A dual-functional curcumin strategy for light scattering mitigation in high-fidelity DLP ceramic 3D printing

Mingyue Cao,Wenxin Wang,Xingyu Yang,Wei Zhu,Xiaolong Zhu,Yinfeng He,Feng Chen,Xiaoxiao Han

Light scattering remains a critical barrier in digital light processing (DLP)-based ceramic additive manufacturing, particularly for achieving high precision, fine resolution, and complex geometries. In this study, we present a novel light scattering mitigation strategy by incorporating a multifunctional reactive additive that combines physical light absorption near 405 nm and chemical free radical scavenging. Curcumin effectively suppresses undesired photopolymerization in non-target regions by neutralizing scattered-light-generated radicals, enabling the fabrication of intricate structures with dimensional fidelity approaching the optical resolution limit (∼2.6 pixels). The strategy operates effectively at low concentrations (0.01 wt%) without requiring process parameter tuning, offering a broad process window and high reproducibility. Furthermore, the strategy is generalizable across diverse ceramic systems, including light-colored ceramics (Al2O3, ZrO2, and SiO2), and dark-colored ceramics (SiC) that are particularly susceptible to scattering. The geometric error of printed SiC components remains below 10% even at high exposure doses of 80 and 100 mJ·cm−2, effectively addressing the long-standing trade-off between curing depth and lateral resolution. This work provides a simple, scalable, and versatile approach for improving resolution in DLP ceramic printing, advancing the reliable production of fine-scale (<50 μm) ceramic architectures for applications in biomedicine, microelectronics, and precision engineering.

An active and multifunctional curcumin-zein composite film for shelf-life extension in sustainable food packaging

Zhihua Liu,Lingying Chen,Xiaozhi Zheng,Junlin Li,Jiankun Ding,Chen Cai,Xiaofang Chen,Haiming Yu,Qunlong Pan

Conventional plastic packaging faces significant challenges due to its non-biodegradable nature and lack of active preservation functionality, leading to environmental pollution and food waste. To address these issues, this study developed a curcumin-zein composite film as a multifunctional active packaging material based on natural polymers. Systematic characterization confirmed that curcumin was incorporated into the zein matrix through intermolecular interactions. Functional evaluations demonstrated that the composite film exhibits excellent UV-shielding performance, remarkable antioxidant and antibacterial activities, as well as favorable biodegradability and biosafety. In preservation tests on cherry tomatoes and black grapes, the 5% Cur-Zein composite film effectively delayed fruit quality deterioration, reducing weight loss, color changes, and nutrient consumption. This study demonstrates that the Cur-Zein composite film represents a green and high-performance active packaging material with good potential for reducing food loss and extending the shelf life of fruits.

Value-added utilization of nanocellulose from biomass: Curcumin-functionalized pH-responsive hydrogels for wound dressing applications

Lifang Wang,Xuepeng Zhang,Weidong Yu,Shan Yi,Hong Qiu,Li Chen,Yika Tang,Wenjing Li,Lifang Liu

A bio-based nanocellulose hydrogel is engineered via dual dynamic crosslinking of DACNF, CMCS, and PVA. • pH-responsive curcumin release is regulated by imine bond cleavage and ionization-induced swelling. • Synergistic interactions of CMCS, TA, and curcumin achieve > 99% antibacterial activity and enhanced antioxidant capacity. • The hydrogel accelerates wound healing in vivo by reducing inflammation and promoting collagen deposition. Researchers are increasingly interested in valorizing cellulose from industrial crops to create multifunctional materials for sustainable and value-added applications. In this study, a bio-based pH-responsive nanocellulose hydrogel was fabricated using dialdehyde cellulose nanofibers (DACNF) as the structural backbone, along with carboxymethyl chitosan and two representative polyphenols (tannic acid and curcumin) derived from industrial crops. The formation involved synergistic physical interactions and dynamic covalent crosslinking. The resulting hydrogel exhibited a robust three-dimensional network, high water absorption capacity, and reversible bonding characteristics, enabling pH-regulated release of curcumin. At pH 5.5, protonation of the Schiff base linkages decreases their stability, resulting in partial network relaxation and the initial release of curcumin. As the process progresses, gradual cleavage of imine bonds, together with the persistence of borate ester crosslinking, leads to a sustained and delayed release behavior. In contrast, a higher cumulative curcumin release was observed under weakly alkaline conditions (pH 7.4). The hydrogel showed excellent antibacterial activity (>99% inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli) and strong antioxidant capacity (89.57%). A feasibility assessment in vivo evaluation demonstrated enhanced wound healing, characterized by reduced inflammation and improved collagen deposition. This work highlights an effective strategy for transforming cellulose-based industrial crops into functional bioactive hydrogels with promising application potential. Folate-Targeted Co-Delivery of Curcumin and siRela Nanoparticles Synergistically Treat Sepsis-Associated Acute Kidney Injury

Xu Xiangyi,Tao Jingjin,Shen Zhongjun,Zhang Qian,Wang He,Nie Yuying,Guo Huike,Liu Qi,Li Zhongxin,Wang Chong,Liu Donglin,Pei Jiachen,Ma Chengqian,Yang Shuo,Cui Liyan

The increasing burden of Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) significantly impacts human health. Approximately 70% of septic patients develop AKI, which markedly increases the risk of in-hospital mortality. However, current treatment for Sepsis-Associated Acute Kidney Injury (SA-AKI) is mainly supportive, and no specific therapy is available. siRNA therapy is an emerging approach that inhibits mRNA of specific targets to exert therapeutic effects. Based on the gene silencing principle of siRNA, we developed a targeted bifunctional coloaded nanoparticle, PDA@Cur–PEI-PEG-FA/siRela (PCPPFS), using folic acid (FA) as a targeting moiety. In this system, curcumin acts as a therapeutic agent and synergizes with siRela to exert anti-inflammatory and antioxidative stress effects, thereby reducing apoptosis and pyroptosis of renal tubular epithelial cells. This nanosystem demonstrated good targeting and therapeutic effects in both in vitro and in vivo experiments, providing a new approach for SA-AKI therapy.

Pickering emulsion stabilized by egg derived reconstituted lipid nanoparticles for encapsulation and oral delivery of curcumin

Dan Han,Lihua Ji,Mingzhou Lu,Dingran Li,Xiangling Sheng,Jiaxing Zhang,Cheng Wang

The demand for high-quality, nutritious, and sustainable food products has led to a significant interest in the development of durable and effective emulsions. Pickering emulsions are promising candidates but the currently adopted stabilizers still have limitations. Here in this study, we introduce a novel egg derived reconstituted lipid nanoparticles ( E -rLNPs) as stabilizer for Pickering emulsions. The lipids extraction from de-oiled egg yolk powder was firstly optimized using response surface methodology by Box–Behnken Design and then prepared into E -rLNPs by a straightforward solvent-diffusion method. The E -rLNPs were found to form stable Pickering emulsions that can resist to various environmental stresses. Moreover, the optimal Pickering emulsion offers excellent protection and significantly improves the oral availability of curcumin. This research presents a promising approach for the development of functional foods and nutraceuticals, showcasing the potential of natural food-derived rLNPs as stabilizers for Pickering emulsions, thereby advancing delivery technologies in the food science.

Fully physically reinforced hydrogels: a periodic curcumin delivery system with convenient injection and thermo-reversible adhesion

Zhang Jingyan,Wang Zhengkai,Yue Yuxing,Ning Yishuo,Xu Pengyuan,Fan Weixiang,Xuan Han,Zhou Haiou,Sun Mei,Wang Xianbiao,Wang Ping,Yang Mingdi

Hydrogels with fully physical networks process significant advantages as convenient injection, self-healing, and biodegradable properties probably accompanied with unfavorable mechanics, adhesiveness, and drug-loading characteristics. In this study, N -acryloyl glycinamide (NAGA)–grafted gelatin decorated with photosensitive N′ -(2-nitrobenzyl) ( NB ) moiety, denoted as GN, was synthesized via a convenient one-step Michael addition. The GN hydrogels in terms of gelatin physical reinforcement was conveniently constructed via UV-induced NB group separation and dual -amide discharge. Also released are curcumin drugs loaded into hydrophobic NB groups via hydrophobic association. Contrastive analysis on a series of GN hydrogels with different degrees of substitution (DS) was performed. As a result, the GN-5 hydrogel with moderate DS (~ 41.2 ± 1.3%) possessed the overall optimal performance with the highest final storage modulus, maximal compression stress, most dense pore structure, and minimal swelling deformation. In addition, the fully physical networks thoroughly assisted in degradation, fast self-healing, and thermo-reversible adhesiveness. Most importantly, the further curcumin release achieved via heating induced H-bonding destruction, and the Ritger-Peppas model best described the dynamic drug release traces during the four kinetic models, which show great application potential in the field of biomedical materials. Graphical The fully physically reinforced gelatin hydrogels afford as a periodic curcumin delivery system with convenient injection, fast self-healing, thoroughly degradation, and thermo-reversible adhesion.

Fe-curcumin Nanozymes-Mediated Reactive Oxygen Species Scavenging and Anti-apoptotic Effects on Age-Related Cataracts

Xiang Gao,Kewei Li,Yan Huang,Ziyan Long,Yongguo Xiang,Wendi Zheng,Hong Cheng,Huijie Cao,Wenjuan Wan,Shijie Zheng,Xianwen Wang,Ke Hu

Age-related cataracts (ARCs) are major causes of vision impairment globally, primarily resulting from oxidative stress–induced senescence and apoptosis in lens epithelial cells (LECs). In this study, a sodium selenite-induced oxidative stress cataract model in neonatal rats was used to mimic ARC pathology. We investigated the therapeutic potential of Fe-curcumin nanozymes in delaying ARC progression by targeting cellular senescence and oxidative injury. In vitro experiments revealed that Fe-curcumin nanozymes significantly reduced reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels in H 2 O 2 -treated LECs, alleviated cellular senescence, and decreased apoptosis. The levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) were also markedly increased. Notably, the nanozymes downregulated senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) factors, including IL-6, IL-1β, CXCL1, and TGF-β, indicating suppression of the proinflammatory senescent microenvironment. In vivo , Fe-curcumin nanozyme treatment effectively delayed cataract development in rats. Mechanistically, the nanozymes inhibited both senescence and apoptosis by modulating the p53/p21/BAX signaling axis, primarily through reducing p53 expression and phosphorylation levels. These findings suggest that Fe-curcumin nanozymes represent a promising therapeutic strategy for ARCs by suppressing oxidative damage, cellular senescence, and inflammation through targeting p53-related pathways.

Casein-pectin nanocomplexes as a potential oral delivery system for improving stability and bioactivity of curcumin

Hua Chenghuan,Yu Wenjie,Yang Mingyue,Cai Qun,Gao Tian,Zhang Silong,Xu Huan,He Huan,Peng Na,Liu Yi

New nanocomplexes containing curcumin-loaded casein micelles and surface-coated pectin via electrostatic interaction were fabricated. Curcumin-loaded nanocomplexes prepared at pH 4 showed the most excellent performance than that at pH 3 and pH 2, which had an average size of 266.4 nm (polydispersity index = 0.193) and loading capacity of 93%. The morphology of nanocomplexes exhibited as monodisperse spherical nanoparticles observed by SEM and TEM. The experiment of anti-oxidant activity demonstrated that nanocomplexes tremendously kept the bioactivity of curcumin. Moreover, in vitro release behaviors of curcumin from casein-pectin nanocomplexes indicated that the surface coating layer of pectin obviously delayed the release of curcumin in simulated gastric fluid, and the controlled release ability in simulated intestinal fluid was greatly enhanced. The casein-pectin nanocomplexes exhibited as a promising oral delivery vehicle of bioactive ingredients in food and pharmacy. Graphical abstract

Boundary Between Amorphously and Molecularly Dispersed Curcumin of Its Amorphous Solid Dispersions Determined by Fluorescence Spectroscopy

Shixin Fan,Wenling Zheng,Shizhao Ren,Wangchuan Xiao,Fenghua Chen,Rongrong Xue

Amorphous solid dispersion (ASD) technology is popularly used for enhancing the solubility of poorly water-soluble drugs. Drug molecules in ASDs can be dispersed in the form of either amorphous (AASD) or molecular (MASD) forms. The boundary between AASDs and MASDs (A–M boundary) is defined as the drug concentration at which the existence of MASDs obviously influences the physicochemical properties of ASDs. In this work, fluorescence spectroscopy based on the aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) phenomenon was used to determine the A–M boundary of curcumin (CUR) ASDs prepared via neat ball milling. The relationship between the fluorescence intensity and the loading of CUR in the sample is consistent with the Stern–Volmer equation. For the CUR ASDs with PVP, the samples with CUR loading below 10% show significantly increased fluorescence and have a higher solubility (~178 μg·mL−1), suggesting the A–M boundary is around 10%. Similar A–M boundaries around 10% were also observed for CUR ASDs with PVPVA, Soluplus, HPMC, and HPMCAS. It is of great significance to define the A–M boundary of ASDs for guiding pharmaceutical ASD formulas by balancing drug loading, stability, and solubility.

Preparation of Multifunctional Hydrogel with Curcumin-Controlled Release and Photothermal Synergistic Antibacterial Property for Wound Dressing

Yufei Ling,Yuxuan Wang,Yuanpeng Cai,Shizhen Zhao,Hui Liu

Considering the dynamic changes in the wound microenvironment and the risk of bacterial infection during healing, the synergistic design of antibacterial hydrogel dressings has become an effective treatment strategy. A multifunctional hydrogel Cur-F127/CMCs/PDA was prepared through the cross-linking of carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCs) with genipin (GP), followed by the loading of curcumin-F127 (Cur-F127) micelles and polydopamine (PDA) nanoparticles. Successful synthesis of the hydrogel was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Results showed that the introduction of PDA endowed the hydrogel with excellent photothermal capability, achieving a temperature increase to 54.3 °C within 10 min under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation. Meanwhile, rapid Cur release was observed under NIR irradiation, exhibiting distinct “on/off” switching characteristics. The drug-controlled releasing behavior of the hydrogel was evaluated in physiological environments, and relatively high cumulative Cur release was obtained under simulated wound microenvironmental conditions (acid region and high temperature) due to the shrinking of polymer chains and micelle structure. The synergistic effect of Cur release and PDA photothermal therapy enabled the hydrogel to exhibit excellent antibacterial effects, and the survival rates of E. coli and S. aureus were reduced to 6.25% and 1.31%, respectively. Furthermore, in vitro biological studies demonstrated that the hydrogel possessed a good antioxidant property, hemostatic performance, blood compatibility, cell compatibility, and cell migration ability. In summary, the multifunctional wound dressing Cur-F127/CMCs/PDA provided a synergistic antibacterial strategy combining natural active compound release with photothermal effects, which accelerated the wound-healing process and holds significant clinical translational potential.

Zeyu Shou,Dong Yang,Yewen Liu,Jiawei Yu,Jiali Shou,Ming Cai,Lianxin Li,Shuohui Yuan,Xiufeng Wang

To address the clinical challenges of bacterial infection, inflammation, oxidative stress, ischemia-hypoxia, and excessive bone resorption during infected bone therapy, a multifunctional nanoparticle (Cur/Sr@CAMEL0 NPs) is engineered by integrating a self-assembled curcumin-strontium metal-phenolic network core (Cur/Sr NPs) with a hexameric lysine-conjugated antimicrobial peptide (K6-CAMEL0) via surface modification. The resultant nanoparticle exhibits distinctive morphological and structural characteristics, along with favorable cellular compatibility. Functionally, it is demonstrated to exhibit broad-spectrum antibacterial activity, along with inflammation and reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging capabilities, pro-angiogenic effects, and significant promotion of necrotic bone resorption and normal bone regeneration. In an infected bone defect animal model, the composite nanoparticle effectively eradicated Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) colonization and facilitated the bone regeneration process through single-dose administration. These findings collectively highlight the therapeutic potential of Cur/Sr@CAMEL0 as a multifunctional platform for managing bone infections, offering a promising strategy to address complex challenges in infected bone diseases.

Intelligent κ-carrageenan-Based packaging films enhanced with curcumin–anthocyanin–EGCG nanoparticles: Fabrication, characterization, and application

Mingrui Zhou,Mengqi Chen,Youwei Ai,Wenfu Hou,Yang Yi,Hongxun Wang,Yahong Han

Petroleum-based packaging materials raise serious environmental and food safety concerns, driving the development of sustainable smart packaging derived from natural polymers. In this study, natural pigment-zein-chondroitin sulfate-epigallocatechin gallate-ι-carrageenan (NZCEC) nanoparticles were fabricated and incorporated into κ-carrageenan-based films to enhance their functional properties. The effects of NZCEC addition on the films' physicochemical stability, intermolecular interactions, antioxidant activity, and responsiveness to ammonia and acetic acid vapors were systematically evaluated, along with their application in preserving mandarin fish ( Siniperca chuatsi ). Scanning electron microscopy revealed good compatibility between κ-carrageenan and moderately loaded NZCEC nanoparticles. Incorporation of NZCEC significantly improved the film's optical properties (opacity increased from 4.10 to 23.32 A mm −1 ) and reduced its water vapor permeability (from 8.23 × 10 −9 to 6.93 × 10 −9  g m −1 s −1 Pa −1 ). Moreover, the antioxidant activity was markedly enhanced (from 1.75 % to 77.65 %), along with notable responsiveness to ammonia and acetic acid. Storage trials with mandarin fish demonstrated that the smart film effectively delayed fish spoilage. Additionally, the film displayed distinct chromatic variations in response to freshness, allowing continuous assessment of food quality. These results establish NZCEC nanoparticle-reinforced κ-carrageenan films as a promising intelligent packaging material with improved stability, responsiveness, and food preservation performance.
