Graphical Silver surfer : Polymer-supported bimetallic nanocomposites (PS-Ag@AuAg) were synthesized by using a seed-growth process. The LSPR of these composites could be tailored over a large scale. The catalytic activity of the nanocomposites was remarkably superior to that of the supported monometallic nanocomposites. Supported noble bimetallic nanomaterials have attracted great interest owing to their applications in catalysis. Herein, polystyrene-supported Ag@AgAu bimetallic nanocomposites were synthesized by using a seed-growth route. The size and degree of coverage of the Ag@AgAu NPs could be controlled by changing the experimental parameters. SEM, TEM, STEM, EDS, and XPS analysis was used to characterize the morphology, structure, and composition of these nanocomposites. We found that the bimetallic nanoparticles on the polystyrene beads had a core–shell structure that was comprised of a Ag core and a AgAu alloy shell. The optical properties of the nanocomposites were also studied by UV/Vis/NIR spectroscopy, which indicated that the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) absorptions of the nanocomposites could be tailored over a large scale from 450 nm to 950 nm. The catalytic properties of the nanocomposites were studied by using the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) by NaBH 4 as a model system. The results showed that the catalytic activity of the polystyrene-supported Ag@AgAu bimetallic nanocomposites was remarkably superior to that of polystyrene-supported monometallic Ag and Au nanocomposites with the same nanoparticle size. In addition, an investigation of the recycling catalytic activity of the PS-Ag@AgAu nanocomposites revealed that the catalyst possessed good stability. The enhancement of the catalytic activity was proposed to be due to the ligand and strain effects between Ag and Au.

Enterococcus faecalis ( E. faecalis ) is one of the dominant bacteria in infected root canals, and it is tolerant to commonly used root canal disinfectants. Ag + has a certain antibacterial effect on E. faecalis , but the instability and potential toxicity of Ag + limit its application. Metal azolate framework-7 (MAF-7) is a typical metal–organic framework that has been used for drug delivery due to its high encapsulation efficiency, tunable release profile, and low cytotoxicity. In this study, we used a simple method for the synthesis of Ag + /MAF-7 nanocomposites. After characterization via several techniques, the antibacterial activity of this nanocomposite against E. faecalis was investigated. Ag + was found to be uniformly bound to MAF-7, and the resulting Ag + /MAF-7 nanocomposite showed significant antibacterial activity against E. faecalis . This study demonstrates the potential application of nanocomposite antibacterial materials in treating infected root canals.

Ag nanoparticle (NP)-decorated MIL-125(Ti) microspheres (Ag@MIL-125(Ti)) were firstly fabricated via a facile hydrothermal and following photo-reduction method. The photocatalysts were characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopies, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and UV–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The characterization results indicated that Ag NPs were dispersed on the surface of MIL-125(Ti) microspheres, and the Ag NPs had a uniform diameter of about 40 nm. The composites exhibited excellent visible-light absorption, due to the modification with the Ag NPs. The photocatalytic activity for the visible-light-promoted degradation of Rhodamine B was improved through the optimization of the amount of Ag loaded as a co-catalyst, this amount being determined as 3 wt%. Additionally, studies performed using radical scavengers indicated that O 2 − and e − served as the main reactive species. The catalyst can be reused at least five times without significant loss of its catalytic activity. Furthermore, a photocatalytic mechanism for degradation of organics over Ag@MIL-125(Ti) is also proposed. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

In this paper, a facile, economical and environmentally friendly synthetic method was developed to fabricate a Ag nanoparticle (NP) decorated graphene (GR/TA/Ag) composite with tannic acid (TA) as a reducing agent and stabilizing agent. The GR/TA/Ag composite was fully characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy (UV-vis), Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) demonstrated that Ag NPs with diameters of up to 6 nm were homogeneously and uniformly deposited on graphene sheets. With an increasing concentration of AgNO3 used for immersion, the amount of Ag NPs loaded kept increasing without aggregation or deformation. The antibacterial properties of the GR/TA/Ag composite were studied using Gram-negative E. coli ATCC 25922 and Gram-positive S. aureus ATCC 6538 via both the disk diffusion method and the shaking flask method. The disk diffusion method results showed that the synthesized GR/TA/Ag composite had great release antibacterial properties owing to the loading of Ag NPs. In addition, the presence of TA gave the composite good non-release antibacterial properties, based on the results of the shaking flask method. The ingenious combination of the release-killing capabilities of Ag NPs and the contact-killing capabilities of TA bestow two-level antibacterial activity on the GR/TA/Ag composite, promoting the GR/TA/Ag composite as part of a new generation of powerful antibacterial agents with promising applications.

The hyperbranched waterborne polyurethane (HWPU)/Ag nanocomposites were prepared by incorporation of silver sol into the HWPU. Formation of Ag nanoparticles in different generation hyperbranched polyesters was confirmed by UV–vis spectra, particle size distribution, and transmission electron microscope. The structures and properties of HWPU and its nanocomposites were measured with X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and thermogravimetric analysis, etc. SEM images revealed that the Ag nanoparticles were well dispersed in the HWPU matrix with an increasing of generation number. The DMA analysis results showed that the HWPU/Ag nanocomposites had higher glass transition temperature and dynamic storage modulus than that of pure HWPU, especially incorporation of Ag nanoparticles protected by the third generation polyester. Incorporation of Ag nanoparticles into HWPU not only increased the mechanical properties but also enhanced thermal properties. Furthermore, the Young's modulus, tensile strength, and the initial decomposition temperature of HWPU/Ag nanocomposites are increased with increase in generation number. POLYM. In this work, we reported the growth of cadmium-free Ag-doped Zn–In–S nanocrystals (NCs) with effective photoluminescence (PL) via a hot-injection strategy. The effects of the nucleation temperatures, reaction times, and Ag-doping concentrations on the PL properties of Ag-doped Zn–In–S NCs were investigated systematically. The as-synthesized NCs exhibit color-tunable PL emissions covering a broad visible range of 472–585 nm. After being passivated by a protective ZnS shell, the PL quantum yield (QY) of the resultant NCs was greatly improved up to 33%. With the increase of the Ag-doping level, the PL is significantly intensified due to the improved concentration of Ag ions which provides more holes to recombine with electrons from the bottom of the conduction band. This also makes the emission via the dopant energy level become a powerful, competitive advantage for the NCs with higher Ag-doping levels, resulting in a longer lifetime and higher PL QY. These results suggest that tailoring the Ag-doping level can be a powerful strategy to control the optical properties of Ag-doped Zn–In–S NCs.

One-dimension noble nanomaterials have promising applications in many fields, and their growth pattern control is significant to property modulation. Herein, we report a facile strategy with which the growth pattern of Ag on the Au nanorod (NR) or decahedral nanoparticle (NP) surface can be precisely controlled and various structured Ag/Au NRs can be synthesized. Achievement of growth pattern control is mainly attributed to the adjustable reaction kinetics of Ag– to Ag0. Slow and moderate reaction rate favor asymmetrical growth, producing Au-tipped Ag NRs and asymmetrical Ag–Au–Ag NRs, respectively. In the case of a fast reaction rate, symmetrical growth dominates and symmetrical Ag–Au–Ag NRs form. Furthermore, the prepared bimetallic NRs can be used as starting materials to generate other novel nanostructures (nanocups, nanonails, and longer Au-tipped Ag NRs). The result presented here is vital to both exploration of growth theory and constructing nanostructures of not only the Au/Ag bimetallic system but also possibly other noble bimetallic systems. Moreover, these prepared nanostructures could provide model materials for studying the physical properties (such as structure-dependent surface plasmon) or have potential applications in the medical field. For example, hollow nanocups can serve as containers for controlled release of drug, etc.

Porous CuO–Ag nanofibers have been synthesized via a combination of the electrospinning technique and the PVP-assisted sol–gel technique in the absence of any templates. The thermal behavior of the as-spun fibers was characterized by TG-DSC while FT-IR was employed to prove the removal of the polymer, which resulted in a porous structure. The structure and morphology of the resultant products were characterized by XRD, TEM and SEM. Porous CuO–Ag nanofibers fabricated on a Si substrate exhibited large Raman enhancement ability, which was also investigated. The SERS signals on the obtained substrate had perfect temporal stability under continuous laser radiation and a good uniform response, enabling quantitative detection of analyte azobenzene. The log–log plot of the SERS intensity to the azobenzene concentration exhibited a good linear relationship.

In this article, we report a novel Ag@Ag 3 PO 4 @ZnO ternary heterostructures synthesized through a three-step approach. Firstly, single-crystalline Ag nanorods are fabricated and served as the templates for subsequent Ag 3 PO 4 deposition. Secondly, Ag 3 PO 4 crystals are grown around Ag core nanorods through a solution co-precipitation process, leading to the Ag@Ag 3 PO 4 binary heterostructures. Finally, ZnO nanorod arrays on the surface of the Ag@Ag 3 PO 4 heterostructures are realized via a seeded growth strategy, forming the typical Ag@Ag 3 PO 4 @ZnO ternary heterostructures. The photodegradation of rhodamine B under ultraviolet–visible light irradiation indicates that the Ag@Ag 3 PO 4 @ZnO ternary heterostructures exhibit much higher activities than pure Ag 3 PO 4 and binary heterostructures of Ag@Ag 3 PO 4 . The higher photocatalytic activity of the Ag@Ag 3 PO 4 @ZnO composites may be attributed to the effective photogenerated charge separation at heterointerfaces of Ag/Ag 3 PO 4 and Ag 3 PO 4 /ZnO, and the rapid electron transport along one-dimensional Ag and ZnO nanorods.

Ag/AgCl is a visible-light plasmonic photocatalyst that has attracted considerable attention because of its high visible-light absorption and activity owing to the surface plasmon resonance of noble-metal nanoparticles. In this study, Ag/AgCl/ZnO tetrapod composite was prepared by introducing ZnO tetrapods into Ag/AgCl prepared by a polydopamine reduction route. Ag/AgCl was densely deposited on the three-dimensional support framework provided by the ZnO tetrapods. The framework possessed a certain degree of porosity, thereby improving the specific surface area of the Ag/AgCl/ZnO composite. The interaction of ZnO with Ag/AgCl further increased the separation and transfer of electron–hole pairs. The Ag/AgCl/ZnO composite showed excellent photocatalytic activity and good stability. Under xenon lamp irradiation for 20 min, degradation of rhodamine B reached 90%. After four recycling tests, degradation remained stable without any sign of reduction. Ag/AgCl/ZnO tetrapod composite is shown to be a kind of green photocatalyst offering high activity, good stability, and recyclability.

Dopamine (DA) is a neurotransmitter which plays a key role in the life science. Self-assembled [email protected] nanorod dimers based on aptamers were developed for ultrasensitive dopamine detection. The electronic field was significantly enhanced by the addition of silver shell coating on the surface of Au NR dimer. The results displayed that [email protected] NR dimers were ideal building blocks for constructing the SERS substrates with prominent Raman enhancement effects. It was found that with using this Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-encoded this sensing system, a limit of detection of 0.006 pM and a wide linear range of 0.01–10 pM for dopamine detection were obtained. Our work open up a new avenue for the diagnosis and drug-discovery programs.

The present study reported a novel Fe-Ag/GAC catalyst and investigated its catalytic activity for the degradation of Acid Red 73 by persulfate. The results of characterization of Fe-Ag/GAC showed that Nano-Ag was supported uniformly on GAC with high degree of crystallinity and Fe distributed mostly in the forms of noncrystalline FeO/Fe 3 O 4 or FeOOH. The presence of catalyst greatly enhanced the removal rate of AR 73, and it was found that 99% of decolorization efficiency and 84.1% of total organic carbon removal (TOC) of AR 73 could be obtained at the neutral pH within 60 min, respectively. The optimized experiments found that either higher temperature or higher dosage of Fe-Ag/GAC or Na 2 S 2 O 8 was favored for the degradation of Acid Red 73. Lowering solution pH could improve the degradation rate of AR 73. The recycling test indicated that the catalyst was relatively stable, showing a promising application.
