Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that is becoming increasingly prevalent worldwide. It has a complex, multifactorial pathogenesis and limited therapeutic efficacy. Emerging evidence indicates that Phyllanthus emblica polyphenols (PEP) exert protective effects against UC. However, its precise molecular mechanisms have yet to be fully elucidated. In this study, 71 polyphenolic compounds were identified from PEP using UPLC-Q-Exactive Orbitrap/MS, including 8 flavonoids, 27 phenolic acids, and 2 lignans. The symptoms of UC in mice were significantly reduced by PEP when induced with dextran sulfate sodium (DSS). Histological and biochemical analyses revealed that PEP ameliorated mucosal damage, restored goblet cell numbers, and enhanced the expression of tight junction (TJ) proteins, indicating improved intestinal barrier integrity. This restoration of barrier function was associated with the attenuation of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, evidenced by the downregulation of the ATF4/eIF2α/CHOP signaling pathway, and a concurrent reduction in intestinal epithelial cell apoptosis involving the modulation of the Bax/Bcl-2 balance and Caspase 3 expression. In parallel, gut microbiota analysis showed that PEP restored microbial community structure, increasing the relative abundance in a higher Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio. Furthermore, PEP enhanced short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production, particularly acetic, propionic, isobutyric, and isovaleric acids, which were positively correlated with beneficial bacterial taxa. Collectively, these findings demonstrate that PEP exerts therapeutic effects against UC by modulating the interplay between intestinal barrier integrity, ER stress, the apoptotic pathway, and the gut microbiota-SCFA metabolism axis.

The development of upconversion (UC) luminescent materials with negative thermal expansion (NTE) is of great importance to achieve high-performance temperature sensing. However, simultaneously enhancing UC luminescence and moisture resistance to overcome performance limitations remains a major challenge. In this work, an aliovalent cation substitution strategy is designed in which (NaMg)3+, (KMg)3+, and (RbMg)3+ are used to replace the Sc3+ in Sc2Mo3O12: Yb, Er phosphor, leading to significant structure transformation and remarkable enhancement in luminescence and moisture resistance. Among them, NaMgScMo3O12: Yb, Er exhibited a 29-fold enhancement in emission intensity and an increase in the water contact angle from 22.15° to 29.25°. Due to the efficient energy transfer induced by NTE effect, the emission intensity of NaMgScMo3O12: Yb, Er is 17 times higher than that of Sc2Mo3O12:Yb, Er at 548 K. The temperature sensing capability of NaMgScMo3O12: Yb, Er is investigated using the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) technique, revealing a maximum relative sensitivity (SR) of 1.17% K–1 (323 K). Furthermore, a superhydrophobic flexible film (water contact angle of 134.68°) temperature sensor is fabricated for monitoring ceramic heating element, achieving a low temperature uncertainty of 0.23–1.12 K. This work provides an approach for temperature sensing with NTE luminescent materials.

In this work, novel ternary composite ZIF-67/Ag NPs/NaYF 4 :Yb,Er is synthesized by solvothermal method. The photocatalytic activity of the composite is evaluated by sulfadiazine (SDZ) degradation under simulated sunlight. High elimination efficiency of the composite is 95.4% in 180 min with good reusability and stability. The active species (h + , ·O 2 − and ·OH) are identified. The attack sites and degradation process of SDZ are deeply investigated based on theoretical calculation and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis. The upconversion mechanism study shows that favorable photocatalytic effectiveness is attributed to the full utilization of sunlight through the energy transfer upconversion process and fluorescence resonance energy transfer. Additionally, the composite is endowed with outstanding light-absorbing qualities and effective photogenerated electron–hole pair separation thanks to the localized surface plasmon resonance effect of Ag nanoparticles. This work can motivate further design of novel photocatalysts with upconversion luminescence performance, which are applied to the removal of sulphonamide antibiotics in the environment.

In this study, we designed a dual functional nanosensor for detecting Cr (Ⅲ) and sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) mechanism between amine functionalized upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), where UCNPs serve as energy donor and aggregated AuNPs as energy acceptor. UCNPs have red emission at 654 nm under 980 nm laser excitation and monodispersed AuNPs show strong absorbance around 520 nm. Monodispersed AuNPs form aggregate easily in the presence of Cr (Ⅲ), which leads to the red-shift of the absorption of AuNPs and quenches the red emission of UCNPs. In the presence of STPP, the formation of Cr (Ⅲ)-STPP complex weakens the aggregation extent of AuNPs and the red emission of UCNPs increases. Therefore, the content of Cr (Ⅲ) and STPP could be detected in wide range according to the linear variety of fluorescence intensities of UCNPs at 654 nm with the detection limits of 0.44 μM and 0.54 μM for detecting Cr (Ⅲ) and STPP, respectively. In addition, due to the high selectivity and accuracy for the detection of STPP, this nanosensor can be utilized to determine STPP in green tea drink and drinking water.

The majority of the fabrication procedures of lanthanide-doped materials involve thermal treatment that often results in crystallite regrowth, stabilizing the specific crystal structure and resulting in luminescence enhancement. The efficiency and intensity of up-conversion luminescence are closely related to the structure and synthesis process of the materials. Herein, well-crystallized and pure tetragonal NaY(MoO4)2 microcrystals with a uniform octahedral shape have been successfully synthesized via an environmentally friendly hydrothermal method, followed by annealing treatment. The phases, structures, morphologies, and compositions of the synthesized products annealed at 500–1000 °C remain unchanged, indicating high thermal stability. Furthermore, the NaY(MoO4)2:Yb3+/Er3+ microcrystals exhibit strong green emission when irradiated using infrared (980 nm) or ultraviolet (378 nm) wavelengths. Upon 980 nm excitation, up to 37-fold luminescence enhancement is achieved when the samples are annealed at about 700 °C. Interestingly, the high colour purity of the strong green emission is not only independent of the dopant concentration and heat treatment temperature, but it is also independent of the excitation conditions, including power and wavelength, and this makes it particularly suitable as a green safety signal light and luminescent security ink in paintings. As-prepared safety inks with NaY(MoO4)2:Yb3+/Er3+ microcrystals were used for visual fingerprint recognition printed on A4 paper with three-level fingerprint security features, significantly increasing the difficulty of illegal imitation and enhancing the levels of anti-counterfeiting.

Due to the potential threatening of antibiotics in aqueous environment, a novel electro-oxidation (EO) — electro-Fenton (EF) —persulfate (PS) system with the addition of peroxydisulfate and Fe 2+ was installed for the degradation of cefotaxime. Ti/CNT/SnO 2 –Sb–Er with an ultra-high oxygen evolution potential (2.15 V) and enhanced electrocatalytic surface area was adopted as anode. The OH production and electrode stability test demonstrated great improvement in the electrochemical performances. Ni@NCNT cathode was tested with higher H 2 O 2 generation by the presence of nitrogen functionalities due to the acceleration of electron transfer of O 2 reduction. Experiment results indicated CNT and ErO 2 modification increased the molecular and TOC removal of cefotaxime. Coupling processes of EO-EF and EO-PS both resulted in shorter electrolysis time for complete cefotaxime removal, however, the mineralization ability of EO-PS process was lower than EO-EF, which might result from the immediate vanishing of PS. Thus, a further improved treatment EO-EF-PS system achieved an 81.6% TOC removal towards 50 mg L −1 cefotaxime after 4 h electrolysis, under the optimal working condition Fe 2+ = PS = 1 mM. The influence of current density and initial concentration on the performance of all processes was assessed. Methanol and tert-butanol were added in the system as OH and SO 4 − scavengers, which illustrating the mechanism of EO-EF-PS oxidizing process was the result of the two free radicals. Major intermediates were deduced and the degradation pathway of cefotaxime was analyzed. This research provides a potential coupling process with high antibiotic removal efficiency and effective materials for practical uses.

The MFeO 3 : R 3+ (M = La, Gd; R = Eu, Er, Ho) nanocrystalline powders were successfully synthesized by the sol–gel combustion method using glycine-based gel at a low ignition temperature. The as-burnt products present honeycomb-like structure with many irregular continuous pores due to the releasing of a large amount of gas during the combustion reaction process. The lattice parameters and cell volumes of MFeO 3 :R 3+ (M = La, Gd; R = Eu, Er, Ho) nanocrystalline powders are compared in detail. The magnetic properties of all the samples were studied systematically. The results show that the doping of rare-earth ions enhanced greatly the coercivity of GdFeO 3 and LaFeO 3 as a result of the enhancement of magnetic anisotropy . The influence of doped rare-earth ions on the magnetic properties was summarized. The distinction of magnetism of MFeO 3 :R 3+ (M = La, Gd; R = Eu, Er, Ho) were explained in detail by the intrinsic magnetism of doped rare-earth ions. This work is significant for the application of rare-earth elements in other magnetic materials.

Background and purpose Xin-Ji-Er-Kang (XJEK) is traditional Chinese formula presented excellent protective effects on several heart diseases, but the potential components and targets are still unclear. The aim of this study is to elucidate the effective components of XJEK and reveal its potential mechanism of cardioprotective effect in myocardial ischemia-reperfusion (MIR) injury. Experimental approach Firstly, the key compounds in XJEK, plasma and heart tissue were analyzed by high resolution mass spectrometry. Bioinformatics studies were also involved to disclose the potential targets and the binding sites for the key compounds. Secondly, to study the protective effect of XJEK on MIR injury and related mechanism, mice subjected to MIR surgery and gavage administered with XJEK for 6 weeks. Cardiac function parameters and apoptosis level of cardiac tissue were assessed. The potential mechanism was further verified by knock down of target protein in vitro. Results Pharmacokinetics studies showed that Sophora flavescens alkaloids, primarily composed with matrine, are the key component of XJEK. And, through bioinformatic analysis, we speculated JAK2 could be the potential target for XJEK, and could form stable hydrogen bonds with matrine. Administration of XJEK and matrine significantly improved heart function and reduced apoptosis of cardiomyocytes by increasing the phosphorylation of JAK2 and STAT3. The anti-apoptosis effect of XJEK and matrine was also observed on AC16 cells, and could be reversed by co-treatment with JAK2 inhibitor AG490 or knock-down of JAK2. Conclusion XJEK exerts cardioprotective effect on MIR injury, which may be associated with the activation of JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway.

Developing novel drugs for gastric cancer (GC) is greatly needed, and a reactive oxygen species (ROS)-modulating strategy has been demonstrated to be useful for cancer treatment. However, no organic arsenical-derived ROS-modulating drug has been developed in GC. Here, we constructed ACZ2 and investigated its efficacy and potential mechanism for GC in vitro and in vivo. Our data showed that ACZ2 could inhibit GC proliferation and cause G2/M phase arrest. Moreover, ACZ2 induced ROS accumulation by depleting glutathione (GSH) and TrxR1, triggering a subsequent ER stress response by activating the PERK/EIF2/ATF4/CHOP signalling pathways, which is a crucial step for ACZ2-mediated apoptosis and autophagy. Vitally, ROS scavenger (NAC) and ER stress inhibitor (4PBA) reversed ACZ2/ROS/ER stress-mediated apoptosis and autophagy. Our in vivo results clearly demonstrated that ACZ2 suppressed tumour growth in a GC xenograft model. Collectively, our data indicated that ACZ2 is a potential agent against GC.

Upconversion core–shell nanoparticles have attracted a large amount of attention due to their multifunctionality and specific applications. In this work, based on a NaGdF4 sub-10 nm ultrasmall nanocore, a series of core–shell upconversion nanoparticles with uniform size doped with Yb3+, Er3+ and NaDyF4 shells with different thicknesses were synthesized by a facile sequential growth process. NaDyF4 coated upconversion luminescent nanoparticles showed an obvious fluorescence quenching under excitation at 980 nm as a result of energy resonance transfer between Yb3+, Er3+ and Dy3+. NaGdF4:Yb,Er@NaDyF4 core–shell nanoparticles with ultrathin layer shells exhibited a better T1-weighted MR contrast.

The W18O49 nanoflowers with a diameter of 500 nm are prepared by a facile hydrothermal method. The Er–Yb: NaYF4 nanoparticles are adsorbed on the petals (the position of the strongest local electric field on W18O49 nanoflowers). With a 976 nm laser diode (LD) as an excitation source, the selectively green upconversion luminescence (UCL) is observed to be enhanced by two orders of magnitude in Er–Yb: NaYF4/W18O49 nanoflowers heterostructures. It suggests that the near infrared (NIR)-excited localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of W18O49 is primarily responsible for the enhanced UCL, which could be partly reabsorbed by the W18O49, thus leading to the selective enhancement of green UCL for the Er–Yb: NaYF4. The fluorescence intensity ratio is investigated as a function of temperature based on the intense green UCL, which indicates that Er–Yb: NaYF4/W18O49 nanoflower heterostructures have good potential for developing into temperature sensors.
