In this work, a label-free photoelectrochemical (PEC) immunosensor was developed for ultrasensitive detection of insulin based on MWCNTs@SnS 2 @CdS nanocomposites . As graphene-like 2D nanomaterial , SnS 2 nanosheets loaded on the conducting framework of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were adopted for the construction of immunosensor for the first time, providing a favorable substrate for in-situ growth of CdS nanocrystal that had suitable band structure matching well with SnS 2 . The well-matched band structure of these two metal sulfides effectively inhibited the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, thus improving the photo-to-current conversion efficiency. Besides, the introduction of MWCNTs facilitated electron transfer across the surface of electrodes, leading to a further increment of photocurrent . The as constructed label-free PEC immunosensor based on MWCNTs@SnS 2 @CdS nanocomposites exhibited excellent PEC performance for the detection of insulin. The concentrations of insulin could be directly detected based on the decrement of photocurrent that was brought by the increased steric hindrances due to the formation of antigen-antibody immunocomplexes. Under the optimal conditions, the PEC immunosensor had a sensitive response to insulin in a linear range of 0.1 pg mL −1 to 5 ng mL −1 with a detection limit of 0.03 pg mL −1 . Meanwhile, good stability and selectivity were achieved as well. The design and fabrication of this PEC immunosensor based on MWCNTs@SnS 2 @CdS nanocomposites not only provided an ideal platform for the detection of insulin, but also opened up a new avenue for the development of immunosensor for some other biomarkers analysis.

Cotton cellulose nanofibers (CCNFs)/In2S3/Ag–CdS nanocomposites were prepared by a typical technical route which combined electrospinning and a chemical method. The results showed that the CCNFs/In2S3/Ag–CdS nanocomposites had a remarkable visible light photocatalytic property and cycling stability, which displayed a significant enhancement compared with that of pure In2S3. Through analysis, this enhancement could be mainly attributed to the multilevel structure of the composites.

Mn-doping into CdS quantum dots (QDs) has been demonstrated a useful way to enhance the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of quantum dot sensitized solar cells (QDSCs), the detailed systematic study is needed to get a better fundamental understanding. This work focuses on the study of the effects of Mn dopant on light harvesting, charge transfer, and charge collection of the solar cells. The results indicate that the Mn-doping into CdS QDs increases the light absorbance and extends the light absorption range, which results in the enhancement of the photo-generated current density. In addition, both the electron transport rate and the electron diffusion length are also increased with the introduction of Mn dopant. So the charge collection efficiency ( η cc ) of the solar cell increases from 89.9% for CdS sample to 96.7% for Mn/CdS sample. As a result, the PCE of Mn/CdS QDSC reaches 3.29%, which is much higher than that of CdS QDSC (2.01%).

A novel ternary CdS/ZnO/graphene composite has been successfully prepared by loading ZnO and CdS nanoparticles in graphene nanosheets via a facile one-step hydrothermal method. The microstructures and properties have been examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy with an energy dispersive spectroscope (EDS), transmission electron microscopy, Raman and UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS). The characterization results reveal that the crystalline of the composite is very well, the graphene sheets were tightly coated with ZnO and CdS nanoparticles, and the light-harvesting was effectively strengthened. Taking photoelectrochemical test, the ternary CdS/ZnO/graphene composite exhibits enhanced photocatalytic activity compared with its foundation matrix binary composites and pure ZnO and CdS. The improved photocatalytic performance can be attributed to the enhanced light absorption, the extremely efficient charge separation, as well as superior durability of the ternary composite. It is proposed that graphene-based composites by coupling graphene to suitable, multiple semiconductors can not only greatly improve the capacity for photocatalytic, but also expand the exploration and utilization of graphene-based nanocomposites for energy conversion.

Mn-doped CdS quantum dot sensitized solar cells based on SnO 2 microsphere photoelectrodes are prepared with successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction method. It is found that with Mn-doped CdS quantum dot sensitizers, the photovoltaic performance of the cells based on SnO 2 microsphere photoelectrodes can obviously be enhanced. The reasons are owing to the improved light absorption and the expanded light absorption edge by doping Mn in CdS quantum dots. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analysis found that the cells with Mn-doped CdS quantum dot sensitized SnO 2 microsphere photoelectrodes can efficiently suppress dark reaction, owing to the increased related resistance. Moreover, it is also found that the Mn-doped CdS quantum dot sensitized SnO 2 microsphere photoelectrode can increase the electron diffusion lifetime in the cell. The power conversion efficiency of the cell with 4 wt% Mn-doped CdS quantum dot sensitizers can attain to 2.80 %, with 53 % enhancement compared with that of the CdS quantum dot sensitized cell (1.83 %).

In this work, reduced graphene oxide (RGO)–CdS/ZnS heterostructure composites have been successfully synthesized by a hydrothermal method by assembling the CdS/ZnS heterostructure nanoparticles on RGO sheets and the reduction of GO occurs simultaneously. The as-prepared RGO–CdS/ZnS composites with the content of 15% RGO exhibit highly active photodegradation of TC. A possible mechanism for the enhanced photocatalytic activity has been discussed. The CdS/ZnS heterostructure facilitates the transformation of electrons, which is excited by light irradiation in the conduction band of CdS. RGO is supposed to be an electron transfer channel, which is used to reduce the recombination of electron–hole pairs, thus enhancing the photo-conversion efficiency. By profiting from the synergy of RGO and CdS/ZnS heterostructure, the photocatalysts not only show a better photocatalytic activity in tetracycline antibiotics but also prevent pure CdS or ZnS from photocorrosion. At last, RGO–CdS/ZnS shows remarkable stability and cyclic performances.

This article describes a straightforward gas–liquid microfluidic approach to generate uniform-sized chitosan microcapsules containing CdS quantum dots (QDs). CdS QDs are encapsulated into the liquid–core of the microcapsules. The sizes of the microcapsules can be conveniently controlled by gas flow rate. QDs-chitosan microcapsules show good fluorescent stability in water, and exhibit fluorescent responses to chemical environmental stimuli. α-Cyclodextrin (α-CD) causes the microcapsules to deform and even collapse. More interestingly, α-CD induces obvious changes on the fluorescent color of the microcapsules. However, β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) has little influence on the shape and fluorescent color of the microcapsules. Based on the results of scanning electron microscopy, the possible mechanism about the effects of α-CD on the chitosan microcapsules is analyzed. These stimuli-responsive microcapsules are low-cost and easy to be prepared by gas–liquid microfluidic technique, and can be applied as a potential micro-detector to chemicals, such as CDs.

Carbon dots (CDs) exhibit distinctive optical, electronic, and physicochemical properties, rendering them effective cocatalysts to enhance the photocatalytic performance of light-absorbing materials. The interplay between CDs and substrates is pivotal in manipulating photogenerated charge separation, transfer, and redistribution, significantly influencing overall photocatalytic efficiency. This study introduces a novel electrostatic interaction strategy to interface positively charged CdS nanorods (CdS NRs) with negatively charged furfural-derived CDs. The resulting optimized composite (25-CDs@CdS NRs), showcases photocatalytic hydrogen production at a rate of 1076 μmol g −1 h −1 . Experimental analyses and theoretical simulations offer insights into the structure–activity relationship, underscoring the crucial role of enhanced electrostatic interaction between CDs and CdS NRs in facilitating efficient charge transfer, activating reaction sites, and improving reaction kinetics. This research establishes an adaptable strategy for integrating CDs with metal-based semiconductors, opening new avenues for developing photocatalytic hybrid assemblies.

3D printing efficiency, as a key indicator of additive manufacturing technology, directly affects its competitiveness in rapid prototyping, small batch production, and even large-scale industrial applications. Compared with traditional manufacturing methods, the high efficiency of 3D printing is often considered a bottleneck, hindering its application across various fields. Herein, a versatile and efficient strategy is proposed, namely, the dimensional reduction printing (DRP) process, to break the obstacle of high efficiency of 3D printing. Specifically, the self-healing CDs/PMMA nanocomposites were constructed via introducing carbon dots (CDs) synthesized by microfluidics into poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) materials. Under the assistance of abundant hydrogen bonding and the entanglement of polymer chains, the fabricated CDs/PMMA nanocomposites exhibited outstanding self-healing properties, which can be utilized as ideal printing inks to achieve a highly efficient 3D printing process through assembling the printed simple 1D and 2D components into complex 3D models. We firmly believe that the DRP strategy opens up an idea for the design of a 3D printing process and points out the direction for the meaningful application of 3D printing technologies.

Metal sulfides with suitable morphology typically possess efficient solar light utilization and suitable band structures for photocatalytic hydrogen production. However, a significant challenge is faced in developing the optimal morphology of individual semiconductors and precisely modulating hybrid heterostructures. Herein, this work reports the superior photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance of hexagonal CdS pyramids compared to other nanostructured CdS catalysts. Additionally, ZnS nanoparticles with zinc vacancies are grown in situ on the surface of the hexagonal CdS pyramids, meticulously constructing a Z-scheme heterojunction of CdS/ZnS. By elaborately adjusting the ratio of Cd to Zn sources, the interfacial structure of the heterojunction can be optimized to significantly reduce the obstruction of charge transfer. With the same concentrations of Cd and Zn sources, the CdS/ZnS heterojunction hexagonal pyramid–nanoparticle morphology exhibits a significantly enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 4660 μmol h−1 g−1 under visible light, which is 4.6 and 84.72 times higher than those of pristine CdS pyramids and ZnS nanoparticles, respectively. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) results comprehensively demonstrate the promoted interfacial charge separation in the Z-scheme CdS/ZnS. This work provides an effective strategy for the rational design of catalyst morphology and construction of Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts for efficient photocatalysis.

It is of great significance and challenges to construct physical field-enhanced photocatalysts for energy and environmental applications. Herein, an artificial-photosynthesized CdS/PbTiO 3 S-scheme heterostructures with the enhancement of polarization electric field have been developed to promote the bifunctionally catalytic efficiencies for Cr(VI) photoreduction degradation of heavy metal pollution and Tetracycline (TC) photooxidation degradation of antibiotic. In our work, CdS nanoparticles are selectively grown on the positive polarization planes of PbTiO 3 microplates to form the same direction for both the ferroelectric polarization field of PbTiO 3 and the built-in electric field of S-scheme heterojunction. In this case, the stable heterostructures of PTO(00−1)/CdS(010) are obtained, and the greatly improved photocatalytic performances of redox degradation are achieved. The charge transfer mechanism and the synergetic effect between the spontaneous ferroelectric polarization and S-scheme heterojunction have been revealed by DFT calculations and experimental verifications. This interesting finding provides new insight into the design of efficient artificial-photosynthesized photocatalytic systems and we hope our work could serve as a valuable reference for our colleagues.
