In this study, the selective adsorption of aromatic compounds on mesoporous MIL-53(Al) was investigated, and followed the order: Biphenyl (Biph) > Triclosan (TCS) > Bisphenol A (BPA) > Pyrogallol (Pyro) > Catechol (Cate) > Phenol (Phen), and exhibited high selectivity toward TCS in binary compounds. In addition to hydrophobicity and hydrogen bonding, π–π interaction/stacking predominated, and more evidently with double benzene rings. TCS-containing halogens could increase π interaction on the benzene rings via forming Cl–π stacking with MIL-53(Al). Moreover, site energy distribution confirmed that complementary adsorption mainly occurred in the Phen/TCS system, as evidenced by Δ Q pri (the decreased solid-phase TCS concentration of the primary adsorbate) < Q sec (the solid-phase concentrations of the competitor (Phen)) . In contrast , competitive sorption occurred in the BPA/TCS and Biph/TCS systems within 30 min due to Δ Q pri = Q sec , followed by substitution adsorption in the BPA/TCS system, but not for the Biph/TCS system, likely attributed to the magnitude of energy gaps (E g ) and bond energy of TCS (1.80 eV, 362 kJ/mol) fallen between BPA (1.74 eV, 332 kJ/mol) and Biph (1.99 eV, 518 kJ/mol) according to the density-functional theory of Gaussian models. Biph with a more stable electronic homeostasis than TCS lead to the occurrence of substitution adsorption in the TCS/BPA system, but not in the TCS/Biph system. This study provides insight into the mechanisms of different aromatic compounds on MIL-53(Al).

Metastable intermolecular composites (MICs) composed by solid fuel and oxidizer can undergo violent redox reaction with release of huge amount of energy. Integration of MIC with microelectromechanical-system (MEMS) is of particular interest to meet the demand of miniaturization in modern pyrotechnic devices. Meanwhile, fluorine-containing oxidizers are favored in MIC owing to their potential to fluorinate the oxide passivation layer in common elemental fuels. Herein, Co(OH)F was employed for the first time as a novel fluorine-containing oxidizer in Al-based MIC. Vertically aligned Co(OH)F@Al nanobelt arrays (NAs) with tunable morphology were successfully fabricated on a variety of substrates (Si, glass, Ni, Cu, Ti) via a facile hydrothermal synthesis followed by electron beam evaporation. The whole fabrication process is highly compatible with modern MEMS technology. The thermal behavior of pure Co(OH)F and Co(OH)F@Al composites was comprehensively investigated by TG-DSC and a series of ex-situ and in-situ characterization. It was found that, Co(OH)F@Al composites achieved main exothermal reaction before melting of Al regardless of morphology and equivalence ratio. This feature is attributed to the etching of Al 2 O 3 shell by HF released from Co(OH)F which is termed as pre-ignition reaction. To elucidate the effect of micro-structure on the actual specific heat release, we proposed a phenomenological model which can be a reference for future micro-structure design of MIC.

Arsenic (As) pollutants are highly toxic and using Ca-based minerals to adsorb As 2 O 3 is effective for emission control. In this study, a fixed-bed experimental system was used to study the adsorption of As 2 O 3 by the mixture of CaO, SiO 2 , and Al 2 O 3 at 1200 °C. The amount of As adsorbed by multiple minerals was higher than that by single minerals, indicating enhanced adsorption of As 2 O 3 under the coupling effects of Ca, Si, and Al. The adsorption amount of As first increased and then decreased with an increase in the CaO:(SiO 2 +Al 2 O 3 ) and SiO 2 :Al 2 O 3 ratios. Adsorbed As was mainly enriched in Ca-Si-Al mineral, including Ca 2 Al 2 SiO 7 . Density Functional Theory calculation was conducted to study the As 2 O 3 adsorption on the Ca 2 Al 2 SiO 7 (0 0 1) surface. The analysis of Mulliken charge and density of states showed that As 2 O 3 molecules formed Al-O, O-As, and Ca-O bonds with the Al, O, and Ca sites. Si and Al in Ca 2 Al 2 SiO 7 enhanced the adsorption ability of Ca sites by promoting electron transfer . Si/Al ratio close to 1:1 is conducive to the formation of Si-O-Al structures, thus further enhancing the adsorption. The results can help optimize coal blending strategies and modify adsorbents to further reduce As emissions during coal combustion .

Functionally graded materials (FGMs) are promising protective structures for lightweight armor plates because of their features and designability. However, traditional discretely layered FGMs with macroscopic interfaces can generate unfavorable interlaminar stresses under ballistic attacks, eventually leading to delamination or interlayer tearing. Herein, we constructed new B 4 C/2024Al FGMs without sharp interfaces between layers. The FGM armor systems with varying through-the-thickness distributions were tested against 7.62 mm armor-piercing incendiary projectiles. The effects of compositional gradient exponent on the damage characteristics, stress distribution and energy evolution were numerically and experimentally investigated. The results indicated that the smooth transition within through-the-thickness microstructures effectively avoided the occurrence of interlayer delamination or tearing. The compositional gradient exponent played an essential role in the impact response of the FGM targets. The FGM having a linear composition gradient outperformed other nonlinear types with respect to energy absorption and ballistic properties due to the reduced tensile wave strength and prolonged projectile-target interaction time. Furthermore, the structural optimization problem with the objective of maximizing ballistic efficiency was solved using the conjugate gradient method, and the optimal design of the FGM targets was achieved. The current research provides a promising design guideline for developing and optimizing new advanced lightweight composite armor.

Elastomeric composites are an important class of thermal interface materials as they are shape-adaptive, which can fit uneven interfaces and achieve ideal interfacial heat transfer in electronic cooling. There is often a trade-off between mechanical and thermal performances in highly filled composites. Here, the surface chemistry of Al powders via introducing dodecyltrimethoxysilane (DTS) upon different grafting densities is precisely controlled. The results show that the DTS grafting density of 0.24 molecule nm −2 endows the composites with optimized mechanical properties. The tensile stress, elongation at break, and Young's modulus are enhanced by 180%, 56%, and 94.4% after DTS grafting, respectively. Meanwhile, the composite possesses a high fracture energy of 356.2 J m −2 with an enhanced strain energy density of 37.6 kPa. The DTS grafting on Al also contributes to higher thermal conductivity (4.4 W mK −1 ) and lower contact thermal resistance (0.52 °C cm 2 W −1 ) of the composites and significantly improves the stability of the composites upon high-temperature storage. Guidance is provided here on methods and data references for optimizing the performance of elastomeric composites, which helps to expand their practical application in electronic cooling.

Al-doped-SiOC ceramics were fabricated via condensation polymerization and then pyrolysis of preceramic precursor in this study. The Al cation induced the formation of mullite, SiO 2 and graphitic carbon. Results showed that the incorporation of Al element enhanced the thermal stability of SiOC ceramics under Ar atmosphere via suppressing carbothermal reduction. This was consistent with the observation from Raman spectra by curve-fitting according to the D-to-G peak intensity ratio. In addition, the thermal stability of the SiAlOC ceramics under air atmosphere was also investigated. The formation of the mullite phase under the air atmosphere indicated that the SiAlOC ceramics possessed better oxidation resistance properties than the pure SiOC ceramics. This work provides a new guide to fabricating metal-modified SiOC ceramics with desired structures. Graphical Abstract
The introducing Al element greatly enhanced the thermal stability of SiOC ceramics via restraining in-situ formation of SiC. The structural evolutions of Al cation-modified-SiOC ceramics both in argon and air atmospheres were investigated systematically.

Phosphorus widely existing in rainfall and wastewater impacts the water environment. In this study, sludge, cement block, and coal fly ash were employed as ceramsite material to synthesize Al-doped waste ceramsite (Al-ceramsite) for removing phosphate (PO43−-P) from aqueous solutions. Batch static adsorption–desorption experiments were designed to investigate the effect of various parameters such as Al-ceramsite dosage, PO43−-P concentration, temperature, initial pH, coexisting ions, and desorbents on the removal of PO43−-P. Also, the fate of PO43−-P removal efficiency in actual rainwater was studied through dynamic adsorption column experiments using Al-ceramsite. Results showed that Al-ceramsite could remove PO43−-P efficiently under the optimum parameters as follows: Al-ceramsite dosage of 40 g/L, initial PO43−-P concentration of 10 mg/L, temperature of 25 °C, and pH of 5. Besides that, the Al-ceramsite could completely remove PO43−-P in actual rainwater, and the effluent PO43−-P concentration was lower than the environmental quality standards for surface water Class Ⅰ (0.02 mg/L). The adsorption characteristics of Al-ceramsite on PO43−-P by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were further explained. As a result, ligand exchange and complexation were confirmed as the main PO43−-P removal mechanism of Al-ceramsite. Thus, Al-ceramsite was prepared from industrial waste and has shown excellent potential for phosphorus removal in practical applications. Keywords:phosphate;ceramsite;adsorption;desorption;column experiment

In this study, nano-Al/Fe 2 O 3 bilayer was successfully formed via aqueous electrophoretic deposition (EPD) route for the first time. For this formation, the first layer of nano-Fe 2 O 3 was prepared by EPD using the bi-additive of 0.015 mM HCl+10 mg L −1 PEI, and then the second layer of nano-Al was immediately prepared by EPD using 5 mg L −1 PEI as additive. The electrophoretic nano-Al/Fe 2 O 3 bilayer had high heat release of ∼2800 J g −1 and exhibited good combustion performance. In comparison with the previous work realized by using organic-solvent-EPD, we believe this study can pave a new way for preparing the bilayers of nanothermites or metallic reactive materials by more cost-effective and environment-friendly aqueous EPD route.

Al-rich alloys prepared by milling and melting were characterized by a range of instrumental analysis techniques and employed for hydrolytic hydrogen production. The hydrolysis reaction of each Al-rich alloy with water was measured. The hydrolysis properties of Al-rich alloys prepared by milling method were superior to those prepared by melting method with same composition. In particular, the Al-5wt%Ga-3wt%In-5wt%Sn alloy prepared by milling featured better hydrolysis properties than that obtained by melting, achieving a hydrogen yield of 1146.0 mL g −1 and a maximum hydrogen generation rate of 840.0 mL min −1 g −1 in tap water within 10 min at 25 °C and atmospheric pressure. Moreover, the phase compositions, chemical states, elemental distributions, and thermal behaviors of melting and milling samples were investigated, and the activation mechanism was discussed as well.

In this study, to improve the safety in the preparation process of energetic materials, vacuum freeze-drying technology is applied to develop nanoenergetic thin films in which Al nanoparticles (Al NPs) are used as the fuel and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) powders act as the oxidant. The whole process effectively avoids high temperature and thus ensures operational safety. The morphology and composition characterizations confirm that Al NPs are dispersed uniformly in the hydrophobic energetic binder, endowing the films with increased water-proof, anti-aging and anti-corrosion characteristics. The results of thermal analysis show that a pre-ignition reaction (PIR) destroys the Al2O3 shell and a sharp exothermic peak from the reaction between the exposed Al core and PVDF is found before the melting point of Al. Combustion tests reveal that the film with the highest content of Al NPs possesses the fastest flame propagation speed. The preliminary reaction mechanism obtained by probing the reaction products and intermediates suggests that a two-step reaction exists when the film is slowly heated in N2, while a competitive reaction between oxidation and fluorination of Al NPs is observed when the film burns in air. These results indicate the promising potential of vacuum freeze-drying technology in manufacturing nanoenergetic materials.

Lu-Al-Si-O-N tapes with different thickness were used to join gas pressure sintered Si 3 N 4 ceramics. The microstructure of the joints and the influences of the joint thickness and joining temperature on the bonding strength of the as-joined Si 3 N 4 ceramics have been investigated. The highest bonding strength about ~ 300 MPa of the joined specimens was achieved by using 450 µm interlayer at 1450 °C. The existence of Si 3 N 4 nanowires was beneficial for the improvement of the bonding strength by interweaving the oxynitride glass matrix in the joint region.

Modulation of burning rates and inhibition of aluminum agglomeration in solid propellants have generated considerable research interest in the field of energetic materials. In this paper, integrated Al/oxidizer composites have been prepared by a spray-drying technique, which offer intimate contact between the fuel and oxidizers . The morphologies, thermal stability, density, heats of explosion and combustion performance of the resulted solid propellants containing these Al-based composites were systematically investigated, where the condensed combustion products (CCPs) analysis and the agglomeration behavior of Al particles have been focused. After well control of the Al/oxidizers structure, 9 % higher explosion heat, 58 % higher pressurization rate and 65 % stronger flame radiation intensity were achieved in comparison to the conventional solid propellants with the same formulation. The burn rate of the propellants can also be well controlled by using different type of Al/oxidizers composites, in the range of 3.6–5.9 mm s −1 under 0.5 MPa and 9.2–10.9 mm s −1 under 15 MPa. More importantly, very low burn rate pressure exponent of 0.1 within 0.5–15 MPa was obtained. Inspired by decreasing size of CCPs, the evolution of Al on the burning surface was studied and the agglomeration inhibition was observed, whose potential mechanism was then proposed and elucidated.
