Vacancy defect-rich NiS2 nanosheets induced by Ce-doping for highly efficient water and urea oxidation reaction

Biying Tian,Yaqin Chen,Jiawen Sun,Yi-Ru Hao,Chunhao Li,Jing Sun,Hui Xue,Qin Wang

The feasibility of enhancing the electrocatalytic performance of sulfides is demonstrated through element doping and vacancy engineering. However, the investigation on the reaction mechanisms of catalyst doping and defects related to oxygen evolution reaction (OER) still faces significant challenges. In this work, a Ce-doped NiS 2 supported on carbon cloth (Ce-NiS 2 @CC) with abundant sulfur vacancy defects was successfully developed through a sequential two-step hydrothermal and high-temperature vulcanization strategy. The results demonstrate that the obtained Ce-NiS 2 @CC catalyst exhibits excellent electrochemical performance for both OER and urea oxidation reaction (UOR). It requires only 1.40 and 1.28 V to achieve a current density of 10 mA/cm 2 for OER and UOR, respectively. Furthermore, the Tafel slopes observed for OER and UOR are noteworthy at 40.2 and 58.3 mV/dec, respectively, suggesting enhanced kinetics and superior catalytic performance. Additionally, the stability tests conducted on the catalyst reveal that the Ce-NiS 2 @CC possesses exceptional electrochemical long-term stability, making it a highly reliable and durable option for various applications. Density functional theory calculations and in situ Raman results demonstrate that Ce doping and sulfur vacancy synergistically promote surface reconstruction to form Ni Ⅲ –O species, modulate the local charge distribution near the Ni site, thereby facilitating the adsorption and activation of water molecules, and consequently accelerating the kinetics of OER. This study systematically investigated the impact of metal doping and vacancy defects on electrocatalytic performance, offering insights into electronic structure regulation and performance optimization for efficient electrocatalysts.

Flame spray pyrolysis synthesized Ni-doped Fe/Ce oxygen carriers for chemical looping dry reforming of methane

Xinyi Chen,Guangsheng Zou,Yanliang Yuan,Zuwei Xu,Haibo Zhao

The current study investigates a nano-Fe/Ce oxygen carriers (OCs) doped with Ni synthesized by flame spray pyrolysis (FSP) method for the chemical looping dry reforming of methane (CL-DRM). The thermodynamic analysis and reaction simulation of the CL-DRM process with iron-based oxygen carriers are first carried out. The result shows that when reacting with CH 4 , Fe 2 O 3 is reduced to Fe 3 O 4 at first, accompanied by generation of H 2 O and CO 2 , and then to Fe with H 2 and CO production. Fe can be oxidized to Fe 3 O 4 and FeO by CO 2 . Subsequently, based on the reaction patterns obtained from the aforementioned analysis, CL-DRM experiment using Ni-doped Fe/Ce oxygen carriers is conducted in a fixed-bed reactor, and the effects of different Ni doping and reaction conditions on the performance of the oxygen carriers are investigated. The OC with a Ni/Fe molar ratio of 2/98 (2NiFe) achieves over 30% CH 4 conversion and 90% CO selectivity in the partial oxidation step and stable cyclic performance. The FSP process facilitates high dispersion of Ni and formation of NiCe and NiFe alloys, which are stable active sites. Moreover, the transformation of Fe oxides and CeO 2 into CeFeO 3 on the surface of the OC has enhanced lattice oxygen availability and further improved cyclic stability.

Phytic acid–loaded Ce-based metal–organic frameworks enabling synergistic interfacial regulation for active/passive corrosion protection

Yun-Xi Jiang,Shu-Fei Yin,You-Lin Zhang,Pan Liu,Hao Li,Lian-Kui Wu,Fa-He Cao

Conventional epoxy coatings rely primarily on passive barrier effects and therefore lack the ability to regulate interfacial corrosion processes after local damage. Here, a physicochemically regulated active/passive epoxy coating is developed by incorporating a phytic acid–loaded cerium-based metal–organic framework (CeMOF-P) as a functional colloidal additive. Owing to the confinement and coordination effects of the CeMOF framework, phytic acid is stably immobilized and uniformly dispersed, resulting in improved coating compactness and interfacial adhesion. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy shows that the CeMOF-P–modified coating exhibits markedly enhanced corrosion resistance and, more importantly, a characteristic non-monotonic impedance evolution with pronounced impedance recovery upon damage, indicating an interfacial regulation mechanism beyond passive shielding. Mechanistic analyses reveal that corrosion-triggered, coordinated release of Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ species and phytic acid leads to the in situ formation of a compact cerium–phosphate–rich interfacial film, which simultaneously suppresses anodic dissolution and cathodic reactions. These results demonstrate that Ce–P synergy enables continuous interfacial regulation rather than transient passivation, providing mechanistic insight into the role of coordination chemistry and colloidal confinement in governing interfacial electrochemical behavior and stability in protective coating systems.

Photothermal synergy-driven low-temperature CO2 Methanation: Interfacial effects and reaction pathways on Ce/Ni inverse catalysts

Ruibin Xiong,Xiaohua Cao,Xingfu Li,Miao Lin,Dedong He,Yubing Li,Jichang Lu,Yongming Luo

Low-temperature CO 2 methanation efficiently enables efficient conversion of CO 2 into methane under mild conditions, presenting substantial potential for enhanced energy efficiency and economic feasibility. However, achieving highly efficient low-temperature CO 2 activation remains a critical challenge due to inherent kinetic constraints. In this study, the inverse-supported Ce/Ni catalyst (11 mol% Ce/Ni) was synthesized, which achieved 82% CO 2 conversion and nearly 100% CH 4 selectivity under photothermal synergy at 220 °C (300 W xenon lamp, 300–2500 nm, 1.5 W·cm −2 ), outperforming most conventional nickel-based catalysts. Moreover, the catalyst exhibited outstanding long-term stability, with only an 8% activity loss after 100 h of continuous operation. This superior performance was attributed to its CeO 2 -Ni interfacial configurations and abundant oxygen vacancies. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy analysis revealed that the CO₂ methanation over this catalyst proceeds via a dual-intermediate pathway involving CO* and HCOO*, with photothermal synergy significantly accelerating the intermediate conversion without altering the intrinsic reaction pathway. This study establishes an innovative strategy for designing low-temperature and high-performance CO 2 methanation catalysts via the integration of an inverse Ce/Ni configuration with photothermal synergy.

Ferroelastic domain switching toughening in Ce–Y–La co-stabilized zirconia ceramics obtained from coated starting powders

Zhaoyubo Zeng,Yunzhong Liu,Yingxiang Zhang,Zhiguang Zhou,Xiaohui Liu

While ensuring good resistance to hydrothermal or high-temperature aging of zirconia ceramics, constant attempts to understand and improve their fracture toughness remain the focus. In this work, 0.1–0.3 mol.% of La 2 O 3 was doped into a 1.5 mol.% Y 2 O 3 +5.5 mol.% CeO 2 co-stabilized zirconia ceramic (C1.5Y5.5Ce) based on a coating route. Compared with conventional 3 mol.% Y 2 O 3 stabilized zirconia (C3Y), their microstructure, mechanical properties, and corresponding toughening mechanisms were studied by XRD , SEM, Raman spectroscopy , XPS and TEM . Non-transformable t’ zirconia phase was found in both Ce–Y and Ce–Y–La co-stabilized ceramics. Tetragonal to monoclinic (t-m) phase transformation toughening combined with ferroelastic domain toughening is considered to be the primary toughening mechanism of these ceramics. Doping of La 2 O 3 causes significant grain refinement, which increases the hardness and facilitates the ferroelastic domain switching. The oxygen vacancy concentration and the valence state of cerium are also affected, resulting in a change in the tetragonal stability. Although with a lower t-m transformation rate, the 0.3 mol.% La 2 O 3 doped C1.5Y5.5Ce possessing the smallest grain size shows a high fracture toughness of 10.17 MPa m 1/2 , which is about 23% higher than that of C3Y.

Symmetry-induced modulation of proton conductivity in Y-doped Ba(Zr,Ce)O3: insights from Raman spectroscopy

Yiming Yang,Jiachen Lu,Xinyu Zhang,Yanuo Shi,Peng Du,Xiao Ling,Nan Yang,Qianli Chen

Y-doped Ba(Zr,Ce)O3 (BZCY) proton conducting ceramics have attracted extensive attention because of their promising applications as electrolytes for intermediate-temperature proton ceramic electrochemical cells. The proton conductivity of BZCY is governed by their lattice volume and crystal symmetry; however, systematic studies of the competition between these two factors are lacking, hindering further improvement of their proton conductivity at low and intermediate temperatures. In this work, the crystal symmetry of BZCY epitaxial films deposited on NdGaO3 (110) is compared to that of polycrystalline bulk BZCY based on Raman spectra. The Raman signal of BZCY epitaxial films is amplified using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy and subsequently extracted utilizing the nonnegative matrix factorization method. The relative Raman intensity ratio of the BO6 octahedra motion to the Ba-BO6 relative motion in the ABO3 structure indicates that as the Ce content increases, the crystal symmetry of polycrystalline bulk BZCY decreases, whereas that of the epitaxial films on NdGaO3 remains consistently lower compared to bulk BZCY. The relationship between the activation energy and relative Raman intensity of epitaxial films and bulk BZCY indicates quantitatively that higher activation energy is observed in the crystal structure with lower symmetry. This work suggests that crystal symmetry has a predominant effect on the activation energy of BZCY. The results provide a deeper insight for developing proton conducting electrolyte membranes with high proton conductivity and low activation energy.

Ce(IO3)2F2⋅H2O: The First Rare-Earth-Metal Iodate Fluoride with Large Second Harmonic Generation Response

Tushagu Abudouwufu,Min Zhang,Shichao Cheng,Zhihua Yang,Shilie Pan

The first rare earth metal iodate fluoride, Ce(IO 3 ) 2 F 2 ⋅H 2 O, was synthesized by a hydrothermal method. In the structure, CeO 5 F 4 polyhedra connect with isolated IO 3 groups to form 1D infinite [Ce(IO 3 ) 2 F 2 ] chains, which interconnect with each other by weak hydrogen bonds to construct the whole structure. Ce(IO 3 ) 2 F 2 ⋅H 2 O produces a large second harmonic generation response, which is three times that of potassium dihydrogenphosphate. Theoretical calculations with DFT and dipole moments were performed to illustrate the relationships between the structure and the properties. The results show that Ce(IO 3 ) 2 F 2 ⋅H 2 O is a new iodate fluoride with novel structure and potential applications in nonlinear optics. Graphical Highly responsive : The first rare earth metal iodate fluoride, Ce(IO 3 ) 2 F 2 ⋅H 2 O, which was synthesized by a hydrothermal method, exhibits a large second harmonic generation response, which is three times that of potassium dihydrogenphosphate (KDP; see figure).

Facet Engineering Induced by Ce Doping: Enhanced (101) Facet Exposure for Boosted Photocatalytic Activity of ZnCdS Nanostructures

Yang Zhang,Yunhua Zhang,Hao Xie

Photocatalytic hydrogen production utilizes solar energy, particularly the visible light portion, to decompose water into hydrogen, offering a clean and sustainable solution to the global energy crisis. Developing efficient and stable visible-light-driven photocatalysts is essential to improve hydrogen evolution efficiency. In this work, Ce-doped ZnCdS photocatalysts were synthesized via a hydrothermal method to enhance charge separation and photocatalytic performance under visible light irradiation. The 5% Ce-doped sample exhibited a hydrogen evolution rate 1.74 times higher than that of pure ZnCdS after 3 hours of irradiation. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses reveal that Ce doping promotes the preferential exposure of highly active (101) facets and induces moderate grain growth, which reduces grain boundary defects and increases the number of active sites for H₂ generation. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analyses confirm that the Ce³⁺/Ce⁴⁺ redox centers lower the energy barrier for charge transfer and enhance electrical conductivity. Moreover, photoluminescence (PL) and photocurrent measurements demonstrate more efficient charge separation. As a result, the Ce-ZnCdS photocatalyst exhibits markedly improved visible-light responsiveness, photocatalytic efficiency, and structural stability, underscoring rare-earth doping as an effective strategy to optimize facet exposure and charge dynamics in ternary sulfide photocatalysts.

Covalent Zwitterionic Peptide-Based Antifouling Coating of the Fused Silica Capillary Applied for CE Separation of Proteins

Qinghua Cao,Shuai Lv,Yue Wang,Xijie Wang,Hailin Cong,Bing Yu

Zwitterionic compounds exhibit strong hydrophilicity, act as hydrogen bond receptors and donors, and form robust hydration layers through ionic solvation, which effectively prevent unwanted protein adsorption. To reduce nonspecific interactions between analytes and the inner surface of the separation compartment and then improve detection sensitivity and separation efficiency, it is essential to modify fused silica capillaries with functional groups. In this study, we synthesized a zwitterionic antifouling peptide (Glu-Lys) 3 Glu using solid-phase peptide synthesis. Then, we bound the peptide to the inner surface of a fused silica capillary using diazo resin as a coupling agent, resulting in stable and excellent antifouling and separation abilities. To evaluate the properties of the coating, we conducted fluorescent protein adsorption and electrophoresis experiments. The obtained results demonstrated that the coating effectively prevented protein adsorption and made it possible to separate five standard proteins in 20 min. Moreover, three proteins of egg white were separated within 15 min. These findings confirmed the very good anti-protein adsorption performance of the peptide-coated capillary and its practical value for various applications.

Electrocatalytic Conversion of CH4 to Oxygenates over Ni and Ce Doped LaCoO3 Perovskite in Aqueous Carbonate Electrolyte

Qilan Shangguan,Huiying Qiu,Yanzhi Sun,Pingyu Wan,Yang Tang,Yongmei Chen

In this study, an electrochemical system for methane conversion was developed, employing Ni- and Ce-doped LaCoO3perovskite as the anode catalyst in an Na2CO3electrolyte. Structural characterization revealed that the La1−yCeyCo1−xNixO3(x = 0–0.5, y = 0–0.12) synthesized by the sol–gel method maintains the perovskite structure, but is rich in oxygen vacancies. Electrochemical studies revealed that the performance of methane activation is related to the presence of Ni(III) in the catalyst, and reactive oxygen species (•OH and HOO−) are provided through water oxidation reactions (WOR) in the Na2CO3electrolyte. The electrocatalytic performance of the synthesized La0.92Ce0.08Co0.5Ni0.5O3during methane conversion was verified in an electrolysis cell, and ethanol and acetic acid were identified as the methane conversion oxygenates. Under ambient conditions, the formation rate of ethanol reached 577.0 μmol gcat−1h−1at 0.90 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) in 0.5 mol L−1Na2CO3. The catalyst was found to retain structural integrity and sustain catalytic activity over multiple reaction cycles.

Design of Ce-doped Zr-UiO-66 integrated with dicationic ionic liquids for highly efficient CO2 cycloaddition

Fangfang Li,Jinjin Wang,Ying-Hua Zhou

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) possess highly tunable structures, making them promising heterogeneous catalysts for efficient CO 2 conversion reactions. In this work, cerium-modified zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks (ZrCe-UiO-66) were engineered and post-synthetically functionalized with dicationic ionic liquid moieties, enabling the simultaneous introduction of strong Lewis acidic sites and nucleophilic ionic liquid units without the need for external co-catalysts. The resulting ZrCe 0.5 -UiO-66-DIL(n-PyRIm) ( n  = 2, 3, 4; R = Et, Pr, Bu, Pe) functionalized MOFs were prepared via a modular grafting approach and exhibited remarkable catalytic performance. Among them, ZrCe 0.5 -UiO-66-DIL(2-PyBuIm) converted epichlorohydrin into the corresponding cyclic carbonate with 96% yield and 98% selectivity under solvent-free conditions at 110 °C and a CO 2 pressure of 0.1 MPa. This outstanding activity arises from a cooperative activation mechanism, in which the mixed Zr 4+ /Ce 4+ activate the epoxide substrate through Lewis acid coordination with the epoxide oxygen, thereby facilitating C O bond activation, while the bromide anions embedded in the ionic liquid moieties promote nucleophilic ring opening. In addition to high catalytic efficiency, the MOF hybrids demonstrated excellent recyclability and broad substrate tolerance. Combined CO 2 adsorption measurements and in situ infrared spectroscopy further revealed key surface intermediates, enabling a plausible mechanistic pathway for the cycloaddition process to be proposed.

Hierarchical integration of carbon dot on Ce-MOF nanozymes in a hydrogel for diabetic alveolar bone repair

Yuhang Zhang,Jingxu Wang,Weiming Yu,Yuting Zhang,Jiaxin Jiang,Yu Chen,Zhe Ji

BA@Ce-MOF exhibits SOD/CAT-like enzyme activities and antioxidant effects. • In situ formation of hydrogel via thiol-ene photo-click chemistry reaction. • The ROS-responsive oxidation of thioether bonds in the hydrogel network accelerates drug release. • Promotes osteogenesis, angiogenesis, and M2 macrophage polarization in vivo. The hyperglycemic and reactive oxygen species (ROS)-rich microenvironment in diabetes readily incites inflammation, and the persistent inflammation exacerbates bone resorption, severely hindering the repair of diabetic alveolar bone defects. The alendronate used in clinical practice can inhibit bone resorption but lacks osteoinductive activity and cannot modulate the inflammatory milieu; traditional Chinese medicine monomers possess anti-inflammatory potential but are limited by low bioavailability. Herein, we developed a multifunctional nanocomposite hydrogel via a hierarchical integration strategy using carbon dots and Ce-MOF nanozymes to promote diabetic alveolar bone repair. In this system, the Ce-MOF, exhibiting superoxide dismutase (SOD)-and catalase (CAT)-like activities, scavenges ROS and enables the sustained release of carbon dots composed of alendronate and baicalin, achieving synergistic antioxidant and antibacterial effects. The hydrogel, formed from vinyl-group-grafted chitosan and thiolated sodium alginate via rapid in situ photoclick chemistry, adapts to irregular defect shapes; the thioether bonds formed in its crosslinked structure enable ROS-triggered acceleration of BA@Ce-MOF nanoparticle release. In vitro, the BA@Ce@CSSA hydrogel demonstrated excellent biocompatibility. Its SOD/CAT activities and the antioxidant function of the monomer synergistically eliminated ROS and induced macrophage M2 polarization for immunomodulation. Concurrently, it enhanced osteogenic differentiation by upregulating RUNX2 and OPN expression. In vivo, Micro-CT and histomorphometric analyses confirmed that BA@Ce@CSSA significantly accelerated and improved the quality of bone regeneration. In summary, this study presents a hierarchically designed therapeutic strategy that effectively promotes bone regeneration by integrating antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, pro-angiogenic, and pro-osteogenic functions within a ROS-responsive hydrogel system, offering a promising approach for treating alveolar bone defects under diabetic conditions.
