A high-efficiency DOPO-based reactive flame retardant with bi-hydroxyl for low-flammability epoxy resin

Junjun Zhang,Huajun Duan,Jianfan Cao,Jiahao Zou,Huiru Ma

A high-efficiency DOPO-based reactive flame retardant (DPE) with bi-hydroxyl was successfully synthesized via reacting DOPO with imine obtained from the condensation of ethanolamine and 1,4-phthalaldehyde, and used as co-curing agent to improve the fire safety of epoxy resin (EP). Its chemical structure was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra, 1 H, 31 P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra and elemental analysis. The curing behavior, thermal properties, flame-retardant properties of EP/DPE systems were investigated. The results revealed that DPE slightly decreased the glass transition temperature ( T g ), but accelerated the curing cross-linking reaction of EP. Furthermore, DPE decreased thermal degradation rate of epoxy matrix and promoted the formation of residual char at high temperature. After adding DPE, the flame retardant of epoxy thermosets was greatly improved. Especially, the thermoset modified with 5 wt% DPE achieved limiting oxygen index (LOI) value of 33.6% and V-0 rating in UL-94 test, demonstrating the highly efficient flame retardancy. While its peak heat release rate (PHRR), total heat release (THR) and total smoke production (TSP) were respectively decreased by 32.6%, 17.8%, and 13.9% compared with neat EP. Moreover, the research on flame retardant mechanism disclosed that DPE played dual flame-retardant effect in the gaseous and condensed phases.

Excellent energy storage density and efficiency in lead-free Sm-doped BaTiO3–Bi(Mg0.5Ti0.5)O3 ceramics

Zhi-Gang Liu,Zhen-Hua Tang,Song-Cheng Hu,Di-Jie Yao,Fei Sun,De-Yang Chen,Xiao-Bin Guo,Qiu-Xiang Liu,Yan-Ping Jiang,Xin-Gui Tang

Progress in energy storage ceramics for applications has been of interest owing to their clean green nature and excellent ferroelectric/dielectric performances. In this study, lead-free Sm-doped 0.95BaTiO3–0.05Bi(Mg0.5Ti0.5)O3 (BT–BMT–xSm) relaxor ferroelectric ceramics were synthesized and confirmed to be an appropriate material for storage devices. After the introduction of Sm2O3 into BT–BMT ceramics, their hysteresis loops gradually shrank and became slender, which is beneficial to achieving high efficiency energy storage in ceramic capacitors. The maximum recoverable energy density for the BT–BMT–xSm (x = 0.03) sample reached 3.86 J cm−3 at normal temperature, and its corresponding energy efficiency reached 81.6%. Moreover, it was found from impedance spectroscopy that the breakdown field strength is related to the oxygen defect content in the samples. Ceramic samples with fewer defects have better insulation performance, which means that a high breakdown field strength will be obtained. With proper doping, enhanced relaxor behaviour and breakdown field strength were obtained to achieve excellent energy storage properties.

Crystal structure and luminescence properties of lead-free metal halides (C6H5CH2NH3)3MBr6 (M = Bi and Sb)

Da Chen,Fulong Dai,Shiqiang Hao,Guojun Zhou,Quanlin Liu,Christopher Wolverton,Jing Zhao,Zhiguo Xia

Organic–inorganic hybrid metal halides have received extensive attention owing to their versatile structures and optoelectronic properties. Herein, we report two lead-free metal halides, (PMA)3BiBr6 and (PMA)3SbBr6 [PMA+: (C6H5CH2NH3)+, as the abbreviation of phenylmethylammonium], which possess iso-structural zero-dimensional structures and crystallize in the monoclinic space group P21/c. (PMA)3BiBr6 and (PMA)3SbBr6 exhibit optical band gaps of ∼3.50 and 3.40 eV, respectively, and density functional theory calculations reveal their indirect bandgap behaviors. Upon 350 and 425 nm excitation, (PMA)3BiBr6 and (PMA)3SbBr6 exhibit broadband emission peaking at 510 nm and 625 nm with wide full-widths at half-maximum of ∼153 and 175 nm, respectively. The emission mechanism of the metal halides is attributed to self-trapped exciton emission. The relationship between the crystal structure and luminescence intensity is also discussed. Finally, both metal halides have high decomposition temperatures and are stable for long-term storage under ambient conditions, demonstrating their potential for optoelectronic applications.

Doping optimization mechanism of a bi-functional perovskite catalyst La0.8Sr0.2Co0.8Ni0.2O3-δ for Li–O2 battery cathode

Junfang Cheng,Ziling Wang,Lu Zou,Ming Zhang,Guozhu Zhang,Yabin Dong,Yuexing Jiang,Yizhen Huang,Naotoshi Nakashima,Bo Chi

Perovskite oxides with low cost and high catalytic activity are reported as suitable cathode catalysts for the Li–O 2 batteries (LOBs), while their catalytic mechanism is not yet fully clarified. Herein, La 0.8 Sr 0.2 Co 0.8 Ni 0.2 O 3-δ (LSCN8282) perovskite oxide is used as a cathode catalyst for the LOBs and further improved by adjusting the Co/Ni ratio in the B-site. Thus, La 0.8 Sr 0.2 Co 0.6 Ni 0.4 O 3-δ (LSCN8264) and La 0.8 Sr 0.2 Co 0.4 Ni 0.6 O 3-δ (LSCN8246) are also synthesized and used as cathode catalysts for the LOBs. Among the obtained perovskite catalysts in this study, LSCN8264 shows the highest electrochemical activity in 1 M KOH and best catalytic effectivity when used in the LOBs. The catalytic mechanism and doping optimization are clarified by analyzing the morphology of the discharge products and the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) of the perovskite oxides.

Evolution of Bi Nanowires from BiOBr Nanoplates Through a NaBH4 Reduction Method with Enhanced Photodegradation Performance

Yuxiang Yan,Hua Yang,Zao Yi,Xiangxian Wang,Ruishan Li,Tao Xian

In this work, we have adopted a coprecipitation method to synthesize BiOBr nanoplates with diameter of 150–450 nm and thickness of 40–80 nm, and then created Bi nanowires (diameter: 6 nm) on their surface through a NaBH4 reduction method. Evolution of Bi nanowires was systematically investigated by varying the concentration of NaBH4 solution and reaction time. It is demonstrated that with increasing the NaBH4 concentration (2 h reaction), Bi nanowires are gradually evolved from BiOBr crystals, and in particular treatment by 110 mM NaBH4 solution leads to the complete evolution of BiOBr nanoplates to Bi nanowires. At a low-concentration NaBH4 solution (30 mM), BiOBr crystals are partially reduced to Bi nanowires with increasing reaction time, and then the Bi nanowires are recrystallized into BiOBr nanowires/nanoparticles on the surface of BiOBr nanoplates. At a high-concentration NaBH4 solution (110 mM), BiOBr nanoplates are easily reduced to Bi nanowires with a short reaction time, and further prolonging the reaction time leads to the gradual transformation of Bi nanowires into Bi4O5Br2 nanoparticles/nanowires. Photocatalytic performances of the samples were evaluated by eliminating rhodamine B from aqueous solution under simulated sunlight illumination. It is demonstrated that the creation of Bi nanowires (an appropriate content) on the surface of BiOBr nanoplates can produce excellent Bi@BiOBr composite photocatalysts with enhanced photodegradation performances. The underlying enhanced photocatalytic mechanism was investigated and discussed.

Construction of Sn-Bi-MOF/Ti3C2 Schottky junction for photocatalysis of tetracycline: Performance and degradation mechanism

Yunmeng Cao,Lin Yue,Zaixing Li,Yonghui Han,Jing Lian,Huiping Qin,Shuyan He

In this study, Sn–Bi–MOF/Ti 3 C 2 heterojunction catalysts were prepared using the solvothermal method, and their photocatalytic ability to degrade and mineralize tetracycline (TC) under illumination was investigated. After 90 min of photocatalysis, the pollutant had a degradation efficiency of 96.2% and a mineralization rate of 45.5%. The physicochemical properties of the catalysts were analyzed using various methods. The effects of the solution pH, coexisting anions, and water quality on the catalyst performance were investigated. ·O 2 − and h + are the main active substances in the photocatalytic mechanism, as demonstrated by free-radical quenching experiments and EPR tests. The degradation of TC and the intermediates produced were determined using 3D fluorescence and LC-MS. The photocatalytic mechanism of Sn–Bi–MOF/Ti 3 C 2 was proposed based on free radical determination and electrochemical tests. The formation of the Schottky junction accelerated the transfer of electrons to Ti 3 C 2 and improved the separation of charges, which led to the generation of free radicals. Sn–Bi–MOF/Ti 3 C 2 still exhibited good catalytic ability after four cycles of the experiments, and the XRD patterns before and after the reaction were consistent, which illustrates that the composite structure was stable. Overall, Sn–Bi–MOF/Ti 3 C 2 has promising applications in the photocatalytic removal of refractory pollutants.

Bi-Induced Structural Distortion Triggers Polarization Reinforcement and Enhanced Catalytic Degradation of Rhodamine B over BaTiO3

Hanxun Qin,Wenxuan Cao,Faqi Zhan,Qiong Liu,Jiagang Wu

Bi-induced structural distortion was strategically engineered in BaTiO3 nanowires (BT NWs) to reinforce spontaneous polarization and achieve superior piezo-photocatalytic performance for efficient dye degradation. Bi-doped BT NWs (BT_xBi NWs) were synthesized via a facile two-step hydrothermal method. Comprehensive characterizations revealed that Bi3+ substitution at the A-site induces significant lattice contraction, surface cracks, polycrystalline characteristics, and an increased tetragonal phase fraction. These structural distortions, together with an enhanced carrier concentration and optimized electronic structure, markedly improve ferroelectric polarization, charge separation efficiency, and piezoelectric response under mechanical stress. Under ultrasonic-light synergistic conditions, the optimal BT_0.04Bi NWs exhibited an exceptional Rhodamine B (RhB) degradation rate constant of 487.3 × 10-3 min-1, which surpassed most reported piezo-photocatalysts. Reactive species trapping, electrochemical measurements, KPFM, DFT calculations, and COMSOL simulations collectively confirm that Bi doping breaks local symmetry, introduces additional polarization components, redistributes charge density, and amplifies local piezoelectric potential at crack sites. This work provides a novel and effective doping strategy for simultaneously modulating polarization and electronic properties in ferroelectric perovskites, offering new insights into the design of high-performance piezo-photocatalysts for environmental remediation.

Enhanced photocatalytic N2 fixation and water purification using Bi/ZnSnO3 composite: Mechanistic insights and novel applications

Chunran Zhao,Lin Yue,Shude Yuan,Xujie Ren,Zhihao Zeng,Xin Hu,Leihong Zhao,Ying Wu,Yiming He

A composite of cheap metallic Bi-decorated ZnSnO 3 was synthesized via a solvothermal method and applied for photocatalytic N 2 fixation for the first time. The results demonstrated that the Bi/ZnSnO 3 composite with 1.5 % Bi exhibited superior photocatalytic performance. with the optimal sample producing NH 3 at a rate of 988 μmol/L g -1 h −1 under simulated sunlight. This is 5 times faster than that of pure ZnSnO 3 . Additionally, the Bi/ZnSnO 3 composite showed significantly better photocatalytic performance than pure ZnSnO 3 in RhB degradation. Structural analyses confirmed successful loading of Bi nanoparticles on the surface of ZnSnO 3 . Furthermore, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy analysis revealed that the surface plasmon resonance effect of metal Bi effectively improved the optical absorption performance. However, the sensitization of metal Bi had a limited contribution to the high photocatalytic activity of the Bi/ZnSnO 3 . Electrochemical analyses indicated that the Schottky barrier formed between Bi and ZnSnO 3 captured photo-generated electrons and promoted the charge separation, which was considered responsible for the increased photoactivity of Bi/ZnSnO 3 .This work provides a new application of Bi/ZnSnO 3 and may offer new ideas for the application of ZnSnO 3 materials in the field of photocatalysis, which are crucial for addressing environmental pollution and energy conversion challenges.

Fast and Sensitive Detection of CO by Bi-MOF-Derived Porous In2O3/Fe2O3 Core–Shell Nanotubes

Fan Zhao,Wei Cao,Pu-Hong Wang,Jingfeng Wang,Lingmin Yu,Zhihong Qiao,Zhi-Jun Ding

In2O3 is an optimal material for sensitive detection of carbon monoxide (CO) gas due to its low resistivity and high catalytic activity. Yet, the gas response dynamics between the CO gas molecules and the surface of In2O3 is limited by its solid structure, resulting in a weak gas response value and sluggish electron transport. Herein, we report a strategy to synthesize porous In2O3/Fe2O3 core–shell nanotubes derived from In/Fe bimetallic organic frameworks. The fabricated porous In2O3/Fe2O3-4 core–shell nanotubes present outstanding gas sensitivities, including a response value 3.8 times (33.7 to 200 ppm CO at 260 °C) higher than that of monometallic-derived In2O3 (8.7), ultrashort response and recovery times (23/76 s) to 200 ppm CO, low detection limit (1 ppm), promising selectivity, and long-term stability. The enhanced sensing mechanisms are clarified by the combination of experiment and first-principles calculations, showing that the synergetic strategy of higher adsorption energy, increased electrical conductivity, higher electron transfer numbers, and larger specific surface area of porous core–shell structures promotes the surface activity and charge transfer efficiency. The present work paves a way to tune gas-sensing materials with special morphologies for the development of high-performance CO sensors.

Photocatalytic degradation of butyl benzyl phthalate by S-scheme Bi/Bi2O2CO3/Bi2S3 under simulated sunlight irradiation

Kexue Liu,Chunliu Liang,Huijuan Lv,Xiangfeng Yao,Xianxu Li,Jia Ding,Na Chen,Suo Wang,Wenrong Liu,Xue Hu,Jun Wang,Huanshun Yin

As a kind of plasticizer , butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP) presents a serious hazard to the ecosystem. Therefore, there is a strong need for an effective technique to eliminate the risk of BBP. In this work, a new photocatalyst of Bi/Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 /Bi 2 S 3 with an S-scheme heterojunction was synthesized using Bi(NO 3 ) 3 as the Bi source, Na 2 S as the S source, and DMF as the carbon source and reductant. Numerous techniques have been used to characterize Bi/Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 /Bi 2 S 3, such as scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy , X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The improved photoactivity of Bi/Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 /Bi 2 S 3 was evaluated by photoelectrochemical response, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, photoluminescence , UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and electrochemical Mott Schottky spectroscopy. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of this composite for BBP degradation under simulated sunlight irradiation could be attributed to the surface plasmon resonance effect of Bi metal and the heterojunction structure of Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 and Bi 2 S 3 . The degradation rate of Bi/Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 /Bi 2 S 3 was 85%, which was 4.52 and 1.52 times that of Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 and Bi 2 S 3 , respectively. The prepared photocatalyst possessed good stability and reproducibility in eliminating BBP. The improved photocatalytic activity of Bi/Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 /Bi 2 S 3 was demonstrated with the formation of an S-scheme heterojunction, and the degradation mechanism was discussed with a liquid chromatograph mass spectrometer .

Yunsheng Fu,Xianglei Yu,Li Liu,Xianjie Tang,Junpeng Li,Guoyou Gan

Low-temperature lead-free silver pastes deserve thorough investigation for sustainable development and application of MgTiO3ceramics in electronic devices. In this study, a series of Bi2O3-B2O3-ZnO-SiO2-Al2O3-CaO glasses with suitable softening temperatures were prepared via melt quenching using a type of micrometer silver powder formed by silver nanoparticle aggregates. The composite pastes containing silver powder, Bi2O3glass powder and an organic vehicle were then screen-printed. The effects of glass powder concentration and sintering temperature on the microstructure of the surface interface were also investigated. The results showed that the silver paste for microwave dielectric ceramic filters (MgTiO3) possessed good electrical conductivity (2.28 mΩ/□) and high adhesion (43.46 N/mm2) after medium temperature (670 °C) sintering. Thus, this glass powder has great application potential in non-toxic lead-free silver pastes for metallization of MgTiO3substrates.Keywords:silver paste;MgTiO3;bonding strength;low-temperature sintering
