By single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, five complexes, catena-[(µ-2,2-bis(4-carboxyphenyl)hexafluoropropane)-(2-(pyidin-2-yl)-1,3-benzothiazole)-aqua-zinc(II)] (1), catena-[(µ-2,2-bis(4-carboxyphenyl)hexafluoropropane)-(2-(pyidin-2-yl)1,3-benzothiazole)-aqua-cadmium(II)] (2), catena-[hepta(µ-2,2-bis(4carboxyphenyl)hexafluoropropane)-diaqua-bis(2-(pyidin-2-yl)-1,3-benzothiazole)-tri-manganes(II)] (3), catena-[(µ-benzene-1,2,4,5-tetracarboxylato)-(2-(pyidin-2-yl)-1,3benzothiazole)copper(II)] (4) and catena-[(µ-3-nitrobenzene-1,2-dicarboxylato)-(2-(pyidin-2-yl)1,3-benzothiazole)-aqua-zinc(II)] (5), were characterized in this research. In these five complexes, H2hfipbb = 2,2-bis(4-carboxyphenyl)hexafluoropropane, H4btec = 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid, H2NPTA = 3-nitrophthalic acid and bpt = 2-(pyridin-2-yl)benzo[d]thiazole). Complexes 1 and 2 occur in the monoclinic system with space group C2/c, 4 and 5 occur in the monoclinic system with space group P21/c, and 3 occurs in the triclinic system with space group P-1. The interaction between CT-DNA (calf thymus DNA) and those complexes was examined using UV spectroscopic analysis, fluorescent spectroscopic analysis, circular dichroism spectroscopy (CD) and viscosity analysis. This research reveals that those complexes have strong ability to interact with DNA, and they all bind to DNA in an intercalation mode, thus affecting the structure of DNA. This binding mode can arise from the interaction between the benzothiazole metal complexes and DNA. Hence, we hope to provide some scientific research bases for studying benzothiazole complexes and designing new thiazole anticancer drugs.

The preparation of the maple leaf-like MnO 2 –SiO 2 @PDA biomimetic composites not only overcame the problem of easy agglomeration of nanoparticles, but also provided rich functional groups, large specific surface areas and good stability, achieving the efficient sorption of Cu(II), Cd(II) and Ni(II) from aqueous solution. The maximum sorption capacities of the MnO 2 –SiO 2 @PDA towards Cu(II), Cd(II) and Ni(II) attained from the Langmuir model were 218.788, 383.420 and 148.939 mg·g −1 , respectively. The sorption of Cu(II), Cd(II) and Ni(II) on the MnO 2 –SiO 2 @PDA were strongly affected by pH, but not by ionic strength, showing good resistance to salt interference. The main sorption mechanism of the MnO 2 –SiO 2 @PDA towards Cu(II), Cd(II) and Ni(II) was the strong surface complexation of the functional groups on the MnO 2 –SiO 2 @PDA with Cu(II), Cd(II) and Ni(II). Moreover, the radii of Cu(II), Cd(II) and Ni(II) ions and their complexation strength with the MnO 2 –SiO 2 @PDA jointly determined the order of the competitive sorption capacities as Cu(II) > Cd(II) > Ni(II). Given the above analyses, the maple leaf-like MnO 2 –SiO 2 @PDA biomimetic composites have excellent application prospects in practical wastewater treatment.

A novel and cost-effective TiO 2 nanofiber membrane on porous fly ash ceramic as support (TNM-PFACS), using fly ash, graphite, and industrial rutile as raw materials, was successfully obtained based on the semi-dry press and hydrothermal process. The phase composition and micro-morphology of TNM-PFACS were characterized and analyzed by XRD, EDS, SEM, and TEM. Furthermore, it was discussed about simultaneous removal of heavy metal ions (Cu(II), Cd(II), and Cr(VI)) and rhodamine B, involving the adsorption and photodegradation process. The results indicated that the removal rate (90.15%) and adsorption capacity (9.56 mg/g) of Cu(II) was maintained, while the adsorption of Cd (II) was inhibited. In the photodegradation process, rhodamine B promoted the reduction of highly toxic Cr(VI) to Cr(III), and the highest removal rate of Cr(VI) reached 97.09%. TNM-PFACS presented simultaneous removal of heavy metal ions and rhodamine B through synergism and antagonism in the adsorption and photodegradation process, which can be applied as a simpler and cost-effective material in industrial wastewater treatment.

In this work, uniform and large gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) including quasi-spherical (QS) Au NPs with average diameters of 70 to 196 nm and trisoctahedral (TOH) Au NPs with average diameters of 140 to 195 nm were successfully synthesized by controlling the concentration of Cu2+ ions and the particle number of 3 nm Au-NP seeds, respectively, using a one-step seeded growth method with Cu2+-mediated Ostwald ripening. It is found that because of the concentration-dependent under-potential deposition of Cu2+ ions (CuUPD), 3 nm Au-NP seeds are firstly changed into Au NPs with a controlled QS- or TOH shape at the initial growth stage, followed by the conformal growth of Au atoms onto the initially formed Au NPs due to Cu2+-mediated Ostwald ripening, in which the extra Au atoms come from the dissolution of in situ Au nuclei by the unavoidable self-nucleation. Moreover, the as-prepared QS Au NPs with a rough surface exhibit a better SERS performance for physically adsorbed probes (crystal violet, CV) than the TOH Au NPs with sharp tips and with a comparable size. Furthermore, the as-prepared QS Au NPs can be used to distinguish nitrile and isonitrile groups by surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) due to the presence of deformation twinnings. Thus, the as-prepared QS Au NPs with a rough surface and deformation twinnings can be further used as templates for the fabrication of bimetallic materials with multi-functionalities.

Polydopamine-Functionalized graphene oxide (PDA-GO) was used to form Polyvinyl Alcohol/Chitosan/PDA-GO (PVA/CS/PDA-GO) hydrogels. FTIR, TGA and SEM investigation showed that PDA had been successfully loaded on graphene oxide nanosheets. Adsorption of metal ions onto the novel PVA/CS/PDA-GO hydrogel beads with variations in pH, contact time, initial metal concentration and temperature had been investigated. Adsorption data were well accurately described by Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model at the optimum pH 5.5. The maximum adsorption capacities of the PVA/CS/PDA-GO were 210.94 mg·g −1 , 236.20 mg·g −1 and 214.98 mg·g −1 for Cu(II), Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions with 40 C, respectively. Meanwhile, desorption efficiency and reusability of the adsorbents were assessed on basis of six consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles. This work provides a simple and environmentally friendly method to obtain the PVA/CS/PDA-GO hydrogel beads, which really would be a potential recyclable adsorbent for removal of hazardous metal ions in waste water.

A cost-effective and eco-friendly engineering method to improve biochar’s physicochemical and sorption performance is critical in various environmental applications. In this study, micro-nano-engineered nitrogenous biochars derived from cow bone meal pyrolyzed at different temperatures and were engineered with the assistance of a ball-milling technique. The ball-milled bone biochars were natural composites combined with plant biochars and hydroxyapatite components on the micro-nanoscale. Both the micropore area and the external specific surface area of the bone biochars were significantly improved after ball-milling. The sorption capacities for heavy metal ions were heavy metal ions were MBC-600 > MBC-450 > BC-600 > MBC-300 > BC-450 > BC-300, consistent with the variation tendency in the specific surface areas of the bone biochars. The adsorption capacities of MBC-600 for Cd(II), Cu(II) and Pb(II) were 165.77, 287.58 and 558.88 mg/g, respectively (T 298K, pH 5.0), representing increases of 93.91.%, 75.56% and 64.61% compared with the un-milled preparation. Surface complexation, cation exchange, chemical precipitation, electrostatic interaction and cation-π bonding were responsible for the removal of heavy metal ions by bone biochar materials. Taken together, the results show that micro-nano-engineered nitrogenous bone biochar prepared using ball-milling technology is a promising material for the remediation of heavy metals-bearing aquatic environments.

The development of an uncomplicated, fast and low-price method for heavy metal ion detection is essential for environmental detection and pollution control. In this research, an innovative type of electrochemical detection sensor was realized by using a kind of glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified with thiacalix[4]arene (TC4A). The results indicated that Cu(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions in the sample solution can be detected quickly and simultaneously in the differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV) mode. The test results can reveal whether the concentration of heavy metal ions in wastewater is up to standard. The optimization of multiple experimental parameters including the amount of modification, pH value, deposition time and deposition potential was studied and accomplished. Under the best experimental conditions, the peak value of the voltammetry current increased linearly with the concentration. Within this range, the peak current value and concentration have a very good linear relationship with increasing concentrations of Cu(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions in the ranges of 1.0–2.0 mg L−1, 0.1–1.0 mg L−1 and 1.0–2.0 mg L−1, respectively. And the limits of detection (S/N = 3) are estimated to be 3.0 μg L−1 for Cu(II), 4.0 μg L−1 for Cd(II) and 2.5 μg L−1 for Pb(II), which are lower than those obtained at the unmodified electrodes. Most importantly, the modified electrode was successfully applied in the determination of heavy metals in river water. This innovative electrochemical detection sensor shows high sensitivity, good stability and reproducibility.

With chloromethylated polystyrene resin being the base material, a new type of salicylic acid-type chelating resin with high capacity was prepared by grafting glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) on the surface of the resin via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization and followed by the derivatization with 5-aminosalicylic acid. Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to characterize the surface composition of the resin. It was found that the grafting degree of GMA increased linearly with the extension of ATRP time and GMA concentration. The maximum adsorption capacities of the resin were up to 4.23 mmol g−1 for Fe(III), 4.02 mmol g−1 for Ag(I), 2.36 mmol g−1 for Ni(II) and 1.75 mmol g−1 for Cu(II) at pH 4.0, respectively. The adsorption kinetics of the four metal ions conform to the model of pseudo second-order kinetics, and adsorption equilibria were better characterized by the Langmuir equation. Thermodynamic parameters were calculated to understand the nature of the adsorption process. The resin possesses excellent desorption rate and reusability. All these results indicate that the resin could be potentially applied to the efficient removal of heavy metal ions from waste water.

The detection of heavy metals in tea infusions is important because of the potential health risks associated with their consumption. Existing highly sensitive detection methods pose challenges because they are complicated and time-consuming. In this study, we developed an innovative and simple method using Ag nanoparticles-modified resin (AgNPs-MR) for pre-enrichment prior to laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy for the simultaneous analysis of Cr (III), Cu (II), and Pb (II) in tea infusions. Signal enhancement using AgNPs-MR resulted in amplification with limits of detection of 0.22 μg L −1 for Cr (III), 0.33 μg L −1 for Cu (II), and 1.25 μg L −1 for Pb (II). Quantitative analyses of these ions in infusions of black tea from various brands yielded recoveries ranging from 83.3% to 114.5%. This method is effective as a direct and highly sensitive technique for precisely quantifying trace concentrations of heavy metals in tea infusions.

Complex 1 crystallized in a monoclinic system with space group P21/n; 2 crystallized in a monoclinic system with space group C2/c; 3 crystallized in an orthorhombic system with space group Pna21; 5 crystallized in a monoclinic system with space group P21/c; 4 and 6 crystallized in triclinic systems with space group P-1. The DNA-binding modes of the complexes were investigated by several analysis methods (e.g. viscosity analysis, circular dichroism spectroscopy, fluorescent spectroscopic analysis, as well as UV spectroscopic analysis). A highly efficient and practical Pd(II)/Cu(OAc)2-catalyst system of Saegusa oxidation, which converts enol ethers to the corresponding enals with a number of diverse substrates at extremely low catalyst loadings (500 mol ppm) under ligand-free and aqueous conditions, is described. Its synthetic utility was demonstrated by large-scale applications of the catalyst system to important nature molecules. This work allows Saegusa oxidation to become a highly practical approach to preparing enals and also suggests new insight into the Pd(II)/Cu(II)-catalyst system for dehydrogenation of carbonyl compounds and decreasing Pd-catalyst loadings.

A novel Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) composite membrane involving ZIF-8 nanoparticles , named as ZIF-8/PAN membrane, was obtained via electrospinning to remove the Congo red (CR), Pb(II) and Cu(II) ions in industrial wastewaters , during which the adsorption mechanisms were examined in this study. The adsorption efficiency of the electrospun ZIF-8/PAN membrane was as high as 89%, 92% and 76% for CR, Pb(II) and Cu(II), respectively. Comparative analysis showed that ZIF-8 nanoparticles embedded in the ZIF-8/PAN membrane accounted for these enhanced adsorption capabilities. The adsorption behaviors of the ZIF-8 nanoparticles were investigated through experiments and theoretical analysis, and the results unraveled that the adsorption for CR by the ZIF-8 was mainly including electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding and π − π interaction, while those for Pb(II) and Cu(II) were mainly caused by ion-exchange and chemical adsorption. Parametric studies were conducted to optimize the conditions for removing CR, Pb(II), and Cu(II) by ZIF-8 nanoparticles, during which all of pollutants showed different reactions to the solution pH. This work not only develops a novel ZIF-8/PAN composite membrane for effective removals of pollutants, but also reveals the underlying mechanisms of pollutants adsorption in terms of molecular interactions, providing important understandings on fibrous materials design for efficient heavy metals and dyes removals in industrial wastewater treatment .
