A long-lasting TIF-4 MOF glass membrane for selective CO2 separation

Huanni Xia,Hua Jin,Yating Zhang,Hao Song,Jianqiao Hu,Yun Huang,Yanshuo Li

Membrane technology with environmentally friendly and cost-efficient features has been well acknowledged as a promising solution for effective CO 2 separation. Metal organic framework (MOF) glasses are one of the most attractive membrane materials currently, because of their easy processability, absence of grain-boundary defects, and permanent porosity. In this study, a mixed linker tetrahedral imidazolate framework-4 (TIF-4) MOF with ultrahigh glass forming ability was selected for fabricating highly CO 2 selective membranes. Through adjusting the molar ratio of the imidazole (Im) and 5-methylbenzimidazolate (5-mbIm) linkers in the TIF-4 framework, the melting temperatures as well as the CO 2 adsorption property could be controlled systematically. After vitrification, TIF-4 glasses (a g TIF-4) with varying 5-mbIm content were prepared, and all of them exhibit higher isosteric heat of CO 2 adsorption than the corresponding TIF-4 crystals. Both CO 2 /CH 4 and CO 2 /N 2 uptake ratio (298 K, 1 bar) of a g TIF-4 samples are more than twice as that of TIF-4 crystals, suggesting the great potential of a g TIF-4 for CO 2 separation. Further, a g TIF-4 membranes were successfully prepared by the melt-quenching process from the polycrystalline membranes. a g TIF-4 membranes are highly CO 2 selective with CO 2 /N 2 and CO 2 /CH 4 separation factors of 27 and 30. More importantly, a g TIF-4 membrane displays long-term stability up to 10 months, which is highly conductive to its industrial application for CO 2 separation.

Passivating defects via 4-cyanobenzenaminium iodide enables 22.44% efficiency perovskite solar cells

Lusheng Liang,Qiu Xiong,Zilong Zhang,Yaming Yu,Peng Gao

Defects can easily form at the surfaces and grain boundaries of solution-processed organic-inorganic halide perovskites films, leading to undesired non-radiative recombination and ion migration in the device. Consequently, this limits the performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, a new organic ammonium halide salt with cyano (-CN) functional group, 4-cyanobenzenaminium iodide (CNBAI), was developed to passivate the defects in the bulk of perovskite films. It was found that the CNBAI can improve the film morphology of the perovskite layer and passivate the various types of defects in the perovskite. On the one hand, the -CN group could bind with the under-coordinated Pb 2+ and form intermolecular halogen bonds with the iodide atom in perovskite, as illustrated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy measurements. On the other hand, CNBAI could fill the iodide vacancy with its own iodide ions. For the first time, we demonstrate experimentally that the -CN group can simultaneously interact with Pb 2+ and form CN … I halogen bond in the perovskite. In addition, the introduced CNBAI improved energy alignment between the perovskite and adjacent charge transport layers. Finally, the PSCs fabricated with CNBAI-based perovskite films achieved the best PCE of 22.4% with negligible hysteresis and displayed good long-term stability.

Sulforaphane Upregulates Cultured Mouse Astrocytic Aquaporin-4 Expression through p38 MAPK Pathway

Canhong Yang,Sisi Qin,Jiafa Zhang,Yuanyuan Wang,Huan Li,Tianming Lü

Protein misfolding and/or aggregation are common pathological features associated with a number of neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Parkinson disease (PD). Abnormal protein aggregation may be caused by misfolding of the protein and/or dysfunction of the protein clearance system. Recent studies have demonstrated that the specific water channel protein, aquaporin-4 (AQP4), plays a role in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases involving protein clearance system. In this study, we aimed to investigate the role of sulforaphane (SFN) in the upregulation of AQP4 expression, along with its underlying mechanism using cultured mouse astrocytes as a model system. At low concentrations, SFN was found to increase cell proliferation and result in the activation of astrocytes. However, high SFN concentrations were found to suppress cell proliferation of astrocytes. In addition, our study found that a 1 μM concentration of SFN resulted in the upregulation of AQP4 expression and p38 MAPK phosphorylation in cultured mouse astrocytes. Moreover, we demonstrated that the upregulation of AQP4 expression was significantly attenuated when cells were pretreated with SB203580, a p38 MAPK inhibitor. In conclusion, our findings from this study revealed that SFN exerts hormesis effect on cultured mouse astrocytes and can upregulate astrocytic AQP4 expression by targeting the p38 MAPK pathway.

4-Aminothiophenol-Modulated Ag Growth on Au Nanoparticles for Detection of Nitrite

Jiaqi Chen,Ting Zhong,Xi Lu,Feng Zhao,Pan Wang,Xue Yu,Yuxin Yang,Fengyun Sun,Xiaochun Wu,Wei Feng

Nitrite (NO2–) in water and food is a potential threat to human health. The determination of nitrite content is very significant for people’s life safety. Here, 4-aminothiophenol (4-ATP)-modulated silver growth on gold nanospheres (GNSs) was designed to detect nitrite. It was verified that the exposed amino groups of 4-ATP molecules on GNSs can accelerate Ag overgrowth. On the contrary, the deamination reaction of 4-ATP with nitrite can reduce the Ag overgrowth rates. 4-ATP modified on GNSs can not only increase the spectrophotometry response of nitrite with a low limit of detection (LOD = 36 nM) but also obtain a wide and flexible detection range (0–60 μM). In addition, this method showed good selectivity to nitrite. The excellent optical response, the sharp contrast between the acceleration and deceleration of Ag growth, and the customizable basic setting of the sensing ligands can provide a universal design scheme for high-performance detection methods.

Integrating Mo2Bx (x = 1, 4) with CdS for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production

Xiangyu Meng,Junyi Yang,Shiming Xu,Chenchen Zhang,Baochun Ma,Yong Ding

Molybdenum based compounds, such as MoC x , MoSe 2 , MoS 2 MoP x , MoO x and their derivatives, have been considered as the alternative catalysts for platinum (Pt) whether in electrocatalytic or photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). This means molybdenum based compounds have great application potential in solving the energy crisis and environmental pollution. Herein, for the first time, the unexplored Mo 2 B x (x = 1 or 4) were investigated as the active components in a visible-light driven photocatalytic hydrogen production system. Experimental results demonstrate that they both exhibit excellent hydrogen evolution activities when combined with CdS or organic photosensitizers. Additionally, for the same kind of light-harvesting material, the photocatalytic HER activity of Mo 2 B 4 is obviously better than that of Mo 2 B. This clearly indicates the photocatalytic activities of them are affected by the content of electron deficient atom boron (B) in Mo 2 B x samples and exhibits a strong B dependence in photocatalytic HER. The reason for this B dependency is studied in detail by photo/electrochemical methods and optical characterizations in this work, where it is essentially caused by the difference in the electron transfer (ET) rates between light-harvesting material and Mo 2 B x samples and just manifested as B dependency. Additionally, the relation between photocatalysis and electrocatalysis in HER is discussed.

Janus coordination polymer derived PdO/ZnO nanoribbons for efficient 4-nitrophenol reduction

Mufei Liu,Fang Cui,Qinghai Ma,Linxu Xu,Jiajia Zhang,Ruliang Zhang,Tieyu Cui

We designed a facile and green self-assembly route for the large-scale production of bimetallic coordination polymer–Zn(MAA)2/Pd(II) nanoribbons by employing two terminal units with distinct hard–soft properties of the smallest semi-rigid methacrylate anion (MAA−) to combine with two different metal ions. The COO− (chemically hard base) served as the initial unit, which was applied to coordinate with the Zn2+ ions for constructing the host network of this Janus CPs by facilely adjusting the proportion of ethanol/water to control the degree of solvation. After soaking in an ethanol solution of PdCl2, the alkene units (chemically soft base) act as secondary donors to load the soft noble metal Pd2+ ions and form Zn(MAA)2/Pd(II) nanoribbons, which are ideal precursors of ZnO/PdO nanoribbons. By pyrolyzing the dual metal ion equipped Zn(MAA)2/Pd(II) precursors, ZnO nanoribbon supported PdO nanoparticles (NPs) with a well-defined structure were facilely fabricated on a large scale. Furthermore, the as-obtained ZnO/PdO nanoribbons exhibit efficient catalytic performance for the reduction of 4-NP, which can convert 99.3% of the substrates within 6 min. This superior catalytic performance may be attributed to the well-dispersed PdO nanoparticles as well as the absence of additional agents introduced a green synthetic method.

Unique Electrochemiluminescence Behavior of 4-Chromanone and Chromone and their Sensing Application

Xia Qiu,Xiang Qing,Wang Sufan,Yinggui Zhu

4-Chromanone and chromone, these two structurally similar pharmaceutical intermediates play a vital role in drug synthesis, but their related electrochemical properties have not been reported. In this work, we have found that 4-chromanone and chromone can generate strong electrochemiluminescence (ECL) during their reduction by using K2S2O8 as co-reactant in H3BO3-Na2B4O7 buffer solution. The ECL reaction mechanism has been investigated carefully by studying their fluorescence (FL) spectrum, ECL spectrum, and the important role of co-reactants in the system. Moreover, it has been found that iodide ion (I−) can inhibit the ECL signal of 4-chromanone and the ECL decrease degree is related to the amount of added I−. Therefore, a new ECL method for the detection of iodide ion has been established with high sensitivity, good selectivity and wide linear range, which can be used for detecting I− in real samples.

Hui Lu,Xia Zhou,Lei Wang,Linhong Jin

A series of newN-phenylacetamide derivatives containing 4-arylthiazole moieties was designed and synthesized by introducing the thiazole moiety into the amide scaffold. The structures of the target compounds were confirmed by1H-NMR,13C-NMR and HRMS. Their in vitro antibacterial activities were evaluated against three kinds of bacteria—Xanthomonas oryzaepv.Oryzae(Xoo),Xanthomonas axonopodispv.Citri(Xac) andX.oryzaepv. oryzicola(Xoc)—showing promising results. The minimum 50% effective concentration (EC50) value ofN-(4-((4-(4-fluoro-phenyl)thiazol-2-yl)amino)phenyl)acetamide (A1) is 156.7 µM, which is superior to bismerthiazol (230.5 µM) and thiodiazole copper (545.2 µM). A scanning electron microscopy (SEM) investigation has confirmed that compoundA1could cause cell membrane rupture ofXoo. In addition, the nematicidal activity of the compounds againstMeloidogyne incognita(M. incognita) was also tested, and compoundA23displayed excellent nematicidal activity, with mortality of 100% and 53.2% at 500 μg/mL and 100 μg/mL after 24 h of treatment, respectively. The preliminary structure-activity relationship (SAR) studies of these compounds are also briefly described. These results demonstrated that phenylacetamide derivatives may be considered as potential leads in the design of antibacterial agents. Keywords:synthesis;thiazole;nematicidal activity;antibacterial activity;structure-activity relationship

Solid-liquid equilibrium and dissolution thermodynamics of 4-Methylumbelliferon in different solvents

Jinbo Ouyang,Jian Chen,Haiqing Huang,Limin Zhou,Xin Huang

Solubility of 4-Methylumbelliferon in different pure solvents, including polar and apolar solvents, were firstly measured at varied temperatures under 0.1 MPa by a gravimetric method. Results showed that solubility in all solvents increase with rising of temperature, and 4-Methylumbelliferon is most soluble in acetone, followed by 1-butanol, isopropanol, 1-propanol, isobutanol , ethyl acetate , ethanol, methanol, methyl acetate , acetonitrile , butyl acetate and water. The experimental solubility data were correlated by several thermodynamic models, including modified Apelblat model, NRTL model and Wilson model. The accuracy of these models is determined by calculation of mean relative deviation ( MRD ). Moreover, dissolution thermodynamics i.e. dissolution enthalpy, dissolution Gibbs energy and dissolution entropy, were calculated by using Wilson equations.

4-Mercaptobenzoic acid-anchored ultrafine Ag nanoparticles for efficient CO2 electrochemical reduction

Gaosheng Ren,Zhihui Su,Yu Tang,Weichen Du,Nan Xu,Chengyi Dai,Xiaoxun Ma

It is very important to design model catalysts to control the site distribution and develop methods to improve their electronic environment and thus promote the catalyst’s performance in the electrochemical reduction of CO 2 (CO 2 RR). In this work, a strategy of in-situ synthesis and anchoring of nanoparticles (SSAN) was developed. Using this strategy, a “jujube-cake” type catalyst was designed, referred to as Ag@4-MBA. In this catalyst, Ag nanoparticles (NPs) act as “jujube”, which are embedded in 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) acting as “cake”. A Pointer-shaped Ag@4-MBA material was prepared that achieved high loading of Ag species (∼24.0 wt%), high dispersion (5–10 nm), high CO mass activity (93.7 A g Ag −1 ), high CO faradaic efficiency (94.0%) and high CO production (2.0 mol g Ag −1  h −1 ), showing a superior performance to that of the recently reported Ag-based catalysts. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterization showed that a high degree of electron delocalization of the Ag–S–aromatic ring and reconstructing the electronic environment of the metal sites were achievied, it is beneficial to stabilize the reaction intermediate COOH*. This work provides a new approach for the design of metal nanoparticle model catalysts with more sustainable CO 2 RR.

Concave gold nano-arrows (AuCNAs) for efficient catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol

Ang Ma,Weiye Yang,Kunpeng Gao,Junqi Tang

Anisotropic gold nanostructures have attracted great attention in different fields including catalysis. Thermodynamically driven selective surface growth offers a reliable and reproducible method for anisotropic gold nanoparticle synthesis with specific morphologies. Herein, monocrystalline concave gold nano-arrows (AuCNAs) are prepared by the over-growth method using Au nanorods (AuNRs) as seeds. The as-prepared AuCNAs consist of a biconical head and four concave structures. Interestingly, silver ions (Ag + ) concentration significantly affects the product morphology by tuning the peak positions of surface plasmon resonance (SPR), aspect ratio, arrow, and concave morphology of AuCNAs. The position of longitudinal SPR peaks is observed at 810, 805 and 782 nm at [Ag + ]/[Au 3+ ] molar ratios of 1:2, 1:1, and 2:1, respectively. Diameters and lengths of AuCNAs varied from 25 nm to 36 nm; 104 nm, 78 nm, and 120 nm, respectively. Additionally, the AuCNAs are applied for the catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) to 4-aminophenol (4-AP) in presence of excess NaBH 4 . Compared to gold nanorods (AuNRs), the prepared AuCNAs catalyst shows excellent catalytic activity , demonstrating that concave structures and sharp corners significantly enhance the catalytic activity. The value of pseudo-first-order reaction kinetic constants (k app ) increased from 0.0051 to 0.0195 s −1 with increasing catalyst valume from 7.5 to 37.5 μL. The highest normalized reaction rate constant (K nor ) and turnover frequency (TOF) reach 5.84 × 10 4  min −1  mmol −1 and 443.47 h −1 , respectively, at [Ag + ]/[Au 3+ ] ratio of 1:1 in AuCNAs catalyst. This study expands catalytic applications of anisotropic gold nanostructures and widens their potential application areas, such as surface plasmon exciton photonics , biomedical photonics, and photocatalysis .

Combustion performance and mechanism of DAP-4/Al composites with WO3 nanoparticles

Jin-Qiang Zhou,Yi-Ming Wang,Hua Fang,Peng Deng,Jian-Xin Nie,Xue-Yong Guo,Rui Liu

The design and preparation of new high-energy composite DAP-4/Al is very important for the study of composite solid propellants. In this work, the combustion properties and reaction mechanism of DAP-4/Al composites doped with WO3 nanoparticles were studied. DAP-4/Al composites were prepared by different mass ratios. The combustion state, combustion time, pressure, pressurization rate and flame temperature of DAP-4/Al/WO3 with different mass ratios were monitored. The results show that the combustion performance of DAP-4/Al can be significantly improved under the catalysis of WO3. Compared with DAP-4/Al-5, the average combustion time of DAP-4/Al/W-4 is significantly reduced by ~ 70 ms, the average combustion pressure is increased by 654 KPa, and the average pressurization rate is increased by 0.22 MPa·s−1. Under the catalysis of WO3, the activated substances can react rapidly with H2dabco2+ and NH+ to produce CO2, CO, N2 and H2O. When the mass ratio is 20:80:2, the average maximum combustion heat of DAP-4/Al/W-4 is 8474 J/g, which is higher than 493 J/g of DAP-4/Al-5. The reaction mechanism of WO3 catalyzed DAP-4/Al system was further analyzed by TG-MS and XPS. This work provides a new idea for the future application of DAP-4/Al composites in solid propellants.
