Acidity-activatable magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) nanoprobes offer great potential for in vivo cancer imaging by targeting the acidic tumor microenvironment (TME). However, their effectiveness is limited by the delayed response at tumor sites and uncontrollable background noise, compromising imaging accuracy and reliability. Herein, an acidic TME-responsive nanoprobe, SPIO@ZIF-8@Gd (SZG), with dually activatable T 1 and T 2 MR signals is shown for acidity-selective contrast enhancement in a rapid response manner. It shows decreased T 1 and T 2 contrast intensity in normal physiological conditions. Once targeting acidic TME, the zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) layer undergoes instantaneous decomposition, releasing Gd 3+ ( T 1 -weighted), and exposing the inner SPIO ( T 2 -weighted) core, thereby sequentially recovering the signals. Compared to previously reported T 1 - T 2 nanoprobes, SZG demonstrates noticeable “dual activation” after just 30 min and reaches its peak 4 h after acid incubation. Additionally, it shows an excellent “acidity correlation” between relaxation times and pH values. When the SZG nanoprobe is used combined with “dual-contrast enhanced subtraction (DESI)”, the contrast difference between diseased and normal tissue can be increased by 10 times, which is significantly higher than traditional single-mode T 1 / T 2 contrast agents. Collectively, these findings demonstrate a rapid imaging strategy of dual-activation MR imaging of the acidic TME and simultaneous background suppression, thus paving the way for precise tumor malignancy differentiation, early tumor detection, and accurate tumor grading.

A novel Zn/Co zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) has been constructed by an easy and straightforward room temperature technique. Several characterization techniques such as SEM, TEM-EDX, single-crystal XRD and ICP have been applied to confirm that the structure formed is a sodalite (SOD) cage type structure. The Zn/Co-ZIF possesses a high nano-crystallinity and porosity with a large surface area. By tuning the amount of Co and Zn in the Zn/Co zeolitic imidazolate framework, the physical and chemical properties have been improved compared with those of the single metal frameworks (ZIF-8 and ZIF-67). Consequently, the Zn/Co-ZIF was investigated for two different applications; gas adsorption (CO2, CH4 and N2) and catalysis (CO2 conversion to cyclic carbonates) and the obtained results were compared with the performance of previously reported single metal frameworks (ZIF-8 and ZIF-67). Additionally, hydrolytic stability tests under ambient conditions and immersed in water at 75 °C were performed and pointed out that Zn/Co-ZIF exhibits a higher stability. Moreover, based on these results, the Zn/Co-ZIF demonstrates better properties compared with ZIF-8 and ZIF-67.

Polymer films with tailored dielectric properties and large electrical displacement are required for applications in microelectronics due to the need for ultrahigh speed and low transmission delays. In this study, we developed a low- k polyimide (PI) nanocomposite incorporated with metal–organic framework hollow ZIF-8 (HZIF-8) nanocrystals to achieve a high energy storage capacity. The PI nanocomposite film was prepared by solution casting a mixture of HZIF-8/polyamide acid with thermal imidization. A dielectric constant of 2.26 was obtained at 100 Hz for the 5 wt% nanocomposite with a multi-stage pore architecture. Due to improved interfacial polarization, the 1 wt% nanocomposite had a high energy density of 12.2 J/cm 3 and a charge–discharge efficiency of 70% at 600 MV/m. The PI nanocomposite film exhibited dielectric reliability with inherent flexible performance, and it is expected to be a primary candidate for polymer dielectric applications in microelectronics.

Gas separation using metal organic framework (MOF) membranes has attracted considerable attention in recent years. Despite the progress made, establishing thin, defect-free MOF layers within the porous polymer remains a significant challenge. In this study, a novel approach is reported for the preparation of ZIF-8/Polyethersulfone (ZIF-8/PES) composite membranes via non-solvent-induced phase separation (NIPS)-triggered in-situ crystallization strategy. In this method, PES serves as a solid solvent for Zn(NO 3 ) 2 . During the NIPS process, an asymmetric PES membrane with a skin layer, finger-like pores, and interconnected foam structures is formed. Concurrently, Zn(NO 3 ) 2 diffuses to the skin layer and reacts with 2-methylimidazole (2-MIM), yielding a dense ZIF-8 layer on the PES surface. The simultaneous nucleation and growth of ZIF-8 within the polymer create strong interfacial interactions at the organic-inorganic interface. These interactions improve the compatibility between ZIF-8 and the polymer matrix, reduce interfacial defects. As a result, the composite membrane exhibits enhanced mechanical stability. When the crystallization time is extended to 48 h, the thickness of the ZIF-8 layer reaches approximately 540 nm, and the membrane exhibits an H 2 /CO 2 selectivity of 72.3 ± 3.35 at 298 K. This study provides a facile and effective route for constructing thin MOF membranes on polymeric matrix for high-performance gas separation.

To address the inherent drawbacks of peroxymonosulfate advanced oxidation processes (PMS-AOPs), including the low efficiency of reactive species production, short radical half-lives, and restricted pollutant degradation performance, sodium salt-assisted modification was adopted to fabricate ZIF-8-derived carbon. In this study, sodium salt-assisted modification was adopted to treat ZIF-8, and the chlorine-doped derived carbon materials HNC-Tx-Cl were prepared for peroxymonosulfate activation and tetracycline degradation in water. Compared with NC-800 fabricated by direct calcination of ZIF-8 at 800 °C, HNC-800-Cl synthesized via NaCl-assisted calcination exhibits more abundant pore structures and richer carbon defects, with a specific surface area of 1115 m2/g and a high graphitic defect ratio ID/IGof 1.20. Catalytic tests reveal that HNC-800-Cl achieves 93.39% tetracycline removal within 90 min at a catalyst dosage of 0.05 g L−1and PMS concentration of 0.1 mM. The system possesses a strong anti-interference ability toward complex water environments, maintaining a favorable degradation performance in the presence of coexisting anions, natural organic matter and actual water matrices. It also exhibits outstanding cycling stability, retaining a removal rate of 80.34% after five recycling runs. Radical quenching experiments and EPR characterization verify that superoxide radical (·O2−) is the dominant reactive species during tetracycline degradation. Both the radical and non-radical pathways are clarified to illustrate the mechanisms of PMS activation and pollutant degradation. This work provides a novel catalytic material strategy to overcome the deficiencies of conventional PMS-AOPs, and offers a new perspective for structural regulation and non-metallic doping modification of ZIF-8-derived carbon materials.

AIE featured CuNCs@ZIF-8 was constructed with blue fluorescence in aqueous solution. • The CuNCs@ZIF-8 probe detecting Hg 2+ via a turn-on response with LOD of 30 nM. • The probe enabled reliable detection of Hg 2+ in real samples. • CuNCs@ZIF-8 powder achieved the visualization of fingerprint with third level. Mercury ions (Hg 2+ ) as the most toxic heavy metal, poses serious threat to human health, environment and ecosystem. Therefore, the development of precise, convenient and portable fluorescent probe for the real-time monitoring Hg 2+ has become imperative. Here, the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) featured copper nanoclusters (CuNCs) encapsulated in a zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) (CuNCs@ZIF-8) were fabricated and exhibited bright blue emission, AIE property, excellent water solubility, and stability. The emission of CuNCs enhanced more than 6 folds after encapsulating into ZIF-8 validating the AIE feature, with quantum yield of 11.49% and lifetime of 9.67 μs. The enhancement of fluorescence can be deduced originating from the restricted intramolecular motion of CuNCs confined within the rigid ZIF-8. Notably, the CuNCs@ZIF-8 exhibited highly selective response toward Hg 2+ , and the limit of detection was determined at 30 nM. Spectroscopic investigations revealed that the fluorescence enhancement was not caused by generation of new emissive species or typical charge-transfer processes. This behavior can be attributed to the combined influence of Hg 2+ -CuNCs interactions and the confinement effect of the ZIF-8 framework, suppressed non-radiative decay and promoted AIE emissions. With the excellent selectivity and stability, the CuNCs@ZIF-8 was successfully applied for monitoring Hg 2+ in real water samples with satisfactory recoveries. The robust emission of the CuNCs@ZIF-8 enabled its utilization in visualizing latent fingerprint, providing high-resolution recognition of level 3 features. In general, this work offered a feasible strategy underscoring its great potential for multiple applications with practicality and reliability in environmental monitoring and forensic analysis. With a theoretical specific capacity of 1675 mAh·g–1 and an energy density approaching 2600 Wh·kg–1, lithium–sulfur (Li–S) battery chemistry occupies a unique position among emerging electrochemical energy storage technologies. The primary challenge faced by current (LSBs) is to enhance energy density while ensuring safety. To address these challenges, we developed a PAN@ZIF-8 composite separator by assembling zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) on electrospun polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers. This separator effectively reduces the shuttle effect of Li2Sn through a combination of ZIF-8’s pore sieving and chemical anchoring at the zinc sites. The PAN@ZIF-8 separators exhibit an initial discharge capability of 1154.84 mAh·g–1 at 0.2C and maintain excellent cycling stability after 100 cycles, with a Coulombic efficiency exceeding 98.3%. The PAN@ZIF-8 battery has good rate performance. Upon stepping the current density back down to 0.2C, the PAN@ZIF-8 cell recovered a reversible capacity of 686.54 mAh·g–1. Compared with PP and PAN separators, the attenuation rate is lower. Furthermore, the tensile strength of the PAN@ZIF-8 separator reaches 12 MPa and the breaking strain exceeds 15%. Compared with the PAN separator, the tensile strength deformation increases by 20%. Meanwhile, due to the high ignition point and good thermal conductivity of ZIF-8, the flame retardant performance of the separator has been enhanced. The PAN@ZIF-8 separator cannot be ignited under an alcohol flame with a temperature higher than 300 °C. This research offers an effective strategy to overcome the safety and cycling stability issues of Li–S batteries and paves the way for the development of high-performance key components for advanced Li–S batteries.

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) lacks effective tumor-selective strategies, particularly limiting ferroptosis-based therapies that depend on oxidative stress. Here, we develop a structurally reinforced ternary redox-cycling nanoreactor that integrates Zr 4 ⁺-stabilized zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) with redox-active Cu/Mn centers and ultrasmall Au nanodots, while co-loading paclitaxel (PTX) for acidic tumor microenvironment-responsive release. The Cu-Mn-Au interfaces enable rapid electron shuttling, sustaining multivalent metal cycling, accelerating Fenton-like reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, depleting GSH, and promoting lipid peroxidation. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further support its self-perpetuating redox mechanism. Dual surface modification with 4 T1 cell membranes and folic acid confers homotypic and receptor-mediated targeting. Mechanistic studies reveal coordinated GPX4/SLC7A11 suppression, PTX-enhanced cell-cycle arrest, and NCOA4/HO-1-mediated ferritinophagy, collectively amplifying ferroptosis. Unlike conventional metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), this Zr-reinforced trimetallic system maintains continuous redox cycling under reductive conditions. Overall, the nanoreactor achieves sustained ROS amplification, iron-homeostasis remodeling, and enhanced tumor-selective ferroptosis, offering a promising therapeutic strategy for TNBC. The efficient removal of radioactive iodine from aqueous nuclear waste is hindered by its high mobility and water solubility. Here, robust three-dimensional (3D) printed ZIF-8 monoliths were fabricated via a direct ink writing strategy and evaluated for aqueous iodine removal. A highly loaded printable ink containing up to 80 wt% ZIF-8 was formulated using carboxymethyl cellulose and kaolin, enabling the construction of mechanically stable monoliths with interconnected macroporous channels, while the intrinsic microporosity and crystallinity of ZIF-8 were well preserved. Static adsorption experiments using I 3 ‒ solutions showed a high iodine uptake capacity of 1.4 g g −1 at room temperature. Notably, the monolithic architecture significantly improved water stability and recyclability, retaining 83.8% of the initial removal efficiency after five adsorption–regeneration cycles, whereas ZIF-8 powders degraded rapidly and retained only 75.8% efficiency after two cycles. Dynamic column tests further demonstrated effective iodine removal under continuous flow conditions up to 1.5 mL min −1 . Structural analyses confirmed structural integrity after 3D printing and iodine adsorption, while elemental mapping revealed a homogeneous iodine distribution within the monolith. This work highlights 3D printing as an effective route to transform MOF powders into water-stable monolithic adsorbents for practical aqueous radioiodine remediation.

Hydrogen (H 2 ) is a key feedstock for clean energy, and efficient separation of H 2 /CO 2 is an important link. To solve classic ZIF-8 membrane difficulties, such as long preparation times and weak binding force between crystals and supports, this work used an innovative gel-assisted in-situ growing approach. Specifically, a zinc-based gel was placed onto the PSf support and thermally activated, resulting in the creation of an ultra-thin dense membrane with a thickness of about 100 nm. The effects of reaction time and 2-MIM concentration on membrane performance were thoroughly examined. The results showed that the 0.8-ZIF-8-40 membrane had the best separation performance. The resulting 0.8-ZIF-8-40 membrane exhibited an H 2 permeance of 2200 GPU and an H 2 /CO 2 selectivity of 33, surpassing the Robeson upper bound (2008). Furthermore, the membrane maintained good separation performance after 60 h of continuous operation.

Nanovoid-engineered TFC membranes fabricated via ZIF-8 sacrificial templates. • Acid etching creates maze-like wrinkled architectures with tubular nanovoids. • Optimized membrane shows 95% higher water permeance than conventional TFCs. • Maintained >97% divalent salt rejection and >99% organic dye rejection. • Controlled nanovoid engineering overcomes permeability-selectivity trade-off. Traditional thin-film composite (TFC) nanofiltration membranes face an inherent trade-off between water permeance and selectivity in water treatment applications. To overcome this challenge, this study proposes a nanostructure-mediated interfacial polymerization strategy using size-controlled zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanoparticles (30-400 nm) as sacrificial templates to construct ordered nanovoid networks. By embedding ZIF-8 nanoparticles at the polyamide (PA)-polysulfone (PSf) interface and subsequently removing them via selective acid etching, a unique maze-like wrinkled architecture with tubular nanovoids is successfully generated. Systematic investigation reveals that the optimized membrane (TFC-200A, using 200 nm templates) achieves a remarkable pure water permeance of 15.7 L m −2 h −1 ·bar −1 -a 95% enhancement over conventional TFC membranes-while maintaining excellent selectivity, specifically >92% rejection for Na 2 SO 4 and >99% rejection for dyes. The enhanced performance arises from increased surface roughness, improved hydrophilicity, and laterally interconnected interfacial nanovoids that shorten water-transport pathways while preserving steric and electrostatic selectivity. Nanovoid continuity, rather than surface corrugation alone, governs permeance, with the effective template-size window limited by nanovoid discontinuity and PA-arch collapse. This controlled nanovoid engineering provides a highly effective pathway to break the permeance-selectivity trade-off, showing great promise for advanced wastewater treatment, dye removal, and desalination applications. A CMLA-biomimetic coating on ZIF-8 enables Dectin-1-mediated macrophage-targeted quercetin delivery. • The nanoplatform exhibits pH-responsive sustained release and 6.35-fold enhanced cellular uptake in macrophages. • Qu-ZIF-8-CMLA restores LPS-induced TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 to normal levels, outperforming free quercetin. To address the limitations of quercetin (Qu), including low bioavailability, limited targeting, and insufficient synergistic enhancement, we developed a ZIF-8-based nanodelivery system (Qu-ZIF-8-CMLA) coated with a carboxymethyl laminarin (CMLA) layer. The platform was designed for macrophage-targeted delivery with potential for oral administration. Qu-ZIF-8-CMLA exhibited a hydrodynamic diameter of 151.5 nm, a drug loading capacity of 15.2%, and colloidal stability. Characterization confirmed CMLA coating of the Qu-ZIF-8 surface through electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding. The resulting nanoparticles maintained structural integrity and exhibited pH-responsive, controlled-release properties. In simulated gastric fluid, Qu-ZIF-8-CMLA released 23.54% of the Qu, whereas release reached 70.08% under simulated intestinal conditions, indicating a more sustained release profile than free Qu. Release kinetic analysis suggested a non-Fickian mechanism involving polysaccharide erosion and drug diffusion. In RAW264.7 macrophages, CMLA modification increased uptake by 6.35-fold, while competitive inhibition with free CMLA significantly attenuated this enhancement, supporting the involvement of CMLA-sensitive receptor-associated recognition in macrophage uptake. At high concentrations, Qu-ZIF-8-CMLA maintained higher RAW264.7 cell viability than Qu-ZIF-8 under the tested conditions. Anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 macrophages by measuring TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 secretion using ELISA. Qu-ZIF-8-CMLA significantly reduced three pro-inflammatory cytokines compared with the LPS model group, and no statistically significant differences were detected between the Qu-ZIF-8-CMLA and untreated control groups (p > 0.05). Qu-ZIF-8-CMLA showed significantly greater anti-inflammatory activity than free Qu and Qu-ZIF-8. Collectively, these findings provide in vitro proof of concept for CMLA-modified, macrophage-targeted Qu delivery and support further investigation of this platform for oral anti-inflammatory applications.
