photocatalyst of rGO-wrapped Ti 3 C 2 /TiO 2 nanowires ((Ti 3 C 2 /TiO 2 )@rGO) was successfully synthesized to remove hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) and Rhodamine B (RhB) from wastewater. Among the prepared photocatalysts, (Ti 3 C 2 /TiO 2 )@rGO-15 showed the highest photocatalytic activity in both single and mixed pollutant solutions. The excellent photocatalytic activity was ascribed to the enhanced separation efficiency of e - and h + resulted from the Schottky barrier established in (Ti 3 C 2 /TiO 2 )@rGO. Ti 3 C 2 gathered the stimulated electrons originated from TiO 2 and further transferred them to rGO , thus enhancing the separation efficiency of e - and h + . Furthermore, different scavengers were employed to determine the reactive species involved in the photocatalytic reaction system. This work may provide a promising way to promote the separation efficiency of e - and h + via appropriate incorporation of co-catalyst.

Cobalt atoms anchored on Ti 3 C 2 -based MXene (i.e., Co-SA/MXene) have been successfully endowed with exceptional catalytic performance for the elimination of aqueous micropollutants. Herein, we firstly proposed a coupling method of etching-exfoliation-reduction to enrich titanium vacancies. The as-synthesized Co-SA/MXene exhibited a superior removal efficiency of ranitidine of 100 %, and the corresponding reaction kinetics constant (μmol/s•g) was 1.11–6643.53 times higher than the state-of-the-art for ranitidine degradation. The introduction of abundant titanium vacancies enabled a long-lasting life via an accelerated valence cycling of Co(II) and Co(III), and also effectively inhibited toxic Co 2 + leaching. DFT revealed that O II /O III dual-atoms were more suitable for PMS adsorbing while offering stronger adsorption energy, and further offered a new insight into the PMS activation mechanism for 1 O 2 selected generation. This work revealed that oxidation behavior of ranitidine and established an attractive water treatment technique for the rapid removal of aqueous micropollutants.

Photocatalytic technology is widely used to solve environmental pollution problems, while most photocatalysts have a weak response to visible light, photogenerated charges are easy to recombine, and catalytic activity is limited. Herein, we used electrostatic self-assembly to tightly load Ti 3 C 2 MXene quantum dots (MQDs) onto Bi 2 WO 6 with oxygen vacancies (BWO) to obtain BWO@MQDs composite photocatalytic materials for the degradation of tetracycline (TC). The presence of oxygen vacancies in BWO provided more active sites, facilitating the reduction of O 2 to ·O 2 - by electrons. Moreover, MQDs and BWO could form a Schottky junction at the contact interface, and then the electrons on the BWO conduction band were transferred to MQDs, reducing the photogenerated electron-hole recombination. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the TC degradation efficiency of the BWO@MQDs photocatalyst was 88.12 %, which was 1.61 times that of original Bi 2 WO 6 , and the catalytic activity was well preserved after cycle stability testing. The possible photocatalytic mechanism and photodegradation pathway were revealed by UV–vis, XPS, ESR and LC-MS, the results indicated that ·O 2 - played the most dominant role in TC degradation and the final degradation products were mainly CO 2 and H 2 O. This study has important implications in oxygen vacancies and quantum dots co-modified bismuth-based materials for photocatalysis to solve water pollution problems.

A photo-driven self-powered aptasensor was constructed based on a matching capacitor and the ZnIn2S4/Ti3C2 heterojunction as the photoanode and Cu2O as the photocathode in a dual-photoelectrode sensing matrix for multiple signal amplification for the ultrasensitive detection of microcystin-RR (MC-RR). The introduction of Ti3C2 MXene nanosheets on the photoanode surface can not only accelerate the transfer and separation of photoinduced electron/hole pairs, thus enhancing the output signal of the photo-driven self-powered system, but also provide a larger specific surface area for the immobilization of the bio-recognition unit aptamer. More importantly, for a portable and miniaturized device, a micro-workstation with the size of a universal serial bus (USB) disk and a novel short-circuit current access was proposed to capture the instantaneous output electrical signal for real-time data tracking. In such a way, a sensitivity of 2.7 mA pM−1 was achieved when the matching capacitor was integrated into the self-powered system, which was 22 times that without a capacitor. After the interaction between MC-RR and the corresponding aptamer, a ‘signal-off’ detection configuration was formed via the steric hindrance effect. Therefore, such a multiple signal amplification system realized the ultrasensitive and selective determination of MC-RR successfully. Under optimal conditions, the linear range of the self-powered aptasensor was 0.1 to 100 pM and the detection limit was 0.033 pM (S/N = 3). The aptasensor was applied to the detection of MC-RR in fish, exhibiting good reproducibility (≈3.88%), paving the way for detecting microcystins in real-life samples.

A pair of composite probes based on aptamer modified polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane-perovskite quantum dots (POSS-PQDs-Apt) as signal probe and titanium carbide (Ti 3 C 2 ) MXenes as quencher were prepared for the first time. They were employed to fabricate one turn-on–type aptasensor relying on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) for Vibrio parahaemolyticus (VP) determination. The POSS-PQDs-Apt can be adsorbed on the MXenes nanosheets, and its fluorescence was quenched due to the FRET. After the composite probes were incubated with VP for 50 min, the POSS-PQDs-Apt binding with VP can be released from the surface of MXenes, and the signal recovered due to its higher affinity to the VP than MXenes. The fluorescence intensity from 519 nm emission of the system was measured at 480 nm excitation. Under In optimized conditions, the assay can determine VP in the concentration range 10 2 - 10 6 cfu/mL, and the detection limit (LOD) was 30 cfu/mL using fluorescence detection. The LOD is still 100 cfu/mL by naked eye detection which is proper for on-line monitoring VP in aquaculture water. This method was also used to detect VP in actual samples of seawater, the recovery of spiked samples was between 93% and 106%, and relative standard deviation (RSD) was between 2.7% and 6.7%. The result is consistent with the plate count. Therefore, this assay could provide a candidate platform for screening VP in aquaculture industry. Graphical abstract

A sensitive electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) biosensor for glucose was developed based on in situ growth of TiO 2 nanowires on Ti 3 C 2 MXenes (TiO 2 –Ti 3 C 2 ) as the nanoplatform. Via tuning the alkaline oxidation time, different amount of TiO 2 nanowires can be found on MXenes. An ECL biosensor for glucose was constructed by covalent immobilization of glucose oxidase (GODx) on the glycine functional TiO 2 –Ti 3 C 2 surface, with the ECL signal depending on the in-situ formation of H 2 O 2 via the specifically catalysis of glucose by GODx, resulting in the apparent increase of ECL signal. The TiO 2 –Ti 3 C 2 can also act as the catalyst for the oxidation of H 2 O 2 into O 2 to enhance the ECL of luminol. Based on this strategy, a highly sensitive ECL biosensor for glucose was obtained in wide concentration range of 20 nM-12 mM with a low detection limit of 1.2 nM (S/N = 3). The synergistic effects of large surface area, excellent conductivity, and high catalytic activity of the TiO 2 –Ti 3 C 2 make the sensor highly sensitive toward glucose; the specific enzyme catalysis reaction promises excellent selectivity of the ECL sensor. The proposed biosensor has been employed to detect glucose in human serum, fruits, and sweat samples with excellent performance, providing a universal approach for glucose in various samples, which shows great prospect in clinical diagnostics and wearable sensors .

Microbial fuel cells have been proposed as one of the sustainable and potential technologies for treating contaminants and synchronously producing green energy. However, the poor performance of the anode is a major obstacle in the practical application of MFCs. To address this challenge, the rational design of anode materials with enhanced biocatalytic and biocompatible properties has been considered as an effective approach to improve extracellular electron transfer (EET) processes and general MFC performance . Herein, in light of the interaction between the transition metal and exoelectrogens, nickel-cobalt sulfide/Ti 3 C 2 Mxene (NiCo 2 S 4 /Mxene) is prepared by electrostatic assembly, which combined positively charged sea-urchin-like NiCo 2 S 4 with negatively charged Mxene. This not only prevents the stacking of NiCo 2 S 4 and Mxene but also accelerates the EET process by harnessing their biocompatibility and biocatalyst. As expected, the MFC with NiCo 2 S 4 /Mxene harvested higher electricity energy (9.66 ± 0.28 W/m 3 ), significantly exceeded those of plain carbon felt (CF, 1.68 ± 0.13 W/m 3 ), Mxene (4.32 ± 0.20 W/m 3 ) and NiCo 2 S 4 (5.41 ± 0.22 W/m 3 ). Moreover, the microbial community analysis further revealed that the sulfide composite attracts a higher percentage of sulfur-cycling exoelectrogens (Desulfuromonas (24.25%) and Marinobacterium (15.75%)), motivating associated metabolic pathways with more efficient electricity generation processes. Such commendable performances are mainly attributed to the synergistic effect between NiCo 2 S 4 and Mxene, which confers the bioanode with good biocompatibility and biocatalyst for biofilm adhesion and colonization, as well as providing abundant transition metals and sulfide active sites for the EET process. Our finding provides a facile routine for developing sulfide with appropriate modification as anode material for favorable performance of MFC, providing insights for sustainable and cleaner energy production in the future.

Supercapacitor , as an important energy storage device, is a critical component for next generation electric power system , due to its high power density and long cycle life. In this study, a novel electrode material with quasi-core-shell structure, consisting of negatively charged few layer Ti 3 C 2 nanosheets (FL-Ti 3 C 2 ) and positively charged polyethyleneimine as building blocks, has been prepared by using an electrostatic layer-by-layer self-assembly method, with highly conductive Ni foam to be used as the skeleton. The unique quasi-core-shell structured ultrathin Ti 3 C 2 nanosheets provide an excellent electron channel , ion transport channel and large effective contact area, thus leading to a great improvement in electrochemical performance of the material. The specific capacitance of the binder-free FL-Ti 3 C 2 @Ni foam electrodes reaches 370 F g −1 at the scan rate of 2 mV s −1 and a specific capacitance of 117 F g −1 is obtained even at the scan rate of 1000 mV s −1 in the electrolyte of Li 2 SO 4 , indicating a high rate performance. In addition, this electrode shows a long-term cyclic stability with a loss of only 13.7% after 10,000 circles. Furthermore, quantitative analysis has been conducted to ensure the relationship between the capacitive contribution and the rate performance of the as-fabricated electrode.

The conventional heterojunction formed by combining two different semiconductors is associated with issues of low compatibility, restricted intimate contact, and limited charge anti-recombination process. To address these issues, a simple strategy was adopted to fabricate a hetero-phase junction flanked with two dissimilar crystal phases of a single semiconducting material . This study employed TiB 2 as the initial material to fabricate an anatase/rutile TiO 2 hetero-phase junction material (AR-TiO 2 ), followed by its combination with highly conductive monolayer Ti 3 C 2 nanosheets to develop an AR-TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 composite photocatalyst . The photocatalyst displayed a wide range of light absorption and a remarkable capability for separating photogenerated carriers. The closely interconnected hetero-phase junction surface, formed by the rutile and anatase phases of AR-TiO 2 , combined with the incorporation of highly conductive Ti 3 C 2 nanosheets , synergistically increased the availability of multi-dimensional active sites and increased the efficacy of separating photogenerated electron pairs. The optimized AR-TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 achieved a degradation efficiency of 91.49 % for tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) within 2 h and produced 1005.81 μmol of hydrogen in 6 h. The impacts of initial pH, co-existing anions, initial TCH concentration, initial temperature, and various pollutant species on the catalytic efficiency were also investigated. pH was shown to have the greatest impact on the photocatalytic performance of AR-TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 for TCH degradation. •O 2 − , and h + were identified as the primary reactive species that enabled the photocatalytic performance of AR-TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 through trapping experiments. This study presents a novel method to synthesize hetero-phase junction photocatalysts and suggests that Ti 3 C 2 has potential prospects for use in photocatalysis .
