Highly crystallized micro/nano-sized Y2O2S and RE (Eu3+, Yb3+/Er3+) doped samples were prepared through a one-pot mild (200–250 °C) solvothermal method. By simply adjusting the amount of initial sulfur powder, the morphology and assembled nano-structures could be well controlled. With varying concentration of sulfur powder from 0.08 M to 0.8 M, the morphology and size of the target products varied from 20 nm nanosheets, 2 μm sheet-assembled plates/flowers to 1.5 μm nano-assembled spheres. The luminescence properties of Eu3+ doped Y2O2S with different morphologies were studied. The excitation peak above 300 nm ascribed to S2−–Eu3+ charge transfer showed a blue shift of 9 nm compared with the bulk sample. When co-doped with Yb3+/Er3+, the Y2O2S:Yb3+, Er3+ nano-aggregates exhibited a tunable emission under 980 nm laser excitation, shifting from greenish-yellow to orange-yellow, with increasing Yb3+/Er3+ ratio.

In order to expand the light response range of wide band-gap semiconductor photocatalyst (NaTaO 3 ) for effective photocatalytic conversion of Cr(VI), an up-conversion luminescence agent (Er 3+ :YAlO 3 ) is combined with NaTaO 3 and a visible-light driven photocatalyst, NaTaO 3 /Er 3+ :YAlO 3 , is prepared. Moreover, several conduction band co-catalysts (Ag, Au and Pt) are deposited the surface of NaTaO 3 /Er 3+ :YAlO 3 , respectively, to facilitate the transfer rate of photo-generated electrons. X-ray diffractometer (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses are employed to confirm the morphology, microstructure and composition of the prepared photocatalysts. In addition, UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectra are determined to explore the visible-light absorption properties of Er 3+ :YAlO 3 , NaTaO 3 , NaTaO 3 /Er 3+ :YAlO 3 and X/NaTaO 3 /Er 3+ :YAlO 3 (X = Ag, Au and Pt). Photoluminescence (PL) spectra are used to estimate the recombination rate of electron–hole pairs. The effects of irradiation time, photosource kind, solution acidity and used times on the photocatalytic capabilities of NaTaO 3 /Er 3+ :YAlO 3 and X/NaTaO 3 /Er 3+ :YAlO 3 (X = Ag, Au and Pt) are investigated in detail. The results show that the uses of up-conversion luminescence agent (Er 3+ :YAlO 3 ) and co-catalysts (Ag, Au and Pt) can promote NaTaO 3 to utilize visible-light to carry out the photocatalytic conversion of Cr(VI). Particularly, the prepared Au/NaTaO 3 /Er 3+ :YAlO 3 nanocomposite with 1.0 wt% Au and 0.3:1.0 molar ratio of Er 3+ :YAlO 3 and NaTaO 3 shows the highest photocatalytic activity in conversion of Cr(VI).

One-dimensional (1D) Y 2 Zr 2 O 7 :Er/Yb tube-in-tube nanostructures were prepared via a simple electrospinning technique with a single nozzle. The diameter of the outer tube of the Y 2 Zr 2 O 7 :Er/Yb tube-in-tube nanostructures is 190–170 nm, the thickness of the outer wall is 22–20 nm, the diameter of the inner tube is 120–100 nm, and the wall thickness of the inner tube is 17–14 nm. The optical properties of the Y 2 Zr 2 O 7 :Er/Yb tube-in-tube nanostructures, including the up-conversion and downshifting luminescence spectra, temperature sensitivity, and thermochromic properties, were studied in detail. Under 980 nm excitation, two weak green emissions at 528 nm and 550 nm, as well as a strong red emission at 650 nm of Er ions, are presented. When excited at 378 nm, the Er ions exhibit strong green emission at 545 nm, two weak red emission peaks at 650 and 680 nm, and near-infrared emission peaks at 1400–1600 nm. With increasing environmental temperature, the luminescence color of the 1D Y 2 Zr 2 O 7 :Er/Yb tube-in-tube nanostructures exhibited a transition from “orange→yellow→ green” when excited at 980 nm. For the 1D Y 2 Zr 2 O 7 :xEr/yYb tube-in-tube nanostructures (x = 0.01, 0.02, 0.03; y = 0.05, 0.10, 0.15), the maximum values of S r are 2.3 % K −1 under 980 nm excitation and 2.1%K −1 under 378 nm excitation within the temperature range of 303–723 K. This work develops integrated multifunctional optical materials and provides an alternative approach for the fabrication of nanoscale smart platforms, advanced displays, and applications in information security.

The rare-earth based double perovskites (DPs) can effectively solve the poor controllability of lanthanide ions (Ln 3+ ) doping concentrations in traditional double perovskites. In this study, we reshape the UV excitability of Er 3+ by constructing an energy transfer (ET) channel from STE to Er 3+ in the rare-earth based Cs 2 NaGdCl 6 DPs, achieving efficient green emission with the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 82.78 %. Excitingly, high-sensitivity temperature measurement within the temperature range of 303–430K is achieved based on the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR). The maximum relative sensitivities S R (I 526 nm /I 552 nm ) and S R (I 526 nm /I 460 nm ) of Cs 2 NaGd 0.965 Cl 6 : 0.005Sb 3+ , 0.03Er 3+ reach 1.11 % K −1 and 0.90 % K −1 , respectively, indicating that Cs 2 NaGd 0.965 Cl 6 : 0.005Sb 3+ , 0.03Er 3+ is promising optical temperature sensing material. Furthermore, a white light-emitting diode (WLED) device was fabricated using Cs 2 NaGd 0.965 Cl 6 : 0.005Sb 3+ , 0.03Er 3+ and commercial red phosphor CaAlSiN 3 : Eu 2+ with a 365 nm chip, which exhibited a color rendering index (CRI) of 95.1, a correlated color temperature (CCT) of 4989 K, and CIE coordinates of (0.3443, 0.3397). This work broadens the application of rare-earth based Cs 2 NaGdCl 6 DPs.

Glass-forming region guided design gives a stable Zn(PO 3 ) 2 -AlF 3 -NaF fluorophosphate host (ΔT ≈ 166 °C) for fiber drawing. • Fluorine as a network modifier creates a low-phonon environment, boosting 1.5 μm emission. • Broadband 1.5 μm emission in bulk (47.2 nm) and fiber (ASE 1450–1650 nm, 0.187 dB/cm). Driven by the rapid growth of AI, 5G/6G, and chip-scale LiDAR, broadband 1.5 μm gain media with high efficiency and fiber compatibility are urgently needed. However, the structure-spectroscopy correlation governing the luminescence performance of Er 3+ /Yb 3+ co-doped glasses remains insufficiently understood. In this work, a Zn(PO 3 ) 2 -AlF 3 -NaF fluorophosphate glass composition (ZAFPN15) was selected based on a previously reported glass-forming region and characterized from atomic structure to fiber-level performance. Molecular dynamics simulations indicate that fluorine predominantly acts as a network modifier and that Er 3+ ions are predominantly coordinated by fluorine (Er–F coordination number ≈ 7.73). The local phonon energy around Er 3+ ions is estimated to be below 500 cm⁻ 1 , much lower than the nominal maximum phonon energy (∼1260 cm⁻ 1 ). The optimized glass exhibits a measured emission cross-section of 0.54 × 10⁻ 20 cm 2 at 1535 nm with an effective linewidth of 47.2 nm, together with a low inversion threshold (∼0.2). Fiber fabrication from this glass shows amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) spanning 1450–1650 nm with a propagation loss of 0.187 dB/cm at 1535 nm. These results demonstrate that this specific fluorophosphate glass composition can be processed into an active fiber with broadband near-infrared emission, and the structural data offer a possible explanation for the observed emission properties.

In this work, the up-conversion phosphor NaYF 4 :Yb 3+ , Er 3+ nanocrystalline mixed with P 25 and TiO 2 hollow microspheres with high light scattering ability were fabricated as electrode for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Meanwhile, we take advantage of the low cost feature of the carbon counter electrode to replace the precious metal Platinum (Pt) of DSSCs. SEM results show that the well-dispersed TiO 2 hollow microspheres size is 1.5 μm with surface consisting of a large number of rice-like nanorods. The particle size of the as-prepared NaYF 4 :Yb 3+ , Er 3+ nanoparticles is about 80 nm. The Photocurrent-Voltage curve of P 25 /NaYF 4 :Yb 3+ , Er 3+ cell under 980 nm infrared light has an obvious infrared photoresponse. The fabricated DSSCs using NaYF 4 :Yb 3+ , Er 3+ achieves power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 5.27% under one sun illumination, which shows an increase of 16% when compared with the benchmark P 25 cell (4.55%). In addition, the optimized DSSC using TiO 2 hollow microspheres as the top scattering layers with NaYF 4 :Yb 3+ , Er 3+ /P 25 exhibits a prominent PCE of 6.23%, which shows a 37% increase in conversion efficiency when compared with the commercial P 25 cell (4.55%). The increase in conversion efficiency should be contributed to the dual effects of the enhanced light harvesting of up-conversion NaYF 4 :Yb 3+ , Er 3+ and light utilization of the top light scattering TiO 2 hollow microsphere.

The key to obtain effective photocatalysts is to increase the efficiency of light energy conversion, and thus the design and implementation of full-spectrum photocatalysts is a potential approach to solve this problem especially by extending the absorption range to near-infrared (NIR) light. Herein, the improved full-spectrum responsive CuWO 4 /BiOBr:Yb 3+ ,Er 3+ (CW/BYE) direct Z-scheme heterojunction was prepared. The CW/BYE with CW mass ratio of 5% had the best degradation performance, and the removal rate of tetracycline reached 93.9% in 60 min and 69.4% in 12 h under visible (Vis) and NIR light, respectively, which were 5.2 and 3.3 times of BYE. According to the outcome of experimental, the reasonable mechanism of improved photoactivity was put forward on the basis of (i) the up-conversion (UC) effect of Er 3+ ion to convert NIR photon to ultraviolet or visible light, which can be used by CW and BYE, (ii) the photothermal effect of CW to absorb the NIR light, increasing the local temperature of photocatalyst particle to accelerate the photoreaction, and (iii) the formed direct Z-scheme heterojunction between BYE and CW to boost the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Additionally, the excellent photostability of the photocatalyst was verified by cycle degradation experiments. This work opens up a promising technique for designing and synthesizing full-spectrum photocatalysts by utilizing synergetic effects of UC, photothermal effect and direct Z-scheme heterojunction.

In this study, the energy transfer (ET) mechanism among Yb3+/Er3+/Mn2+ has been revealed by download conversion (DC) and upconversion (UC) transients and steady-state fluorescence spectra. Moreover, the novel structure, inert-core/active-shell/inert-shell cubic NaYF4@NaYF4:Er3+/Yb3+/Mn2+@NaYF4, has been synthesized via a convenient hydrothermal method. With the excitation of a 980 nm laser diode, bright single-red upconversion (UC) fluorescence is observed, which shows the longest UC lifetime and highest efficiency compared with the other structures of NaYF4:Er3+/Yb3+/Mn2+, NaYF4:Er3+/Yb3+/Mn2+@NaYF4, and NaYF4@NaYF4:Er3+/Yb3+/Mn2+. The inert-core/active-shell/inert-shell nanocubes are homogeneous with an ultra-small (sub-20 nm) size, which is suitable for distribution and elimination in biological tissue. Our results indicate that the Mn2+ doping of δ-doped structures is an effective method to significantly improve UC single-red light, which shows great potential application in vivo bioimaging.

A new visible-light-sensitive photocatalyst, Er3+:Y3Al5O12/MoS2–NaTaO3–PdS, was prepared by hydrothermal, liquid boiling and deposition methods. The prepared photocatalysts were all characterized using an X-ray diffractometer (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The photocatalytic activity of the prepared photocatalysts was evaluated via photocatalytic degradation of amaranth as a refractory pollutant with simultaneous hydrogen evolution under visible-light irradiation. Moreover, the effects of the visible-light irradiation time and molar ratio of Er3+:Y3Al5O12 and NaTaO3 on the photocatalytic capability of Er3+:Y3Al5O12/MoS2–NaTaO3–PdS were studied. The results show that the use of Er3+:Y3Al5O12 can improve the utilization ratio of visible light (solar light) for NaTaO3. The optimum ratio of Er3+:Y3Al5O12 and NaTaO3 is 0.45 : 1.00. In addition, a study of extended reusability shows that the prepared photocatalyst can be effectively recycled for three repetitive cycles without an apparent deactivation of the photocatalytic activity. A visible-light photocatalytic degradation mechanism of amaranth with simultaneous hydrogen evolution is also proposed.

The (0.98- x )(0.6Pb(Mg 1/3 Nb 1/3 )O 3 -0.4PbTiO 3 )- x Pb(Yb 1/3 Nb 1/3 )O 3 -0.02Pb(Er 1/2 Nb 1/2 )O 3 ((0.98- x )(PMN-PT)- x PYN:Er 3+ ) ceramics were prepared through a solid-state reaction method. The phase structure, piezoelectric response, ferroelectric performance and upconversion emission of the ceramics were systematically investigated. The phase structure, the electrical and optical properties are strongly related to the content of PYN. The optimized piezoelectric response and upconversion emissions of the ceramics were achieved near x = 0.12, which locates in the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) composition. Furthermore, the temperature sensing behaviors of the resultant compounds based on the thermally coupled levels of 2 H 11/2 and 4 S 3/2 of Er 3+ ions in the temperature range of 133–573 K were studied by utilizing the fluorescence intensity ratio technique. Additionally, the thermal effect, which is induced by the laser pump power, of the studied ceramics is also investigated and the produced temperature is enhanced from 268 to 348 K with the pump power rising from 109 to 607 mW.

Yb3+/Er3+ codoped Gd2MoO6 upconversion nanocrystals were synthesized via the traditional citric-assisted sol–gel method. X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and upconversion emission spectroscopy were employed to characterize the final products. Under the irradiation of 980 nm light, the synthesized nanocrystals emitted visible green and red upconversion emissions arising from the intra-4f transitions of Er3+ ions. The upconversion emission intensities were found to be dependent on the dopant concentration and the emission colour gradually changed from green to yellow, and finally to red on elevating the Yb3+ doping concentration. The involved upconversion luminescence mechanism was systematically studied and the steady-state rate expressions were applied to analyze the influence of energy back transfer on the multicolour upconversion emissions. Moreover, the temperature dependent emission intensity ratio of the (2H11/2, 4S3/2) thermally coupled levels of the Er3+ ion in the range of 303–703 K was recorded to study the optical thermometric properties of the resultant nanocrystals. The maximum sensor sensitivity of the Yb3+/Er3+ codoped Gd2MoO6 nanocrystals was determined to be as high as 0.0053 K−1 at 350 K. In addition, the temperature sensing performance of the synthesized compounds was found to be greatly dependent on the Yb3+ doping concentration. These results reveal that the Yb3+/Er3+ codoped Gd2MoO6 nanocrystals with high sensor sensitivity and wide operation range are suitable for non-contact optical thermometry.

A series of ternary lanthanide β-diketonate derivatives covalently bonded to xerogels (named as Ln-DP-xerogel, Ln = Sm, Yb, Nd, Er, Pr, Ho) by doubly functionalized alkoxysilane (dbm-Si) was synthesized in situ via a sol-gel process. The properties of these xerogel materials were investigated by Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), diffuse reflectance (DR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analyses, and fluorescence spectroscopy. The data and analyses suggest that the lanthanide derivatives have been covalently grafted to the corresponding xerogels successfully. Of importance here is that, after excitation with visible light (400–410 nm), the xerogels all show characteristic visible (Sm3+) as well as near-infrared (NIR; Sm3+, Yb3+, Nd3+, Er3+, Pr3+, Ho3+) luminescence of the corresponding Ln3+ ions, which is attributed to the energy transfer from the ligands to the Ln3+ ions via an antenna effect. Exciting with visible light is advantageous over UV excitation. Furthermore, to the best of our knowledge, it is the first observation of NIR luminescence with visible light excitation from xerogels covalently bonded with the Sm3+, Pr3+, and Ho3+ derivatives. Compared to lanthanide complexes (Ln = Er, Nd, Yb) functionalized periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMO) materials that exhibit similar optical properties reported in our previous work, the Ln-DP-xerogel (Ln = Sm, Yb, Nd, Er, Pr, Ho) in this case offer advantages in terms of ease of synthesis and handling and potentially low cost for emerging technological applications. Development of near-infrared luminescence of the lanthanide materials with visible light excitation is of strong interest to emerging applications such as chemosensors, laser systems, and optical amplifiers.
