The Ru/WO 3 catalysts with various Ru contents (Ru weight percent-0.47 %, 0.96 %, 1.91 %, denoted as Ru/WO 3 -1, 2, 3, respectively) are prepared through NaBH 4 liquid phase chemical reduction strategy. Ru is uniformly dispersed as nanoparticles and nanoclusters on the WO 3 nanorods, and the catalytic performance of the Ru/WO 3 -3 catalysts for furfural (FF) selective hydrogenation at relatively mild conditions (reaction temperature-60 ℃, reaction time-8 h, hydrogen pressure-2.0 MPa) is investigated. It is found that the Ru/WO 3 -3 catalyst exhibits the most excellent catalytic performance, with 85.2 % conversion of FF, 97.3 % selectivity of furfuryl alcohol (FA), and highly stable. Characterization of XRD, XPS, TEM, HRTEM, H 2 -TPD, H 2 -TPR, N 2 -physical adsorption-desorption, STEM-EDX elemental line-scannig and mapping reveal that there is a synergistic effect and strong interaction between Ru and WO 3 . The ruthenium nanoclusters and nanoparticles are beneficial to the activation of H 2 , forming activated hydrogen species (H*), the interface of Ru-O-W is in favor of the adsorption and activation of C O, thus improving the selectivity of C O hydrogenation and forming FA.

The low sustainable current density in darkness restricts the advancement of photocathodic protection (PCP) for steels in marine environments. A combination of MoO 3 /WO 3 (Mo/WO 3 ) was proposed as an electron storage system to enhance capacitance and charge/discharge rates. Subsequently, incorporating ZnIn 2 S 4 (ZIS) extended light harvesting and improved photocarrier separation efficiency, resulting in efficient round-the-clock PCP performance. Under illumination, the open circuit potential (OCP) of 10Mo/WO 3 @ZIS coupled with 304SS reaches −0.97 V vs. Ag/AgCl, approximately 600 mV and 140 mV more negative than corrosion potential (E corr ) of 304SS and WO 3 @ZIS coupled 304SS, whth photocurrent density of 134 μA/cm 2 . The excellent PCP performance is attributed to superior photocarrier separation and enhanced light-harvesting capability. Notably, in the dark, the OCP of the coupled system remains ca . 0.4 V below the E corr of 304SS, with an average current density of 30 μA/cm 2 , demonstrating the regulated electron storage capabilities of Mo/WO 3 . Furthermore, capacity and charge/discharge rates correlate with Mo/W ratio and electrolyte species. 10Mo/WO 3 @ZIS exhibits a charge capacity of 2.93 mC, nearly 3 times higher than that of WO 3 @ZIS. The innovative application of MoO 3 and WO 3 proves the potential to regulate the electron storage performance, revealing the factors for photoelectron storage/release.

Tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol, a cost-effective biomass derivative, offers a sustainable path for synthesizing 1,5-pentanediol through hydrogenolysis. To develop the efficient production of 1,5-pentanediol from this alcohol, we have prepared a series of MgAl2O4-modified Pt/WOx/γ-Al2O3catalysts with varying compositions via impregnation–calcination methods. The physicochemical properties of these catalysts were subsequently characterized using diverse techniques. Characterization revealed that magnesia–alumina spinel modification enhanced Pt particle dispersion, CO adsorption on Pt/WOx/γ-Al2O3, reduced Pt particle reduction temperature, diminished the acid content in the catalysts, and increased the surface oxygen vacancy concentration. These alterations appear to influence the catalyst performance, though other factors cannot be ruled out. Catalytic activity tests demonstrated that magnesia–alumina spinel modification improved tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol hydrogenolysis activity and the 1,5-pentanediol selectivity of Pt/WOx/γ-Al2O3. Optimal performance was achieved at 12% magnesia–alumina spinel loading, with a tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol conversion of 47.3% and 1,5-pentanediol selectivity of 88.4%.

The enhancement effect of Ce modification on V 2 O 5 -WO 3 /TiO 2 catalysts at low temperatures was investigated for the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO x with NH 3 (NH 3 -SCR). By adding 9% CeO 2 to 0.5%V 2 O 5 -3%WO 3 /TiO 2 catalyst, the low-temperature denitrification performance of Ce 9 V 0.5 W 3 Ti catalyst after Ce modification was significantly improved, achieving a NO conversion above 90% within a broad temperature range of 200–350℃, with catalytic activity comparable to that of 3% V 2 O 5 -3% WO 3 /TiO 2 . The catalysts were characterized by XPS, H 2 -TPR, NH 3 , and NO-TPD. The results indicated that the Ce additive could enhance the adsorption of NO x on Ce 9 V 0.5 W 3 Ti catalyst due to the synergetic interaction among the Ce and V, W species. The interaction between V and Ce also promoted the formation of V 5+ and Ce 3+ on the surface of the catalyst, which was conducive to enhancing the adsorption and oxidation capacity of the catalyst for NO. Additionally, the introduction of Ce led to a substantial deposition of nitrate species on the surface of the catalyst, especially the increase of nitrite species, which was beneficial to the NH 3 -SCR reaction process, resulting in a significant enhancement of the catalyst’s low-temperature catalytic activity.

Over half of the solar energy comes from the infrared region, which makes electrochromic materials that modulate infrared transmittance essential for the thermal management of smart windows. However, existing electrochromic materials do not perform well in the near-infrared region, which exhibits slow response time, weak adhesion to conductive substrates, and poor long-term cycling stability. In the present work, we successfully synthesized WO 3 @ITO nanorod samples with hierarchical core–shell structure by hydrothermal and in-situ solvothermal methods. ITO-coated WO 3 nanorods and some ITO nanocrystals were firmly integrated with WO 3 nanorods, resulting in a corn-like hybrid heterogeneous structure. The unique WO 3 @ITO hierarchical core–shell structure improves the electronic properties and the adhesion to substrates, reducing the energy barrier of ion diffusion and increasing the ion flux. Enhanced electrochromic performance in NIR range with a high optical modulation of 53.3 % in 1600 nm and long-term reversibility (maintaining 91.5 % of its original contrast after 1000 cycles) was achieved. In addition, response time (t c = 3.5 s, t b = 4.6 s) and coloration efficiency (112.5 cm 2 ‧C -1 ) have been significantly improved, which is almost twice that of unmodified WO 3 nanorods (t b = 8.6 s and CE = 56.4 cm 2 ‧C -1 ), showing a good application prospect in smart windows.

Near-infrared (NIR) electrochromism are one of the most attractive candidates for solar heat regulation, photodynamic therapy, optical telecommunications, and military camouflage. However, complex preparation process, non-ohmic contact within electrochromic nanomaterials or with substrates, and inferior electrochromic performance limit the massive application of electrochromic devices (ECD). Herein, ITO nanocrystals, H 2 WO 4 ·H 2 O and WO 3 nanosheets were controllably synthesized by a facile wet chemistry method. The porous ITO@WO 3 composite films are characterized by reduced impedance, enhanced charge transport, significant NIR modulation, and excellent cycling stability. When 15 wt% ITO is introduced into WO 3 nanosheet, the composite film possesses the optimal ΔT (62 % at 1600 nm) at a low voltage of +0.3 V to −0.3 V, the bleaching time (25.4 s) is greatly improved than that of pure WO 3 film (38.1 s), and the optical modulation retains 93 % of the original values after 5000 cycles. Moreover, an impressive dual-band ECD with high optical modulation (53.4 % at 633 nm and 49.3 % at 1600 nm) and high coloration efficiencies (125.27 cm 2 C −1 at 633 nm and 204.73 cm 2 C −1 at 1600 nm) were achieved, showing a good application prospect in smart windows.

In the context of sustainable development, the utilization of semiconductor materials for the degradation of dyes, antibiotics, heavy metals, and pesticides in wastewater under visible light has emerged as a focal point of contemporary research. In this investigation, a WO3@TiO2 composite was synthesized via a solvothermal method, with the composite exhibiting a molar ratio of 5% WO3 to TiO2 precursors demonstrating optimal photocatalytic degradation performance. This material achieved complete degradation of 20 mg per L Rhodamine B (RhB) dye and tetracycline (TC) antibiotic within 30 min. Furthermore, the effects of initial pollutant concentration and solution pH on catalytic efficacy were systematically explored. The findings revealed that at RhB concentrations below 40 mg L−1, the degradation proceeded at an accelerated rate, with a rate constant exceeding 0.128 min−1. The catalyst exhibited robust performance across a broad pH range, attaining peak degradation efficiency at pH ≈ 3. The exceptional photocatalytic prowess of the WO3@TiO2 composite is predominantly attributable to its distinctive hollow microstructure, the intimate interfacial synergy between WO3 and TiO2, and the efficient separation of photogenerated electrons and holes facilitated by the type-II heterojunction architecture.

Nanosheets self-assembled WO 3 microsphere with hollow and special core–shell structures was successfully synthesized using hydrothermal, acid etching, and heat treatment methods. The special core–shell WO 3 samples with oxygen vacancies (WN-O) have higher carrier concentration and specific capacitance. The symmetrical supercapacitors (SCs) assembled by WN-O show excellent potential in PVA/KOH gel electrolyte and 3 M KOH aqueous solution. The aqueous symmetric WN-O SCs demonstrated great capacitance (22 mAh g −1 , 1 A g −1 ), extraordinary stability in cycling (118% of the retained capacity after 20 000 cycles, 5 A g −1 ), and a huge energy storage capacity (8.8 Wh Kg −1 of energy density, 400 W Kg −1 of power density). Additionally, the all solid-state symmetric WN-O SCs displayed 52.2% retained capacitance even when the current density increases five times, to 5 A g −1 , and an outstanding capacity of 18.7 mAh g −1 at 1 A g −1 . The distinct core–shell structure and plenty of oxygen vacancies of the WN-O electrode are responsible for its exceptional electrochemical performance. The oxygen vacancies and loose core–shell structure provide more active sites, while the unique cavity structure on the core–shell provides channels for charge transfer and successfully prevents collapse caused by contraction and expansion during charge and discharge processes. The mechanism discovered in this study will contribute to the design of better performing WO 3 energy storage devices in the future.

Structural design and interlayer architecture of electrochromic (EC) materials play significant role in their performance. Herein, tungsten trioxide (WO 3 ) nanoflowers have been synthesized through in situ intercalation with polyaniline (PANI), developing a 3D hierarchical structure with optimized interlayered spacing. The PANI-WO 3 composite showed superior EC stability due to improved ion storage capacity by 3D hierarchical structure with extended surface area for ion interaction. The enlarged layer spacing of PANI-WO 3 composites allows for accommodating more exchangeable Li + . The PANI-WO 3 film maintains remarkable cycling stability, retaining 80% of its initial capacity after 30000 cycles. The EC device based on PANI-WO 3 demonstrates high optical modulation (57% at 633 nm), rapid switching speeds (coloration to 23% in 15 s and bleaching to 80% in 10 s) and high coloration efficiency (168 cm 2 C −1 ). Meanwhile, the PANI-WO 3 EC supercapacitor achieves a high specific capacitance (121 mF cm −2 at 0.2 mA cm −2 ) and prolonged cyclic life (specific capacity remains at 58% and coulombic efficiency at 65% after 1500 cycles). The PANI-WO 3 serves as an effective candidate for the fabrication of high-performance EC devices (ECDs) with potential applications in energy-saving smart windows, outdoor static displays, and other energy-efficient technologies.

Listeria monocytogenes (LM), a foodborne bacterium capable of causing various diseases, emits 3-hydroxy-2-butanone (3H-2B) and dimethyl trisulfide (DMTS) in its exhaled gas, which can serve as important biomarkers for the bacterium. To date, there have been no reports on the use of dual-selective sensing for these two biomarkers to enhance the accuracy of LM detection. Therefore, we prepared a WO₃ hierarchical architecture using rapeseed pollen templates and employed defect engineering to endow the sensing material with abundant oxygen vacancies for dual-functional monitoring of 3H-2B and DMTS. The results indicate that, thanks to the synergistic effects of abundant oxygen vacancies and unsaturated W⁶⁺ Lewis acids on the surface, the WO 3-X sensor exhibits excellent dual gas sensing performance for 3H-2B and DMTS. Notably, the WO 3-X (N₂) sensor achieves maximum responses of 20.4 and 18.7 for 20 ppm 3H-2B and 20 ppm DMTS at 168 °C and 185 °C, respectively, which are higher than those of other sensors. In addition to high sensitivity, the WO 3-X (N₂) sensors exhibit high selectivity and long-term stability, implying their potential for practical LM detection. Therefore, this work provides a new perspective for the rational design and synthesis of high-performance sensing materials for precise detection of LM to ensure food safety.

Photocatalytic conversion of CO 2 into solar fuels presents a promising strategy for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. The reduction of CO 2 to methanol not only enables carbon resource recycling but also facilitates the production of sustainable fuels. In this study, a litchi-shell-like TiO 2 /WO 3 -5 hollow heterojunction catalyst was constructed, featuring surface alkalization and abundant oxygen vacancies. This unique architecture provides a high specific surface area and plentiful active sites, thereby significantly enhancing CO 2 adsorption capacity. Under neutral conditions (pH = 7), the TiO 2 /WO 3 -5 catalyst achieves a remarkable methanol production rate of 780 μmol·g⁻¹ ·h⁻¹ with a high selectivity of 88.6 %, substantially outperforming its individual counterparts, pure TiO 2 and WO 3 . Furthermore, the catalyst demonstrates excellent stability over multiple reaction cycles. A series of characterizations, including EPR, PL, TRPL, and in situ DRIFTS, collectively verify the formation of a Z-type heterojunction, which effectively promotes the spatial separation of photoinduced charge carriers and suppresses the formation of CO and CH 4 . This work underscores the crucial synergy between Z-type heterojunction engineering and surface defect manipulation in enhancing reaction selectivity and efficiency. The TiO 2 /WO 3 -5 catalyst offers a prospective platform for CO 2 -to-fuel conversion and provides valuable guidance for the design of advanced photocatalysts.

Electronic modulation of Pt sites is of great significance in catalytic reaction involved chemical engineering process. Alkali metal doping is a promising strategy to modify the d orbit of Pt, which can effectively affect the reaction between material and adsorbates, however, the relationship is still unclear. Here, we have rationally designed Pt-modified Na-doped WO 3 nanorods, and the electronic modulation of Pt can be finely modified by Na doping. The Pt-Na/WO 3 -Ar nanorods exhibit excellent H₂S sensing performance, with high response (R a /R g = 701 @ 1 ppm), low operating temperature (110 °C), and detection limit as low as 2.42 ppb. Experimental and theoretical results indicate that the introducing of Na effectively enhances the interaction between Pt nanoparticles (NPs) and WO 3 . Additionally, Na doping successfully modulate the d-band center of Pt, optimizing the adsorption and desorption processes during sensing. The synergistic effects of these components enable the Pt-Na/WO 3 -Ar sensor to exhibit outstanding H₂S sensing performance. Notably, the fabricated sensors are further used to monitor the hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) of halitosis biomarkers, which holds significant application potential in environmental protection and medical diagnostics.
