The conversion mechanism of Al-goethite under the action of different additives (lime or reductant for typical or reductive Bayer digestion) was investigated by thermodynamic calculation, XRD, and SEM−EDS. The results show that the formation of Fe-substituted hydrocalumite is crucial to converting Al-goethite to hematite during Bayer digestion by adding lime. However, the conversion proceeds more easily under the action of reductant due to the rapid formation of magnetite. Additionally, Bayer liquor composition significantly affects the product composition and also the conversion rate of Al-goethite. Compared to typical Bayer digestion with Al-goethite containing gibbsitic bauxite as raw material, the red mud yield of reductive Bayer digestion decreases from 39.02% to 31.19%, and the grade of TFe in red mud increases from 41.66% to 53.80%.

A luminescent hydroxyl-functionalized MIL-53(Al) (OH-MIL-53(Al)) was prepared by one-step solvent thermal method for multiresponsive fluorescence sensor. The OH-MIL-53(Al) exhibited uniform nanospheres with average diameter of 150±20 nm, flexible three-dimensional frameworks, and good dispersion in water. The OH-MIL-53(Al) emitted green fluorescence with a maximum wavelength of 515 nm which showed good fluorescence quenching response for sensing F − and fluorescence enhancement response for water, with good day-to-day stability. The mechanism was based on protonation/deprotonation of hydroxyl group located on OH-MIL-53(Al). Good linear relationship could be found between the luminescence intensity of 515 nm and F − concentrations in the range of 0–60 µM with a determination limit of 70 nM. At the concentrations from 0% to 100%, the fitting curve for water content was in good agreement with the linear equation, and the detection limit was 0.10%. OH-MIL-53(Al) demonstrated excellent fluorescence sensing performance, indicating that it could be used as a multiresponsive sensor to practical application.

In order to deal with the deficiency of active sites in Ni catalyst, Ni Fe nanosheet (Ni-Fe/Al 2 O 3 -NS) catalyst was synthesized by using Ni-Fe-Al LDH as the precursor. The catalyst was further utilized in the lipid hydrotreatment for green diesel production. With a lamellar structure and large Ni loading (more than 60%), the Ni-Fe/Al 2 O 3 -NS catalyst possessed abundant Ni sties with high dispersion, large surface area, and strong acidity. Moreover, in Ni-Fe/Al 2 O 3 -NS the highly active Ni 3 Fe phase was formed, which promoted the decarbonylation route in hydrotreatment. The Ni-Fe/Al 2 O 3 -NS catalyst achieved 98.7% conversion with 98.1% alkane yield in oleic acid hydrotreatment under very mild conditions (220 °C, 2 MPa of hydrogen pressure, 3 h). The catalytic performance of Ni-Fe/Al 2 O 3 -NS was much higher than traditional Ni-Fe/Al 2 O 3 and other catalysts reported in current related studies.

LaSrRO 4 :Mn 4+ (R = Al and Ga) are prepared by the high-temperature solid-phase method in air. Their luminescence properties, crystal structure, concentration dependent spectra, time-resolved spectra, fluorescence lifetime, and luminous mechanism are systematically researched, respectively. Mn 4+ ion is the luminescence center of LaSrRO 4 :Mn 4+ (R = Al and Ga). The excitation spectra of LaSrRO 4 :Mn 4+ (R = Al and Ga) under monitored at 715 nm lie in the range 210 – 650 nm with two main excitation peaks at ∼360 nm and 520 nm. With the excitation at 360 and 520 nm, LaSrRO 4 :Mn 4+ (R = Al and Ga) emit far-red light and have the emission spectra covering the region from 650 to 800 nm due to the 2 E g → 4 A 2g transition of Mn 4+ ions. The ideal Mn 4+ concentration in LaSrAlO 4 :Mn 4+ and LaSrGaO 4 :Mn 4+ are ∼ 0.4 mol% and 0.6 mol%, respectively. The spectral properties of samples verify the crystal field s via the Tanabe-Sugano energy level diagram of Mn 4+ ion. LaSrRO 4 :Mn 4+ (R = Al and Ga) have the emission spectra match with the absorption spectra of the plant photosensitive pigments red light and far-red light, which infers their promising application in plant growth light-emitting diode (LED) lamp

Establishing strong interfacial interactions through novel support materials and poly-metallic alloys is an effective method to boost the catalytic performance for electrocatalytic alcohols oxidation . Herein, PdBiMn particles embedded pleated layered rGO-modified novel prismatic Al-based metal-organic framework (Al 2 (OH) 2 (H 2 O) 2 [C 10 O 8 H 2 ] or MIL-118A) composites were fabricated via a simple hydrothermal-impregnation reduction approach and employed in ethylene glycol oxidation reaction (EGOR). It is noticed that the strong electronic effects of PdBiMn alloys and the strong adsorption of oxygened species could alter the electronic structure of Pd and facilitate the removal of toxic species, while the rGO/MIL-118A strongly fixes abundant PdBiMn alloys, providing more active sites and accelerating the interfacial electron transfer . Impressively, the forward peak current density of trimetallic PdBiMn@rGO/MIL-118A catalyst is 239.62 mA cm −2 , it is almost 8.86 times greater than that of Pd/C. Additionally, after 3600 s chronoamperometry test, the current density of trimetallic catalyst retains about 75.54% of the initial current density.

Zn–Al layered double hydroxides (Zn–Al LDHs) with a typical layered structure were successfully synthesized by the hydrothermal method . The effects of molar ratios of Zn and Al on the structure, morphology, chemical composition and photocatalytic performance of Zn–Al LDHs were systematically investigated. By adjusting the Zn/Al molar ratio, it can be found that the Zn–Al-LDH-3 sheet with the ratio of 3 exhibits the best photocatalytic activity and reusability, which is mainly ascribed to the formation of more photo-generated holes in the photocatalytic process proved by the free radical quenching experiment. The optimized conditions of catalyst dosages, rhodamine B (RhB) concentrations and initial pH values to achieve the highest were also investigated in detail. This work provides a simple method for designing environmental friendly layered double hydroxide photocatalysts with special morphologies.

Aluminum (Al) powder has been widely used in solid composite propellants (SCPs) due to its high energy density and appropriate combustion kinetics. However, the presence of a passivation shell (Al 2 O 3 ) on the surface of Al would reduce its reactivity and heat release. Herein, a facile ‘one-step’ modification method was proposed for the fabrication of micron-sized Al substitutes in SCP, aiming to induce the involvement of Al cores in the reaction by letting the liquid metal embrittlement (LME) damage the homogeneous Al 2 O 3 shell. Oxidation weight gain experiments in the air atmosphere were conducted to investigate the effect of liquid metal content on the breakthrough of the Al 2 O 3 shell to improve ignition and combustion performance. Moreover, the composites with gallium-based liquid metal (Galinstan) addition of 3 wt% exhibited the largest oxidation weight gain and oxidation weight gain rates, which were approximately 6 and 8-fold higher than that of the raw-Al particles, respectively. Furthermore, the resulting Galinstan-modified aluminum-based powder (GLM-Al) was used as a metal fuel for the formulation of SCP to validate its thermal and combustion properties. According to the DSC results, the heat release of SCP-2 containing GLM-Al was 3321 J·g −1 , which is 1.42 folds of that from the reference SCP-1(2341 J∙g −1 ). Furthermore, SCP-2 exhibited a 12 % increase in burning rate under 0.1 MPa air atmosphere and a much higher pressurization rate (5.4 MPa·s −1 ) than that of SCP-1 (2.6 MPa·s −1 ) under 1 MPa argon atmosphere. The resulting condensed combustion product (CCP) size of SCP-2 is much smaller than that of SCP-1.

Effects of hollow carbon nanospheres on the combustion behavior of Al/Fe 2 O 3 -based thermite sticks are studied in this work. The results from laser ignition experiments confirm that the presence of hollow carbon nanospheres not only can reduce the ignition threshold because of the excellent laser energy absorption capacity, but also play a positive role in heightening the heat transfer efficiency by introducing pores and increasing heat-flow output during the combustion process. The video snapshots indicate that the combustion propagation stages, including ignition, acceleration, and steady combustion, all improved significantly with the suitable inclusion of hollow carbon nanospheres. The modified composites containing 4 wt% hollow carbon nanospheres exhibit a minimum ignition threshold (28 mJ), shorter acceleration duration (76 ms), higher combustion rate (10.10 cm/s) and steady combustion temperature (~2850 K). Furthermore, it exhibits a remarkable enhancement in energy release (537.36 J/g) and pressure output (0.91 Mpa), which are 1.67 and 1.34 times than that of pristine thermite sticks, respectively. Overall, this work demonstrates that the high porosity structure and heat-flow release of thermite sticks facilitate convective heat transfer and eventually improve the combustion behavior, which can provide some reference in the design and optimization of microstructure and composition in micro-energetic devices.

Metastable intermolecular composites (MICs) composed by solid fuel and oxidizer can undergo violent redox reaction with release of huge amount of energy. Integration of MIC with microelectromechanical-system (MEMS) is of particular interest to meet the demand of miniaturization in modern pyrotechnic devices. Meanwhile, fluorine-containing oxidizers are favored in MIC owing to their potential to fluorinate the oxide passivation layer in common elemental fuels. Herein, Co(OH)F was employed for the first time as a novel fluorine-containing oxidizer in Al-based MIC. Vertically aligned Co(OH)F@Al nanobelt arrays (NAs) with tunable morphology were successfully fabricated on a variety of substrates (Si, glass, Ni, Cu, Ti) via a facile hydrothermal synthesis followed by electron beam evaporation. The whole fabrication process is highly compatible with modern MEMS technology. The thermal behavior of pure Co(OH)F and Co(OH)F@Al composites was comprehensively investigated by TG-DSC and a series of ex-situ and in-situ characterization. It was found that, Co(OH)F@Al composites achieved main exothermal reaction before melting of Al regardless of morphology and equivalence ratio. This feature is attributed to the etching of Al 2 O 3 shell by HF released from Co(OH)F which is termed as pre-ignition reaction. To elucidate the effect of micro-structure on the actual specific heat release, we proposed a phenomenological model which can be a reference for future micro-structure design of MIC.

Arsenic (As) pollutants are highly toxic and using Ca-based minerals to adsorb As 2 O 3 is effective for emission control. In this study, a fixed-bed experimental system was used to study the adsorption of As 2 O 3 by the mixture of CaO, SiO 2 , and Al 2 O 3 at 1200 °C. The amount of As adsorbed by multiple minerals was higher than that by single minerals, indicating enhanced adsorption of As 2 O 3 under the coupling effects of Ca, Si, and Al. The adsorption amount of As first increased and then decreased with an increase in the CaO:(SiO 2 +Al 2 O 3 ) and SiO 2 :Al 2 O 3 ratios. Adsorbed As was mainly enriched in Ca-Si-Al mineral, including Ca 2 Al 2 SiO 7 . Density Functional Theory calculation was conducted to study the As 2 O 3 adsorption on the Ca 2 Al 2 SiO 7 (0 0 1) surface. The analysis of Mulliken charge and density of states showed that As 2 O 3 molecules formed Al-O, O-As, and Ca-O bonds with the Al, O, and Ca sites. Si and Al in Ca 2 Al 2 SiO 7 enhanced the adsorption ability of Ca sites by promoting electron transfer . Si/Al ratio close to 1:1 is conducive to the formation of Si-O-Al structures, thus further enhancing the adsorption. The results can help optimize coal blending strategies and modify adsorbents to further reduce As emissions during coal combustion .

To remedy the widespread chromium (Cr) pollution in the environment, this study mainly used the ultrasonic-assisted co-precipitation and precipitation methods to prepare FeS-modified Fe-Al-layered double hydroxide (FeS/LDH) composite material. The experimental results showed that FeS/LDH has higher removal efficiency of Cr in aqueous solution and stronger anti-interference ability than unmodified LDH. Under the same reaction conditions, the removal efficiency of total Cr(Cr(T)) using LDH was 34.85%, and the removal efficiency of Cr(VI) was 46.76%. For FeS/LDH, the removal efficiency of Cr(T) and Cr(VI) reached 99.57% and 100%, respectively. The restoration of Cr(T) and Cr(VI) by FeS/LDH satisfied the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The maximum adsorption capacity of Cr(T) and Cr(VI) achieved 102.9 mg/g and 147.7 mg/g. The efficient removal of Cr by FeS/LDH was mainly based on the triple synergistic effect of anion exchange between Cr(VI) and interlayer anions, redox of Cr(VI) with Fe2+and S2−, and co-precipitation of Fe3+and Cr3+.Keywords:chromium;FeS/LDH;double reduction;anti-interference;co-precipitation

The transmembrane diffusion of soluble lithium polysulfides (LiPS) is the main cause of capacity loss and negative electrode corrosion in lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. In order to suppress the shuttle effect of LiPS, a selective permeability membrane was constructed by introducing functional materials with negative charge groups. Herein, a functional separator with high ion conductivity is obtained by casting the environmentally friendly MOF material sulfonic acid functionalized amino-MIL-101 (S-MIL-101) onto the separator. It is found that the functionalized sulfonic acid group not only accelerates the conduction of the lithium-ion but also repels the polysulfide anion through electrostatic interactions . With this functionalized separator, the initial capacity of batteries is 1444.6 mAh·g −1 at 0.2C and remains 990.4 mAh·g −1 after 100 cycles. Meanwhile, the batteries still deliver a high initial discharge capacity of 895.7 mAh·g −1 even with the high-sulfur-loading cathode (4.7 mg cm −2 ) at 0.2C.
